    Hey man, I did a road trip in August on my electric bike from the UK to Slovenia over the alps. It was epic, I couldn't be happier so there's some good news out there! I came away from that trip satisfied that electric bikes aren't coming or near or whatever else people keep putting in clickbait titles, they're here, they've arrived. I've put like 50 miles on my gas bike in the last year and 9300 on my Ribelle and honestly, the gas bike is just waiting in my garage for a good home to send it to.

      In my case they could easily solve my problem by allowing me to alter the software for the performance capabilities it has within it.
      I can buy the obd connector, and can open the zero program. That's what the dealer (well some of them) has. But they are extremely limited in what can be changed. If one could harness the actual power the battery possess it would be a holeshot monster. As far as parts go, I have needed none. Haven't had that awful experience yet 😂.

    I did a road trip recently around England on my Zero S. I covered 2,153 miles in 11 days and was in no particular hurry as I had several weeks off work. But over the course of those 11 days I spent 36 hours and 54 minutes charging (I checked on the pod-point app) with the charge tank fitted to my bike. As much as I love riding my Zero, I will not be buying another electric bike until I can get one with better range and CCS charging. I've been considering buying a Honda CB500X or a Suzuki V-Strom 650 to go touring on and just keeping the zero for commuting. The Energica Experia is a step in the right direction but it is far too expensive for most people. I just wish the the big 4 japanese manufacturers would actually pull their fingers out and start making electric bikes to give us consumers more choice.

    Energica are single handedly saving EV motorcycles atm, with the experia have so much realistic range and the ribella. Thats the sort of advancement zero should be leading with their market share. Instead they have stagnated and sitting still, but thanks to the PR machine and the press, they still appear at the front. Your comparison between the old DSR and DSR/X was actually very kind, considering the battery on the DSR/X is 17.3Kw and the DSR you had was 10Kw. So zero bikes are actually getting worse

      Energica maybe its the top but it can't lift the electric motorcycling all by itself. Its expensive, and for experienced riders.
      The "Energica inside" drivetrain for smaller commuters still its just a blanc announcement.
      We need all the brands to contribute and more electrics on the roads if we want to have some impact and change peoples minds.
      The market has flooded with Chinese brands and thankfully some Spain brands, but where are the Japanese (Honda, Yamaha, Susuki, Kawasaki) and the traditional companies? What about Koreans (Sym and Kymco)?
      Livewire got the memo and it's preparing commuters, BMW only targets the heavy and luxury market (BMW CE-04) 400cc equivalent and above.
      Ducati developed a racing bike, but no comment about mass production.

I would say that had Zero done more to fix the issues, probably wouldn't have a bad taste in your mouth, that's certainly how I felt. Their customer service was always kind and courteous, but they did not make up for what I felt were serious issues with the design. Lack of CCS on any bike going forward is a recipe to leave it in the past, especially when CCS becomes the norm. Great to see you back on the road! Also, we DO need more pizza.

It would be the ultimate lightweight fun bike to blast around on AND road trip on (albeit with lots of stops)... but they left out what made the first Livewire so good. Really like your content. You hit on something that many of us are really looking and waiting for - a smaller “dirt” type electric motorcycle with decent range and super fast charging. My first electric was a Segaway x260 which I quickly modified with a larger battery, new controller and actually got it street legal here in the US. Such a blast to ride, but still not what I was looking for. I just recently picked up a 2021 DSR and I absolutely love it. Most of my riding is on twisty forest service roads in the mountains, which the DSR is great for, however if I could find something in the middle in terms of weight with slightly more range and fast charging, I’d trade the Zero in a heartbeat. The DSR/X and Experia are just too heavy for my personal goals, but not everyone is looking for that. For those that are, a lighter weight bike with good range and fast charging would be a huge hit. Take the Stark Varg, add more range and DC fast charging and you’d have a winner. In the end everyone has different riding goals so pick the best electric you can today and just enjoy it because they are simply a blast to ride. (Now silently praying my new Zero doesn’t give me any problems 😄).

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  Рік тому

      Dude haha, as I was reading your comment, I was ready to reply "Stark Varg with DC charging" and then you said it 😂 Yep, that's what we're missing, and nobody wants to make it. The lightweight big with a medium sized battery but 30min fast charging. Everybody is so obsessed with range that we're ending up with huge, heavy batteries. As the charging speed improves, the need for range goes away.

    The algorithm threw your channel at me and I am glad it did. I have been riding bikes since 1981 and they went past being a passion a long time ago, into being an obsession. As a dyed in the wool petrol bike guy, I have not pulled the trigger on an electric machine yet. I am, however, not in any way against them and have ridden a couple which were a lot of fun.
    I also watch Marc Travels and he has peaked my interest a little but also confirmed to me that the time is still not yet right for me to make the switch. His life is full time riding and making UA-cam videos about it. This is a great life and I wish him all the best in it. I, like most people, do not have unlimited time to spend riding the bike and when I go on a trip then I very often want to cover more miles in a day than the electric bike is able to do. Or, if it can do it then it is going to take so much longer which is fine as a rest is a good thing but sitting outside a supermarket, drinking over priced coffee three or four times a day while the bike charges is not the kind of stop I may want to be doing.
    I like the honesty in your video, and am glad that you are not preaching whilst still putting your point across. I live in the Czech Republic and the price of a new Zero seems to be higher than the US Dollar figure you showed in your previous video I watched. I am also not convinced that the charging infrastructure here is good enough that I can assume it will always be working to make trips. The very fact I have even looked in to it shows I am interested and I do not frown on the day when I shall inevitably get one. In my version of the real world then an electric bike would be suffice for about 65% of the actual rides I go on but I am not ready to sacrifice the other 35% and they are far too expensive, as is electricity here just now, to splash the cash on a novelty.
    I wish you and electric bikes all the very best and look forward, with an open mind, to seeing where this all goes.

      Wow, thanks for the comment! I appreciate hearing your take on this topic. Which electric motorcycles have you ridden? Although Zeros aren't getting closer to replacing gas bikes, I feel like other electrics are. I don't think it'll take much longer for Energica to build something that will solve the long distance riding problem. Fortunately the charging infrastructure where you are looks amazing already, so it's only a matter of time!

      @@NewZeroland - thanks for the reply. After looking at your video I did search for a local Energica dealer but there are none in this country. I, of course, know of them and their bikes through their supply of the Moto E machines. I am in no doubt that the range issue shall be solved and relatively soon. I have less faith in the speed of them being able to develop the infrastructure required for mass adoption, in a timely manner. On paper we have a reasonable network in this country but I am not so confident about the percentage of chargers that may be working at any given time. It is all conjecture at this moment in time, however. For sure the next bike I buy will not be electric, as I am planning it for early 2023 and the Moto Guzzi Mandello V100 is looking like it shall fit the bill. The elapsed time between it and the next one shall allow the technology, and logistics, to have evolved many fold and who knows what shall happen then. As for the bikes I have ridden - the first was the Vectrix when it was launched a number of years back and I had it on test for a few hours. It was a real novelty then and of course the instant torque was impressive but it really was an impractical tool, unless you lived in a city which I do not. I also remember it being pretty heavy for what it was, and devilishly expensive. The second was more recent, being the KTM Freeride, which was an absolute blast. I did mainly ride it off road, on the moto cross track and had an absolute hoot with it. It was a road registered version and I did a few kilometres on it but it was a lot more enjoyable off road. There is no doubt that an electric bike can put a smile on the face for the time that it is being ridden. The EICMA show is about to happen in Milan, so I shall see what new releases may come out of that, and who knows something may be of interest. I believe CF Moto will showcase a new electric bike there but if it is a scooter or a bike I just do not know. We shall see.

    I love all your videos (content and the awesome presentation), and your videos made a contribution to me deciding to purchase a Zero (my initial SR).
    However, some balanced feedback for what it's worth. As you say in this video, people should listen to those with relevant experience on the bike. Most of your videos so far came from personal experience, and they were compelling. But lately, especially in the last video and continued in this one (and in one previous spec bashing), it felt like a continued rant without even seeing the bike, much less riding it. Specs matter, but ride and feel matter a lot more (like your SR/F video would attest).
    Even as a big fan of yours, I found your DSR/X video to be extremely negative *without even having seen the bike!* and the video was named *"DSR/X First impression"* - and this seemed like a rant about the company (yes, you do make theoretically valid points, but most of it is ranting about past bad experiences or the company). It put me off, and apparently others too. This video seems like another empty rant defending an rant. If you named your videos "Rants about Zero with no personal experience about the DSR/X", the content would be spot on.
    Everybody needs to course correct occasionally - I hope that you can consider some of the negative feedback as constructive and go back to more videos based on actual personal experience.

    Sam, your views on why you feel Zero has let the EV motorcycle community down is well understood. Like all things in life, we develop our feelings based on actual experience. Family, friends, jobs, and motorcycles are all colored by our own experiences. You had some pretty terrible experiences; I had none. I enjoyed my time with the 2017 DSR with Charge Tank I purchased used for 10.5k and rode it for 19 months and a few thousand miles. Took it on some light off-road adventures, but nothing like my pal Tucker and Mark did on their 1000-mile offroad excursion.
    I was keen to see the Experia, but was a bit put off by the 3.x kW level 2 charge input. Yes, it has level 3 DC to DC but in some whom I spoke with the 24kW really came down to 20kW. And the last 10% charge took them into limp mode. Just like Zero. The DSR/X just didn’t have the range I was hoping for or the faster charge times. In the US even buying the extra 6.xkW means I’d have to find an AC charger that outputs 13kWs.
    I have written an article for Web Bike World titled “Sorry I Have Gas” which is about my journey being an early adopter of two-wheel EV things and my return to gas. It’s currently in the hands of my editor. I compared the pricing and features of the Experia, DSR/X, and the Ducati Multistrada V4S and there is NO COMPARISON. The tech on the MS far ECLIPSES any EV street bike. Of course, there will be some who start to argue that the cost of fuel, filters, oil, etc. makes the cost of EV bikes less. I crunched the numbers and figured out that the amount of time I’d break even with an EV bike would be around the time I’d probably not be able to ride. I’m not 30 anymore.
    Because I’ve raced my entire life and trained track skills I’m a real bitch about suspension, brakes, and tire pressure. Just the suspension tech on the MS far surpasses anything on the Experia or DSR/X and that’s JUST the suspension features.
    Would I return to the EV world? In a heartbeat, but there are a few things I’d insist on which exist on my current bike. Am I concerned about the environment? Yes, I am. Enough to forgo the things I want to do before I can’t anymore? Nope.
    I enjoy your perspective, Sam. It’s balanced and in this world of haters, fanboyz and trolls your channel is refreshing.

    I hope standardized interchangeable batteries will be the future of E-motorcycles. I imagine it would work something like this: You drive to gas station or whatever and pay to open charging stations lock, take full ones out and put empty batteries in. I have read that Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha are working together on standardized interchangeable batteries.

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  Рік тому +2

      For city bikes that you hire per-hour, swappable batteries make a lot of sense. That's where Honda is marketing their new bikes. When it gets to long range riding, that doesn't work. The batteries would be so heavy that swapping them would require robots, and probably take longer than fast charging.. every service station would need a bunch of these batteries in stock, which means manufacturing a bunch of batteries (heavy environmental impact).. and the big question is, "who owns the batteries?" If I swapped mine out for another, if that mine now? Are we leasing the batteries? And from who? What if you swap one in that has problems? It's too complicated and makes more sense to focus on faster charging, in my opinion.

Especially since I’m living vicariously through your channel. 😁 I can really understand the feeling though as I have been considering selling my electric bicycle to buy a gas powered Honda Grom. I love my electric bike with 1800 watt peak power and killer range for an E Bicycle but I want more range. I think that’s what so many Zero riders want but they already bought the bike so they are emotionally and financially invested, so…🤬.

How you're feeling is how most people feel about electrics. Some things still aren't there yet, unless you make big sacrifices to change your life to work with electric. I felt ok doing that 6 years ago, because it was new and exciting technology.. but now electric should work with our lives. We shouldn't have to compromise! I support the Grom idea :)

    I have definitely had some less than stellar experiences with Zero and so I don't feel this crazy brand loyalty toward them. I also own two of them so I don't exactly believe that they're terrible either. For what it's worth, I really like your videos. I do think you have some bias against Zero but I can hardly say that that is unwarranted.
    Zero made their third generation platform significantly heavier than the Gen 2 bikes. I have about 2,000 miles on my SRS and about 7,000 on my DSR. Overall I prefer the riding experience that my SRS offers but it is super annoying that my DSR always outperforms it in terms of range. I am going to order an experiment with the taller windshield on my SRS to see if that makes a positive improvement. My guess is it will close that gap by 2 or 3%. I do like that my SRS has 6 kw charging as well as a full glove box. I finally got around to ordering the fast charger for my DSR but I will have to give up the glovebox
    I have to say on my end that I think Energicas are supremely cool. I can totally see myself going for an Experia in the next couple of years.... I do wish that they had a somewhat faster level 2 charger though....

      Hey thanks for the comment! This is the kinda real-world experience people need to hear, and I appreciate you sharing it. Hopefully all the small tweaks Zero is doing to their bikes is in preparation for bigger ones. I totally agree that Energica needs 6kW AC charging. Hopefully they sort that out in the next revision of the Experia, or in a future model. Really I hope they go with liquid-cooled battery packs! I give Zero a hard time about 2hr charges, but even a 1hr charge is too long, if we're being honest.

    I wonder if the fast charge, L2/L3, on Zero messes with the SOC and range numbers and balance. I'm on my second ZeroSR, 1st was 2018, this one is 2020. And so far the SOC and range are slightly off but within 10miles range. But both my SRs are L1 charge only so.....
    I went from gas to 1st Zero and back to gas too. Now back to Zero cause it is the best commuter I ever had including scooters. But that is where the greatness ends. For travel or long day rides, forget it, I'm sticking to gas. I'm gonna try to keep the 2020 SR as long as I can for commute duty and around town, and that is where it will be delegated to.
    I'm glad the Livewire has a new model with the battery pack as the structural part. That is what Zero needs to do to to get with the times. All modern bikes use the engine as part of the structure to keep weight down. The new Livewire weigh about same as the old SR with what looks like maybe the same range, but too soon to know real world numbers.
    I want a Energica and hope they will have a Experia version in a standard/naked that is lighter. This one of the main reason I like the old SR so much cause only 420ish pounds and simplicity.
    But for the foreseeable future I waiting on Aptera. Will get rid of my Miata and Ducati for the Aptera.

What's the electric equivalent of my tiny, inexpensive, super-reliable CBR250R that weighs 350 lbs, has a top speed 150 km/hr and a range of 300 kms on the highway? Tick....tick.....tick...I'm still waiting....for something even in the same neighbourhood for any of these parameters. We need the equivalent of Tesla to bring this one to market....I would even take a plug-in hybrid bike at this stage to make the switch.

      @NewZeroland  Рік тому

      Yeah!! I'm with ya. Right now the only similar bike would be an older (smaller) Zero SR, but without fast charging, there's no way of going long distances. People can even take 250cc's to the race track, but a 250cc electric equivalent is probably air-cooled, has no range, and won't charge fast enough to be useful. People have ridden around the world on postie bikes.. nothing electric can compare yet, and that needs to change soon! My hope is that by the time 2035 comes around and we're all forced to go electric, the move will be easy, because electrics will be ready.

    I started commuting my 20 clicks to work on a BMW C-Evo in 2019 - simply because the cats on my 2009 injection V2 ICE wouldn't get to work unti 5-10 clicks into the ride - meaning I was averaging 6-7 l /100 km on such short commutes. So far I clocked 45 kkm on that e-scooter (I call elBurrito because it is an edonkey ;-) ) w/o regret, which also means the CO2 break-even on battery production is around the corner. I still like my Zero for all of the trouble it's given me with being the least reliable of all my motorcycles and costing the most of all my motorcycles (yes I paid less and have not had a any downtime with my RSV4 with 25k miles on it). I still explain to people all the reasons they should consider an electric as a great second bike, I explain they're not meant for road trips and you should also keep a gas bike around for a road trip or for when the electric needs to go to the dealership for multiple months to be repaired.
    I explain that I knew what I was getting myself into and there are so many upsides and for so many reasons it's a great bike, 3 second 0-60 times, no engine heat, less than $1/100 miles, no maintenance...other than brakes, tires, belts, light bulbs, replacing the complicated throttle, battery, and charger within the first 3k miles.
    I like my Zero a lot but I'm still going to tell people everything I like and dislike about it and the company it came from. I truly wish I could be less critical of them. You know actually I'll give them more credit "it's not that they failed to learn from their mistakes, they just changed hands so many times, and all the people who learned from the mistakes left the company when that happened they had to keep making the same new mistakes over and over again. This is why it doesn't feel like they're learning from their mistakes."

      I'm looking forward to the future of electric motorcycles but I'm looking to Japan rather than California, maybe Suzuki will find another Ernst Degner for the electric motorcycle. My Zero is honestly my primary motorcycle just not for anything further than 50 miles away, it's inescapable that if you own an EV even if you use it 95% of the time you still practically need an ICE vehicle from time to time. We're still about 7 years away from that changing in my opinion though I'm very hopeful that solid state batteries are going to be a real game changer and sooner than expected.

  • @georgepelton5645
    @georgepelton5645 Рік тому

    I also would like to see more improvement in ZERO’s range and charging speeds. I think that motorcycles are a tough application for BEV powertrains, and it will be awhile before they can match gas bikes of any type. Long highway trips at 70-80 mph will be the toughest, and it may take future batteries with twice the energy density of today’s batteries to match gas touring bikes. In the meantime, I sure would like to see ZERO increase range as much as possible. Maybe 10-30% increase would be possible with: 1) structural battery pack to accommodate more cells without increasing overall weight, 2) next gen cells with more energy, and perhaps faster C-rate for charging, 3) more efficient motor and inverter, built as an integrated drive unit like Tesla Model 3 & Y, 4) aerodynamic improvements, tough to do for motorcycles, but there likely is some improvement possible. 5) lower rolling resistance from tires, brakes, and bearings. ZERO used to offer significant improvements with every new model year, but lately it seems to be “bold new colors” and new combinations of existing ZERO components, like the DSR/X. For now I really like my DSR, but I hope there will be better options to upgrade to in the future.

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  Рік тому

      Thanks for your input, George! That's exactly the problem.. they haven't built something to make you say "wow I'm trading in my DSR for that!" because your DSR gets the same range and can charge just as fast with a charge tank. Aero is a huge deal and I hope motorcycle companies try harder with those designs. That's extra range for free! I know naked and ADV bikes sell the most though, so nobody wants to take risks.

    A guy on UA-cam took his Livewire from Pasadena to Anaheim, 76 miles, mostly at over 80 mph, he used 60% of his battery a quick DC charge when he had lunch and he was away home again, so we know the Livewire will do around 100 motorway miles before needing a charge.

    Riding mixed roads including highway I get between 180km-200km. Without highway about 250km.
    So that is 2 hours of mixed riding and 3 hours of non-highway riding.
    I have the fast charger. I can do 20% to 80% in less than an hour. For me that is totally fine. If I ride 2 hours on the highway, I am exhausted. It would not be safe for me to continue without a break.
    I understand that there are people that like or need to ride more than 2 to 3 hours in one go. I am sure they exist. And for those people a zero is not a good option.
    But if you read some comments, it looks like everybody regularly needs to ride for more than 2 hours in one go without taking a break. I find that hard to believe.
    I don't know the actual number, but I would guess that +75% of riders do not ride that many times more than 2 to 3 hours without taking a break. I can not believe there are so many hardcore riders out there.
    So I think that the range limitations are still a problem for some people, but it cannot be that this is a majority.
    (The same applies to EV cars by the way. It looks sometimes that everybody does +1000km each weekend and they do not have time to stop for 20min after 4 hours of driving. I find that hard to believe too.)

    The thing no one is talking about is lithium batteries have not improved the way everyone just assumed and hoped for ten years ago. More range today simply means more battery which means more weight, space, and money. Add 100 lbs and get a few kWH battery for another 10-20 miles at speed. This is fake progress.
    I paid my dues and stuck my toe into the EV movement with a new Zero SR in 2015. Aside from going through three chargers the first year, it was that first Firmware update that ruined the motorcycle. As you said, it’s great until it isn’t and when failure happens you’re basically screwed.
    I sold mine the end of 2018 and haven’t paid much attention since. Reading up on them again this week I see the same old issues.

Push too hard and people might turn on them in a flash, damaging E-motorcycles more quickly rather than riders steadily choosing other brands over time like you did. In the case of California: the all-electric push feels like more of a necessity. A microcar built for cities can easily cross a continent just as quickly, if not as comfortably, as any other car, but a BEV with 100 miles of range, 7 kW AC and 80 kw DC charging would be extremely slow and painful to road trip. We can't move forward with the mentality that crappy in all areas but one is just fine. BEVs, ALL OF THEM, need to be able to completely replace ICE in every single situation, not just some or even most of the time. They can't be designed thinking they will be a second or third vehicle. Overall I agree on this: the DSR/X is not at the level we wanted since the range is not enough AND the difference with my "old" SR/F 2020 is also not enough to justify a new purchase. That doesn't means I'll move to Energica (for reasons I explained in a blog post), but I'll more certainly get a comfier seat for long trips and wait for a better DSR/X.
