He will be long appreciated for the same reason Hank Williams is, he plays his heartand soul and sends it to the listener, not some jive-ass "demographic" or faker just in it for the money.
The man...the myth...the legend....Dwight Yoakam could sing the phone book as far as I am concerned. The crap that they are playing today on the radio is a joke. What a great song and done as only Dwight could do it.
+4girlsgramps I like some of the crap they're playing today - like My Fight Song - but Dwight is terrific. I gave my Mom one of his cds for Mother's Day and wound up getting a copy for myself. (It was the one with Turn it up on it.)
One of the most talented entertainers out there today! Country music is in a rapid decline, I hope it takes an upswing soon. Dwight has a great mix of country, folk, r&b, tex, and a unique voice that sets him far apart from anybody out there today. You cant really put a label on him, yet the influence of rockabilly, Buck Owens, Elvis, and even Roy Orbison can be heard Dwight is a fantastic entertainer.
This song has it all, the excellent poetry of Roger Miller combined with the artistic flair of Dwight Yoakam. The album it was featured on, "If There Was a Way" was the very first CD I bought, over thirty years ago. No regrets.
Dwight is just lighting it up on the road the last three or four years. Date after date, tune after tune, twist after twist .. the last real deal in country music who actually has something left in the tank. After Willie and Billy Joe go, he's just about the last stop. Go see him now.

I love the lyrics ...................................
The only time I feel the pain
Is in the sunshine or the rain
And I don't feel no hurt at all
Unless you count when teardrops fall
I tell the truth 'cept when I lie
It only hurts me when I cry
You couldn't tell it by the smile
That my recovery took awhile
I worked for days and nights on end
Just to walk and talk again
You can't believe the time it takes
To heal a heart once it breaks
The only time I feel the pain
Is in the sunshine or the rain
And I don't feel no hurt at all
Unless you count my teardrops fall
I tell the truth 'cept when I lie
It only hurts me when I cry
Oh maybe every now and then
I have a small heartache again
You wouldn't know when you look at me
There's tiny scars that you can't see
It was a struggle to survive
I'm probably lucky I'm alive
The only time I feel the pain
Is in the sunshine or the rain
And I don't feel no hurt at all
Unless you count when teardrops fall
I tell the truth 'cept when I lie
And it only hurts me when I cry
I tell the truth 'cept when I lie
And it only hurts me when I cry
Is in the sunshine and the rain..
