I've also started using soothe2 to sidechain, it's amazing! I tend to use a sharper setting when sidechaining vocals or lead guitars to really only cut out the notes that are being sung/played 😊
Soothe sidechain crew rise up! I was looking in to TrackSpacer when I read that I could use Soothe (which I already owned) to perform the same function. Works nicely.
Regardless of how far I've come, I still forget things I've learned. Like, ridiculously easy things to forget. 1) I forget to sidechain literally anything. 2) the end.
That was a stellar tutorial mate. Aside from the side-chaining knowledge I just gained, I feel like the way you described your treatment of lead guitar (as if it’s the vocals) actually gives me a more tangible approach to incorporate in my own writing. Thank you for this!
I've been struggling with these issues a lot and have learned that this is crucial not only for punch and clarity, but this also increases perceptive loudness since the instruments frequencies do not overlap that much calculating into a louder sounding mix. This is evident especially when you compare heavy songs on youtube and the modern ones that are sidechained clearly sounds way louder.
Thank you for this video. I just remixed my latest demo using this method and it's amazing. It makes so much sense. The trick with the leads and rhythm is gold. Love your stuff 👊🤘
This I really all overwhelming. My mixes make me not want to even post anything but I do anyway in hopes someone will understand and like my music. Maybe one day I can be less terrible at recording and mixing. If you guys cannot tell I am VERY frustrated 😕 good video keyan
Just heard some, ain't so bad! Get room treatment, corner bass traps good start. Learn gain-staging (let kick and snare peak @ -6db, everything else get the level to -18db,) put a buss compressor on the master buss, internal sidechain to about 150hz, fast attack and release, compress about 2db, and don't limit it to heck and that should be enough to get started. Don't get frustrated I've been s--t at it for years lol.
TrackSpacer is a pretty dope alternative that kind of does the same thing as Soothe but for much lower CPU cost across a 32 band EQ with a much simpler UI. I'm more inclined to use it liberally everywhere that I might need it. I do still use Soothe a ton though for all sorts of stuff, love them both. This might only be an issue in Logic, but sometimes it looks like there's lag/latency when side chaining with Soothe. Like, Soothe will duck the frequency but I'm constantly skeptical that it's a few milliseconds too late and overall just not ducking when the transient *actually* hits, if that makes sense. It's hard to tell though, but side chain latency is a concern with Logic across different web forums. Not sure about other DAWs, kinda curious if anyone else has noticed this or if I'm just being hilariously paranoid.
Some interesting approaches here, thanks for that! However for a really "fair" comparison between with an no sidechain the no sidechain mix levels would have to be adjusted accordingly. So less rhythm guitar, more kick, snare & solo and then compare once everything sounds like it has the same proximity as in the sidechained version.
I love using Soothe2 but forgot I could sidechain with it, this is really helpful, thank you. I don't want to pay for the ProMB I've already spent too much on these damn plugins haha
soothe 2 just for a sidechain?! like how do you have CPU power for all of those side chains lol. also i'm shocked you are using fruity loops as your daw when you do metal. never seen that before.
This is awesome but at the end of the day I feel like low end informations really depends on the mix or genre of metal… now and days the kicks thump is comepltely cut out I’ve noticed with in a lot of mixes. Either way this is amazing thansk for the info
The no side-chain does sound muddy but that's because you didn't EQ your stuff properly. Drums and bass sound fine as is. You just need to clean up your rhythm guitars and everything will sound clearer.
off topic: how did you manage to keep FL's cpu usage so damn low despite having a full blown session with multiple instances of soothe? if i do the same it'll probably crash lol
So if I route my kick track to my bass bus and turn the output down, and I just turn on the sidechain option in soothe2, it will automatically sidechain whatever frequencies I set on the graphic Eq?
I believe you need to route to channels 3/4 on the input as 1/2 would be your stereo/monitor out. So routing to 3/4 is the default for programs to use as a side chain input.
I get the idea and it is needed sometimes, but this was a bit to over used for my liking (maybe to make your point more clear for the video?). The rhythm guitars loose their drive and that is exactly what they are there for in my opinion. They are being ducked to much. I would ease off on the side chaining on those, or lower the amount it is ducking.
I am losing my mind on a guitar tone cuz its super muffeled. How do i fix it. Also im the one that tagged you in the tiktok videoooo. With the tone i also followed your video for a tone and its phenomenal exept for the muddyness
Lower the output of the vst if you are using one, lower the gain at 0 on the interface, and last but not least lower the gain on the amp starting at noon and go from there
Soothe2 has soooo much latency or something. If I put it on any of my tracks, the track will instantly be out of sync. Its pretty much un-usable for me.
The info in the video is great. You can totally do this with any multi-band compressor that has sidechain functionality. He’s just using his preferred method.
It is. It’s much more than just a basic EQ, and really shines when being used like Keyan shows. Wait for it go on sale - I get the apprehension, but it’s really a phenomenal tool. They have one or two sales a year, usually Black Friday.
Trackspacer does a very similar thing in an easier way to set up. It’s not as versatile or intelligent as sooth, but it will get you the same idea as what is being presented for far less coin - for this purpose specifically.
There's a free plugin called TheMasker that does pretty much the same thing, obviously isn't as feature-rich but it will do the job as far as the sidechaining method goes.
Thanks for watching! Here’s the plugins I used in this video:
Soothe2: sweetwater.sjv.io/4P1R6n
ProMB: sweetwater.sjv.io/3eGXbM
Broke musician here 👋🏽 Are there any similar plugins for free?

Soothe2 for sidechain makes a lot of sense, no idea why I haven't tried this... Thanks for the ideas Keyan!

The most impressive part of this is you are able to use fl studio. I found it so confusing for anything that isn’t edm

I just begin to use sidechain on my mixes and then you do this video for the type of music I do. This is video is just what I needed! Thank you!
Thanks for making these longer videos there is a lot of really cool stuff here I will definitely try out !

I've been learning the importance of this and similar techniques recently; they really top of the mix.
great idea to listen before and after using this technique, now everything is clear

I just commented the first part about this (cpu usage). Seems we think alike 😀
This information is invaluable. Thank you for making it make sense.

Tbh the no side-chaining one sounds a lot better. The sidechained version has all the energy taken away and the snare sounds off.

Which scale was the music wrtten in? Sounds really good.
off topic: how did you manage to keep FL's cpu usage so damn low despite having a full blown session with multiple instances of soothe? if i do the same it'll probably crash lol
Cpu ?
its just a matter of having a better computer, FL is just monitoring your computer's CPU usage
Is there a benefit to this vs using trackspacer? As I imagine TS has a much smaller cpu cost.
How close is Soothe 2 to Ozones unmask function?
So if I route my kick track to my bass bus and turn the output down, and I just turn on the sidechain option in soothe2, it will automatically sidechain whatever frequencies I set on the graphic Eq?
