Nice video. One tip about fitting the new bearing, if it is too tight to tap in easily. You could stick the new bearing in the freezer for an hour or so and it will most likely slide right in.
Changed out my clutch today. looked at this video a couple of times before i did it. I'm no mechanic at all. the hardest part was the snap ring. thanks!
I started to get an intermittent noise on my 2006 tundra compressor. Thanks to your video, I will be tackling it tomorrow. There are too many guys who have videos where they say, "_____ has to be removed." The next thing you see is the part removed. They do the same with re-assembly. I already know what has to be removed. I need to see how to do it. Thanks for the step-by-step detail.
Thanks for the video. Just want to mention: when installing the new pully bearing, add some locktite to the outer surface of the new bearing before installing it into the pully. Also, if you take notice of the small tabs that help lock the old bearing in place, make sure to redent the tabs after the new bearing is installed. This way the pully wont walk off the new bearing. This happened to me after I installed a new pully bearing. Just wanted to make mention. Thanks..
@@myRatchets .. hey boss I got a f150 Triton V8 2002 .the crank sensor is right beside of it and I need to change it can I just loosen it up some just so I can get the sensor out then there's four bolts holding the air compressor on right
this is one of the greatest videos i haven watch Ratchets and Wrenches, he is so good very professional and explicit, i have a noise on my ac compressor clutch, my car is a 08 vw gti and the whole compressor is so expense is almost$600 bucks on the dealer, so i gonna try just replacing the clutch hope the problem get fix, thanks again for your help
Superb!!! Best how to video I've seen with the extras like tools needed, autozone loaner tool number, torque specs etc... the only thing that would make it better would be you two helping me change mine. Great video! I just subscribed, keep up the good work! Appreciate your brightness!!!
Great and helpful video - replacing the AC clutch assembly on my 04 Taurus DOHC, pulley seized sideways against the housing and burned a belt. You helped point me in the right direction for everything I needed. Heading out to jack it up, fingers crossed lol
First I want to say the video you made or replacing the upper and lower intake manifolds on the Monte Carlo was great. I followed your steps and I've replaced my upper and lower intake manifold on my 2000 MC SS with ease. It now runs very quiet. Now I am hearing a knocking sound when my AC is turned on. After watching this video I feel I can make the replacement with ease. As long as the steps remain the same as described on this ford.
Thanks for sharing. Great video, I liked the part with the mirror and the recording is excellent - you can see everything. The explanations and commenting of each of your working steps are very helpful as well. A big thank you!
Great job! I did a vid of this repair in a dodge ram -- very similar difficult points. The hardest for me was finding parts. One thing people should know is that the splines on the pulley may not be symmetrical, so there is only one way for the pulley to go on in some vehicles.
I got this same problem with my 04 mustang GT automatic dark shadow gray and the mechanics want 1000 dollars so with this video I will do it myself Great video man keep them coming
I'm really impressed that your pulley didnt bend after those hard hammer hits , today I rewind the coil ando change the bearing my pulley bent a little ,hope no future problems
Thanks for the video from Oklahoma! Like the included info of the clutch operation and other info. I feel much more confident to get this done and what to look for. Have a great day!
+Chuck Cummings Sounds like your compressor locked up, if you cant turn the clutch by hand than you'll need to replace the compressor, condensor and receiver/drier on your car look in my channel for those videos. gl
+RatchetsAnd Wrenches Yes, crawled under car, and found that yes, the clutch does Not turn, so I will be switching-out the whole AC unit. Thank You, for that insight.
+RatchetsAnd Wrenches No need to change the condensor as you can easily flush out the system as if the compressor is locked up, it would have black oil in the system in which you would have to flush out the system. No need to replace anything but the compressor and drier
The way I get new bearings in is by putting the bearing in the freezer and the pulley in the oven, pull them both out and the new bearing will drop right in.
+Car Nut thanks for the added info, that's what these reply's or for, 2 questions though, 1) what tempter do you set the oven on? and 2) how long do you leave the parts in the oven and freezer?
Thank you so much. This helped me figure out the problem and a strategy to fix my 2000 Ford Taurus V6 3.0 L DOHC. I will try and post a video when I work on it. Thanks a bunch again.
Awesome bro! Part of my research project for my 2000 GT. Didn't know about the space/spec between the pulley and the clutch. It isn't even mentioned in my Chiltons.
Thanks My ranger is having some issues and this video helps quite a bit. I took the pulley off and the bearing in it was toast. The inner race and balls fell out. The outer race wouldn't press out like yours because on the back side there were some little tabs that prevent the bearing from being pressed out. I could have ground them off and pressed it out, but decided to go for a new pulley
Hi Shane, wondering if after replacing yours if the sound went away. I just spent the last 3 wks dealing with the compressor issues on my 09 ranger. Ive already reinstalled a new clutch coil, new pully, and and new clutch but still have a slight grinding noise like the pulley is scraping against the plastic electrical connector on the clutch coil. Does your spin totally free?
To clarify this video. Your problem was a bad clutch not a bearing. I agree it was worthwhile to replade the bearing anyway. My truck makes noise when I turn the AC on, and no noise when it off. Yours is just the opposite because the clutch rubbed. So, is it reasonable to deduce that a noise with the AC on would be the bearing (because of the load)?
It's worthwhile to replace the entire set, to include the pulley with bearing and clutch. Both the pulley and clutch faces were worn beyond repair and should have been replaced.
Thanks for this great video. I have a very noisey air con clutch/pulley problem which I didnt have a clue how to resolve. Can definitely sort this out myself now!
OH MY GOD THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!!! Mine started to knock and my clutch is catching, but the whole AC compressor assembly is like $200. At least now I can test these two first to see if that is the issue. I replaced my tensioner assembly and fuel pump a few months back, its a pain to CONSTANTLY be under my hood over my whole serpentine assembly, but now I can check all of my pulley's to make sure they're good! Could the hammer+socket work for a wheel bearing as well?
Your video is going to help me alot in the next few days. I recently started hearing a squealing noise coming from my 2005 jeep liberty. We are certain it is a bad ac clutch bearing. We have purchased a new clutch assembly and plan on putting it on ourselves thanks to you video. I do have a question, what kond of cleaner did you spray on the coil before putting on the new parts?
If you're hearing pulley noise and you can't tell which one put a stethascope on and put the diaphragm on each belt driven part. The part making the noise will be magnified through the stethascope. The other parts will not be very loud with scope on. Process of elimination. Also you mentioned the ac compressor only engages when you turn ac on. A lot of modern vehicles use ac compressor for the window defroster as well. Because compressed air clears the windows faster.
nice video, thanks for the info. next time though if you put the bearing in the freezer the day before and get it nice and frozen it will press easier.
Better yet, toss that slap worn out pulley and clutch plate and just put new parts in. Way easier, and both of those parts were terribly worn beyond service limits. If the bearing is worn bad enough to need replacement, the face of the pulley is probably also shot like the one in the video.
I know I'm a few years late. But thank you. I was worried I had the wrong clutch. As the new one doesn't have those huge rubber nobs. But everything else looks the same besides my bolt. The new on is a little larger than 8mm on the old one. Hope it all goes together well. Gotta love ford...
There are different designs that all work the same. One more reason to replace the clutch and pulley together. The ones in that video were worn way beyond serviceable limits. Not the best idea to stick a used clutch on a used pulley. They should be replaced as a set.
Those surfaces are supposed to be perfectly flat. The best route there is either to get the pulley from the donor of the clutch or to get a new kit. You could have problems with slippage mismatching like that. Just saying.
Exactly. With those grooves, he can't get even close to an accurate gap between the surfaces, also. I always recommend not messing with the bearing or individual parts, but just get a clutch kit and replace it all.
Hi, if the clutch is locked up, how would I know if I need to replace the clutch or the compressor? Or both... I can't rotate the clutch (car off, ac off), pressure was too high in the low side and don't know if it messed up the compressor. On good system, if the ac is off, can you rotate the clutch by hand? It's fixed to the shaft of the compressor like you mentioned. Btw, great video and thanks for explaining how the clutch itself works, I found it really valuable.
Fernando Ibarrola yes, if you cant move the clutch by hand your compressor is seized and needs to be replaced along with your condensor and drier. search my channel for video's on how to do these. gl
Thank you for sharing all your knowledge with us. I Have a 2001 Seat Leon and the AC is not working at all. When it received a refrigerant gas charge, it was working fine for about 10 minutes and then it just stopped working, So we have removed the gas to check for any obstructions on the AC line and put in new gas. It worked for about 15 minutes and stopped working just like the first time. The AC clutch makes a noise just like the one in this video, So I removed the clutch and it definitely looks like it needs a replacement, however, I wanted to be sure it's just a clutch problem, so I used a rubber ring to lock the clutch together and make sure the compressor was spinning, but still the AC is not working. Any ideas on what to try next? maybe a bad compressor? thank you in advance!
You know what's the same size as the new bearing and doesn't matter if you hammer on it? The old bearing. Also, spinning the pulley has no effect while removing it from the compressor as you need to remove the center race (fixed), not the outer race (spins). You need to work it from different angles whenever possible. thanks for the video though
hi.. i would like to know while manually rotating the clutch, does the compressor shaft also rotates or the compressor shaft only rotates when clutch is engaged
I have a 2001 ford ranger 3.0 v6. is replacing of the clutch and bering on the compressor a symptom of high rpms when the compressor is engaged? I get about 1400-1500 rpms when the clutch engages and if you press on the gas pedal the rpms stay at 1400 to 1500.
Hi, good job as always! Question? So definitely I got to measure that space? between the clutch and the pulley? what happened if you don't measure! thanks, thumbs up!!
You make look easy! Would you please let me know if it's possible to do the same for a 2006 ML500. The pulley on the AC compressor is broken and I don't necessarily want to take out the compressor to change the pulley. Thanks for you help
Awesome vid! I'm doing the same repair on a '05 chevy malibu maxx. I hear the same metal to metal noise when idling and there IS play in the pulley side to side. Also, when the AC is on, don't hear the compressor turn on and the air is not cold. Tested pressure of low pressure line and it's 110 psi! Do you think its the clutch or the entire compressor?
Thank you Sir, I'd love to get further details on 4wd operation using the manual hub lock systems, example what happens inside when you lock the hubs, but don't engage 4wd and vice versa.
I know it a while since this video, but i was wondering, if i never use or intend to use my aircon, could i leave the front off the clutch assembly and would the pully stay in place with the snap ring? Thanks
Air conditioning re- gassed but cooling and was blowing warm air. I checked for leaks at home with dishwasher liquid into water and pour the water on TX valve and found the leaks When I changed the TX valve O ring but air is still coming out. Is it evaporator, O ring or the pip has hold on it under the dash. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

I have the same exact problem on my 2008 Hyundai Elantra. It makes a terrible noise with the ac off and the noise stops when I turn the ac on. My question is is if just the clutch and bearing is bad should my ac still blow cold air ?
Nice video. One tip about fitting the new bearing, if it is too tight to tap in easily. You could stick the new bearing in the freezer for an hour or so and it will most likely slide right in.

Thanks great video work great on my 1997 f150. greetings from Texas
Great video !! I have question my bearing seized pulley is gone how can I remove bearing coil is in the way cant get coil retainer clip thanks
hi.. i would like to know while manually rotating the clutch, does the
compressor shaft also rotates or the compressor shaft only rotates when
clutch is engaged
One question when adjusting the rap on the clutch what was the gap range ?
Great informative video. Thanks.
would this cause the a/c tensioner to bounce around alot? also would it cause rpm dips/surges when coming to a complete stop when a/c is on?
I have a 2001 ford ranger 3.0 v6. is replacing of the clutch and bering on the compressor a symptom of high rpms when the compressor is engaged? I get about 1400-1500 rpms when the clutch engages and if you press on the gas pedal the rpms stay at 1400 to 1500.
How do you take the coil off?
Usually three small screws hold it to the compressor housing.
Can you run the clutch without a spacer to get the outer plate close enough?
very good explanation. great video. helped a lot. thanks.
very good, its very clear explanation
Excellent video broski! Thanks very much. Very helpful!
