    I am so sorry to hear your pom baby, Roxy has this, glad the stent helped. My Papillon, Chloe's collapse was too deep in her chest so back in early 2000 they didn't do that surgery as it was not usually sucessful for toy dogs. We managed it with Nature's Way Sambucus cough syrup, seasonal antihistamines as her allergies made it worse, & occassionally a bronchiodialator, Theophylline which helped her get more oxygen in her lungs. She lived to almost 19 years for which I am most grateful!

    Last night my beloved Roxy was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. She's back at the Sage clinic who treated her collapsed trachea. She will stay over night for tests, more blood work, and to spend lots of time in an oxygen tent. Send some good vibes her way please.

    Whenever my Pom did this, I immediately put her in front of a large floor fan. The forced air/forced oxygen cleared up the problem and added some years to a life sadly cut short by acute diabetes. Her name was Sweetie and she lived 11.7 years.

    Hi there,
    My dog had the same problem, he was a maltese with a horrible collapsing trachea. He eventually was put to sleep because there was nothing else we could have done for him; he was old and it was just worsening. I'm glad to see that your dog is feeling much better.

    My Pomeranian had this when he was younger. We used the medicine called throat gold and after giving him very little he would stop doing this within a minute. It’s almost miraculous how well it works. Kinda pricey like $50 a bottle but worth every penny. We used it for several months now years later he doesn’t rarely ever do this anymore. It’s common for poms though, I think throat gold healed him.

    Thanks so much for posting this! I'm very familiar w/ reverse sneeze, but this totally helped distinguish between a collapse and the sneeze in a new dog we have. His sneeze sounded different from the ones I heard before, but nothing like this cough, thank goodness! I hope your Pom is doing great!

    My dog has a collapsed trachea as well. He was diagnosed at age 4. He's been on meds ever since with success. He's 10 now and doing well. He gets a collapsed a collapsed trachea elixer everyday 3x a day and we have a cough suppressant 1x a day but he can have it more if needed. He also takes half a tab of prednisone every other day. Been doing this for 5 years now. He's a 9lbs chihuahua. We discussed the tracheal stent but the vets advised me not to do it. I'm very curious how that surgery turned out for your pup. Please let me know as it will be my only other option when it collapses further. Thanks.

      When he starts coughing/wheezing... try holding him up with your 2 hands behind his front paws & put his face in front of a table fan. It stops mine from having an attack. The more they cough, the worse the trachea gets. Somehow the air helps them breathe.

    • @tonysolomon6622
      @tonysolomon6622 7 років тому

      My vet also advised blowing a quick puff of air into their face, the vet said it was related to the soft pallet collapsing and doing that helps the air passage re open.

    Hello,
    My baby Stewie is 3 years old and we adopted him about 3 months or so ago. He just recently started hacking and I wasn't sure what it was. Immediately, I took him to the vet and he was sure that he has a collapsing trachea. It saddens me very much to hear him cough like this throughout the day. There isn't much they could do because it's not a severe case so they prescribed him medication. Daily we must give him a cough suppressant and also antibiotic and another pill which I'm not to

      I was thinking about stent surgery as well. But after reading this, “OBJECTIVE To evaluate outcomes following endoluminal stent placement for treatment of tracheal collapse (TC) in dogs. DESIGN Retrospective case series with nested observational study. ANIMALS 75 dogs that underwent endoluminal placement of a self-expanding metallic stent to treat TC between September 2009 and August 2015. PROCEDURES Medical records were reviewed to collect data on dog characteristics, clinical signs, TC type, diagnostic test results, peri- and postoperative complications, and outcomes. Complication rates and survival times and rates were compared between various groups. RESULTS The 75 dogs received 119 stents (56% [42/75] received 1 stent and 44% [33/75] received ≥ 2 stents). Thirty-eight (51%) dogs had a malformation type of TC, and 37 (49%) had the traditional type. Ninety-three percent (70/75) of dogs survived to hospital discharge. Median survival time was 1,005 days. Improvement in goose-honking or raspy breathing (89% [42/47]) and dyspnea (84% [43/51]) was reported at final follow-up examination. Major complications requiring additional stent placement procedures occurred in 47% (33/70) of dogs over the follow-up period; stent fracture and tissue ingrowth were the most common types. Male dogs and younger dogs had a significantly longer survival time than other dogs. Mainstem bronchial collapse at the time of stent placement had no significant association with outcome. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Endoluminal stent placement provided a high survival rate for dogs with TC, even those with severe clinical signs. This information, as well as the information on potential complications, should be useful for advising owners of affected dogs,” I decided not too.

    Sounds and looks more like a reverse sneezing attack. It's very scary watching your dog go through that. I experienced this last night with my 7 month old shih tzu and have not stopped googling it since. I'm going to make a vet appointment bc if it's something other then reverse sneezing it could possibly get worse and I don't want that 😦

    Jodi hopefully you check this post again because I can't reply off my phone. I know that with the two stents (Roxy had granulation issues from the first stent so a second was needed to open the airway again) and all the medication along with check ups it's been over 10k for sure. However check with local vets on insurance and other forms of help to pay for the procedure. Roxy is doing great though! She pants a lot because of the prednisone though.

    My Chihuahua does this. I saw a video with a vet saying allergies can do this to dogs and I've heard a collapsed trachea. So not sure if he was saying that allergies "cause" a collapsed trachea? Does anyone know why this would happen? It seems to me, for my dog, if he gets excited....that is when I notice it happening "usually"...but it can happen anytime. So I really don't know. It usually passes. I try to keep him calm (or myself rather) and gently rub his neck. I don't know if it helps but at least he knows I know that something is going on with him. I worry so much when that happens but he has ALWAYS done this. He is 9 now.

We haven't had to use it yet since our pom doesn't cough this badly but just in case you may want to try it like I said my vet recommended it.

    Collapsing Trachea can be avoided if using a HARNESS on the dog instead of a collar, according to many vets. Especially small dog breeds should wear harnesses, because they are more at risk of developing Collapsing Trachea than large dog breeds.

    • @tonysolomon6622
      @tonysolomon6622 7 років тому +5

      Yes and no. We recently adopted a senior toy breed who had never worn either collar or harness in their life with previous owner. She was diagnosed with a collapsing trachea despite never wearing a collar. This is a hereditary condition.

      No it can't. It is a genetic defect of the breed. My old guy has never pulled on a leash harness and he has developed it in his old age. But I agree it would be nuts to walk a POM on leash to collar.
