Howdy from East Texas. When you mentioned "Crowders" it was clear you knew something about southern peas. Looking forward to exploring your other videos.
This is my first year growing these as they are my very favorites! I have no clue what I am doing over here in DFW. I have one plant to see what this is all about. Praying for at least a taste.
I'm from Central Florida and I grew up eating these, my grandmother used to go pick them from a neighborhood field. I ordered my first seeds to give them a shot, I don't think it's too late in Florida 🤞🤞
0:49 Unlike black eye and purple hull peas, it's best to inoculate zipper peas. In fact, the place I purchase mine this year had them already inoculated and they came up fast and are looking very healthy! I've never had these and can't wait until harvest time!.
I know I had a problem with my zippers coming up as well I planted quite a large area and I probably got a dozen plants. Zippers are fairly notorious for this every so often. Some years are great and some years not so great as far as germination. Last year I planted three succession plantings of them and they all came up and were great. This year we don't have any. Sometimes the seed stock is not so wonderful. I have not tried Texas cream peas before. We'll have to look into that. Thanks for watching.
My childhood! Zipper peas are my absolute favorite with such sweet memories shelling these with my grandfather. I'm sure I've missed the opportunity this year but any idea the latest these can be planted in 9a?
Well I'm not so sure that you couldn't go ahead and plant them now in your zone. Peas like heat and we definitely have that LOL. I'm in 8B and last year I planted three crops in succession. I still had peas in October.
As long as there is enough moisture in the soil to get them to sprout, i am sure they will be fine. I am in 7b and the first half of 7th month (July) is ideal, but they can be planted later. Planted too early they tend to be infested with the cowpea curculio.
My zipper pea seeds had a blue coating? What are they coated with? I planted crowder peas and they did great. I just planted my zippers today. Enjoyed your video. Thanks
Lisa, I'm not sure what the coating is nor why they coat it. Mine are always pink. No other pea seed I plant has a coating, just the zippers. I have meant to ask the place where I buy all my bulk seeds but always forget. LOL. Comes with age I guess. I will try to remember the next time I'm there and let you know. Thanks for watching.
Can you completely dry out the peas that are already hard and somewhat dried, and store them on the shelf and cook them later like a dried bean, like kidney bean or black bean?
I’m not sure about that, but I do know you can saved some dried ones for next years garden. Last year was my first time growing them & I saved one about 5 dried peas & just replanted them two weeks ago & they’ve already germinated & grown a couple inches.
My zipper cream peas are just about right to harvest but I am seeing some bug bites or stings that leave a little dot on the pea do I need to pick them out or just leave them in the mix? Thanks
Sorry I didn't get back to you right away. If the bites are really bad or the hole is a big one like a worm might be in it I feed those to the chickens. But if it's just a small little sting, most of the time I will just leave it in with the rest of them. Depending on where you live, Ant stings can be a problem especially if you don't spray your peas. And we don't spray ours. Thanks for watching
Zippers like warm temperatures. Keep in mind that I live in Florida and I plant them toward the end of March or the first part of April. As a matter of fact I planted again in July and again at the end of August. I am picking the ones planted in July now. The bug pressure has been less with this late crop. The ones are planted the end of August will be ready in October. But for my area that's fine I will not get Frost or cold weather until November fairly late. Glad you found us thanks for watching.
Hey there! In trying to find Conch Pea seeds, I finally settled on Lady Cream Peas. Are you familiar with this variety? Do you think they may be grown similar to your zipper peas? I am a southern girl, now living in the midwest - and I am bound and determined to have a taste of home. I truly miss my mom's Conch Peas cooked with onion and bacon. Thank you for any thoughts.
I have never grown conch peas but the little I do know about them it sounds like the lady cream peas should be a good substitute. I do think that they would be grown similar to zipper peas. They are both a cream pea and I would see no reason for them not to be grown the same.I understand about missing the taste of home. Thanks for watching.
Your plants look a lot more compact than mine. Mine could have/should have been on a trellis. Three foot rows and nowhere to walk. I imagine even four or five foot rows would have closed up completely. Didn't use a lot of fertilizer but next time I guess I shouldn't at all.
Same here Zone 9B Central Florida should have used the trellis even my top pick purple hulls after 4 or five plantings are beginning to Vining p o l e like more and more but nevertheless continue great taste whatever?
@@pemberleyfarmhomestead5258 thank you, I’m planting these for first time. My soil is in great shape. Treated it with cotton gin compost that I found, think it’s going to boost everything
Robert, we don't have any exotic recipes for zippers we only just put them in boiling water with whatever type of seasoning you like as far as meat seasoning or just butter. A lot of times when they are fresh you don't even need anything but salt. As far as the type of meat seasoning, I have used bacon or white meat which is also known as fat back, but I have also used just chicken broth or just butter. It really is up to you as far as your taste preference. Thanks for watching.
Hi,I absolutely love these peas ! This is my first time growing them . So maybe you can answer some questions for me ? My co-op said they were a simi trellising. I did not allow for that kind of space in my garden 😬 when I planters them 🤷🏼♀️. So they have grown and they are shooting off trellising vines that are headed for my cucumbers ,tomato’s and watermelon 😱 how long (feet)will those vines run would you say ?im feeling like I should have trellised them .... but you clearly didn’t so it makes me feel better . Thank you for any help
I have never trellised them. Depending on how close together you made the rows they may kind of join together making it a little difficult to get down between your rows but I have never trellised them and have no problem with it and have grown them for many years. But I guess in answer to your question they're Runners maybe two or three feet at the most . To tell you the truth for my own self I would consider trellising these peas too time consuming for no more trouble than they are. I am so glad you like them! They are my favorites. Not only for their taste but for their ease of shelling. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the info !!
I live in Houston tx and they LOVE the heat .
My mother in law calls them lady cream peas.
Your info was very helpful 😊
Glad to be of help. They are our favorite pea and we very rarely grow anything else. Thanks for watching.

6/15 NE FLORIDA Planted zippers and Texas cream peas, only 7 zippers sprouted 21 Texas creams. Empty spaces went with more Texas creams.

Growing some cowpeas this yr son enjoyed first batch but I need a cooking video
Well you may be in luck. After a long UA-cam absence we finally have our computer situation worked out and I have some zipper peas that need cooking.

All 3 are in the same family... But my Lady Cream Peas need something to grow up on... They 're vine like growth need fencing or netting to grow on...

I planted my rows 4 feet apart and they still all grew together and they have runners so they probably would climb up a trellis…

I’m planting this year but I’ve just put black material on entire garden, not sure how to grow without wasting space. Burnt holes for green beans
I don't use the ground covers. But I would imagine if you are using that you could do the same thing for the peas as you are for the green beans

How many days til harvest?
70 days, give or take. Things that will affect the time are weather, condition of the soil, etc.
