  • The 7.5-cm Pak 40 was the most important German anti-tank gun in the Second World War. In this video we will take a closer look at the gun itself, some principles on employment of the gun, its capabilities and limitations as well. For this we look at the gun of the Panzermuseum Munster in Germany and also primary sources namely German Army Regulations, where it is actually called Panzerjägerkanone 40 not Panzerabwehrkanone (Pak) 40.
    Disclaimer: I was invited by the Panzermuseum Munster in 2020.

      Suggestion: i think that more unified colour schemes and positioning for notes and disclaimers would look better and more polished. In the beginning there was four boxes, three colours (four if the you count the two blues) and couple of fonts and sizes. If these were for example combined in one single box..? Just spitballing here, i'm not a professional, just a fan.
      Videos are awesome and informative, make no mistake about that. Also the logo's in the "visualized" portion clear and funny. Keep up the good work! :)

    To clarify the confusion between the designation Panzerabwehrkanone and Panzerjaegerkanone:
    After France Hitler wanted a more aggressive sounding name for the units, and therefore the units were first re-christened from "Panzer Abwehr" (defense) to "Panzer Jaeger" (hunters).
    The guns were subsequently renamed also, but the designation didn't change.
    I guess someone at the Heereswaffenamt thought that "PAK" sounded waaaaaay too cool to change just because of one of Herr Hitler's whims, lol.

    So anyway, in Finnish service PaK40 would end up being the most powerful anti-tank gun available and there would end up being 210 delivered from Germany.
    In usage, Finnish PaK40 gun crew would be composed of 15 men (13 + 2 drivers) and they would use most commonly Komsolets T-20 tractor which was not meant for towing such heavy guns. For longer road marches any kind of truck would had been used instead. Units were largely equipped with rifles with few units having Maxims or any other machine-guns for close-defense.
    In practice (in summer 1944 particular), guns would be operated by 7 men: 1 gunner/loader and others being around in case gunner/loader was killed and/or wounded in action by Soviet return fire (or rather the artillery) and in which case he was carried away and another man took his place. Rest of the unit would do other stuff: act as runners, man machine-guns or deliver ammunition.
    However as PaK40 was so heavy and Karelian forest being anything but open, there was large loss of these guns, not by enemy action but rather because they could not be moved. 60 guns would be lost with large number being just abandoned.
    Extra Trivia: PaK40 would actually stay in service until 1960s when it was finally replaced with bit more modern recoilless rifles and missiles. But not before there was some testing for new APDS ammunition. It was never mass produced however.

    Pretty good! Along with the "geschossringbuch" I could see that the pzgr 39 and pzgr 40 with their steel cores could do a penetration, and why. The pzgr 40 has a way smaller weight 4.15kg, compared to the pzgr 39 (7.6kg), the lighter shot creating way higher velocities for the same amound of gunpowder used in the cases (as can be seen in book "ringbuchhulsen").
    Really interesting the different sight charts written on the sight, and the amount of elevation that is needed to compensate for the drop at those distances.
    If there is ever a blueprint to be found on these guns, or any other guns, im a blueprint collector. So if anyone finds these, let me know. :)
    Greetings,
    Jeff

    Excellent video, thank you! Will you do a video on the Pak 36(r)? This was quite a special case, being a Soviet 76.2mm gun captured in large quantities by the Germans and rebuilt to fire German-made Pak 40 ammunition (with slight modifications to compensate for the slightly different calibre). In 1942-43 it was used as a stopgap measure until Pak 40 production was in full swing.

    • @bellator11
      @bellator11 3 роки тому

      It couldn't use Pak40 ammunition, it could merely fire modified versions of the 75mm PzGr39 projectiles (wider driving bands) if they were inserted into the russian spec shell casings. As such for a while the German industry produced a limited amount of this hybrid ammo (German projectile mated with Russian casing) for use with this gun.

    • @HerrGausF
      @HerrGausF 3 роки тому +1

      @@bellator11 Regrettably you are mistaken, the gun was definitely rechambered for Pak 40 cartridges or it would have been almost useless as an anti-tank gun. The only difference was the diameter of the driving bands. A white tip was painted onto the shells to prevent mixups. Perhaps you are confusing it with the FK 36(r), which was not rechambered and retained the lower velocity Soviet ammunition. Here's the German field manual, you'll find proof on the ammo diagrams on page 32 ff.: www.lexpev.nl/downloads/h.dv.48185.pdf

    to put its weight in perspective, a honda civic weighs about 1417kg. so... it weighs about as much as a car. thing is, cars have 4 wheels to spread the weight around, this thing has two. it'd be pretty rough to shift, but not impossible, and probably doable by two people with enough determination.

    Unregulated recoil can also drive the split trail into the ground, making it immobile. The Americans had that exact problem in the Bocage. It was worse in winter when they were driven into hard ground.

    If I'm not mistaken the penetration values of the pak 40 and zis-2 where similar enough. But I'm not well-informed about HE compared between pak40 and zis-3. Which of the two had better HE? Was there any major differences? It seems like the pak 40 had the best parts of the two soviet guns combined.

    I was surprised to see how small the PAK 40 actually is when I saw it in the museum myself. It must have been great to conceal. Considering how I freak out when radar control flash pops up on me, I don't dare to imagine how tankers must have felt when PAK flashed on them.
    Somewhere on youtube there is also a video of PAK 40 being fired by Americans. I don't know how representative the muzzle blast is, as they self loaded the cartridge but damn that's a demonstration of fire power.

    Difference between the Primary and Secondary Sources on Penetration could easily be the difference between a 0 degree angle and the 30 degree angles that the Primary (German) tested at. I wonder if the Secondary Source was from Allied Tests, such as happened in Normandy about a month after D-Day....

  • @petersouthernboy6327

    The L/48 cartridge cases were longer (and therefore "hotter" due to more propellant), and had a habit of failing to eject - even on the first shot. The Pak 40 had a semiautomatic breech. Instead of re-engineering the cartridge case, German Ordnance officials kept reducing the charge until the problem went away.
