This tale, also known under its alternative title 'To Be Taken With A Grain of Salt', is one of several ghost stories written by one of the most celebrated of all nineteenth century English novelists, Charles Dickens. Loosely based on the real-life murder of Lord William Russell, the story follows a juror on a murder trial who experiences a series of unsettling visions... The story starts at 00:01:25 Narrated/performed by Simon Stanhope, aka Bitesized Audio. Have even introduced me to stories by Dickens that I had no idea existed!Along with many, many, other fabulous authors from similar period, you never disappoint, your channel is pure gold✊♥️
It's been a long time since I read any Charles Dickens. Thank you for bringing this story to life in such a creative way. Your voice and intonation and different accents were perfect
Famished and partnered by parochial parasites. The writing prowess of some great authors truly surprises me. Some phrases go in so nonchaleantly(sp?) that one misses the real work that goes into writing stories well. I find it fascinating. Pardon me if I've made mistakes.
I always read the information which you put in the description. I had to go look up the history of Lord William Russell’s murder. And it led me down a very interesting path. As always, your narration is outstanding. I never enjoyed ghost stories that much until I found your channel. 6:44
I've got to say, Simon, that your narrations are wonderful. I also am grateful for your selections of stories. Narration and story mesh so well... And I really like the time period you choose - late 19th Century, early 20th Century. I've loved stories from that era since childhood, many decades ago.
Many people think *Dickens* is a dark writer ... I think his story: *The Haunted Man & the Ghosts Bargain* is scary b/c of its language & repetition of that theme of *being haunted* . The ghost/s he writes about in *A Christmas Carol* are likewise & here in this tale too. *Dickens* himself was quiet the character if his bio is to be believed & I've no reason not to believe it. Thanks much *Simon*
Although I am saddened that I have only just found your channel, there is a bonus in my tardiness. There are so many stories to listen to! I have started listening to 1 story a night with my 3 year old while he falls asleep. And then one of the longer ones when it's time for me to sleep. When I run out I will find the ones I missed the end to ! You are extremely talented, have a beautiful voice and I love your taste of stories. I hope to be able to "buy you a coffee" or two someday.
Wonderful narration! I was hooked from start to finish, except for a few intervals when I was required to respond to family members talking to me; my irritation was immense! 😅 Thank you Simon.
Brilliant. Dickens doesn't pander to an unlearned audience. Most of his speech is geared toward, what was in his day, a standard vocabulary. However, there are a few words that could cause readers to need to look them up. We were always taught not to cause your reader any reason to put your story down. Dickens wrote so well and on subject matter, that so captured his reader's attention and desire for intrigue and resolution, that he /she could do no less than come back to the story after the definition had been revealed. That, my friend's is excellent literature.

I'm getting this 3 days late actually I don't know if I got it at all but it could not have come for me at a better moment. Making myself some bedtime hot oat milk with cinnamon and nutmeg~lovely~and about to let you take me away from the 21st century~at least for a while... I need to be BEGONE!🥱
