@@reggaelion86 "But Anyway," in case J&A see your comment and go searching for the title. I also agree that deeper cuts are not necessarily the place to start. So many times, people recommend favorite songs from a band and forget that they journeyed to that song over time listening to the band. Reactors are hearing the band for the first time. Even if you prefer a deeper cut, better to start the reactor on the hits that got you into the band back in the day and start them on the journey the same way you did.
For that reason, yeah, I'd suggest "But Anyway" or "Hook" because those will grab them out of the gate like they did for us... and THEN you can move them deeper into the catalog.

This song is loosely based on the tale of two real-life individuals, Raymond and Lela Howard, an elderly couple who were both dealing with serious mental issues. Being residents of Texas, one day in 1997 they decided to attend an event called Pioneer Day in a nearby part of the state. In the process, they went missing and caught the attention of the media, upon which Tony Scalzo came up with this idealized account of their disappearance.

The tune is solid and stays with you. Based on a series of newspaper articles about a missing couple, the lyric line, "The children woke up and they couldn't find them" causes the listener to think the couple abandoned their minor children, but the couple actually had long been "old and gray", their children were adults in their 80s. Tragically, they drove into a ravine and passed away. The trip was one they took annually. And hey, this band from Austin, it appears at least, gave flamenco dancers a music video gig. 💃

As many have stated, the song is based off of a true story where an elderly couple got in their car to travel to their destination, and never made it home.
    Listen to the words:
The road that they walked on was paved in gold
It’s always summer they’ll never get cold
    They’ll never get hungry
they’ll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
    They wont make it home
    but they really don’t care
    They wanted the highway
    They’re happier there today
An idealized description of the afterlife.
    EDIT:
    I’m back.
Now having done a bit of refresher research, here is the story in a nutshell.
An elderly couple were in the newspaper and Fastball’s lead singer saw a headline that read:
    “Elderly couple missing.”
He started to write the song based on the thought,
“Where were they going without ever knowing the way?”
After the song was finished and recorded, a car was later found matching the description of the missing couple.
Sadly, they had lost control of the vehicle and driven off of a ravine falling into a canyon where they were found by some teenage motorists.
The song would come to take on a much deeper meaning.
On a good note, the family of the deceased couple were very touched by the tribute.
Their story is now eternally immortalized in music.

I was born in 1990 and the 90's feel of it is ingrained in my mind. For years I didn't remember the name of it and searched it without success until I found it again a few years ago. Really not a big deal, but it really remembers me my youth in the 90's for some reason. "The Way" peaked @ #5 in 1998. It was Fastball's biggest hit. They charted 2 follow-up singles: "Fire Escape" (#86) and "Out of My Head" (#20) -- all 3 from their LP "All The Pain Money Can Buy."

One of the more remarkable things about 90s music is how broad the "alternative" umbrella was. The grunge sound was a big part of it, but there were loads of different kinds of sounds that were welcome. The alternative scene started as a movement to make music that was rooted in popular music but didn't constrain itself to the cliches that got onto the charts. Of course, it turned out that the people really wanted to hear that stuff, so it became what was on the charts, but it literally started as an alternative to the popular sounds of the day, so the diversity was a feature, not a bug.

I'm late to the party but in short, yeah, this is another "melancholy" 90's alternative rock song. The story behind the song is actually based on a tragedy, but it's been romanticized in the song.
It was written after a member of the band saw news reports about an elderly couple that had set out to visit a local festival but ended up disappearing.
The woman suffered from Alzheimer's and the man had just had brain surgery. The song basically works on the premise that the couple set out that day to have fun basically like when they were younger before they disappeared.

In MY opinion the couple in the song went on a “journey “ together! Sounds like they died because “the roads they walked on was paved in gold, it’s always summer, they’ll never get cold, never get hungry, never get old and gray”…sounds like heaven to me! I don’t know how they died but they went together! However, that’s just always has been my take on this song! ❤️❤️

Still watching so I don't know if you figured out what happens in the song but it is based on a true story. The band heard a news report of an elderly couple with health that decided to commit suicide by driving away from home and dissappear in to the Arizona desert. They didn't want to burden the family. The "children" were the adult kids of the couple. If I recall, the car was found weeks later but I don't think the couple were found.

    • @benjalucian1515
      @benjalucian1515 2 роки тому +1

It wasn't suicide. It was dementia. They got lost and couldn't find their way back home. Police stopped them but didn't realize they were in distress. Car eventually left the road and ended up at the bottom of the ditch, hundreds of miles from where they were supposed to be. The couple died. This song was based on theories before their bodies were found

The story this song was based upon ultimately had a tragic ending. The couple in their 80's were returning home form a music festival in Temple, TX and became disoriented. Several weeks later, their car was discovered by hikers at the bottom of a ravine in Arkansas. The couple had perished in the crash, but that was not known by the writer of the song at the time. The video was was also produced before the discovery of the couple, thus the party-like theme of the video. The premise being that the couple had just left their past life behind to start a new one. The true conclusion of the story was anything but party-like.
