- I was homeschooled from kindergarten through 12th grade, and wanted to share with you all my experience. 😊 I have some pros and cons to talk about today.
Hi everyone! My name is Julie, and I'm a mama to four. My kids are 7, 5, 4, and 2. I post videos every Monday that are either mommy tips, favourites, homeschool curriculum reviews, birth/postpartum tips, hauls, or some other kind of 'mommy' video! I also post vlogs most Fridays. I was in public school my whole life and experienced all of the same cons and more! Even with a different teacher each year I still learn to read well until I started homeschooling and teaching my own children to read! I think no matter how you are educated and some point we all feel left out of the loop, but at lest with homeschooling it's a lot less loops and not as detrimental to your self confidence, at lest in my opinion. Thanks for sharing this is really encouraging for all us homeschooling moms!

I was homeschooled and have had my experience receiving all these odd questions regarding my school situation. Homeschooling is great, but it is not for everyone. My mom refused to put me in public school for religious reasons. Looking back, I would have to say that I regret being homeschooled. I need that structure and discipline. I was always behind in grade 1 to 12. At 14 I could barely read. Getting my GED would prove to be difficult for me since I had little to no education and I could not write. I managed to get my GED before turning 18. My main motivation that pushed me was I was tired of being behind. Currently, I am majoring in mathematics because that was the only subject I was good at. So far I been getting good grade in algebra, trigonometry, calculus 1, and calculus 2. Seeing my current grades makes me think I would have done better if a went to public school. I believe that being in a literal school forces myself to be more discipline.

I can't comment on your particular situation, but I would like to encourage you and give you some support. It's important that you know, many children would not have chosen to go to college for mathematics even if they'd fine to Publix school. Some kids naturally have a very hard time learning to read and it's not the parents fault nor yours. Public schools may not have helped at all in that regard. I think that what you didn't lose is your desire and love of learning despite the difficulties you had and that's a big pro for having been homeschooled and homeschooling. I think your outcome seems positive coming from a public school graduate.
I think you turned out amazing considering that you ended up majoring in math. A lot of students struggle in that subject and unfortunately girls tend to stray away from the math and sciences. Teachers often make things more difficult to understand when you’re already confused and students tend to get referred to special Ed support when they’re weak in certain subjects, specifically reading.
My point is, you think the public schools would have helped strengthen your performance when in reality, teachers are overwhelmed and have little time to give attention to struggling students when they’re managing four to five classes of 22 to 30 students or more. Even the special ed teachers many times aren’t providing the support that will allow you to catch up to your peers. I know all of this firsthand working in the school setting.
You passed your GED which is also an accomplishment because I’ve heard a lot of people report that studying for that test is more challenging than the work they’ve done in school. It’s normal to be weaker in certain areas than others. Math has usually been difficult for me and I’ve probably had 1 math teacher in my entire k-12 experience who made it easy to understand. Only when my brother tutored me did I actually get it.
I was homeschool all the way up and I am so greatful for it now. Like you here just one teacher for the majority of my classes was hard. We were part of a co-op and so a couple of my classes were taught by other moms but I remember watching my Mom struggle trying to remember the concepts and help us understand especially with math. I felt the same as you as with Friends probably a good 90% of my friends for part a public school and some of them weren't so nice about me being homeschooled and getting those negative comments but overall it was fine and now that I look back it was a blessing, and that is why I have chosen to homeschool my little ones.
Sad. I teach. You are one of ones that should realize that public education can do better than just a few Moms getting together and throwing crap together. For most kids, they become much poorer learners as homeschoolers, especially during the college years -- they are not adequate performers. I've written too much elsewhere tonight or I'd give you some examples.
From my own experience, I'm in a college setting and teaching, and most H-S kids don't perform as well as their peers and often do not finish my classes with a passing grade. Because they think classes should be easy, they should have input, they SHOULD GET A BETTER GRADE on this or that, etc., etc., etc. So, I'm quite glad when they fail out or drop, makes teaching the other kids much easier.
Yeah, in Science-based courses, they are clueless, not listening to how evolution works and trying to tell me that earth is 6000 years old. Bla, bla, bla. Real chore to teach them. But, they've never had to really learn what is true and proven by science. But, again, freedom of religion in America, so people can believe in any fantasy that they choose -- just like the Magic Man and Miracle Worker from Galillee.

This was great, Julie! I had the same experience with babysitting during high school when others couldn’t because of school. I remember starting around 14 and being able to have the flexibility to babysit during the day if needed, that was so nice! A pro for our family was we got to travel a lot too. My dad traveled a lot for work when we were younger and so by the time I was a senior in high school, we had been to 38 states and Canada a couple times too. That was really neat! :)
+Joyful Mothering Oh neat!! We didn't travel much, but I agree, that's totally a pro!! Maybe I'll include that in my pros and cons to homeschooling, because we've done that a bit with our kids! 😊
Thank you for sharing! I'm hoping to homeschool my little gal if it still feels right for her when she is school age. I was not homeschooled so I've always been interested in hearing from adults who were homeschooled and if they are glad they were homeschooled. I appreciate you sharing your experience!

Hello, I am a new subscriber and homeschooling parent. I was also homeschooled for most of my elementary school year and all of my high school year.
I am glad you did this video, this was nice to hear from a seasoned homeschool student! And yes, now a days the thought of being homeschooled is more normal then it was when you started for sure. i was homeschooled in high school after my freshman year, so I had an interesting experience. Like, I said before I filmed it and i went on rabbit trails..might do it again...lol. thanks so much for sharing the pros and cons, this video will help many looking into homeschooling!

I love this! Con #1 We definitely depend on other resources and online videos. I'm thankful for co-op teachers too! My son has learned to appreciate me because he sees how some other teachers are more strict at co-op! LOL! Con#2 In five years we've thankfully only had one comment (that made no sense) about our son being homeschooled. Now I just say things like "early dismissal" or "teacher's inservice." I mean, after all, it's true! Con#3 Still working on it! My son has such an intense personality that relationships are hard for him.
I enjoyed and agree with these things -- well, from my point of view as someone who attended public school only. We're now in our 5th year of home education.
I'm so grateful for these opinions of people that have actually I'd only been home schools but also homeschool themselves my family is overall supportive but definitely have their criticisms of me homeschooling my daughter and my two best friends are both teachers and one of them is very supportive and the other one is extremely negative and always makes me feel like I have to defend or explain myself in regards to my homeschooling I think she takes it as a slight

Me! I was homeschooled from 7th grade on, but my sisters were 4th and 1st when we started. I would agree with just about everything you said here but a lot of the things that were problems back then (again, 20+ years ago) aren't issues anymore. I played on the very first homeschool volleyball team in Texas and we played private schools. Maybe I should do this video too! Would you mind?

I love having all the different online resources to either help my kids directly, or help me to teach them a particular subject better. I have recently done a self-directed workshop on teaching the writing process, and writing paragraphs and essays to help two of my kids, using you-tube videos.

I was homeschooled. I was also the prairie chick that would ride her bike for a paper route in her long dress and sometimes prairie bonnet (cause hat is what I loved!) and be made fun of. Made I also have some amazing memories. I actually just did a video on this, sharing my life as a homeschooled kid
I think Elizabeth from Beautiful Journey was also homeschooled. Oh and Maureen (sp?) from Glitter and Groceries was homeschooled.

A few things I have noticed, controlling parents, usually religious and usually conservative, home school a a means of control. Home school kids tend to be well educated in English and the history, but poorly educated in math and science. The average mom would have no problem teaching English, but calculus, chemistry, and physics are a lot harder to conceptualize.
Did you see the video that Blimey Cow did about a week ago, about when homeschoolers grow up? It cracked me up, even though it was cheesey. I feel the same way about a lot of these. My church had a pretty high number of home-schoolers, and actually was an umbrella for a while, so as far as that goes I felt pretty normal. I did have this one lady at a library start asking me math questions when she found out I was homeschooled. I do get frustrated when people feel the need to make you prove yourself. 🙄 But like you, the pros outweighed the cons when I decided how to educate my own kiddos. 😊
+A Beautiful Horizon LOL no I didn't, but I bet it was funny! 😝 Exactly! I remember people asking me to read for them, or tell them what I've learned etc, as if I'm just sitting at home not learning a thing. Or as if only qualified teachers can teach someone how to read 🙄
I was homeschooled from kindergarten to ninth grade and personally I'm glad I made the switch. A lot more friends and social exposure I didn't get at home.
so is the only thing you liked about public school was more interaction with kids ?
@@christinamarin4875 pretty much, homework after schools sucks and being at school for 7 hours sucks too. Tight schedules and annoying teachers and rules suck too.
I’m worried for de violence in B&M school, What you think about homeschool and a lot extracurricular like dance, STEAM and music class or sport? I appreciate your point TIA
@@marianaromero8205 I'm not a parent so I'm probably not the best source for this kind of advice, but I'll try to give it my best shot. If you can support those activities for your kids then go for it. I feel like the violence you're worried about depends on your area. My school hardly had any fights, but if the schools in your area are more prone to that then that's up to your own judgment. I would say as long as your kids have friends and social outlets to do the things that kids do, everyone should be fine.
I went to 5 differnt highschools not military family just moved alot their were times i wish i was homeschooled :)
I was homeschooled all the way. Pros were getting done early in the day, graduating at 16, and being able to read most of my subjects. Cons would be that I feel like I lacked teaching in some areas, which I could always learn now, and also feeling kinda secluded. Would I homeschool? I think so.
+The Babcocks Oh nice! It's neat to find others through this who were homeschooled. 😊 I agree, secluded could be a good word. I'm putting our kids in many extracurricular activities, a homeschool group, etc...hoping that they'll still feel very a part of things. 😊

Yes I do. I put my oldest in school for a while. I recommend homeschooling but I know that everyone has different circumstances and must do what’s best for them and their children.

I was never homeschooled because that was not possible in Mexico. But I did live in the US for many years and I met a lot of people which were being homeschooled. I thought it was awesome, at least for me because English was not my first language, so all of the clases with different teachers were very hard for me, and I wished I could have only one teacher that would understand my situation.
Now, due to the pandemic, more than half of Mexico’s children will be “homeschooled”, the sad parts about this, is that most of the parents couldn’t even finish elementary school ; and the parents are the ones teaching these kids

Say that it’s not normal to homeschool in 2020
I think homeschooling should be the norm.
In the British school system influential and rich people can attack the children of their unfriends by contacting the unfriends' children's schools to mess them up. That is what happened to me at both prep school and at public school. A different enemy contacted my university and half-succeeded in messing me up royally there. Homeschooling would have been much SAFER for parents with personal enemies. There are staff in schools and they are human beings. It is only human to want money and grace & favor from important people. The sufferer is the wretched child and its bewildered parents. In my case I only discovered the identities of the villains much later in life when it was safe for them to crow. Homeschool for CHILD SAFETY! :)
I've never met a person whose been homeschooled, I always assumed they were quiet and shy. My takeaway from this video is that while although public school has there cons, I've come to the realization that those ppl are better at dealing with real world situations such as bullies, socializing and any other adversity in general.
