She's one of those rare human beings who was just born cooler than everybody else. She's so cool I can't be jealous because she's so much fun.
Agreed!
No other like Poly 💗💗
You must have been real uncool at school to say this
@@CorleneGreenwood says the school child! Your brain can't think critically until you are 25!
See the documentary and find out how much "fun" she was having.

'Identity" is the consummate punk song. I used to play this song over and over in my teen years full tilt. All around me were my age group arguing over who was the best guitarist in their boring rock bands looking down their noses at the kind of pure energy X-Ray Spex blasted out. Absolute classic.
they were a seriously solid band with an unbelievably distinct female vocalist--who i honestly dont usually like...im harder and more picky. thers just no no debating them...(those guitar snobs would kill for that "face melting guitar tone) i know its not fair, but its what my ears crave...Polly, Penelope H. from Avengers being two from the late 70s, more recent were Red Aunts (all female but didnt flaunt it--they wanted to be liked because they were GOOD. punk was, especially us hardcore, dominated by rough, testosterone dripping undersexed boys and kinda always will be...but the real good punk the kind that has been overlooked since the 90s doesnt have a violent audience. the music is way better, too. that said, i totally agree...a classic sound, they had for sure. a few years back, a great female fronted band from the south named Brain F put out a slew of killer lps. the 90s boasted bands like Loli & the Chones put out two killer lps, Killawatts had dueling lead vocals male & female. i could go on, but ill spare ya
I'm still deaf!
@@DaveAnchovies "testosterone dripping undersexed boys" ?..How could they be both? Bit of a contradiction in terms going on there lol
@@mjh5437 No contradiction, I was a testosterone dripping undersexed boy back then. Desperate for it but not getting it. Which brings me to this which was regularly played on punk dance floors ua-cam.com/video/xXyT1vy3BII/v-deo.html&ab_channel=st0neagecows
One of the heaviest songs ever released. I bracket it with Ace of Spades and Whole Lotta Rosie for sheer in-your-face.
I once heard someone who said Poly "weaponized" her operatically trained voice. I find that description perfect.
I agree!!
She wasn’t actually operatically trained that was her playing with the media!
@@PHOENIXHOUSE137 haha yeah! It’s pretty funny all the times she did that
@TART 140 BPM Experimental ?
Nina Hagen
She had a hell of a voice.
Oh
The one and only Poly Styrene. RIP.
Rippy poly
so underrated. The brilliant Poly. RIP
..indeed..underrated to this day..the accidental visionary..a brilliant shooting star..I remember growing up that the first record was not easy to come by..it was really hard to sell records when they weren't available in record stores..in hindsight, I believe this was by design to minimize any potential cultural impact..RIP
No they are not mook.
Oh, here it is, the obligatory "underrated" comment.
She’s not “underrated” - she’s been long accepted and appreciated as a punk pioneer and visionary etc
Rest in peace, my dear Poly. You were a treasure.
Just brought tears to my eyes for some reason tonight. Just loved Poly Styrene songs😢
I have just discovered this band and my mind has been blown🤯🤯🤯. Her voice and the sax (in punk!) make for a very powerful and explosive listening experience. How I would have loved seeing them live!!
The band's anti-establishment ethos is still relevant to 21st century culture. Mari Elliot was Polystyrene for so many good reasons, and her dangerous courage an endless marvel. Love everything about what she represented, and her legacy to push public conscience to the limits.
We need this more than ever these days.
Just seen on the BBC show tonight a piece about her daughter reflecting on her Mum's Bipolar and Cancer. I had no idea and left the house to take my wife to work, in bits. Rest in peace dear lady. ❤️❤️❤️ So iconic of my adolescence. 😢
The documentary made by her daughter is on Sky Arts on Saturday night at 9 o’ clock
Saw it last night and when said she could not sleep thought bipolar as my sister has it. Very poignant.
I never knew her, just today saw a documentary of rock against racism, as sham69 joined too
Best punk song ever.
Why oh why can’t music be like this again? Super exciting and still totally original.
Coz it's crap?
Music has been dead generally for about 30 years now with the odd exception
@@geraldinewalls8914 u cant be serious 😐lmfao
@@layoramirez4993 ok name me some records as good as the ones recorded before about 1990. There just isn't any
it is, youre just missing it. its not fair to compare legendary band from the 70s to a younger band, but i see a comment like this and im thinking of great bands from the 21st century alone that "old punks" dont have time to seek out. i have nothing else, so i assure you theyre out there and have multiplied since the days it was rare to see female fronted punk bands.
She was quite underrated i think, generally. Poly Styrene and Ray Spex definitely have their punk credentials in order.
Oh, here it is, the obligatory "underrated" comment.
@@sirandrelefaedelinogeoh here it is, a talentless dude crapping on everything to be cool. Shut your yap, you whiny school girl.
Wow what a wonderful woman. Listed to her daughter this morning on the radio my heart goes out to this woman and her daughter .
We'll never forget you, Poly Styrene ♥️
This is true punk. Raw uet polished. All searching for our identity. All tryong not to be oppressed for who we are. This is the voice of Truth, of conscience. This is a voice that is vital and needs to be heard today and every day. May you continue to giveThe Establishment bloody hell in the afterlife Rest in power. Gone, but not forgotten.❤
Absolutely out of this world and a classic. 👍🏾💪🏾😁
They sound really great. A punk/new wave band that time forgot sadly.
Very first punk song that I ever bought. Absolute CLASS
"God Bless You Polly wherever you are."
Poly sums up culture in one song.
still very relevant today with all the social media posturing and bullying going on!! xx R.I.P polystyrene xx
40 years ahead of her time. If only we knew back then......
Some of us did. I bought all their singles and they still sound fantastic. She was the female Johnny Rotten.
She is AWESOME! My eyes and earsare fixed on her 😮😁
Fabulous stuff...1978..seems like yesterday..!!....But sadly 44years have gone...and taken so many with them......RIP Poly...!!!!
its still 78 in another time line :)
I saw X ray spex Birmingham England, rip Polly the Prophet ❤🏴🇮🇪🏴🏴
This clip was my first experience with this amazing, epic and underrated punk rock band. This band and their imagery is so distinct that it is like it came from another planet that is futuristic but heavily influenced by the culture of the 1950’s.
The documentary on poly is a must see! underrated talent
So powerful!Love it!♥️♥️♥️💖💖💖
❤
What a star❤
She and the band had so many awesome tracks..
Ooh, she was a big influence on me back then. RIP Poly/Marion.
we were all in love with her
god bless her soul
As a very middle-aged man, I've recently fallen in love with Poly.
RIP Poly. You were a true pioneer. Still vital and important today. And those Sax hooks… so sweet.
From (to date) the one and only punk rock album I've listened to from start to finish...not on a dare or a whim, but a desire to learn just WHAT could possibly have been behind that voice...
I love Poly to bits. Someone keeps saying she passed away. She's still very much alive to me
Yes it was such a great song in a very bad live when I was young x
brilliant, lyrics still very relevant
What a voice ! Wow!!!!!
Her voice is 🔥
🤔
Fantastic video & great song! Shot in & on butlers wharf London. Possibly the same studio where the pistols played the valentine 1976 gig! 👍👍👍
Wish I could have seen them!
She was another one who had a very awesome voice and bad ass sense of fashion tastes and I love their take on Punk especially putting the horns in there !!
The worlds only punk rocker to wear a CARDIGAN!. RIP Poly. Love you always.😒😒
She made the world what she needed it to be.
Queen of punk
Was never fortunate enough to see them live, wish I had.
BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL ALWAYS ❤️❤️❤️ ❤️❤️❤️ and so relevant even now!!! Thanks Polly xxxxxxx
Just found this and remembered how great it is. Thanks for posting.
She 's d kindof girl Whinehouse would have dug her voice is up there with the great QUEENS OF SOUL 😂 ONLY she'S totally anarchy TOte -ALY PUNK ❤ thku babe & u r missed.
My mum always listens to poly. And now so do I
i heard 2 seconds of one of her songs in a video and immediately had to listen to this. so glad i did this is amazing!!
Je t'aime poly pour toujours !!!
What a voice ❤
Happy Heavenly Birthday Marianne ❤️🕊️
First time hearing this band this song is sick
Check out the similarly powerful B-side Let's Submerge - both among my all-time faves.
Unbelievable!! We only realise just how special she was now.
Beautiful , astonishing.
Poly te amo este video tiene una esencia muy brutal .
The sad thing is that even to this day, people don't get just how influential Poly was to girl power. Whether they know it or not, all those Riot Grrrl bands of the 90's like Bikini Kill, L7, Babes in Toyland, etc owe a *HUGE* debt to Poly for kicking down the doors for them. I always hear people crediting Joan Jett for these things, and Joan did play a part in that, but to me Poly, along with Siouxsie, the Slits, and the Raincoats, was the real pioneer.
:)
It was uploaded on my birthday, I'm even happier!!
Just amazing.
She was so pretty - with an amazing figure and legs, yet she did nothing to sexualize herself because she was so against all that. Before she passed from cancer in her fifties, she was still an extraordinarily beautiful woman. RIP Sweet Poly (Marianne)🌷
I think she once said (in the seventies) that if they tried to sexualise her she’d shave her off, which she apparently did in John Lydon’s flat before a gig. One can only imagine what that scene was like!
@@punkoid76 That was before the Rock Against Racism concert ti protest white nationalists trying to co-opt the skinhead look.
@@Arjay82 my thoughts exactly
@@Arjay82 Not so. It's possible to admire someone - even physically - without sexualising them.
Yeah, despite her best efforts she was still gorgeous!
Simply brilliant!
She was such a beauty. Her and the gal from Bow Wow wow ❤❤
God bless you, Poly. Wherever U R.
Some interesting melodies going on inside of this music.
R.I.P poly 4 yrs today
I'm gonna start crying man!!! Go head baby!!!!

First heard this song off an imported copy of "Burning Ambitions"! (Poly was in fine company- that comp also had Buzzcocks, Wire, Stranglers, Generation X, Damned, Killing Joke, GBH, Exploited, Angelic Upstarts...)

63?
@@momeara7482 53 is possible, that's born 1968. In '78 he'd be young but old enough to hear shit on the radio. I was born in '73 so at age 9-10 I was already able to appreciate The Police, Duran Duran, Gary Numan, Human League, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Stevie Nicks.
I wasn't punk but I definitely liked my new wave.
Lyrics:
Identity...
Identity is the crisis can't you see
Identity identity
When you look in the mirror
Do you see yourself
Do you see yourself
On the T.V. screen
Do you see yourself in the magazine
When you see yourself
Does it make you scream
Identity is the crisis can't you see
Identity identity...
Identity is the crisis can't you see
Identity identity
When you look in the mirror
Do you smash it quick
Do you take the glass
And slash your wrists
Did you do it for fame
Did you do it in a fit
Did you do it before
You read about it
Identity is the crisis can't you see
Identity identity...YEAH!
absolutely great
Hands down best punk band in history
One of the best punk songs ever
I remember buying this a lifetime ago..
Like a lot of punks, Poly was religious (Sid Vicious was a Catholic, which was why he wrote the anti -abortion "bodies"); she was a Christian Scientist, which was why she refused chemotherapy for the cancer that ultimately killed her.
TF are you even talking about? She was a devotee of the Hare Krishna movement for decades and still was at the time of her death. She also didn't refuse treatment for her cancer.
I remember doing the Pogo to this and others at the youth club disco, being the oldest looking I’d go to the off licence to buy the lager or cider 🍺 damn we were hard 😂😂😂
the magic of uk's and/or london's late 70s early 80s at display here! same with freeez i.o.u., alongside others of course. just fascinating.
Brilliant!
Thank you Poly. Thank you so much
if you didn't break some furniture to this song, you're deaf
My neighbors start breaking their furniture to this song!
Pardon
Yugoslavia loves you
Wow- brilliant! RIP Poly. Now I know where Cyndi Lauper got her look and voice from
I see where Kathleen Hanna got her voice too.
Oh god...please don`t blame Poly for the likes of Cyndi bloody Lauper
Great Ear! 🥲
rocking and deep . masterful.
Vive les punks❤
A whole energy
🎉Thank you Poly!💞
One of my Favorit Album that i own...🥰
That looks like it was filmed at Butler's Wharf, when it was a run-down part of London.
Yeah, I reckon you must be right. Jubilee was shot round there too.
My favourite woman of all time
The late 70s brought us some very unique female artists like polystyrene and kate bush and a many more very underrated band xray spex
Excellent...
She's brilliant cool dress sense too
Feels like they may have been an influence on the B-52s
Just perfect❤️
When you dress like yer Nan and sound fucking awesome
lolol
Love her.
58 years old
And still have a schoolboy crush
