Dr. Wooton, I marched in the snare line in the Phantom Regiment Cadets in 1984, and I remember you teaching the ratamacue pattern to us in a sectional. You wrote it out on a chalkboard in one of the practice rooms at Corps Hall. It took us awhile, but all of us could play it at a slow tempo. Later on I learned the flam passage and the backstickings. To this day I use it in my warm up routines before performances. I also remember the original name that was given to the lick although I will not mention it. That might get us into trouble. Thanks for posting this. It brings back a lot of memories.
Matt Eaton please tell us the original name I'm dying to know. I marched snare in high school. We had a short cadence called "stick it in" if it makes you feel any better that us drummers are full of innuendos. I believe it was adapted from a college drumline who played it called by the same name.
I like how Dr. Wooton goes from general to specific. We start out with his intro/thesis statement providing a general overview of what to expect. Then we go into the body of the lesson breaking the lick down into specifics. And then a summary or conclusion of the lesson is provided by discussing what we learned and playing the lick in full.
Thanks for better instructions than just start slow. While true,I'm really glad to see the rudiment pattern on screen. I also like the detailed instructions. Ill start watching again. Thanks
Had the pleasure von meeting you years ago, I was drum captain at Pascagoula high from 96-98 and used a lot of your material. Great drumming brother I recently started back playing as I felt something was missing. Good stuff thanks
The way he explains backsticking is more "in line" with the technique that Larry McCormick taught at the Cavaliers in the 1960's. It is clearly illustrated in his book, "Backsticking".
Erasmo Rodriguez I guess I could make a video but in the mean time I will tell you. First you have to have those cuts in the drum. That makes the difference. It opens up the drum, gives it more body, depth and snare sound. So more low and more high, just like you want to eq your stereo. Now crank the bottom head pretty tight and get the top head to feel good. Not too much tension but enough to give a crisp sound. What people don't realize is that if you crank that top head to high you choke the drum. However, the slits are the difference. That help?
Hey, I'm new to percussion, I'm an assistant band director at a high school and I'm trying to help my percussion. How does one play with "testosterone"? I've never heard that term with music before.
UrLovedOnes "Don't be scared to put some muscle into it and play like you mean it. Drum line instruments are loud, that doesn't mean you play them softer than a drum kit. They are loud because the line has to compete with the rest of the band."
God, this sounds exactly like something my assistant band director would have said. She was the wife of our band director. Haha Mrs. Cobb, is that you?? 😆
Hahahahaha right. I saw that also lol didnt really like this lick. Its all basic stuff.... juat fast... and full of.... well I guess "testosterone" according to him lol
Do you think this would be a good lick to demonstrate rudiments for a college audition video? I'm auditioning for UCLA Marching band this fall 2015 and hoping to find some nice etudes and licks to demonstrate any suggestions help thanks!
Dr Wooten you’ve been a part of my drumming life since learning rudiments in 1986. And people need to lighten up about their feelers getting hurt over testosterone. Your a master of our craft and thank you for ALL your work for these videos. I picked my sticks back up last year after 16 years of silence. I’m getting my chops back after being refreshed from you here and it reminded me where all my books were put. Please don’t let the negativity of SJW’s keep you from making UA-cam vids. I appreciate the humor
typically in a DCI or WGI setting you don't want to have a loose left hand, but in this setting of a very choppy lick it seems to be fine. But you already know that, because you're me and it is now and not the past.
In the moment, even John couldn't heed his own advice and couldn't help but come over the top for the backsticking. It's just natural to want to just muscle your way through those.
+dabeatmanFROMtheNO by the way it's notated, i think it's: the flams are all in 12/8, the single strokes are open and the ratamacues are, first in 17/16 and then 19/16. It's notated that way so you can easily memorize by the groupings of the rudiments. But if you do the math, you'll see that you can notate the last two bars in two bars of 4/4, but the rudiments will be over the bar. :)
+Michael Clifford 12 eight notes, i think it makes more sense in 12/8... the flam accents are usually grouped in eighnt note triplets, but in this case, it's just divided in eight notes. if you do group the flam accents in triplets you will get 5/4 indeed :)

Sounded like a dirt bike with engine issues lol
lol
Bahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!! I literally laughed out loud!!
That's when you know that you are a good player or you have a mediocre sounding marching snare.
Sounds like misfiring
I can’t unhear it
this is the best sounding snare I've heard
St Anger has the greatest production of any album I've ever heard
Kevin Benoit That would be a studio mixed drum.
He was sarcastic Daniel Anderson, St Anger has the worst drum sound in any popular and beloved metal bands.

Loving the tuning of the drum!

Dr.Wooton amazing video. Can you please please please please make a video on how you tune your snare cuz the sound quality is just OMG. it's so good.

John Wooton Dr. Wooton, could you please clarify what you mean when you talk about the "cuts in the drum?" Are you talking about cutting the shell?
Yes, those are rectangles cut out of the shell.
John Wooton Oh wow! I never even considered that! Thanks for the tip!
I have your drumsticks. They are my go to sticks.

Zakuri Sacktail I could play it a lot faster if I did!
Angel Kimberly If I had estrogen I could play something much more difficult. Us guys aren't blessed that way so I have to stick to basics.

no my question is how long has it taken you individually
what time signature is this piece in?
+dabeatmanFROMtheNO by the way it's notated, i think it's: the flams are all in 12/8, the single strokes are open and the ratamacues are, first in 17/16 and then 19/16. Still trying to understand the theory, this is in 5/4 yes?
All of the notes are evenly spaced out and there are 12 notes in the first example, it is most likely in 3/4
+Michael Clifford 12 eight notes, i think it makes more sense in 12/8... the flam accents are usually grouped in eighnt note triplets, but in this case, it's just divided in eight notes. if you do group the flam accents in triplets you will get 5/4 indeed :)
