Man, Geras had a huge character upgrade in MK1 when compared to MK11. From a mere lackey to the most underwhelming villain in the whole franchise to not just being Liu Kang’s right hand man but a great bro and friend with an actual opinion!
It's crazy how underwhelming of a villain he was, when we saw him essentially beat Liu Kang AND Kung Lao, and ALMOST beat Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, AND Fujin at the same time.
I'm glad Geras has escaped his billions of lifetimes of meaningless servitude. Now he can take the role he wants, enjoy the peace he has, and has formed genuine friendship with Liu Kang instead of always catering to Kronika's sociopathy.
Liu kang gave garas the one thing Kornika denied him. Peace While she sent him to die thousands and thousands of times, he have him a chance to be free.
I’m curious what Liu Kang said to Geras at the dawn of creation. “I may be your creator, but your role is not that of servitude, never again. But possibly…you are and will be, my one and only true friend. My equal.” And Geras fulfilled it perfectly and beyond. Not only supporting Liu Kang from eons of solitude, but to predict what might be necessary eons into the future. Saving the power of creation, NEVER USING IT FOR HIMSELF, keeping it in what only he knows Liu Kang treasures most,… And most importantly, shielding Liu Kang of fate’s ill intention for his happiness to his fullest abilities. Geras said he was created from Liu Kang’s image. But he has exceeded far beyond. I really hope Netherealm spare their hands from twisting this one character.
NRS honestly has no reason to retcon Geras’ character since his character was received so well in this game now that the writers were able to give him a much more fulfilling story. It honestly sounds to me like you might as well have perfectly quoted what Liu Kang must’ve said to Geras when he reconstructed him at the dawn of time. Geras is by no means Liu Kang’s servant, rather his equal and indeed his only friend. As you stated, Geras has free will and is by no means bound to Liu Kang by anything other than duty and camaraderie. Geras had the power to easily turn on Liu Kang and take his power any time he wanted, but chose not to because he trusts Liu Kang, has faith in his vision, and in turn is content with safeguarding it.
Geras has clearly changed in a fundamental way too. His fighting style for example is more fluid for example, and I find that to be in line with his character. Honestly there's so much in this that I'd be here all day unpacking it. *Beautifully* worded, and I have similar questions. Not all I want answered, because I want room for these types of discussions.
I don't think he was received well, I remember only one thing. *Hate.* Hate of him in Kombat League. I think you may be (or perhaps I am) conflating his gameplay and his role in the story. Personally, seeing him return at first pissed me off, but I'm happy to admit I feel it was wrong to think that way. Doesn't matter, this discussion's still fantastic and that's my one tiny, petty disagreement lol. And all that matters really is him truly believing in Liu Kang, that's the fantastic part.
When Geras and Liu Kang theorised that the threat was someone who had survived the previous timeline, i was dead certain it was going to be Dark Raiden, the one who vanished when Kronikas time merge started to happen in MK11. That he somehow had the vendetta against God Liu Kang, since he was technically revenent Liu Kang too (Raiden mixed his Revenent self with his past self and his own godhood to make god Liu Kang). But the moment Geras revieled that there was a second timeline runing parallel to Liu Kangs i knew it was Shang Tsung from Aftermath.
@@Mukation you initial theory is... wack? He simply got overwritten with past raiden and him having a vendetta with god liu kang is... wtf? Raiden was filled with remorse each time he saw revenant liu kang, it shouldve been liu kang having a vendetta against raiden
@@aokyoutsuki7744 It wasn't a thourogly thought out theory, it was just my quick assumption when Geras and Liu Kang theorised about someone else surviving the previous timeline. 1:00 Should've figured out this was foreshadowing; that jade thingie was G.Kung Lao's gift to Liu. Geras was checking it out _if Liu's Titan powers are still safe!_ 🤯
He wasn’t really a mindless construct. He was just forced to serve Kronika, eternally. The thing is, Geras respected the Shaolins, he even said it in the previous timeline. And his ending proves that he wanted a better vision to stop an everlasting timeline war.
Still don't get why they openly revealed in front of everyone including Shang Tsung/Quan Chi that he kept those powers on Earthrealm at the fire garden
I love this. Geras was made to be more friendly. A good friend. Guardian. Confidant. This is quite the redeption story, and the perfect partner for the Fire Lord.
I think the Hourglass looks different, not just because Liu Kang restarted the timeline, but because it now belongs to him and that makes it take the form of its user.
It’s freaky to think how much Shang Tsung and Quan Chi had affected the story. They were never the main antagonists but the amount of leg work they did to set so many gears in motion is mind boggling. The corruption of the Lin Kuei, Scorpions downfall, Milleena’s creation, Shao Khans rule, Shinnok’s rise and many more.
don’t forget how Quan Chi and Bi Han revived Sindel. Shao gave Shang’s life force to Sindel, and she damn near killed everyone. imagine how different mkx would’ve been if it weren’t for Sindel’s revival
12:03 This was such a genuin scene between Liu Kang and Geras. Liu found the Jade Jaguar of important value. Geras knew this and felt it be the proper place to store the power of the hour glass. I couldn't help but feeling thankful just as Liu Kang for Gera's wisdom and friendship.
For a lot of people saying that Geras, while living a better life, is in servitude, there’s one thing I’d like to point out. Even if he was a slave to Liu, he could’ve rebelled since he has a sense of self that’s a little more advanced than 11’s. But he chose not to. He said to Liu in regards to why he didn’t take the powers himself, that he had _faith_ I think that’s a very important distinction. Not that he had a duty to Liu, no, he _chose_ to throw his lot with Liu and continued to do so, because he believed in, not his creator, but his _friend_ and I think that’s beautiful…
I believe Geras had free will from the moment when he was made by Liu Kang. When he was under Kronika's control, he was just a mindless minion, who was programmed to be loyal to her. But with Liu Kang, Geras was willingly loyal to him, because he saw in Liu not only his creator, but a closest friend.
But he’s not a slave to Liu and *that’s* why it’s beautiful. With Kronika he had no choice and no say. She used him like a tool because to her that’s all he was. Liu didn’t do that. It’s clear from their interactions that they see each other as friends and respect one another. I fully believe that if Geras wanted to leave or devote himself to something else Liu would let him. But Geras is content with his role and his duty so he stays. I don’t think it’s fair to parallel his relationship with Liu and the job he had for Kronika so directly by still referring to Geras as a slave in MK1.
@@caylya7869it was also generally good and well-paced too, although my issues with most MK stories still remain: insufficient showcase of strength for most characters. Like Liu Kang for instance, dude can spawn fire dragons, yet not once in story mode have I seen him do that.
@@roogoculus2885Imagine if the Campaign's fight portions are played like this? ▪︎VS chapters of depleting an opponent's health would be reserved when the character is either sparring with a friend, or fighting against a minion or the main enemy in the final chapter (because the later act should be a time where the hero has refined himself/herself). ▪︎Survival would be implemented as a test for the player to ensure his/her health remains once the timer goes to zero. That direction would provide a sufficient compromise in fighting characters who were written to be stronger WITHOUT reducing them as jobbers. Plus, maybe Liu Kang's Mortal Kombat tournament could have also reworked as an endurance and attrition test where the goal is for the chosen Champion to remain standing against a number of Champions until zero, otherwise having the health bar be depleted before the timer goes to zero means a loss.
yep. you have to remember that Kronika starved Geras of peace. Kronika sent him to die thousands of times. Geras says that he’s only had to fight a few times since Liu Kang’s new era
I loved Geras story in this timeline, a lot better than the other timeline and his bond with Liu Kang is so wholesome like friends who have known each other for years.
I hated his trailer. Not because he seemed bad... Because I hated Geras at that point in my life. I absolutely love his character now. I was so wrong. His gameplay reflects this too. He's more surgical, fliud. He's not a hammer, he's closer to a scalpel.
Ok, but Gera’s sacrifice here is really underplayed. He literally kept a secret for eons at a time from his oldest friend, who often chose duty over desire despite the sacrifice, just so he could be happy with the life he chosen.
You ever read something that makes the moment stop, and the gears in your head are like a Looney Tunes clock? You did that. Just now. I never considered that. I consider him *humane* now, but I don't- didn't fully see him as *human.* You made me appreciate him even more with 2 sentences. *Bravo.*
From Kronika's wrath to Liu Kang's Will From a Imortal Minion to a Trusted Friend They really made Geras a Great Redeemer in Gaming History after Kratos of GoW 4 and GoW Ragnarok
To think, if someone has become a keeper of time, either is it a hero (like Liu Kang) or villain (like Shang Tsung), Geras will still be the one who serves.
Geras - "At least one is defying that destiny; Shang Tsung." Silverhand- 'See this? This is a look of un-f**king-surprise on my face.' Liu Kang - "Go on..."
@@DctctxActually, Kronika once said that she could wipe Raiden out of the history if she manage to restarted history. I think Liu Kang can, too, just that he doesn't want to
Something regarding the hourglass, that one person defined his destiny. Shang tsung may have suffer but he doesn't like it. That where kronika convinced him to tragically repeat the same thing as he was before. He may be powerful sorcerer but his true intention was helping her to destory liu kang timeline and repeating back to the same timeline. But General shao would have be more certian about being a Khan for outworld. That where he join shang tsung side to do it. Rewriting history may do but others out there may find it way to free and bring back the same way. If that happen, General Shao,Shang tsung and Quan Chi claimed to be the villains for MK by returning the same path as should be.
0:58 I just barely noticed within the first scene my guy Geras was already foreshadowing the jade statue that Lui Kang would later find out it withheld the power of the hour glass incase a dire situation would require him to reclaim that power for the better of his timeline .
One thing that I remember someone pointed out the difference between Kronika and Liu Kang on treating Geras is that while Kronika has Geras enforce her will and Kronika remains guarding the hourglass, Liu Kang goes out to do his duties himself, while Geras remains to watch the hourglass, hopefully being able to rest and remain in peace while watching the hourglass. Someone in the same comments section also mentioned that Liu Kang did not change Geras or remove his memories. This is all the OG Geras choosing a path for himself, not bound to Kronika or anyone else's will. If this is true, then you really have to give Liu Kang a lot of respect. He gives people choices and a right to decide what to do, and without a doubt, I can see Geras will take in what Liu Kang tries to teach him.
0:23 Since Liu Kang gives up the title of Keeper of time to become Earthrealm's protector, would that mean he's still a Demigod if his ending had anything to say about it?
Liu Kang is considered a demigod throughout the story, up until the end where he reclaims time's power and regains his Titan status. However, the process did irreperable damage to his body, so now he is no longer immortal and likely isn't as powerful as a standard Titan.
@@ES-dp6twI remember him saying he can still live eons more, we might get an old liu kang if his timeline were to last that long… unless nrs decides to reboot again for the 100th time
@@el_bamboo_third True, he's still got a couple of good centuries/milleniums in him. Feels bad for Geras though, who considers Liu Kang the closest thing to family he has and now must one day contend with burying him.
@ES-dp6tw Despite wielding the Hourglass he is a Titan in name only. In essence he is only a God. The Titans beside Kronika show to be something so far beyond out comprehension it wouldn't suprise if shaping time doesn't effect them at all.
No, he turned back into a Titan before Chapter 15, so he's now the Time Titan of his Timeline again, though he lost his Immortality and now can only live for like billion years.
I love how they treat Geras in this game. He was given his rightful chance to be a good character and not a jobber. Even in 11 his tower ending shows that deep down Geras had good in him, it was just misguided as he was forced to be a slave to Kronika. But Liu Kang treats him like a man, like an equal, not like a tool.
Can't believe the old Shang Tsung came back again. And again ge faces his rival Liu Kang again. Wait Fire thunder God Liu Kang. You know im getting to old for this now. But, its really good they made it and realize what happen from Mk11 to Mk 1. Nice.
I do like that it makes both endings of Aftermath canon. It felt kind of pointless having the Shang Tsung ending when we thought the Liu Kang ending was the real one, having both be real is nice.
Of course Liu Kang gets visibly pissed off when Geras mentions Shang Tsung. Guy’s like genital herpes: Liu Kang can never get rid of him and he always flares up and makes Liu Kang’s life a pain. 😑
Geras' upgrade is one of my favorite character upgrades of MK1. From being Kronika's controlled slave that gets himself killed over and over again, to Liu Kang's best friend and the guardian of the Hourglass.
That upgrade's even in his gameplay. He doesn't feel like a hammer anymore. He's surgical. Fluid. Even when I'm up against him, it's *exciting.* I'm not like "UGH great... here we go..."
Kronikas handwaving to control the hour glass gets me everytime lol shes like the main villain of a bedtime story the way Geras narrates who she is from the previous timeline😂😂😂
Here is what I see. The existence of Titans could be a major plot for the story moving forward. Since they are talking about multiple timelines there are such beings that exist outside of it such are the Titans. An EVIL Titan could be a major plot twist.
You know what I noticed about Geras' design? If you remember MK Armageddon, if you are in the character select and you see the Kreate-A-Fighter on there, their face looks almost puzzle like. Just like Geras and his body
I do like how Liu Kang created Geras to almost be like his bro and gave him free will to serve and protect the hourglass, they obviously look at each other as partners and equals no hierarchy over them.
There's very interesting cinematic details in the first cutscene. A lot of effort has gone into putting distance between Geras and Liu Kang. He appears across the room in a vaguely ominous pose (0:18), doesn't approach Liu Kang but circles him like a predator (0:25), and elements of the room are literally separating them (the columns at 0:30). When they finally come close together, Geras is shown towering over Liu Kang (0:40). It's very subtle stuff, but knowing Geras was an enemy in MK11, watching this cutscene I felt they were hinting at him being corrupted by the villain (who, at this point in the story, you think might be Kronika). He isn't, of course, that's the great part of his character arc. But all these quiet hints at "is he a friend or...?" keep you on your toes, and make it that much more impactful when Geras proves he's a loyal friend.
Geras is neither good or bad, he serves whomever is a keeper of time, and his actions would reflect their will. Even in MK11 he was pretty respectful to others, it’s just he had to obey kronika
God I love this game’s story, it’s very cohesive with little-to-no plot-holes, and all ends were tied up nicely. Ashrah is my favorite character by far. But I love how they did Liu Kang in this, and his relationship with his champions and Geras were great to see!
I've noticed that you either love, or hate this game's story. (Not literally you lol) Personally this is my favorite story since Deception. And I think the reason's obvious, this game was a love letter for people like me who grew up with the 3D games. I realize many people started with MK9 now. So to them, the Pyramid of Argus means nothing. It's just where Shao Khan won. But to me it's a culmination of events. "The Elder Gods demanded a failsafe." I see the vultures in my head right now as I type this. And Kintaro's war cry. *The poster!* And that's why I actually really liked the finale.
If I had written the script: Liu Kang: “The new era is unfolding as it should.” Geras: (Puts down statue and turns to face him with a concerned frown) “About that…” Liu Kang: “What is it? Is there a problem with the Hourglass?” Geras: “The Hourglass is fine. The problem is with something it has shown me.” Liu Kang: “What, Geras?” Geras: “When you restarted history, you altered the destinies of certain malefactors to neutralize them. At least one of them is, as Johnny Cage would say, not sticking to the script: Shang Tsung.”
I mean, Geras is made of sand. So it makes sense for him to come with the hourglass, this is also confirmed in his mk11 ending where he sacrifices himself so that the hourglass runs independently
I felt really bad for Geras in k11 just a tortured soul sent to die over and over, but now it seems like he has friends now and that actually makes me happy
I like how Liu Kang gave Geras a much better role in this timeline and gave him all the memories of the previous timelines and trusts him greatly to guard the Hourglass.
4:03-4:08 so Titans, deities who are more powerful and far superior to the Elder Gods, once they are killed are permadead. Let’s say Kronika dies in one timeline, does she cease to exist in every timeline she could possibly exist in?
The game told you that's not true here's why let me explain what is going on Wu-Tang killed her in his timeline and kitana fought and killed her in her timeline meaning there is more than one 🕜 f her and Shang kill her to
Kinda like for example, Liu Kang sent the past versions of Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, and the wind god Fujin back to the mk11 timeline, to the part where Kitana begins to battle Shao Kahn after she successfully rallied the Tarkatans and the Shokan to her side. Shang Tsung, Nightwolf and Fujin all arrived in that moment creating a splinter timeline separating it from the original events of MK11’s main story.
This is one of Liu Kang's shortcomings I think as the Keeper of Time; someone as crafty as Shang Tsung would have been safer kept as an ally rather than put in a life that would MAKE him crave for more. Granted even with rewrites there was always a chance of Shang Tsung's ambitions getting the better of him, but as an agent of Liu Kang himself, he'd also be in his direct supervision. Keep your enemies close and all that.
Geras was the biggest MVP in this and the best bro a man could ask for. Especially keeping the power of Keeper of Time behind Liu Kang's back in case he needs it and there's no other way around and never even touching that power once and coming up with it in such a time of crisis really was the ultimate clutch move. It wasn't even because Liu Kang gave him a way to be a guardian instead of a tool, but it was by his own will and heart as he genuinely had faith in Liu Kang's vision.
11:06 this scene is always weird to me. Because it’s one thing with all the heroes here (and even then it’s weird) but Quan Chi and Shang Tsung are within earshot why would you want them to overhear the fact that A. Titan Powers can be taken away in some way shape or form. B. That said Titan powers are stored somewhere they can sneak up and grab I’m just saying don’t take the risk
It’s a huge pity that Kronkia could not be the villain again, though I understand some fans may not like her, but I think she would’ve been a damn playable character with her power or what’s left of it

“I may be your creator, but your role is not that of servitude, never again. But possibly…you are and will be, my one and only true friend. My equal.”
And Geras fulfilled it perfectly and beyond.
Beautifully written
Absolutely love Liu Kang's look when Geras told him about Shang Tsung

They made it clear that "Dark Raiden" by the time of MK 11 was spiralling into madness.
"Shang Tsung"
Liu Kang's mind : "Ah shit... Here we go again..."
Now remember that Geras even in MK11 payed respects for Liu Kang

Geras went from a mindless construct of Kronika to being the best bro anyone could ever ask for
Who feel bad for the other Geras in other timelines that are evil just like Titan Shang?
He wasn’t really a mindless construct. He was just forced to serve Kronika, eternally. The thing is, Geras respected the Shaolins, he even said it in the previous timeline. And his ending proves that he wanted a better vision to stop an everlasting timeline war.
0:55 Geras holding that figure foreshadowed it’s importance later on in the story.
About to said the same
Still don't get why they openly revealed in front of everyone including Shang Tsung/Quan Chi that he kept those powers on Earthrealm at the fire garden
@@KingShibe Because Liu Kang and Geras IMMEDIATELY went to go get the statue to restore Liu's Titan powers.
Liu kang and geras are a great team
Probably one of the most underrated duos in all of Mortal Kombat history
12:03 This was such a genuin scene between Liu Kang and Geras. Liu found the Jade Jaguar of important value. Geras knew this and felt it be the proper place to store the power of the hour glass. I couldn't help but feeling thankful just as Liu Kang for Gera's wisdom and friendship.
For a lot of people saying that Geras, while living a better life, is in servitude, there’s one thing I’d like to point out.
Even if he was a slave to Liu, he could’ve rebelled since he has a sense of self that’s a little more advanced than 11’s. But he chose not to. He said to Liu in regards to why he didn’t take the powers himself, that he had _faith_
I think that’s a very important distinction.
Better storyline than 9/10 movies of today.
While a better story than X’s, 11’s, and possibly even 9’s, the final chapter felt a bit rushed
@@dilloon7626It was good because it was a reboot and was fresh.

@@roogoculus2885 yea pretty much all you see him do most of the time is summon fire portals
The friendship between Liu Kang and Gerras, along with Geras’ character development are my favorite parts of this game

Honestly, the way they chat, I’m waiting for the cutscene where they argue about the timeline where Liu Kang didn’t pay rent.
Ok, but Gera’s sacrifice here is really underplayed. He literally kept a secret for eons at a time from his oldest friend, who often chose duty over desire despite the sacrifice, just so he could be happy with the life he chosen.

I like when regarding using the Hourglass, Liu Kang and Geras would consult deeply when using such power.

You know what I noticed about Geras' design? If you remember MK Armageddon, if you are in the character select and you see the Kreate-A-Fighter on there, their face looks almost puzzle like. Just like Geras and his body
Liu Kang even made him look slightly more human than a construct
Seeing Geras talking collectively & calmly without busting anyone's heads is still new yet welcoming to me.
Geras become good guy,I guess everyone can switch side now
Geras is neither good or bad, he serves whomever is a keeper of time, and his actions would reflect their will.
(Not literally you lol)
Personally this is my favorite story since Deception.
"Geras, next slide."
If I had written the script:
Liu Kang: “The new era is unfolding as it should.”
Geras: (Puts down statue and turns to face him with a concerned frown) “About that…”
Liu Kang: “What is it? Is there a problem with the Hourglass?”
Geras: “The Hourglass is fine. The problem is with something it has shown me.”
Liu Kang: “What, Geras?”
Geras: “When you restarted history, you altered the destinies of certain malefactors to neutralize them. At least one of them is, as Johnny Cage would say, not sticking to the script: Shang Tsung.”

4:03-4:08 so Titans, deities who are more powerful and far superior to the Elder Gods, once they are killed are permadead. Let’s say Kronika dies in one timeline, does she cease to exist in every timeline she could possibly exist in?
Or Kronika could have several daughters that share her name and memories? I dunno this is legit confusing
I really like the character of Geras and I find his character pretty interesting. I hope we see more of him.
Im glad geras is on the good side instead of being a villian
Liu Kang and Geras they are like brothers
This is one of Liu Kang's shortcomings I think as the Keeper of Time; someone as crafty as Shang Tsung would have been safer kept as an ally rather than put in a life that would MAKE him crave for more. Granted even with rewrites there was always a chance of Shang Tsung's ambitions getting the better of him, but as an agent of Liu Kang himself, he'd also be in his direct supervision. Keep your enemies close and all that.
Get yourself a homie like Geras.
Accept it, you searched this to hear Kronika's theme remixed
They really did justice to geras in MK 1
11:06 this scene is always weird to me.
Because it’s one thing with all the heroes here (and even then it’s weird) but Quan Chi and Shang Tsung are within earshot why would you want them to overhear the fact that

Kronika considered Geras a tool, nothing more than a pawn.
Liu Kang considers Geras a friend, and is grateful for his aid.
It’s a huge pity that Kronkia could not be the villain again, though I understand some fans may not like her, but I think she would’ve been a damn playable character with her power or what’s left of it
