While it's not the ridiculous thing about it, the fact that it's not deterministic is such a pain. You know they got it, but there's like 5% they don't so you have to make them have it.
I set out on this journey of cataloging North 100 Showdown match outcomes and die roll proficiency with no expectations of ever being directly mentioned, so the beginning of this episode was a big moment for me. In celebration I am adding a page to my excel sheet that will break down episodes per game rather than per match. I might have it ready for the next episode but I'm not certain, it will take about 4 times the data entry of the current sheet. Now, onto this match's stats. Wheeler won the match on the play, bringing him to 68% die roll success, a 78% winning record on the play, and a 72% winning record overall. Nelson lost this match on the draw, bringing him to 27% die roll success, an 18% winning record on the draw, and a 13% winning record overall.
I love the combo of talking about Courser being old into referencing a series of GI Joe meme videos as if that isn't also 10+ years old at this point. I truly love how esoteric that sounds for people who have no idea what you're referencing
12:50 Fun fact: if Wheeler wanted to spend 4 life, he could have used Spellskite to redirect the Skullclamp equip after targeting another creature. Spellskite's ability makes it become the target, so it triggers Nadu.
when i learned that ward triggers of becoming targeted, i wanted to make a deck that was "copy spellskite, give ward, counter any targeted thing". the best way i could think of to do that was Green Blue. and then nadu dropped and i was like "another trigger on target? ok". now i dont have any friends :(
I don’t think that’s how that works. I’m pretty sure, despite how the ability seems worded, that it only works off of something being declared a target and not off of the target being redirected. Which would explain why he didn’t do that.
Oooh, there's a cool niche interaction with Nadu and Spellskite in that first game - if you activate something like Clamp/Mom targeting something other than spellskite (getting a nadu trigger), then activate spellskite targeting that activated ability, you'll get an additional Nadu trigger off of skite once you change the target over to it (since Nadu just cares about when something "becomes a target"). It's only useful if you're choked on ways to proc Nadu (and can spare the life/mana), but it's _very_ flashy and therefore worth it.
.... Wtf even when I thought I understood the potential of Nadu I thought it was cracked in half, then Wheeler does stuff with it I didn't even think of.. Card is bonkers..
So Wheeler's fun line at the end of g3 doesn't actually work. Nadu is in play already (this is important for timestamps). Oko +1 targets Skullclamp It becomes a 3/3 green elk, it gains "Whenever this creature becomes the target of a spell or ability, reveal the top card of your library. If it’s a land card, put it onto the battlefield. Otherwise, put it into your hand. This ability triggers only twice each turn.” Then, as per Oko's ability, it loses all abilities. When Lightning greaves targets Skullclamp, it does not trigger, as it has no abilities. If you make a bunch of elks and then play Nadu, the elks will have the ability, but the other way around is not so friendly to Toucan Sam.
is it a case of dependencies though the nadu only affects the skull clamp because it got turned into a creature with no abilities so that effect happens first then the nadu effect grants the ability or am I wrong about how dependencies work in this situation ?
Flying to events with pricey decks sounds very scary to me. A friend of mine got his backpack stolen in a GP with decks worth probably at the 10k range.. the thieves were organized, distracting him while blocking the camera and poof, backpack gone. Never lose sight of your stuff!
Wheeler talking about trying to remember what fetchables you still have left makes me think I may want to bring a printout of the decklist to cross off tutor targets as I go
something that I feel is important to note is that even though Wheeler is saying Nadu trigger for all of his stuff, really they are triggers on the individual creatures themselves since Nadu gives that ability to all of your creatures
Forgive me if I’m wrong but Nadu doesn’t trigger at all. Since he gives the creatures the ability wouldn’t the triggers be coming from the creatures given the ability?
I think the most important comment I could make regarding Nadu is, its an important distinction that its not Nadu who's triggering its the creature being targeted.
Tell me if I'm wrong, but couldn't Wheeler use spellskite at 13:48 to redirect the skullclamp's equip ability to itself for another Nadu trigger? If that wouldn't work with equipment for whatever reason, what about using spellskite at 17:48 to redirect mom's ability to itself for another Nadu trigger?
Lightning bolt was part of the cycle of 1 for 3 is what you mean. Healing Salv, Giant Growth, Lightning bolt, Dark Ritual, and an underpowered blue card I cant remember that is 1 for 3. . . .
It's pretty obvious that Nadu was designed to only trigger twice per turn total, not twice per turn per creature, but whoever typed it out didn't format it that way. It would be a perfectly fair card if that were how it worked.
Nadu = "Na, du?" In German meaning "hey you". "Na, du?" is a famously bad opener when you want to start a conversation, for example when flirting. You can think of it equivalent to "How you doin?" by Joey from Friends.

There once was a Springheart Nantuko That comboed with Nadu and Shuko Equip them for free My foe scooped on turn three And dropped out to go play rounds of Uno
Creature combo decks tend to only pack things that facilitate the combo or protect the combo. Does Urza's Saga do either of those things well? Slowly tutor for Skullclamp, an equipment that costs mana to target? Slowly tutor a Mox which is also just a 1 mana rock replacing that 1 mana land that just sacrificed itself? It's a fair question, but I feel like that's a fair answer too.
@@markbrierley6367 fair enough, im a total newb to the format so that could be entirely correct, my intuition just says that a free way of getting shuko is worth but maybe not

@@NiimuraJun can confirm this DOES work. Any misdirection effects will trigger nadu or ward. Contrast with “when you cast a spell that targets”
I don't mean to alarm anyone, but I think it's possible this Nadu card might be pretty busted.
