    In the forest of Chaumont, tall and grand,
    Lies the oak to shape by Dan's skilled hand.
    To rebuild the château, strong and true,
    With nature’s gift, dreams renew.
    Dan fells the trees with careful grace,
    Each beam a testament to this place.
    From forest deep, the oak he brings,
    To build a home where memories cling.
    Brick by brick and beam by beam,
    He restores the château, fulfills the dream.
    Minimal footprint, eco-wise,
    A legacy beneath the skies.
    With saw and hammer, skill and pride,
    He builds anew, side by side.
    From Chaumont’s woods to château halls,
    A vision of beauty, where history calls.

    • @ikerstges
      @ikerstges Місяць тому +10

      @@Daria-ew5gs Green oak is still very wet, which is an advantage when creating joinery: once the joints are together, the wood will dry-and-shrink over time and tighten the joints. Generally it means that you need to choose your wood correctly, depending on the direction of the growrings it shrinks more in one direction that the other so you'd need to choose the tenons with growrings directed such that they will shink little, while the mortises shoud be opposite. (As a bonus: it is far easier on the tools; tools cut much nicer throug the fresh wood.)

    • @tbonemc2118
      @tbonemc2118 Місяць тому +8

      I think the paint is more to lessen splits and cracks in the ends of boards caused by them drying out quicker than the centres
      Twisting etc is controlled by stacking the lumber properly on a flat surface.

    • @fotter9567
      @fotter9567 Місяць тому

      @@tbonemc2118 Twisting is prevented by using the right logs and by cutting the tree in the right way. Oak works so much, and the last thing you want are planks along the entire tree trunk. But hey, Dan is a master carpenter/joiner/mason/dog breeders/chef/gardener/film maker. Of course he knows better than the experts.

    Those oak trees were planted in the forest t for the very reason that you are using them as a replacement when needed.
    Oxford University in Britain had to use the five hundred old oaks planted in the 15th or 16th century a few decades back.
    The old carpenters were also farmers and foresters. They knew what they were doing thanks to the knowledge that was taught in the guilds.

    Great job using the Oak out the forest. When I lived in Normandy, I built a dormer window frame out of 4x4 inch oak. The front frame sat on the stone wall. Used mortice and tenon joints to join the wood together. Carried each piece upstairs. Had concreted above the stone wall top a pad for the oak frame to sit on. Then fitted the horizontal posts that the new window sat on and above into the vertical posts and then fitted the whole assembly into the mortices of the oak bottom wall plate post sitting/ bolted on the concrete pad. On top of the posts used oak posts again to create the dormer sides wall plate. Enjoyed doing it. Zink apron and soakers etc.

    You guys need a log roller. They have a swinging hook to grab various sized logs, and then a pin at the other end that bites into the log. You use the leverage of the handle to roll the log over. Easy peasy.

    Just a word of caution, although you may already have considered it. Structural timber is graded for its strength just make sure the timber you are using is fit for purpose. Great idea to use the oak you had cut down though.

    Interesting recent tidbit I recently heard about Oak in the North American continent - not sure if it also applies to Europe. The Oak trees are not replenishing themselves. It's not understood why, but recent surveys of the forests found that where there are Oak trees, the predominant understory is composed of trees other than Oak. Perhaps we have too many species now relying on the acorns as a food source - hard to say - but the bottom line is that Oak trees are not replenishing themselves and we may soon come to realize that our Oak forests have disappeared. I've notice this locally as well. In addition, many of our mature oaks are dying off as a result of attacks by non-native species of insects.

    seasoning that wood may be tricky, large mills usually have great big "sauna" like rooms of high humidity, that they gradually drop the moisture down over weeks so the wood doesnt crack, that slow bakes it to dry it out for maximum strength?
