How to have Wi-Fi in your backyard, Steve’s journey

  • Is this you? You want to use your Wi-Fi in the backyard but it just doesn’t work well. And if you do get some Wi-Fi it’s maybe fine for simple things, but not enough to stream your favorite show or have an important Zoom call.
    Maybe it is time to change the gear you use for your home Internet.
    Our friend Steve called us to ask for help. He wanted to Zoom from his favorite chair in his backyard while sipping on some nice red wine. But his internet just wasn’t fast enough. He wanted to do it himself this time instead of asking his sons to take care of it.
    We discovered he was using a combo Cable Modem/Wi-Fi Router that his internet provider had installed and rented to him. And that box just couldn’t reach from his living room in the front of the house to the yard.
    So Steve decided to purchase his own gear and switch to a separate box for the cable modem and a mesh router for his Wi-Fi. Thanks to a mesh network, he put Wi-Fi in various places in the house, including his back window so he could boost his Wi-Fi to his favorite chair in the backyard.
    Steve also likes not having to rent outdated equipment from his internet provider. His new equipment will pay for itself in less than two years. Plus if newer technology comes along such as Wi-Fi 6, he can change out just his router, or if he wants faster internet he can buy a new state-of-the-art cable modem.
    Watch the video to learn about Steve’s journey to Internet independence and fast backyard WiFi.
    Thanks to Steve and Susie for staring in this video and serving the wine!

    Arris Surfboard is hands down better than the crap the cable companies give you. I got rid of the cable company gear a decade ago. I am using a TP-Link Deco setup and it has been working great for me

      we like the arris too. had a Deco router for a while and now an Orbi. both benefited from the fast arris.

    Sorry if I missed it but what type of Internet package do you have?

      @Appmyhome  14 днів тому

      Xfniity cable. key is to get at least 200 down and 40 up especially if you have cameras.

    I live in an area where I can get mediocre cell signal in my driveway only lol. Is there a way to pick up the signal outside and boost it to my home?

      You are talking cell not Wi-Fi correct? You might be able to get a device from your cell carrier that can act as a cell repeater. I would think the issue though would be the repeater would need a power source at your driveway location.SureCall is one company that makes them. As for power maybe there is a solar/battery solution available.

    What did you spend on this system? We have the same problem not being able to get WiFi in our backyard which is only 25 feet from the crap from the cable company.

    • @Appmyhome
      @Appmyhome  Рік тому +1

      these are fairly expensive compared to a single router since for example this model has three boxes. but you can find various companies offering a mesh system. key here is the placement. what is between your router and the device 25 ft away. is the wall stucco with wire mesh, or stone or other thick wall? they can all affect. if you get a mesh, put one of the boxes near a window facing by the backyard as that will minimize the wall effects. not sure what box you have from the cable company but older models likely have range issues. so you could check with your cable company and see if they have a newer model. plus some cable companies provide extenders. we like having our own equipment since we don’t have to pay their rental fees and we can upgrade the router and the cable modem at our own pace as tech evolves.
