    Last week I cleared 1.6 TB of cache, yes, with a "T", and my drive is 2 TB so I almost maxed oud. Nice to see reminders like that

    Love that you take care of us with each new version! We notice that while other content creators are climbing all over each other to be the first to publish new features-even before the official release, you're the guy watching out for how to keep Resolve purring along. Thank you❗Really. THANK YOU❗

    DNxHR LB (Low Bandwidth, intended for proxies) 8-bit, 4:2:2 , 22:1 ~4.5MB/s at 1080p25
    DNxHR SQ (Standard Quality) 8-bit, 4:2:2, 7:1, ~14.5MB/s at 1080p25
    DNxHR HQ (High Quality) 8-bit, 4:2:2, 4.5:1, ~21.5MB/s at 1080p25
    DNxHR HQX (High Quality, high bit depth) 10 or 12-bit but most often 10-bit, 4:2:2, 5.5:1, ~21.5MB/s at 1080p25
    DNxHR 444 (RGB) 12-bit, 4:4:4, 4.5:1, ~43.5MB/s at 1080p25
    Avid's DNxHR codec family is roughly analogous to Apple's Prores Proxy, Prores LB, Prores 422, Prores 422 HQ, Prores 4444.
    The predecessor, DNxHD, was HD only and the HR family was redesigned to be resolution independent as we transitioned to >HD material.

      Excellent breakdown. Thank you! Logically, then, the compression requires some amount of cpu power. So I suspect "Uncompressed 10-bit" is the default because it keeps Resolve snappy (at the cost of disk space).

    • @tyesamson
      @tyesamson 6 місяців тому +1

      @@tib-c9265 Like Prores, DNxHR are very efficient intraframe codecs. The CPU hit would be so negligible as to be meaningless.

    I leave my render cache set to uncompressed because when outputting, I have DR set to use render cache for output which can offer a significantly faster output instead of having to rerender everything on output. I do have a large M.2 cache drive.

    Should be noted that if you are a person that still uses Optimized media, ( by right clicking the media and telling Resolve to create it), that Resolve creates that media in the render cache folder - and it uses database friendly ( but extremely not user friendly ) file names - using numbers.
    Although I believe that Resolve is phasing out Optimized media, It takes up massive amounts of physical space on a storage drive where the render cache is stored. To which if you fill up - you will suddenly get the dreaded "media offline" screens on your timeline.
    Also Patrick, I think you can verify your conclusions about the codec by looking at the render cache size, but it needs to be controlled where you delete all cache - set the codec - then turn on the render cache to User and select the same clip ( or clips ) on the timeline and force a render.
    Because just checking the render without those steps - the size can be related to the size of what is rendered. So it has to be the same for each version to check later.
    Also other things when updating to a new version resaves, so the first time opening the new version it will take longer to completely load - so first run always seems slower. This has been the case for all updates over the years.

    • @PatrickStirling
      @PatrickStirling  6 місяців тому +1

      Oh wow i hadn't thought about Optimized Media saving to you that folder! Thanks so much for pointing that out. It does feel like optimized media has sat at an interesting point for a while since they've also to Proxies in there now.
      My render cache tests were using the same length clip on timelines of the same resolution and I cleared the cache for each individual folders a few times and let it cache to try to verify. But those sort of technical benchmarks are absolutely not my forte so I didn't want to come out too strong with my claims.

  • @Relativizor
    @Relativizor 6 місяців тому +2

    If you think it's a bug, a way to check is to open the produced .dvcc files in a (hex) editor. The first few bytes will contain a tag of the codec. For instance dnxhr_sq. This can be used to check if the setting isn't going through appropriately. I.e., it's using something wrong for e.g., dnxhr_lb.

    When I use smart render it does everything on the timeline and for a 30+ min video that cache is huge. How do you just use render on one clip and not the others? Or is that not possible?

    • @PatrickStirling
      @PatrickStirling  6 місяців тому +3

      you have a lot more control over the User cache setting and in that same cache area of the project settings you can turn off auto-caching most things and by right clicking on individual clips you can cache fusion effects or color grades

    It’s a real pity one cannot set a limit on used drive space. Especially as SSD do not like being filled to 100%. Doing so can result in sudden SSD death- or substantive drive slowdown to as little as 30MB/s (I have seen this on Apple internal SSD -not easy to recover from at all! A real problem on a $4000 Mac where an editor has not set an external cache drive. Poorly managed cache files could really ruin a users day in a very expensive fashion.
    Even if BMD merely set a resolve warning and a system notification that automatically warns users that their cache drive was becoming full, and provided advice and options to manage cache data more effectively.
    Lots of new NLE users out there could benefit from such warnings, because now that Resolve is popular in the wild outside Post houses with skilled IT support, it is important to consider the needs of lowest common denominators.

      This is what happened to my Samsung Evo 970 just now. Yesterday davinci was set to "Smart" render cache and filled my SSD after that i had a lot of issues and had to delete the cache then windows explorer had issues due to that. Now the thing is my SSD is fine but since there is no Limit to the cache size i'm not using it anymore, such a bummer I would just limit it to 100gb or something, It took up 400+GB for a single 10gb video.

    Good info, thanks! But I have a question: sometimes I'm applying some effects for example "Analog TV" and I waiting for cache generation but even though it's still hard to play or this applied effect look like shit. What's the problem here? (BTW, I'm using M3 Max Macbook Pro)

    • @PatrickStirling
      @PatrickStirling  6 місяців тому +1

      if an effect is fully cached my first guess would be something life hard drive speed if it can't read the files it's read in real time. There's also some instances like when you're using Adjustment clips where the footage underneath it might cache and show the blue bar buy the actually heavy effect isn't part of that cache. occasionally cache has weird interactions with proxy mode as well

  • @mihalydozsa2254
    @mihalydozsa2254 6 місяців тому

    It is smaller, but which is the fastest? Because if i just want small i don't turn it on. It is maybe faster to watch it as a slideshow tht waiting minutes every time I change something. Because it is recomputing everything even is I just changed something at the end of the clip. For me atleast..

    I have admittedly a bad workflow... I edit when I have time and in-between I leave DR (19 Beta 2) and when I do so with the "Smart" cache setting applied, my 4TB NVMe drive will completely fill with cache files. It takes hours for it to occur, but it will literally fill the entire drive and it really doesn't seem to matter what the project it.
    The problem is I must really not have my system configured well for optimum performance because I have an Intel i9-12900K, 64GB of DDR5, 2TB Boot NVMe PCI4, 4TB NVMe Cache & Render PCI4 and a 4070TI graphics card. That may not be the latest and greatest, but it should be sufficient to have near real-time playback on most things.

    • @PatrickStirling

      you might be able to! change your cache to User and possible toggle off more options in that project sections cache area so clips no longer automatically all cache and see if you still have real-time palyback

    Yay!!!
    Another video with a tip, a resource, a tool about the "ghost" version 19 that has just had an insignificant update (update 2) and has no deadline for its release...
    Well, only the fanatics and UA-camrs who are paying attention to this version, because the professional editors and finishers and producers are not even paying attention to this new version for now!
    Unnecessary teachings, just to attract attention, gain views, comments, likes and attempts to boost the channels
    Is version 18.6.6 dead? Because almost no one talks about it anymore, teaches something using it... Sadly, there wasn't even a public burial.
    Of course, hold that naughty DISLIKE

      @@PatrickStirling The Title of your call is "An Important Render Cache PSA! - DaVinci Resolve 19" so I don't see how two sentences in this video are even tangentially related to Resolve 19 as you say in your message. Refer to being directly yourself.
      But honestly, I really admire you, your talent, your channel, everything you teach... but it's a bit boring now, all the big channels only talk about this version, which is just beta and we know the history of black magic in relation to to beta versions, final version and time.
      No one who has to do work will actually download and use this version to work... just crazy... even because it's full of bugs...
      I just wish they would talk and teach again as they did in relation to the current version and eventually talk about important things about the upcoming version... but just talking about this "ghost" version is discouraging
      Even with the respect and admiration for you, your channel, your work here...
      There is a good side to this, the smaller channels about davinci are appearing more, gaining more fame, because they are smaller but many have quality content and are having the opportunity to appear and gain a good share of subscribers... that's just because they continue speaking, teaching the current and only version of Davinci so far... 18.6.6
      It's just more of a rant and of course, a non-agreement with this and it's logical that every opinion that has a basis must be given and has its value... that's just it.
      Furthermore, I am very grateful for the things I learned and continue to learn from you and all the channels I participate in.
