Today, it only takes one magical technology to get driving directions, send your picnic spot to a lost friend, or track how far you’ve gone during a workout. That technology is called GPS, and you’re about to find out the secret behind it.
Did you know that GPS was actually a military invention? The highest quality signals were only used for military purposes until May 2000, when it became available to all civilians for free. Now GPS is literally everywhere, and you can now even purchase GPS insoles to keep track of your kids or relatives with Alzheimer’s disease.

SUMMARY:
To put it simply, GPS is a system that has three basic parts: satellites, ground stations, and receivers.
Grounds stations use radars to find out if the satellites really are where they’re supposed to be.
The GPS system has 32 active satellites orbiting the Earth. 24 of them are core satellites, and the rest serve as emergency replacements when something happens to the others.
A receiver on Earth has to see at least 4 satellites to calculate an accurate location because the GPS uses a trilateration mechanism.
2-D trilateration is about calculating its latitude and longitude position on a map.
When it comes to 3-D trilateration, it’s basically the same, but there’ll be spheres instead of circles on your drawing. 3-D position includes your latitude, longitude, and altitude.
GPS satellites send information about their position and current time to a GPS receiver at certain intervals. The receiver gets the information in the form of a signal.
GPS satellites have atomic clocks that keep the most precise time, but it would be impossible to install these clocks in every receiver.
Satellites’ atomic clocks get 38 microseconds ahead of ground clocks every day. If scientists did nothing about it, GPS locations would be off by 6 miles more every day.
There’s also a GPS almanac in the receiver that keeps track of where this or that satellite should be at any moment.
GPS not only determines the most accurate location of people and objects, but also sends time signals that are accurate within 10 billionths of a second.
Even though it’s incredibly accurate and useful, sometimes GPS takes people to unexpected places, especially in rural areas.

Don't confuse bad mapping software for GPS issues. Misrouting people has nothing to do with GPS. It's all about the mapping software and the quality of the information stored in it.

Wanted to note that there is a difference between GPS and applications that utilise GPS. Assuming the GPS is not faulty, the application does know where you are, but might have problems using the information. If the application directs you to a wrong location or via a wrong way, it's not the fault of the GPS system itself. One example is here in Iceland where travellers input "Laugarvegur" into their application, wanting to go to a destination at "Laugavegur" in Reykjavík. The application directed the travellers to a destination far into the country, and the travellers didn't realise this misspelling until they passed Reykjavík and were also a few hundred kilometers past their desired destination.
Additional nerdy note: GPS is the name of the U.S. navy's system. GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is the general term for those systems. GPS is the everyday term used for such a system since the U.S. was first.
Actually the last couple of examples of picking the wrong routes were not due to GPS, but because of inaccurate/non-updated GIS (Geographic Information System) maps i.e. digital version of maps
Two things: First Navstar was not the first iteration of gps, a system called transit was then timation followed it then came Navstar. The second thing is it is NOT gps that tells you where to go, gps only tells you where it is when it is and time corrections. A gps receiver then calculates where you are in coordinates then a separate system takes the coordinates and overlays a map on it and runs a pathing algorithm to give directions. Nothing was wrong with gps in the cases where it “miss-lead” people.

GPS is a system. It’s made up of three parts: satellites, ground stations, and receivers.
Satellites act like the stars in constellations-we know where they are supposed to be at any given time.
The ground stations use radar to make sure they are actually where we think they are.
A receiver, like you might find in your phone or in your car, is persistently listening for a signal from these satellites. The receiver figures out how far away they are from some of them.
Once the receiver calculates its distance from four or more satellites, it knows exactly where you are.
GPS doesn't tell anyone to go anywhere, it just informs the application of current position. It's up to the mapping system to create routing information.

GPS is a brand name of a PNT system (Position, Navigation and Timing); Russia has GLONASS [insert Russian acronym meaning here....) which is used by some nations globally. China has Beidou; again global coverage; with limited users - but you may want to check your smart phone because I bet it tracks Beidou too. The European Union has Galileo with is globe coverage being used by most European nations as well as others. These four systems are also lumped together as GNSSs (Global Navigation Satellite Systems). India and Japan have regional systems; IRNSS and Quasi Zenith respectively. So not all the world navigates (or get lost on Swiss mountaintops) by 'GPS', but they all, more or less, work are described here - Trilateration.
President Ronald Reagan allowed the military to make GPS available to the public in 1983, and Bill Clinton in 2000 allowed the military to unscramble the signals to allow the GPS to function at their normal accuracy (something which was only accessible to the military). And that's when garmin started to sell handheld GPS receivers to the consumers for outdoor use/marine/aviation/car navigation.

All my Garmin GPSs never gave me my location until it locked on five, sometimes seven satellites.
2:41 Isn't the diagram here needlessly misleading? It's not the first time this clip has presented it this way, with a dotted line linking the device to one satellite and dotted lines linking that satellite to a chain of other satellites. That's... wrong, isn't it? The voice over is literally explaining that the device needs to be in contact with four or more satellites, so the dotted lines should all go from each satellite to the device, not to each other. It's kind of a shame... these fancy animations took work to make, but they're making it harder to understand GPS, not easier.

I use GPS almost everyday in my life.. I do likes traveling a lot and GPS brought me to a lot of amazing places..
I had a bunch of ‘amazing’ experiences (I don’t think this is bad experiences) using GPS, such crossing a river by my motorcycle, crossing very dark spooky forest in the middle of the night, crossing path way in the middle of rice paddy’s field, and many many more ‘crazy’ experiences that makes my adrenaline pumped. I can’t imagine how’s my life without GPS, maybe I just became a silly introvert kids who trapped in his home.

There can be a high chance of depending upon Military GPS but public GPS is not always accurate. The most accurate GPS is human being. 😊
If you ever want to go down a rabbit hole of cool tech. Think about submarines. They can't get a god signal below periscope depth. But they can sail around the world (hypothetically) and then surface and they will be within 10 meters of where they think they should be thanks to inertial navigation systems. Something I think is pretty cool but I am a big nerd
I was just reading about how difficult it is to determine height above sea level. Highly amazing. Depends on an accurate description of the shape of the Earth, atmospheric pressure, gravity, winds, tides, etc. Oh yea, check out the calculus formulas involved.

Well in countries like countries of south Asia people generally doesn't relay on GPS they generally don't go to places whose address or location they don't know. if they really want to know some location they will not search it on Google map

You can't get a 3-D fix on a GPS receiver. GPS fixes are always either 2-D or 4-D. The fourth dimension, of course, is time.
The venn diagram at 4:14 looks a little broken. Boseman does not fall within the circle around Salt Lake City. I might be misunderstanding the graph, but shouldn't the final result be in all three circles?

Back in the 90's an English program called Time Team used GPS to fix building positions. They said at a site revisit that their measurements were off by several metres because the GPS signal from the satellite was deliberately misaligned. I recall an answer was the Miltary didn't want an exact fix on anything.
ANYWAY. fast forward to the SpaceX boosters trying to land on the droneships and missing, when they can land perfectly OK at the Cape.
Wonder if someone is offsetting the GPS satellite signals ;P

Great video. Maybe be a little more precise about GPS and stories. Those stories of bad directions provided by a mapping provider and not GPS. GPS consists of the three segments (space, ground and receiver) mentioned earlier and not navigation.
