Also - if that opening montage of the other artists doesn't show how absolutely necessary punk rock was to the survival of popular music, I don't know what does.
I always thought that it wasn’t prog rock that caused punk, it was the tyranny of the BBC Radio 1 playlist and the appalling mess that Robin Nash was making of Top of the Pops. At the turn of the 70s R1 DJs were music lovers who played what they wanted and they weren’t scared to voice their opinions about the music they aired. The BBC become a light entertainment wasteland when things started to be over-managed, however, and pop acts were forced to conform to secure any exposure. In the album market and on the live circuit there was loads of great stuff happening in the UK in the mid-70s (Deaf School, Doctors of Madness, Dr Feelgood, etc) but you never saw any of it on the telly. Let’s not forget that the Feelgoods even had a No.1 album in the UK pre-punk.
You said that from the bowels of unuldaterated truth, like a tsunaml of much needed energy to wipe clear the mundane shyte, a damned anema to clear away the blocked bowels which was much needed, and thank the gods of rock n roll for clearing the dross down to where it belonged.
Yeah, yeah, blah, blah. It was just another form of rock n roll. It never had intentions to do what the media thought it was. 'Rumours' was a major hit in 1977 and Pink Floyd went from strength to strength, along with most other progressive bands. Punk didn't 'kill' anything as the claim goes. Punk was ideologically basically the same as Hippie, only 10 years on. I like Sex pistols, but I'm tired of the perpetuated nonsense that's become lore - like mandatory name-dropping The Stooges and MC5, as if no other bands ever existed
