    How GPS Receivers Work

    “Fundamentally, three-dimensional trilateration isn't much different from two-dimensional trilateration, but it's a little trickier to visualize. Imagine the radii from the previous examples going off in all directions. So instead of a series of circles, you get a series of spheres.”
    Real-World Relativity: The GPS Navigation System
    www.astronomy.ohio-state.edu/~...
    “The current GPS configuration consists of a network of 24 satellites in high orbits around the Earth. Each satellite in the GPS constellation orbits at an altitude of about 20,000 km from the ground, and has an orbital speed of about 14,000 km/hour (the orbital period is roughly 12 hours - contrary to popular belief, GPS satellites are not in geosynchronous or geostationary orbits).”

      They are usually super religious and believe the earth is in-cased in a 'glass dome' that nothing can penetrate..

      Lasse Øksbro Want to see a satellite? Go outside at night and look at the sky. In less than 5 minutes you'll see what looks like a small star moving across the sky. It will appear faster than a plane and will be much higher. This is a satellite.
      The largest and easiest satellite to see is the ISS. It orbits the earth every 90mins, which is over 17,000 miles per hour (27,500kmh).
      Can you name me one plane, missile, or bullet that can travel 17,000mph INSIDE earths atmosphere and never land to refuel?
      Do you want to see the ISS but dont want to stare aimlessly at the sky? Here is a link to the ISS tracker. You can see when its going to be over your house and then you can go out an confirm it with your own eyes: www.isstracker.com/
      any questions?

    you should also know that gps locations become less accurate in valleys or in any place where you have "walls" around you. This is because the satelites have "bad" geometry, because the satelites have to be close to each other. If you were on a flat surface, the further apart the satelites, the better the geometry, and the more accurate it is.

      Did you not watch the video? GPS doesn't work like that. GPS is all calculated and fracked locally on the phone/device itself. Now, someone can PROGRAM the operating system to send the location (calculated by your phone) to people over cellular/wifi signals, but that's a completed information. It's not the raw timing information from the satellites that's being sent.

    Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't the satalites clock tick at a slower pace, not faster? Traveling faster and faster - although no where near light speed -compresses objects outside our frame, slowing the clocks?

    GPS satellites can't track you but the intruder satellites can! Nice try air force! ;P
    I'm not entirely sure if I understood you correctly but I think you don't necessarily need 4 satellites for *tri* lateration. However, as you have mentioned the smartphone clock is pretty bad and to overcome this issue a forth satellite is needed. GPS does not use the smartphones own clock as far as I know but instead the time of the forth satellite as a reference so to speak (a little more complex than that though).

    • @Draemn
      @Draemn 8 років тому

      +KerbalEssences GPS uses the clock of the device (phone, etc) for time. The actual time of your clock (relative to the super precise nuclear clocks in the satellite) is an "unknown" variable along with your X, Y, Z location. You then have 4 unknowns, which requires 4 "observations" (satellites) to solve the equation for X,Y,Z as you also need to solve cdt (clock error). So the clock on your device is used, but the extra satellite allows your clock to be adjusted to match the satellite clocks.

  • @johnh3231
    @johnh3231 8 років тому

    you said it was the change of gravitational pull that makes a difference with the clocks at 5:20 but there very little change in gravity on the satellites but it's their speed that makes most of the difrence

    • @bobbyharper8710
      @bobbyharper8710 8 років тому +2

      +Meathew Chan Yes about 7 microseconds a day, but a prediction of General Relativity is that clocks closer to a massive object will seem to tick more slowly than those located further away. In the case of GPS satelites it's calculated at 45 microseconds a day.

    One question-
    The Gps system involves use of 24satellites positioned in orbit,allowing 3 to always be
    a)at right angles to deflect radio signal
    b)visible at night to ensure visibility in dark
    c)above the horizon to be used at any one time
    d)above or below the lowest object in sky
    Please say the right answer

I know "everybody" says it, but you know the old proverb about everybody jumping off a bridge. I mean, this is nice and all, but America is not the only country doing Satellites.
    How do the satellites fare for other countries like Japan and Russia?
    - Do the systems work pretty much identically?
    - Are there any cooperation in satellite control and shared usage?
    You said a lot about air force and American atom clock, but same "system" would also apply to other countries then?

      +Sam Abtahi We could. And it is possible to locate someone via their position relative to the closest 3 cell towers, but coverage as it is is not nearly complete enough. GPS has to work the world over. With satellites, that coverage is not a problem.
      And besides, the zoning paperwork is much less of a headache in space. You don't have to deal with people's houses and businesses getting in the way on the surface. And also, because towers aren't as high off the ground, you'd need millions of them total to cover the planet, in places where they could be very hard to build and consequently maintain. In space, we only need about 30.
      Our methods of getting things into space may be fairly inefficient, but it's much more consistent than having a tower on the surface.

    So we need to get atomic clock time from the satellite to the phone, but for that, we need to know the distance to said satellite, or else we can't tell how much to correct for the time delay that it took for the signal to get to the receiver, for which we would again need atomic clock time for the receiver. *Scratching my head
    I know it does some fancy math with all the data from all the four satellites, but can someone explain it in simple terms?

    Everything in this video seems ok, but I am not sure about the Satellites thing because I am a computer science major and we learned that we get time from a protocol called NT protocol which stands for network time protocol. And any such device connected tot the network will be automatically connected to it. If fact now your Windows or Linux systems are recieving the time from NT protocol. Even GPS use these protocol to get their accurate time. I am surprise that you have more than 3 M subscribers and no one is majoring computer science

    • @saudiprogrammer8587
      @saudiprogrammer8587 6 років тому

      J Calhoun No I am not. I actually know that internet is a large network that connect the world togeher using physical layers like cables and network layer like routers. For example, if i want to connect to a device in Paris and I am in US. I will actually send my packet throw my router which will route my packet to Paris. It wont be transfered from my router to Paris router immediatly, but instead it's going to be routed to multiple routers that on it's way to Paris. So at the end internet is just physical cables that connect you to the internet service provider and routers that made to router packets to any place you want.

    this caused a REAL problem for figuring out things.... especially for programmers
    then the solution which they used.. luckily it was recorded... was that they would just use the number of nano seconds as history itself... and use the point at 1980s when and where the counting started of the vibrations.... not by day or month or second as the the main count.. but the nanosecond SINCE the time the counting started.. and just program in the parameters for the region where daylight savings year are different in range etc...

      Was thinking the same question, but I'm guessing there's another clock that keep staying the same and that connects yo the satellite

      +MusicANDshit Hi, actually the smartphone clock is not used at all. *tri* lateration only requires three satellites for the exact position. However, the time of a forth satellite is taken as a reference to you bypass the inaccurate smartphone clock.

    Is it possible for two man-made satellites to collide and fall to the Earth?

    • @Vidar_Odinson
      @Vidar_Odinson 8 років тому +1

      They make sure to put satellites in slightly different altitude so that won't happen.

    • @rsher7369
      @rsher7369 8 років тому +1

      If that did happen (even though it's extremely unlikely) they wouldn't fall to earth, they would just float there

      +Dj Lee depends in which directions each satellite is going, most communication satellites go in prograde orbits, and different altitudes
