I think you have some of the best beginner friendly content on UA-cam in regards to modern metal. It's always straightforward and summed up concisely. Would love to see some videos on how you go about mixing/EQing your songs.
Hey@@KeyanHoushmandLive, would be great if you would record a complete mixing session. I know that GGD go into this in their master classes, but it always seems to me that the tutorials are for advanced users. I would be especially interested in your instruments-master bus and the routing. Keep it up, you're doing great.
Hey dudes! Hopefully this helped you guys out if you're struggling on translating the sounds in your head into drum sounds. Let me know what you think!
Well, as it seems to be, they have good ears by metal standards. Their tone is pretty balanced, but it's very full, clear, and easy to use in a mix, but also not the easiest tone to achieve. Their gear is just the easiest way to achieve their tone, which I believe is a good enough general tone that it'll easily become generic (because of the number of people and bands using similar tones) in the next few years especially with all these new plugins and whatnot making that style of tone easier to get. Now, would I use someone else's signature guitar in a band setting? Not really, nor would I spend any more than production guitar cost on one. That's a damn good idea for a drinking game though lmao.
@@KeyanHoushmandLive Aren't you ? Your riffs are absolutely great and you program everything. You have every right to be called a musician ! And thanks for such great content !
@@thedudeofficial69 that’s an interesting way of looking at things. Personally…. I don’t see an issue with signature gear. It’s just gear. Everyone is using something that their heroes are using. The les Paul is one of the mainstay guitars of all time and it’s just a sig. There’s no rules to this game. I say if a piece of gear sounds good to you and I sprites you to keep playing… then bang on that thing till it falls to pieces. At the end of the day we are all just trying to write and make music and be happy. Whatever helps one to do that is fair game to me.
drummer here. can confirm. it's what you put around the riff that makes it interesting. i like to add a "what the fuck" fill in the middle of a verse when it repeats at a later part of the song just to introduce a little bit of variation. also, switching between cymbals for certain parts for a different feel (if the riff is the same).
Gotta be honest, I've watched several of your videos but that cut of "China!" made me hit the sub button. Well done. Glad you're enjoying some success after working so hard.
This is great Keyan. I'm sure I've watched this before at some point but having almost finished writing guitars for a project I'm on I'll come back again and use these strategies for sure! Not convinced about a lot of my placeholder grooves at the moment
Thank you so much for this video! I've been looking for something like this for sometime, I've been watching quite a bit of your content lately and it's been nothing less than stellar.
This is well done... you approach drum programming quite similar to me. I'm not a "drummer" primarily, but used to have my own set that had to sell when I was living in an apartment.. this stuff seems so obvious and kind of self explanatory to me, as I really just program exactly how I would play it but I so often forget that this isn't a necessarily a natural thing everyone can do. My biggest general tips when programming, a pretty dramatic difference in velocities on the cymbals in alternating fashion. So like 120, (40), 120, (40), where you really only "hear" the 1 and 3 but it gets filled out with the 2 and 4. Also as you cover, always adjust velocities so things aren't flat. Figure out what notes are meant to be emphasized and I suggest programming them first at your highest velocity, then never allow anything else to reach that velocity. Lastly, unlike others, I believe copying and pasting is totally okay, but after you do, I would add subtle changes in each phrasing or couple bars or whatever. (An extra bass drum hit in one, a longer fill in another, etc).
@@KeyanHoushmandLive oh yeah I know what you're talking about. Even though the sound you get from the drums sound huge, it would still be cool to see what you have setup for it (Kontakt library wise).
I'm the 420th person to like this video (bong rip). Anyway, I've been building my DAW with plugins (amp sims, IR's, drum plugins etc...); and I've noticed that if you aren't careful, you will lose track on where you store these files. Do you have any recommendations on how to organize your third-party softwares for your DAW? I think that would be a good little video for people whom are starting off for self-producing artists such as myself. We really are going in blind with all of this, and though it gets simpler after spending many hours of trial and errors, it's intimidating at the same time when we watch the more experienced people on UA-cam. I always ask myself, "How tf did get to that step? Is there a tutorial on the setup?"...questions like that. Great recommendation btw on NaLex Ninja. After dabbling for a while with it, I ended up using Ignite Emissary as my go to. Keep up the great work man.
I agree with modern and massive I love it but those room mics are pretty gnarly, The p4 kit really takes on the invasion UI which I feel would be user friendly for anyone starting out. Thanks for this.
Awesome content, yet again! +1 for the mixing tutorial or a video about how you go about getting so much definition with those massive chords. It's too easy to wash them out with distortion but you make them so audible and musical. It'd be cool to see how you double track and edit takes etc. Keep up the good work.
Mid-range dawg. I think he uses bareknuckle juggernaut pickups which have a really articulate, mid-forward sound, and cut really well with lots of definition.
Could you make a video on songwriting? I've been stuck in writing riffs and songs and I can't come up with anything original. I love your content and your music is the sound I want to achieve. If you could make a video where it shows your whole process and some tips for writing modern prog chord filled riffs. Thanks
Hey man, great content. I have a question. Did you map your drum samples in the piano roll keys or you are using the generic mapping that comes with GGD?
I just got into recording and stuff and I’m having trouble figuring out how to actually make the drums. Not processing or writing or recording, but how to actually push buttons and those button pushes translate into drum beats. I got a 25 key midi controller and I thought it would solve my problem but there’s so much to it and it’s kind of a pain in the ass lol. Do you have a video showing how you literally MADE the drums beat by beat?
I know with FXpansion’s BFD3 they have a range control that changes the dynamics of the drum hits. Would it be better to use this range control rather than humanize the dynamics of the midi velocities?
When you record guitar, are you arming a mixer track and recording directly into the playlist? That’s how I’ve been doing it but I’m not sure if it s the best way
Great video, I watch them all. I have a different question. I try to not sound like the people that inspire me, especially Yngwie, even tho I love that dude, do you listen to them everyday? Are you into Archspire or Brain Drill? How about SpAwn of Possession?
I feel like such an idiot asking this...but how to do get the sequencer to show up? Every time I launch the vst plugin all it shows is something like a control panel. Ive tried it in Mixcraft and Reaper and its both the same.
Keyan, first - big up's for your videos! I really dig the djent'y free tone You posted, actually using it in my album that I'm solo-writing. But anyway - could You propose a free solution to bass track? So far I've found Ample Bass P II Lite, but it's tuning possibilities are restricted to 2 semitones :( Ultimately I will check out some paid alternatives, of course!
That's literally what this whole video is about. Haha. You should probably learn to play drums, or start practicing programming 👍. If you're struggling to make it work by ear, buy EZdrummer and midi packs.
So I was using GGD in Logic Pro X and the “problem” I was coming across is that you cant EQ individual drums within GGD (Maybe I’m missing something lol). Now they sound great normally but sometimes I feel I want to do specific EQing at certain parts/on certain drums, etc. You have this problem at all or am I crazy? (This is barely a problem these drums sound great).
Eric Goodmark you need to route the kit pieces in specific tracks in your daw so you can then render/freeze 'em and mix 'em. if you don't know how to do it GGD made some videos about it some time ago
Just look at GGD's UA-cam channel, they have some suuuuuuper helpful videos about routing GGD in Logic. This one from Nolly helped me so much when I first got it: /watch?v=sG5oHYUrtQs&t=8s

I guess Im kinda randomly asking but do anybody know of a good site to watch newly released series online ?
@Korbyn Carson try flixzone. You can find it on google =)
@Ralph Ahmed Definitely, I've been using FlixZone for months myself :)
Defs getting some Jetpacks Was Yes vibes 🤙
Hey dudes! Hopefully this helped you guys out if you're struggling on translating the sounds in your head into drum sounds. Let me know what you think!
I literally just started programming my own drums instead of using midi grooves today. This is great, thank you.
Haven't watch yet, love it already!
Hahaha thanks dude
I'm going to start a new game where I take a shot every time I see a musician using all Periphery gear.
it’s just that good i suppose
Very kind of you to refer to me as a ‘musician’

Awesome stuff bud! Been needing help with this for a bit! Thank you and keep up the great work!

Just discovered your channel. Great content man. Your videos are a gift! Cheers 🍻

BTW, I finally got a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 :)))
Thanks bruh! This has been really helpful!
Great video, man! Glad to see someone else uses Fl Studio for metal/rock music! I rarely see anyone use that daw for those genres haha
Love you man
dude those guitars worked beautifully together could we get a tutorial on how u come up with stuff like that?
should release the preset you have for the Periphery IV kit, that would be sweet. Or go in depth of how its mixed!
I use the GGD drum mapping scheme that’s built into most if not all GGD libraries

Love the tips!
this will help us a lot❤️❤️❤️
I hope so!
in the next video please do something about bass programming
Nice vid man. I just bought P4 kit and this is pretty helpful since I also use FL studio. Your riffs are very killswitch engage feely in this one lol.

Hey Keyan, do you go live-streaming?? I'm positive I'm not the only one who'd love to watch you write and mix live in real time!
Could you do a video on your drum processing/mixing please? Would love to see a video using free plugins for processing/mixing drums
Thank you, not even GGD gives drum building tutorials and it's their product.
