    Davinci Resolve suddenly stopped rendering my projects 5 days ago. After watching other UA-cam videos, I suspected it was because my special effects and add-ons froze the program. Other videos advised to render the videos in place and make sure the "red lines turned into blue" before proceeding with the render. I did not see that on my end and could not figure out how to set that up - until I watched this video and learned I have to select "Playback >> Render Cache >> Smart" ... and now I FINALLY see what I'm supposed to see! And after it all rendered in place, it finally worked! Something so minor, but I'm still learning this software! Thank you for this! ☺👏

    This is an especially important setting to be aware of. We have an internal 2 TB SSD (Samsung) dedicated to caching only, and it would fill up very quickly when we edited one-hour documentaries. A hard disk that is set for the cache and has reached its capacity (meaning it is full) will result in many playback issues with the dreaded red no-media clip warnings. So, indeed, regularly monitor how much space you have left for caching, as DR will not warn you of a full disk. Thanks for sharing the video.

    You are Absolutely Right! The average, Hell even the advanced Professional UA-camr doesn't need Uncompressed 10-bit files.. But try not to use a high level compression CODEC for these. That will slow down your editing performance. there's a reason you want light or no compression... Thanks for the Heads Up!

    I had this problem after the first completely new project this year (without starting from a preset), it was set to 10 bit uncompressed and playback of render cache was slower and more jerky than without render cache. It took me a few days until i found this setting. I first thought the whole rendering was somehow bugged in the new version until i found out about this setting in some forum.
    I don't understand why this is on 10 bit uncompressed by default. Not even my (pretty high end) system could handle that (in 4K).

Do not use LB unless you have to. SQ and HQ are both the same heavy for CPU. HQX is more CPU heavy. You can also use GoPro Cineform which is even more CPU hungry, but has constant quality, not constant bitrate.

    • @mariuswickli3206
      @mariuswickli3206 Рік тому

      Why is it important to work with 12-bits when cacheing? When you are working/updating the Colorgrade the Cache shouldn’t be used anymore until you go back to editing and create another cache right? and for Editing Playback the 8 bit should be enough. I would be interested to get your opinion on that. cheers mate

    • @KarolMurawski
      @KarolMurawski Рік тому +4

      @@mariuswickli3206 Correct - you can use 8-bit cache for editing. For color grading it may be risky. Every node in a chain can be cached, so to prevent clipping more bits should be used. Also if you have source video that is 10-bit, you need at least 10-bit cache, but consider 12-bit to prevent clipping in node chain. And in Resolve you do not have separate caches for editing and color grading and if you need cache for editing, you may need cache for color grading, too.

That "Render cache format" on DDNxHR SQ solved it wow😮 . Also I would mention that I had to set Timeline Proxy Resolution to Full*, otherwise it wouldn't make a difference ❤. Amazing amazing amazing - this bottleneck is so silly 😢 thank you for the education.

    This super helpful. Just to add clearing out that cache folder every so often is key along with these settings. If you don't you may run into an error that will say "critical error" and won't allow you to make changes to projects while open and will repeatedly happen if you have backup saves on a frequent timer. It's essentially a warning saying you may have run out of space (ask me how i know LOL). The error doesn't really make it clear that this is the cause but every few months if i'm not clearing out that cache folder I run into it. Anyways Love the content and plugins!!

    I don’t use the cache at all.. anything that struggles, I just render in place. If I change video size, I will change the size then render out the video and bring in the rendered version that will run smooth. When you change resolution of a video to your project settings, it might lag unless you render it out first. The cache just causes all kinds of problems from black screens or whatever, ever since 18 came out. Hasn’t been fixed yet, far as I know.

    unfortunately the render cache is ignored when you switch playback resolution to anything else than full. This makes fast effect based editing and especially previewing without constantly rendering the cache in full resolution for all clips you want to preview impossible. We're using the latest 18.5. beta 2 version and have not found any workflow solution for this at the moment. The support could not help us either, which is really unfortunate, since this is a major flaw in DaVinci and makes it impossible for us to use it for our projects.

    Hi, I applied this (changing Uncompressed 10-Bit) and it worked. However, it seems the red dashes return every morning when I re-open the project in which I have to wait for it to finish (15 minutes) Is this the way it is? or is there an additional trick? Please advise, thank you

      Hmm that does seem weird. It you don't change anything after saving and don't delete the cache files it shouldn't need to re-render them...

    How would changing the cache to DNX affect color grading? I imagine it would cause artifacts that could affect your grading process

    Is it okay to edit my 4K footage in a 1080p timeline? edit and grading that way and then change the timeline resolution to 4K for export when im done? My computer can handle editing in 1080p without proxies.

    You didn't mention that the render cache should be on it's own separate drive for the best performance. In fact, everything should be on separate drives . . . OS... READ MEDIA FROM... RENDER TO... CACHE.

    Videos like this constantly say they've got a good computer. But we're never told what you have. So what are you using. Include memory, processor, graphic card including graphic memory on the card, and the type of drives you have. Also, which version of DaVinci and if it's studio or the free version. Any one of those things can make a difference in what you're doing.
    I was just on another website that said you should have different drives for your cache, project and so forth. I have no idea if it does or not. All of yours are on your C drive.
