Awesome DIY vid Gill. BeautifuL car. (going to be). Hey just looking out for ya, wear a respirator when sanding that dust ok you shall stay healthy for sure that way. i know it sucks to wear, but it is good to keep out harmful solids. Cheers Gill, have a good one and thanks a ton for this great tutorial.
Keep the videos coming man and great job! I’m restoring my 81’ z28 and I have a lot of the same issues so your videos are very helpful! Thank you!
It was useful, thank you🤗
Looks nice but keep dog away from chemicals and dust
Great video and the work is great to watch
I'll have the next video out soon!
Love the videos, my dream car for sure. Just had to use my z28 savings due to covid issues but I will for sure get one of these one day! Subbed and cant wait for the next video...!
They sure are beautiful cars, covid really messed with everyone one way or another. I'm sure you'll find the right one before you know it!
Dogg-o wants to help ! Lol, it's funny how GSD's all share certain things about their personalities. Looks like a puppy still, 9 months old ?
Cool project man. I'm building a 1970 Camaro in my garage too. Replaced both rear quarters, floors in trunk and one piece full floor in the car. New roof with A pillars, new tail pan, new front fenders, new front upper and lower valance... well I guess it be easier to say everything is new except for the firewall and the rear package tray.. lol. Did it all myself, it was really fun. I enjoyed the challenge.
Good job!
Great job, I'm redoing a 1979 camaro, seems like they all have the same issues. If you don't mind could you please give up your sources of parts. These cars are getting harder to find parts and at affordable prices. Thanks and I will keep watching your videos.
I use Ricks Camaros for the body parts, all the other stuff I normally go to restomod route and fabricate new stuff to fit.
I’m gonna have to patch one of my quarter panels on my 77 too. Only thing is the quarter panel patch I bought is dented a little bit. Would you use it and just slap some body filler over it or would you just buy a patch panel that isn’t dented
Nice work! I'm nearing the completion of a full restoration on a matching numbers 1979 Camaro. Are you using a flux core welder? If so what temp and wire speed were you using? Thanks.
Currently working on a 78 type LT
That's awesome! These are awesome cars, hopefully I'll have another video out this week!
Hey man! Nice work. Have an 80 Z28 I'm working on. Have the typical second gen issues. Bought the panels. Have the welder and a car tent. Good luck with yours!
That's awesome! I hope it goes well!
@@gillhe1 Long road so far but it's coming
Oh yeah, patience is definitely a virtue when it comes to restoration lol

I’m so happy I found these videos on your build. I have an 81 Camaro Z28 that I’m going to restore. I’m doing the paint myself and EVERYTHING else. You have any tips for me?
Just stick to it man! There are too many people that start projects and never finish them because the get difficult or they lose interest. Auto body work is a lot easier than people think and if you're just patient it will work out. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
@@gillhe1 I sure tha hell will ask you lol
Same, man. 81 z28. I’ll be watching his videos too!
@@gillhe1 when are you going to upload something 😂
@@flying-fijiantv6282 hopefully within the next week, the air compressor decided to quit working on me so I'm having to do a few things without it.
Grinding equals gouging
What kind of build are you doing? I’ve got a 79 Camaro RS T-top that I’m currently building. I’m doing a pro touring build and I’m pretty far along but still have a lot to do. Hoping to be the first to do something a little different than most 78-81 pro touring builds. Great work man, don’t lose motivation and keep the videos coming.
That's awesome! I don't want to give too much away on future videos but let's just say it will be one slick pro touring z28
@@gillhe1 Cant wait to see it man, I’m constantly always taking ideas from other builds, if you got some ideas I haven’t seen yet that would be pretty dope.
The time and effort on this compared to a full panel. A full panel hides the seems. And sail panal has a lip.
Very hard to blend bondo in so you can't see it after it's painted. Bondo cracks and comes off.
Never patch a quarter panel always replace the entire panel.
hey gill this is awesome! do you do any side work by chance?
Yes I do, feel free to message me at gillsgarage@yahoo.com
Any reason why you used self etching primer instead of epoxy primer? Also, I found using strip disks on a grinder a much easier way to strip paint/rust prior to body work. They don't leave hot spots and warp the metal like flap disks do. What did you do with the inside of the quarter panel? Did you fill the areas in where you removed metal?
In my opinion from previous experiences self etching primer adheres to bare metal better than epoxy. On the strip disks for the grinder instead of flap disks I do agree with you. I just didn't get any for doing the lower quarter panels but I more than likely will for the rest of the paint stripping. Also for the back of the quarter panel I ended up welding in new pieces to make it like oem, I just couldn't find the footage due to technical problems. Thank you for the comment!
Hey man I noticed your Oklahoma shirt I would really appreciate advise on 70-81 camaros because I’m looking for one but can’t seem to find a good one
Well if you could find a 1970 that would be awesome! I've noticed that the cars are a little more difficult to find at least in Oklahoma. In all honesty I would probably get a roller, completely strip it apart and build it from the ground up. But with a clean title, no motor, and little rust I wouldn't spend more than 3k on the car. However I would almost guarantee the floor pans will have rust holes.
@@gillhe1 thank you for the advice stay safe man and good luck on the car!
Awesome video man, where did you get the panels from?
Thank you! I got them from Rick's Camaro. Great company and if you have to get multiple pieces they normally give you a great deal on parts and shipping if you shoot them a call.
Hey when you grind sand always wear a dust mask please!
NAH!!! Us real men prefer our chemicals directly inhaled. Builds character!
😂😂
How to replace patch panels and how to chase your tail lol
Haha yeah there's going to be a decent amount of that in this series. Somethings are learned along the way and it's part of the beautiful experience.
Always best to leave the factory body line if at all possible. It maintains extraordinary strength and those cambodian made patch panel body lines are never as straight as factory lines. Trying to put that shape back in wastes tons of time and it was already in the original panel. Plus, that creased body line prevents the cut edge from warping once it's cut. Patch panels are meant to be cut to size. They're as big as they are in case you need that much new material. You don't have to use all of it. Not a horrible video. We've all started out somewhere. The high end processes and procedures come with decades of doing of trial and error.
Agreed but due to rust on the back it had to come out.
@@gillhe1 Yeah. Then that's the only choice. After 40 years of restoring old rusted out pigs, I've found replacing the entire quarter is much more economical. If the bottom of the quarter is that rusted, the wheel houses usually are also. And I'd always rather spot weld a new panel than tig across the entire face of a patch. To each their own.
When you start bondoing car will never look straight.
He let's his dog breath bondo in.
So what did you do for the interior metal you cut away?
I just made a flat piece that filled the gap and welded it in on the back, sorry I didn't get that in the video.
Can IU use a flux core?
Yeah, just clean the metal really well and then grind it smooth
i am glad i don't have to do this on my project i got 3 79 z28 one is a z28 rs t top the build car the rest are for parts if i need any one has new interior got all 3 for free no rust in them good clean cars
Hey thats awesome! Congratulations!!
I have an 81 t-top that I’m about to start. I need interior and a nose if you have them. I’ll pay
I can't believe you didn't fix the inner wheel well before you welded the quarter panel on come on man
I made one from scratch and closed it in after, thanks for the comment bub.
@@gillhe1 one hacker to another have a great 4 of July
Lol you too bubba
@@gillhe1 I just picked up a 79 off the road since 2007 hop up 350 original paint body needs no rust panels solid as rock small surfaced rust and paint
That's pretty awesome! If I were to start this project over again I would have completely stripped it down and had the body acid washed then I would start replacing floor boards and quarter panels. however, at this point I just want to get the car finished, I'm about to post a somewhat lengthy video on the Camaro.
This is a poor method the car will need bondo now
Better to replace the entire unit
Bondo cars don't resell well
Very poor method of car repair , kid
