I absolutely love boxwoods and thank God I haven’t had to deal with this besides spider mites. Boxwood is actually my favorite plant. They give such beautiful hedges and especially topiaries.

Done! thanks for that. Our garden here in France has tons of native box in all shapes and sizes - if we lose it, we lose all structure. Cant wait to use the products.

@@r.b.8061 ours are not formal at all, and some are more than three metres high. Gorgeous, but now so vulnerable. We're at 850 metres, so the Pirale only comes in sometimes (they usually don't go above 600 metres), at the end of the season, and if it's unusually hot.

After you mentioned top buxus health mix last year, I bought a tub of 100 tablets, I treated myself to a battery sprayer (game changer) I have so much box in all my gardens. I sprayed my box all through last summer, wow what a difference it has made my box looks so healthy now, totally transformed, so like you, I would definitely recommend. (Treat yourself to a battery sprayer, if you have a lot of box, can get the job done in a quarter of the time, so much easier)

Great to hear it’s also worked for you. The battery sprayer sounds really good. I’ve had trouble with sprayers in the past as they quickly get blocked and I’m trying to look after my current one better, making sure I wash it out after use but it can still be a bit rubbish at times! Thanks for the tip, it would be great to get the job done quicker!

@@MurphysGarden I use the battery sprayer with the box caterpillar stuff in as well, it has never blocked on anything but like you say, thorough cleaning and regular shaking when using products is the answer.

Xentari is not really cost effective when it comes to tackling a lot of box plants in your garden, I use a product called Decis from Agrichem and spray 3 times a year (April, mid May and July). The pheromone traps are a waste of time, they tell you that you have a problem in your area but as one day soon the whole country will be affected then its best to start with preventative spraying. We don't have blight (yet) as possibly Hertfordshire is relatively dry compared to other counties, however I will start using the spray, I already use a granular health mix to fertilise. I can honestly say my box are in rude health but blight is the main worry now. Great video, I will get a stiff brush just in case, top tip!

A fantastic video. I’m not sure where you are in the UK, but in Kent the box caterpillar has devastated the plant. Most garden centres don’t stock it now the problem is so large, but substitute ilex or yew instead.
Having quite a few large buxus, I’ve now started my routine of observation, feeding, spraying … had a few so far, but using Xen Tari has great effect.
This is my 3rd year of the fight, so far only lost one pyramid whilst on holiday in the first year when my knowledge base was zero. I’m now pretty clued up in the yearly cycle and what to look for … it’s a constant battle, but I’m not giving up!
I sincerely hope you never get them, the cost alone for the amount of plants you have will be unviable.

We are in Shropshire. It’s s so sad and devastating. I sincerely hope we don’t get it, but I guess it’s inevitable. I can cope with blight but I would have to give up work to be on caterpillar patrol all day and I don’t think that’s viable 🤣 I will enjoy it for now and face that when and if it happens! Thanks for watching

@@MurphysGarden Hi Jenny, good news is Xen Tari works fantastically well. (Just expensive, but I’ve noticed a few other companies selling the same products, hopefully drive the price down, also ultra bug clear 2 now says it’s for box caterpillar now) Between me writing the previous post and now, I’ve just found 2 one inch dying caterpillars on the compost under a box sphere.
This was sprayed 2 days ago. All others checked and no caterpillars. I’m hoping spraying them nice and early this year I’ll break the cycle of them turning to moths. June / July will be the next batch to knock out.
Hopefully things will get easier, I’m sure many companies are working on future products 😁

Fantastically useful, thank you. I watched a similar video by Bunny Guinness about 3 years ago, but you have produced something more comprehensive. I have used Top Buxus since then and no problems. I have been careful to mulch and fertilise too. But the hundreds of cuttings I took (a mistake) are now coming into mature hedges throughout the garden and I could face a calamity soon ! I was wondering about the blight resistant varieties, but with caterpillar infestation, Box still seems to represent a risky proposition unfortunately. Nb Love the colour of your front door and the tulip varieties around 9.20 in the video.

Thank you John for your kind comments. Like you, I want to keep the box I’ve got but probably best not to add anymore. I also saw Bunny’s videos about blight resistant varieties ‘Heritage’, ‘Babylon Beauty’, ‘Skylight’ and ‘Renaissance’, they still don’t seem to have hit the nurseries yet, have you ever seen them? Perhaps nurseries are reluctant to sell it due to the caterpillar threat 🐛
      Thanks for watching

@@MurphysGarden Googled them a few weeks ago and could only find Heritage available at £28 each for a 2 litre plant; perhaps more will be available in the summer or I didn't google it very well ? Not sure if 'resistant' works on the same principle as terracotta pots - a frost resistant pot eventually cracks, but a frost proof one never does. I would really need a blight 'proof' plant to justify waiting for another hedge to grow.

Thank you for this video! Luckily I have only to deal with this moth (comes right out of hell) and bacillus thuringiensis is the way to go (xentari). I decided, I will fight for my topiary but will not ad more box in my garden. An infestation of this moth is able to kill a plant. In my neighborhood are many dead box-skeletons. Good substitute for the use is yew (not for the exact look). I consider to use sorts of privet in my garden, cause it has a similar look.

@@MurphysGarden if you haven’t done already, put a little bit of garden lime around your box. The plants like more the alkaline side. Crossing fingers for the box. My hope is, cause no one in my neighborhood care about their box, in the future there is an island of box (my garden) without caterpillars 🐛 ☠
