    Being that I spent good money on the Orbi Pro and have a backyard that I am plan to have various Smart WiFi products including cameras, Hot Tub, Gazebo with a TV that will all need WiFi, this video sold me on the Orbi Outdoor Satellite. It also sold my cousin which now has the exact setup you have including the location of her upstairs Satellite. As I left her house after setting up her entire new WiFi system, I had a strong WiFi connection 2 blocks away in my car. Amazing and thanks for this video.

    Ring camera usage/coverage in yards....is something many people need.
    I am back to install Starlink....looking for instruction....I had installed Orbi in 2017
    It is 2021
    Thanks for reminding me that my 40’ - away brick building Satellite can be installed outdoors....had forgotten the entire install process.

    Is the satellite in the loft wired to the Orbi router? In your experience is Ethernet backhaul worth a full day of running cables? Would love to get a video of orbi setup with Ethernet backhaul. There’s almost nothing on UA-cam with this. Maybe that’s bc it’s unnecessary... not sure.
    I don’t have the orbi yet but am trying to make sure I have the proper cables, switches, etc for a wired backhaul set up before purchasing.
    Great video, no specific questions about the outdoor unit, looks great.

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  5 років тому

      Yes, both my indoor satellites are wired (see my full Orbi review video at ua-cam.com/video/jXuKnOJpp2g/v-deo.html) - but I already had ethernet cables in place. If it's just the Orbi satellites, and you're not running lots of wired things off them too, you'll probably be fine with wireless backhaul as it generally works very well. Try it first and then run cables if performance isn't what you'd hoped! In my other Home WiFi makeover video, we just used wireless backhaul, and it worked great, as does the wireless to my outdoor Orbi. Hope that makes sense!

      Switched On Network it does. Thanks for the reply, and I was sort of of leaning toward trying wireless first anyway. House is only around 2500sq ft but lots of hallways and closed off rooms, so walls everywhere have me a little concerned. I went ahead and ordered the rbk53 and the necessary switches and cables for wired if I go that route. I do have a nice covered deck outside area I may use one satellite for (wouldn’t need this “outside” version for my use case)

    Thank you for the review. It is much better than anything I've found at Netgear! Just set mine up yesterday and like you, wish it would connect to the closer satellite rather than the router. I was daisy chaining out to it, but seems that I may can eliminate the one in between and move it to another location. Have you ever noticed that not all of your devices show on the orbi app? I have a couple of smart TV's that do not show up in my device list.

    I don’t get the point about the power plug. It’s an outside unit, meant to be plugged in outside not inside. You could have just used the outside plug on your shed, no need to drill. My biggest problem is that my windows shield the signal almost completely. Opening the terrace door snd I have full signal strength. Closing the door and it drops considerably. This causes my outside camera to drop-off the network from time to time. Being a security device, this is problematic. The Orbi not having a network connector is an issue here, as it doesn’t solve my problem. Any other devices you can suggest, which works with Orbi and has a network connector, and can be used fully outside?

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  2 роки тому

      I wouldn't have wanted to use the outdoor socket for several reasons, ranging from how messy it would look with the trailing power cable visible versus coming out of the wall behind the mounted device, to making it tamper proof, not using up a socket I use for other things (like lawnmower) and I'm also not sure if the transformer block is ok to use outdoors too (not checked though tbf). I positioned the indoor satellite as close to the outdoor window as possible to maximize signal in the garden and that worked great, but appreciate that might not work the same for you. Netgear don't do a wired outdoor device (I'd DEFINITELY use it if they did, especially as I've now knocked down that summerhouse as well as upgraded to the WiFi 6 Orbi system which doesn't have an outdoor satellite) but you might have some luck with Ubiquiti?

    Great video! ...even though it's quite old LOL. I found it very informative and I've subscribed to your channel. I read a lot of the comments but didn't quite get a question I have answered. I did read your comment that an Orbi satellite is different than the Orbi extender. But I've read elsewhere too that an Orbi mesh system (router + satellites) can only have a maximum 3 satellites...which is what I have. Will the Orbi extender be ok to add to my "maxed-out" satellite system?

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  Рік тому

      Thanks, glad you liked the vid! I think 3 is the maximum number that's officially supported but you can add more than 3 (I forget how many exactly) and they should work fine. It's not a technical limit.

    Excellent video! I've been searching for weeks for something that's simple to setup yet effective. My only question is, my outbuilding is half of the distance you had. Could I install the the wifi extender on the inside of the building instead of mounting it on the well and it will work just as well or does it have to be mounted outside?

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork

    Question: At the beginning of your video, I thought I heard you say that Netgear has made this Outdoor Satellite work with other routers, not just Orbi. I'm trying to connect to an eero router. Which version of the outdoor satellite do you have? I'm not sure if the v1 is actually different hardware from the v2 or if it's just firmware, but I know the one they sent me for the video will definitely work with any router, but just not be quite as functional of course...

    Great video. I'm about to purchase one of these systems.
    I am obviously new to this particular wifi technology. So... I am curious as to why one of the units is called a satellite.
    Is there a difference between one of Orbi's extenders and the satellite, that comes with the kit?

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  2 роки тому

      Yes, satellites - as part of a mesh system - have their own dedicated connection back to the main router (either wired or wirelessly) which is separate from their own bandwidth for taking to devices. Extenders, on the other hand, use up half the available bandwidth talking back to the router so they'll never work as well as a mesh system.

    • @Seemsayin
      @Seemsayin 2 роки тому

      @@SwitchedOnNetwork Thank you for replying. Unfortunately... I asked the wrong question. Until I watched a few more videos... I became aware that the "extender" part of this mesh system is referred to as a satellite. I was previously under the impression that the satellite was a special component, that was somehow meant to connect to a satellite dish. (Imagine that!) Turns out that the "extender" part just happens to be named "satellite". Sorry for the confusion.
      I placed my order. Can't wait till it shows up! On my router, the signal REALLY peters out at about 30 feet. My tv is 40 feet away. The signal is nearly non existent. And I'm not in a position to relocate the router, nor am I in a position to run a big ethernet cable. Really hoping this will do the trick.

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Marcela :) Yes it'll work with any router, from any manufacturer, but it functions in different ways. If it's paired with an Orbi system, it can function as a mesh satellite (which is best) but if you don't have an Orbi system, it will function as a standard WiFi Extender - not quite as funky as a mesh satellite, but it will still work great to help boost your WiFi to outside.

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork

      You can't use a (normal) satellite unless you have an Orbi router too, as they have to communicate with that. The exception to that is the Outdoor Satellite, which can work in "Wifi Extender mode"... in which case it doesn't function as a Satellite, but as a wifi extender with all the downsides that brings. So you lose most of the benefit. Much better to do a full switch to Orbi everywhere if you can, and to avoid the Double NAT issue of using your Sky modem/router you could get something like a Draytek Vigor 130 (geni.us/DrayTekVigor130) to replace that so you're not using the Sky kit at all. You'd just copy the account/login details from your Sky router and input them into that to connect.
      [Double check that Sky will let you do that, I presume they will but I've never been a Sky customer so can't be 100% certain - also double check that that Modem will work... if not, ask in Sky forums for which is best!]

      haha, I know what you mean! ;-) Orbi supports beamforming and AFAIK it's enabled on the Satellite even when using as an Extender, so it doesn't matter which way you face it. If you're not sure what beamforming is, Network World do a much better job than I could of explaining: "Beamforming is a technique that focuses a wireless signal towards a specific receiving device, rather than having the signal spread in all directions from a broadcast antenna, as it normally would. The resulting more direct connection is faster and more reliable than it would be without beamforming."

      Yes, it'll work with any router as a WiFi extender, so you'll just need to switch it to that from Orbi mode, then it should work great! If you have a WiFi signal analyser app on your phone, have a wander around outside and try and place it somewhere towards the outside of the signal perimeter from the router in your home. You'll want to place the Orbi Outdoor as far away from your home as you can get away with, so that it extends the signal the furthest possible distance from your home, but also close enough so that the signal it's repeating/boosting is still a strong one.

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  4 роки тому +1

      That will depend on the strength of the signals coming from the Apple router, and any large objects or interference it might come up against. The only way to know for sure is to order one and try it - you'll probably find that it works great, but if it doesn't then it'll be the Apple router's fault rather than this, because this works great. Why not get a whole Orbi system? This works best in Orbi mode and not just as a regular "wifi extender" because then it can use the DEDICATED 5GHz backhaul connection!

The 5GHz wireless backhaul works very well and does things like beam forming to focus the signal in only the direction it needs to, etc., so it's very impressive. It will, yes - you can just it just as a standard WiFi extender as well as in "Orbi mode". It won't be quite as fast (in terms of theoretical max speeds), as it won't use a dedicated separate channel to talk to your Sky Q box, but it should still work great!

    Hi Paul, would love to hear your insights on how the Netgear NIGHTHAWK X6S TRI-BAND WIFI MESH EXTENDER Model: EX8000 compares to the Orbi system. Would I get the same or better performance if I connect two (hard wired) to my providers modem or is there a reason to use the Orbi system?

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  5 років тому +1

      Hi James, I've never used them myself so can't comment authoritatively, but I'd imagine you'd get similar-ish performance. However, if still using your provider's router that will probably be less capable than an Orbi router so speeds by that might be less fast, plus since it'll essentially be the backbone of the entire system, throughput and ability to sustain more devices might be less, depending on the specs of your provider router and if it has the power to process everything. Just my initial thoughts, hope that makes sense!

      @@SwitchedOnNetwork If I add an Netgear Nighthawk router to the comparison in combination with the EX8000, would that be a better choice? Any idea how Netgear ranks them performance wise?

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  5 років тому +1

      My understanding is that the Nighthawk extenders are really aimed at people who either have *any* router, or already have a Nighthawk router and wouldn't want to switch to Orbi, but just want to add Mesh functionality to their existing system (Nighthawk or not). If you're starting from scratch, and/or want the best Mesh network setup, I'd go for Orbi.

    Thanks for the really informative video. Had a couple of questions, hope you can help. I’m looking at getting wifi in my new garden office (30 metres from the house) but don’t want to use an ethernet cable. Seems like the Orbi is a good alternative.
    Would it work with the Orbi Whole Dual band mesh 6 system (RBK352)? Or does it need to work with a specific mesh system?
    Have you seen anything comparable in getting good wifi to a summerhouse as its obviously pretty $?

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork

      AFAIK this will work with the Orbi WiFi 6 system, yes (but check the website etc)
      As an alternative you could look into the Ubiquiti Point-to-Point links which are also excellent (you'd also need a wireless router to plug into that to create a wireless AP for your garden office).

      Powerline could work, but it'll never be anything like as good as Orbi Outdoor, Ubiquiti or an ethernet cable (I also have an armoured outdoor Cat6 cable to mine). If it helps, I put one of these at the very bottom of my garden to replace the old Orbi Outdoor (geni.us/TPLink-Outdoor-AP-PoE [affiliate link]) last summer. (It's at the very very bottom - I've knocked down the green summerhouse you see in the video.) I just set the same SSID/Password as the rest of my Orbi system, which I know is technically sacrilege but it's far enough away from the house that the devices down there don't connect to the house, and I just put this transmit strength to a nice low setting so I don't see it in the house. Advantages of it are that it's PoE so (a) doesn't require a power outlet down there and (b) gets its backhaul over ethernet too, so no having to piggyback off the weak signal coming from the house.

    Hey do I have to turn off fios wifi if Orbi and Fios both independently are working just fine? Basically was thinking of having Orbi which I'm assuming will run 5hz and leaving the Fios to run 2.5hz (Blink security network needs it). Thanks

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  5 років тому

      That depends, are you adding just an outdoor satellite to be used in Extender Mode? If so, you'll keep Fios (I just had to Google what that is lol) for your house and then the Orbi extender will piggyback off that for your garden. It does both 5GHz and 2.4GHz too, by the way.
      If, on the other hand, you're using an Orbi router and satellites in your house too, and using Orbi as a whole system, then you'll want to disable everything other than pure modem functionality on the Fios and connect that to the Internet port on the Orbi router. Hope that helps!

Will it work for that? I currently have a wireless IP webcam exactly where I want to place this Netgear device at. Thanks.

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  3 роки тому

      The difference is that a WiFi extender just takes the existing WiFi signal that it finds wherever you place it, and then both rebroadcasts that out itself (extending the range) and also talks back to the main router on the WiFi signal that it's boosting (for 2 way comms). So it's amplifying a weak signal that it finds, and uses up half of its own bandwidth talking back and forth with the main router. A mesh satellite, on the other hand, has a dedicated high-speed 5GHz wireless backhaul back to the main router, which is separate from everything else and isn't just boosting/rebroadcasting a signal that it finds - so performance is able to be much better. That's not to say that WiFi extenders never work well, but just the a mesh network with satellite/access points around the place is far superior.
      200ft being over 60m I think you'll probably struggle to be honest - although it depends on how good your ASUS router's signal is at that point as to whether the Orbi will have much to be able to boost/extend. If you go and stand there and do a speedtest on your phone, do you get a fast speed and a decent WiFi signal? If there's not much in the way of objects in the way or things to interfere, you might be OK!

      No need to apologise, no such thing as a silly question! The answer is no unfortunately, this is just an extension of your home's internal network. It connects back to your main router via a dedicated backhaul channel and then acts as another access point. All things go to and from your main router so if that's offline then this will only connect you to internal devices on your home network. It doesn't connect directly to the Internet itself.
