Just about screamed aloud in terror when Terra Mystica came out for the newbies.
The "I brought a friend" surprise killed me. 😂 And all your plans are shattered. "Ohh no it's ok!" *puts away all the 4-5 player games I had set out*" Let me just see what we have that plays 6 players"
That struggle is real! Okay everyone I refreshed the rules, got a teach ready, and have it all set.... up..... uh hey, who's this 6th person . . .
Ahhh that sudden turn from fun competitive strategic games to simple no-brainer party games, sounds so familiar
LITERALLY
I always do 3-3 in that case, 1 group plays on coffee table
The dreaded 6 player count.
Oh man, I try to be flexible/accomodating, but If everyone says bring Gloomhaven, and I haul that bugger to game night, we are playing Gloomhaven.
I think there is a difference between "bring that game" and showing up with an unannounced game.
is it bad that I'd love to play with the bossy host ? lol
She does all the hard part of game night ^^
Control freaks can be useful sometimes.
I really appreciate how you manage to get it all in so accurately. Especially having game nights where I accidentally never make it to the table. 😬😅
haha I have often hosted game nights where I got to play very little because I was just trying to make sure others could play!
🙋♂️ Raise your hand if... one evening you brought a new release (you studied the rules hard!) and deep inside you felt betrayed because a friend suggested to play another game instead, but at the end of the evening you felt stupid because you realized you all had a lot of fun together and that what really matters 😉
Don't let F.O.M.O. ruin your evening, you'll play that game eventually...
Literally happened with me today wth xD
Oh god I laughed when the game brought out for 'new players' was Ghost Stories. :D
Game is legendarily difficult, on even the easiest difficulty.
And then Arboretum. And Terra Mystica 😁🙃
I played it once. We lost.
@@JoeyjojoShabadoo7I'd be really impressed if you played it once and *didn't* lose :D
@@JerzyMuller Terra Mystica showing up was my reaction of: 'Oh okay we're just trolling the new people here' hahaha
@@wesleyhollandjr111 Oh Terra Mystica is easy to learn the only thing that I seem to have a problem with it is being to win. But learning it was not so hard.
Fun must be highly regimented, lest anyone involved strays beyond the pre-established parameters of the aforementioned fun. If you don't keep control, things could degrade into an orgy or something, & there's no surer way to ruin cardboard.
so, so true
Yep, that was the last time we saw Fog of Love....
You'll never get the stains out
Not that I'd do it, but I'm definitely feeling the "put your cell phones in here" thing. So disruptive when someone constantly on it!
As for hosting, I might be guilty of suggesting games a bit beyond the entry level for new people. Maybe not for the first game, but the second one. Come on, Ticket to ride to Underwater Cities isn't /that/ big of a step ;)
Please never again pour red wine into a wine glass over your game table. 😊
This is Paula's Pulp Fiction for boardgames! (It even has the locked case.) "SAY KICKSTARTER AGAIN, I DARE YOU. I DOUBLE DARE YOU, MEEPLETHUMBER !"
Underated Comment
I'm sure most of the insider board game jokes went over my head, but I lost it at "you like trains, right?" Haha. Well done.
Pre pandemic I would have laughed at such awkward and difficult nights. Now I am pink shirt incarnate. Anyone who shows up must be accommodated oh God please give me socialization.
Host: "hi, welcome to game night!, oh you brought a bag of your own games? .."
The host in the red dress is how my game nights go. I try to channel a low budget Martha Stewart
Ok hooking people with Fantasy and then introducing Terra Mystica was a brilliant but devious move.
I felt that locking briefcase scene! I hosted once and actually told my guest if he didn't put his phone away he would never get invited back ever. He put his phone away and we had a great evening! Still not sure if he hates me now though.....
I used to be Jean Jacket when I first started, and then a bit of Purple Shirt (with Pandemic and Tragedy Looper), and now I think I'm becoming Red Dress. Our last few game nights have literally been dinner parties.
Paula is ALWAYS entertaining. I'd watch her do a review of Tic Tac Toe.
Oh my stars, the diegetic "don't forget to like and subscribe" is a great line
Laughed so hard when she went first with ghost stories and then to Arboretum with the new players well played.
Oh my gosh. Orange/peach dress Paula is 100% MY STYLE OF HOSTING GAME NIGHTS!!!
A) Was amused to notice that "influencer" Paula wore the same shirt as pre-show ad reader actual Paula.
B) I'm a non-dining version of red dress. I absolutely stand by the tenet that teaching without playing levels out the experience for a new crowd and demonstrates your dedication to *sharing* the game over *winning* the game. While I use teach sessions to explore new strategies, it's still too easy to blowout the game even by accident.
C) The year TM came out, I taught it three times one weekend at a con. Got the teach time down to juuuuust over 30m.
D) Why are endfix dashes doing -strikethrough- rather than italics? Who regularly needs access to strikethrough?
If you replace the wine with high-end craft beer...you just nailed my game night! Except for being late. You just lose turns if you're late. Oh, I'm sorry, is your hand of cows lacking?...SHOW UP ON TIME!!!
The infamous question: What would I tell my past self? I would show him this video to save me from the growing pains of being a host and all the potential gamers I scared away. And of course, buy Bitcoin.
"Raise your hand if it's your turn." - Best rule ever.
Thanks Paula! Your vids are the best. Laugh out loud, hilarious!
Absolutely brilliant, knocking it out the park
Every
Single
Time
Tag yourself! I'm the 'strict adherance to the predetermined games and schedule' Paula.
My group definitely has to fight against the "let's talk about what we could play so long that we don't have time to play it" issue. Fortunately we've learned to just narrow it down and then let random chance decide at that point.
Oh god, skipping a classic Knizia because we need to play a brand new Kickstarter hits way too close to home. Good stuff.
Brand new Knizia actually...
"Yeah, I have some board games, but I know you have something new in the trunk of your Civic because I bought it for you and we haven't played it yet."
Can I be friends with the Paula who brought out Level 7: Omega Protocol? She's the best just for bringing that game out for a game night. (Though I 100% relate more to Salmon Dress Paula. Though it's usually Jerk Chicken, beer, and other snackies)
I only play solo games. That way, I never have to go through the trouble of actually hosting a board game night. Or even seeing other people. :O
haha, and all the snacks and drinks are for you!
But that means you ALWAYS have to host the board game nights.
@@Gufnorkian - it actually makes closing the board game of the night MORE stressful
Oh is a shame to hear that.. But is a fun experience when you are the host, sometimes is challenging due to the people around the table 😊
@@varokwiss - on lucky non-working nights a board game meet-up means there is no literal host for the sessions I go to. The at home sessions are with myself debating over which game I should play vs want to play vs is it really worth all the setup... will I finish it this time... etc. It's a ME problem 😂
I found your channel only recently, but it's already one of my favorites/favourites (I am Dutch and keep getting confused about the proper spelling). There aren't many sketches on the web that you can keep watching time and again and which remain hilarious. But yours are!
Hash-tag I love Paula Deming haha!
I found showing "1 Tree" from Arboretum to the opponents funny because everyone keeps that as a peekaboo card :')
So, which one are you, Paula? Will the real Paula now stand, please.
ok I want the planner and food hoster both in my gaming nights
Paula you are so awesome!Trying to decide which Paula host, I want to play games with. Lol
We need to play this so I can review it tomorrow.... Too real 😂
I def WANT to act like host nbr 2, cmon we need to play all games and everybody needs to stay focused! but then if I did nobody would want to play games with me :P
Excellent editing of your excellent sketches.
2:04 - stop attacking me! 😭
I'm somewhere between pink and purple for casual anyone-can-drop-in game nights. I usually end up teaching and hosting, but not playing. When it's RSVP-required pre-selected title game night, I'm a softer boss brown.
hashtag loved this video... hashtag keep it up
So funny! And true. Thank the d20 I am none of those archetypes. Nope. Never.
....I run a weekly boardgames meetup for 20+ folks, we're all not those people.
😂🎲🎲
Absolutely love this. I see all the enneagram types in this hahaha
I am going to institute rule 2. "If you're not ready for your turn... You're getting skipped"....Ha ha ha Love it.
You have to go in 15minutes? Let`s play a short round of Axis&Allies!
There needs to be more people like you around where I 'try' to play! Not enough people appreciate this fabulous hobby! :-D
Dang....the metal box for mobile phones! DANG!!! :)
haha some people are SERIOUS about their no-phone-during-games policy ;)
Lol great stuff - worrying to see so many aspects of my group in this.
A hundred different looks and all cute as a button!
lightning in the box the boardgame.
this triggers my social anxiety, I don't think I'll be hosting game night ever now
Cardigan Paula is my spirit animal.
#Paulaisthebesteverandiloveeverythingyshemakes
Is that hashtag too long???
it's a perfect hashtag ;)
My group is usually pretty good about not being on our phones while playing games, but they are helpful to look up FAQs sometimes and also 2 of our group have kids and need to have their phones in case of emergency. I am usually the host and I can see myself in some of these characters. A lot of times there will be a new game I got that I really want to play but we end up not playing it for a month or so because I don't want to push it on the group. I wish I could just say "This is the game we're playing tonight!" but we are all there to have fun so whatever is good with the group is usually good with me.
I personally think that there are lots of good reasons to have phones at the table, as long as they aren't consistently/constantly keeping people from engaging with each other and the game
I completely agree: JESSICA MADE HER CHOICE.....
Every host category shown here reminds me of some one in my game group. Or in one case, someone, whose game night session we never returned to. 😂😂😂
Absolutely hilarious if Paula doesn't act like all of these at Airecon next year I'll be most disappointed 😉😄
I'm always feeding everyone and checking in with them--so I'm a self-confessed orange! Great video as always :)
I like to think I dress in ye ol Canadian Tuxedo, but I think it's more "I need to grow more hair so I can sport a librarian bun".
There is so much truth in this sketch!
And Ghost Stories!!!! Hahahaha
I love the d6 earrings
Oops I'm denim jacket Paula.
oops
Jean Jacket "I'll play whatever" is me.
fury of dracula no way, hose.(you can take my turn on the table)
Is it okay if I feel specifically called out with every single one of these characters?
you aren't alone. I'll be setting up a helpline.
You must of gone to a lot of game nights to peg all those host types. Such a cutey.
She’s like the Daniel Thrasher of board games.
Aww I feel bad for pink dress host Paula. And whenever I play a review copy with my group I worry that I’m like content creator host Paula.
ooohhh, I going to start designating bathroom break times for my friends, that is a great ideia!!!
I'm definitely a purple shirt host. Lol this was so good.
Jean jacket girl...yep, totally me!
My first thought, "omg her closet will be a disaster after this".
Sweater-vest Paula is the scariest Paula!
Just found this channel. Your stuff is hilarious!
hey, thanks!
Should've just titled this "I'm in this video and I don't like it"
hahah especially considering I'm very much doing a parody of myself with the content creator/reviewer character ;)
@@PaulaDeming The real question is which of your other friends are you totally putting on blast for the other characters =P
Very accurate! Except: That edition of Fury of Dracula in 2,5 hours? Never! But you had one player less (maybe they knew that and left). Also you were trying to speed up turns... so, maybe?
Between Things get Dicey, Watch It Played, Death by Monsters, This Game is Broken, and Gallifrey Gals when do you sleep?
Great stuff, as always! Keep it up! :)
2:04 Oh no...no no no no no!!!
I like the lilac-Paula best. She is so adorable confusing. :)
I'm glad to say I don't identify with any of these portraited. But there's pieces of all of them in me :D
I can't wait to host a gamenight to I can experience one of these scenarios. Until then, it's another solo game night...woo-hoo.
I like the girl with the cardigan.
I play all the games and I'm all the players.
Starting gamers out on Ghost Stories is like starting golfers out on Pebble Beach from the pro tees. I mean if you can get them to a 2nd game night, they'll think about every other game is easy for the rest of time. Only one that is missing is the gamer host going "Thank you for giving up your weekend to play Twilight Imperium/Civilization the board game/insert other extremely long board game here." Funny video as always.
One off-topic thing: Can you and Matthew up your mic volumes a little bit on the WIP Twitch videos? I can't watch live as Twitch hates my lousy internet, but a couple of them I couldn't watch because I couldn't hear one or both of you well at all. The rest haven't been too bad, just have to up the speakers from 60 to 80, but I'm sure I'm not alone in needing better audio on them. Really enjoy those as well. You'll win eventually. I believe in you.
I'll see what I can do
@@PaulaDeming Considering how well you run those streams, I'm sure it'll be great. Seriously, you do such a great job with all the Twitch stuff.
So now I'm wondering how you ever survived our family reunion game nights....omg....we didn't follow any of these hosts rules!! Lol! #muchsimplergames#ruleschangedbytheminute#choas
haha I miss playing dominos and spades with y'all
I wish I could get my wife into games, but after the Clue incident a few people respectfully decline to play when she's playing. I lost the rest after the D&D incident. I'm not 100% sure she didn't self sabotage. I guess games aren't for everyone.
THE RANGE ON DISPLAY HERE
So many hashtags to be famous :-) Thanks for that not-at-all glimpse of reality!
food that you can only eat with you're mouth not with you're hands.
*Any upcoming tv show/movie appearances, Paula?*
Amazing!
I just realized that I am green shirt version... and I'm OK with it
we feel seen :-D
Fresh ground pepper...
... which one should be #hostessGoals? I am usually the peach dress version, which is kinda sucky :( puts me off hosting - but I guess that is why its best to cycle host duties
