Wesco Oil Can Oiler Restoration

- A quick restoration this week as I have a few bigger projects on the go. This Wesco oiler was a pleasure to restore and came out great. This thing gets used very often so it's good to give it a new lease of life.

Process:
Firstly I disassemble the oiler and emptied any oil inside. I then degreased all of the parts to remove any dirt, grease, or oil. Once clean I stripped the paint using what is, in my opinion, the best paint stripper, 'Starchem Synstryp'. Then, I removed the rust with Jenolite Rust Remover and a wire wheel. Once all of the rust had been removed, I masked the parts that needed it and proceded to etch and prime the main pieces. Once dry I used U-Pol's Fantastic Filler to fill any small dents in the main can. I then sanded the high-build primer and filler in preparation for the basecoat. For the basecoat, I needed to mix yellow and red to get the desired shade of orange. Once the main parts were degreased and tac clothed, I applied three coats of base and three coats of lacquer. Once dry, I removed any masking tape and got started on the new gasket. I need to get a proper gasket punch set, but they are expensive. Soon. Once that was ready I placed it in and drilled out the hole for the pump trigger. It was then a matter of reassembling the oiler and giving it a test. The restoration was then complete.

Noice! 30w non-detergent oil is good for most antique machines that need oil, just fyi.
i use whatever oil i can get my hands hold off, old machines dont care what u use lol
I love ur channel tool rescue
U too RestoreIt
O Brasil ama vocês dois
Man, borrow him couple of barrels of your evaporust. It hurts to see, how he drips a few drops of rust remover from tiny canister and smears them on details :-D
Good Job !! 👍
i love your videos
100% perfect 👌
Nice video. But i personally wouldnt fill in the dents. Maybe knock out any bad ones but id leave the character of them
that is so cool that i will use it to give random people tequila shots
This is rapidly becoming one of my favourite channels.
Thank you, Sputnic. Glad to have you.
Plus he shows his restorations working.
I'm done with effects...drones....same old terrible video music...subliminal advertising....egomaniac youtubers! This is the way forward.
You should use it for extra virgin olive oil at dinner.
Haha 🤣 brilliant idea
😂😂
Now that I think about it seems like a fantastic idea since the bottles eventually get oily.
No, would've been fine if it was all metal + a thorough clean but oil would've seeped through the plastic components, if you put virgin olive oil inside it, the chemicals would leech into the olive oil, the tip material is brass which in industrial purposes is often mixed with lead to make machining it easier, you wouldn't want your food to be contaminated with lead right?
Totally agree with those that thank you for not playing back ground music.
I immediately close a video if they start using background music.
Your work is hypnotic. Thank you for not playing background music.
Agreed. Background music shits me.
dubstep intros make me mad...
I am addicted to this channel... cant wait till we get a full “restored bmw” video
Count me in, i'm really curious about the BMW.
+1
Owning two e30s makes me even more curious about the bmw 🤪😎
Restoring is the best option always
Amazing work mate you give treasures of time a new lease on life :3
Watching these videos feels like meditating
I absolutely love your videos man! Keep up the good work!
Liked before even watching because i just know at this point.
Also, how do you decide when to use a sand blaster and when to use the paint remover is it because of the type or metal?
Shop tour?
Can just use subtitles to explain what things are. Be sure to add lots of small noises for maximum ASMR haha
Your videos are so satisfying!! Great job!
it looks like how to basic. but doing correct things. XD
I want this channel to become the next Primitive Technology ^-^ its so good.
Check out Handtool Rescue
When your car dashboard lights up with this symbol, that is what you need.
Should look into powdercoating, for some of the things you restore it would be better than paint
this
Until it starts to turn loose
Usually stronger than paint and holds up longer
Doesn't bond as well with the metal. Water can wick underneath (or oil in this case) and it will loosen. I have heard that there are better formulas nowadays that are epoxy based and more durable, but we do not use it for anything in the aircraft business. Proper metal prep/etching, primer and top coats are the most dependable in my experience. Thanks for the reply.
I'm really just going off of things I have and have seen on vehicles, engine covers, suspension parts all kinds of things and it seems to hold up very well
Gotta give you major credit for having a big project going on in the background and still putting out other vids!
Orange is my new favourite color.
allis chalmers? :D
Like before watching club cuz I know its gonna be awesome!
Hooked on your channel since I found it. Great work!
as always a very satisfying video!!! by the way, what kind of material you used for the replacement gasket?
Looks nice!
I should be in bed but I would not have been able to sleep until I watched this!
Thank you! Superb work!
Nice job, but you've most likely decreased the antique collector's value.
Please don't change your video style. Keep it up. Love your videos.
Well done, once again :) Such a nice orange colour! Could you demonstrate the paint spraying process more in detail in your vids to come, please? I'd like to learn how to apply the paint, not too little, not too much.
Dude can you hammer dents back to normal instead of filling them in?
I have no idea why that was so compelling but it was, and I loved it.
Excellent work :)
Looks nice. Great vid. Looking forward to your next vid.
I have one of these oil cans but it had the see through re-inforced pipe spout. I dont know how old it was but i left it in our back garden for over 10 years and it has a lovely patina on it. I made it into a desk lamp, weighted the base and switch it on now and again. Mine was working perfectly until I dismantled it. :).
Thanks Ian!
Legend has it these videos are so hard to make because he falls asleep while editing
I watch them when I come home from work all stressed and sleep-deprived. It helps me unwind and relax so I can finally get some sleep.
You did a wonderful job. Perfect color for it too, and it works like you just bought it. Great job!
I’d like to see the restoration of an old camp stove (like a Coleman).
That's a nice restoration. I like the final color. It gives the oiler a nice touch. Keep up the good work. 👍
Absolutely awesome channel and I cannot fault your work! Especially when you're restoring car parts :) I may need to send some over in the future to be restored.
Nice vide restoration
Just restored mine. You can buy copies of the original stcikers for these, they look fantastic
Do you know in which material is the gasket ?
Would you like to restore my iPad 1st Feb?
Class :)
I don't know about this one. You just striped this thing of its history. Also your paint jobs are too shiny. This oiler was most likely mate orange.
good video I like this kind of video
And i Brazilian
I love your channel because there is no music. I love to here the sounds in fast speed. You are also very thorough & pay more attention to detail than any other resto channel I subscribe to! As far as things to resto, maybe some more old power tools & car related tools. I really enjoy the car part restos too! Keep up the amazing work. 👍🏼
Enjoyed this. I admire your knowledge, skill, and equipment around painting - most of us use either what'is in a shaker can! I'd say "persimmon?" The official oil can color for 2019!
I've got my dad's old smaller version of this oil can, it's orange too, you need to get the wesco water slide transfer on it unless you put one on after, ( not being a spotter or anything)
Great video, & like others say, why Chuck it away when you can repair it.
Also I have a Yamaha SR500 motorcycle painted in ford signal Orange. Nice colour.
See interesting video about vintage skateboard restoration project: ua-cam.com/video/Un7DhSHMp8Q/v-deo.html
Could you maybe make a video explaining stuff about spray-painting? I'm wanting to get into that topic and you seem like you know what you're doing. Great vid btw! really enjoying your content!
I almost freaked out when you used a spanner to tighten the plastic pump. More like if it breaks... hahahah. Glad it turned out ok,
انت متقن جيدا لعملك بصراحه انا استمتع بما تقوم به من عمل محترف وجميل. شكرا لك
4:05 - That etching primer looks just like the DuPont Variprime we used to use years ago. That stuck on metal like stink on a skunk - never had a failure. The nickname for the stuff was "yellow death", can't recall the reason.
I like the resto, it's well done. I do think that's an obnoxiously bright shade of orange, but maybe that's just me. :) Paint job itself was well executed.
OMG I have a smilar Oil can... I might make a video like yours!
3:31 I know it's nothing important or bothering but theres a typo in masking. Just wanted to point it out in case you missed it. Awesome video and I really like the oil can. Has that kind of rustic feeling :)
Nice, but, it sounded lite the pump lever needed a drop of oil! ;) Also I think the brass nozzle should have been polished, kind of made me itch when you left it untouched like that! =)
Nice! Personally, I would go with a rusty orange - red colour, but this orange mixed with a bit of yellow turned out to look great as well. Love your work!
Can i make a suggestion for the paint string? I seen a video of a guy who stripped the paint off a car but when it came to the hood he used plastic to cover over top of the stripper. Said it worked better because it could sit longer. I tried it with one of my kitchen cabinets and left it covered for about an hr. Came back and i didnt have a single spot i had to scrub off. But for metal id probably used a bursh just in case.
Because old is gold..
What call video type this . what tool make ?
This one must have been easy. It was well oiled to start with.
I have four of these Wesco oil cans. They are really good. I just handpainted mine different colours to show they are old but well loved. You can still buy new ones.
Problem is, now it looks brand new. Some items are better off having a bit of patina. Should have just fixed the gaskets and cleaned it up a bit.
Just imagine how fast this fella could fix old stuff with the infinity gauntlet. For example set playback speed 2x.
Thanks. I just bought one for my daughters' birthday to restore. Much more to it than I initially thought. Looks fun.
You do fantastic work, always a pleasure to watch. Thank you for sharing your videos.
im asking myself how an oil can get rusty :\
great work man, on your next work try to compound then polish and wax the paint job, i wonder how it will come out
Vintage bicycles, radio control models...those would be awesome to watch you restore! Just a suggestion, love these vids btw
Fantastic, really enjoy your video's.
Yourself and H.T.R. channels, top notch.
Very good job ! In which material is the new gasket ? I currently restore a similar oil can and the gasket is missing...
my eagle oiler seems to leak out of the top and around the threads is that normal for these old oilers? I'm currently using it for penetrating fluid made out of acetone and ATF tho. @Restore It
You are NOT a pro? You do excellent work for a non pro...LOVE your channel and I'm a chick.
Very pretty. Given the thinness of the metal, could one have used rust converter instead of a remover, or would it not have made any/much difference?
How would you go about removing aluminium oxide from the inside of an outboard and then painting it so it’s not able to rust again after and that can withstand high temperatures?
He even filled it with oil!. Absolute mad lad.
He's totally filling his e30 dif up with this. One pump at a time.
I wish I had the skill, knowledge, time, equipment, and space to restore things. I think it would be a lot of fun to do a nut and bolt restoration on an old car.
It's a miracle how many experts are watching your vids and putting in their worthless 2 cents....
good job
I still have my fathers. Works pretty good for something as old as it is. must be at least 50 to 60 years old! Maybe older.
This is a great hobby for sure. Very fun and a very satifing reward. AWESOME! :)
Great work as usual but is it just me that would rather have the "old" oil can? Some things are too functional to be restored in my opinion
Beautiful job. Looked like it had just come out of the packaging, but no doubt better quality. 😀
This was close to a super job. The ring on the outside can could have popped in color that was Sympothetic to all not just basic can.
God, your edits are poetry...thx for not making us watch a bunch of bullshit..
Great job! But Would it be only me that scratches, plaques and rust sometimes feel taste and history?
Now for the label reproduction.
progress-is-fine.blogspot.com/2015/11/wesco-oilcans-ae-westwood-ltd.html
So relaxing watching you work, but “Maksing” got me agitated all over again...
Love this video even thou you can a buy one brand new for a fiver from Halfords! Not the point I know.
Excellent...Brilliant...AWESOME!!! Thanks for sharing!!
YIKES !!! If these are now antique what about me ??? I still have two of them which I bought .
Great videos. Please always give a rough date of manufacture, so i don't have to google it. :)
Enjoyable vid, but why did you primer then fill then paint? you should fill then prime and paint
Excelent work but you mask the screw of the bottle a little too much and unpainted iron is seen when is screwed up.
another great restoration! keep them coming!
I love your content its so interesting. You have real knowlegde about restoration. So cool and inspirational.
That is some sexy orange color you put on there, beautiful restoration!
i think it looked great as it was to be honest... give it a wipe and change the seals... job done. thats a great looking, used oil can as it is :)
Simple one, but very good end result 👌
