That happened to me too moving from cali to utah and my dash went out but all you have to do is turn on and off your headlights a few times it worked for me too
God bless you , you just saved me $900. I was at the dealership and the guy told me the problem might be with the computer of the dashboard. He told me it might cost me $790 plus tax and workmanship might run up to $900. I was waiting for them to look at it when I decided to google and I stumbled on this video. I immediately took my car out of there, drove home and did exactly what your video said. It worked!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!
This fix is aiding the problem but it is not resolving the root cause. These cars have a known defective capacitor problem on the circuit board inside of the dash assembly. You must pull the entire dash out of the car and solder on a new capacitor to the board to permanently fix the problem. This is something that no lay person without experience can do. The soldering is tedious and you must be VERY careful or you will damage the board. I have fixed several of them with intermittent dash light issues this way. If you take it to the dealer, you will be looking at thousands to put a whole new dash assembly in the car. Removing the battery connection might "resolve" the issue when it happens, but I bet all of you that have had this problem, will see it again because you have not fixed the real issue. It's a capacitor that has defectively leaked down on the board inside the dash.
Chris Scott Mr. Chris, thaaaaaaanks for your help, please help me through the position of this capacitor because we have a lot of this model and no one could resolve it, this is very critical to us, pleeeeeeese help.
As a side note, you can leave one door open on your prius when u leave it alone and that will keep the odometer on when you come back. I either put some blanket on the trunk so it doesn't close completely or close the driver door halfway. You can still lock it using a key, it will stay on as long as u keep a door open.
THANK YOU, my Toyota Dealer always cleans my clock on repairs , I love the car, but I hate the repair costs. It destroys the cost effectiveness of the car !
Brilliant! Thanks! This happens once every 3-4 months on my Prius. It is great to know there is an easy remedy and I won't stop unexpectedly on the freeway. As noted in another comment, it isn't a permanent fix. But the permanent fix would cost more than the car is now worth, so this is great!
@@sandrawiley2339 if your car ever fails to turn off again, press the on'/off button and hold it down for up to 30 seconds. It will eventually do a forced shutoff. I speak from experience.
Man people are so negative. It may not “fix” the problem I agree but when I am driving to work 2.5 hours each way, in a 12 year old Prius with 225k on the dash, and my dash lights stop working after I fill up at the gas station, guess what, it fixes MY temporary root problem of getting to work on time so I don’t loose my job. I agree I can go pay tons of money to fix the root cause and DO appreciate people telling me what is causing it to continue to happen for the people who do want to fix that issue, and if I do that I can hope that maybe I’ll get my money’s worth or me personally I can realize that I will save that money for another commuter car when this one goes and take the temporary inconvenience of unplugging a stupid plug once every 3 months and not complain. Thanks guys for the video.
I really appreciate it! Every time I have this issue I would spend 10-20 restarting the car until turns back on. I think, as the car ages, this issue becomes more frequent. But with this method, now I know how to bring the damn dash back. Cheers!
Had a 2007 Prius with the same problem, Chris Scott knows what's up. I also wanted to mention that for ours it certainly seemed related to the weather and cold as well. If it rained or was cold my suspicion was condensation is affecting the connector (in the dash) for the combo meter. There was a recall for this but since the car was too old they stopped supporting this fix. Everything runs normally while like this, you just don't know how much gas in the tank or how fast you're going, but mainly the gas gauge blank was the only concern (who's speeding in a prius). After the car warmed up for a while, a restart or (force restart holding power 5 seconds) and turning it back on would usually come back.
True. I have a 2008 and have only experienced this when it is really cold: doesn't affect the car running, but don't know how fast you are going or how much gas you have in the car. The good news is that I have over 180,000 miles and the car runs great.
"Everything runs normally while like this, you just don't know how much gas in the tank or how fast you're going" This happened to me on day 2 of purchasing a used Prius! It's helpful to know this is a "thing" and not specific to my purchase.

This worked for me Thank you! I watched countless videos saying you have to hold a button after random things in succession none worked this was simple and quick thank you!
Thank you much for the video. It's good to know a second option for fixing. Before I attempted the battery plug fix on my 2008 Prius I read some of the comments (I appreciate you camera skills btw. :) and I saw @Bobby Smith comment. Holding the power button down for 10 seconds restored my dash lights. Steps I took: got into the vehicle > tossed key fob onto passenger seat > pushed in the brake peddle > held power button for a 10 count, then released. Lights came on and for some reason the emergency brake light was on (even though it wasn't engaged). I powered off vehicle then powered on vehicle and all lights work as expected. I should note I replaced the 6 year old 12v battery about 3 weeks ago. From the comments I don't think it's related, but thought I should mention. Thanks again for a great video!
Tore the heck out of the red terminal cover! It actually comes off fairly easy if you first unlatch the right side, lever it up a bit to unlatch the top latch, then back and left to get the left side latch
another easier fix is: open a door and sit for half a minute and then click on the hazards and sit for another minute and then turn the head lights on. This should bring the all the lights on but if it doesn't then pump the break hard, this should for sure (95%) bring the lights on. If the above doesn't work then instead of turning the head lights on.. hold the lights to high beams, this should work too. If all of the above don't work then keep the hatch open and driver side door open and try the above tips. This used to happen a lot when I kept any of the door open for say 5mins mind that I had a weaker 12v battery, at times it used to show 10.5-11.5 volts. I recently replaced the battery, I can reproduce the same problem if I immediately try to start the car after coming from somewhere and then letting the water coolant pump run after turning the car off. However, if I give some time after the pump runs then the car starts normally.
This does always work for me, I know immediately that the dash won't turn on if the door light isn't turning on np. But does anyone know exactly why this keeps happening and should I have it fixed?

This totally worked. I've had to do so much tinkering with my Prius over the last year, and I honestly believe this is not a capacitor issue. There's no way that a supposedly faulty capacitor only doesn't work for a short time, and suddenly works again due to the battery being reset. I've thought that the battery had needed to be reset, but I didn't know how to do it without spending 15 minutes removing the 12v battery (i've shaved down the time it takes me to 15 mins. max due to all of the trial and errors I've conducted on my Prius). I"m beginning to wonder if this is a heat issue. I seem to remember having this issue during another heat wave we had in California. I seem to experience the no dashboard lights when it is cold, but have no problem with the car starting and running: seems to happen when it is really cold. After I make a trip somewhere, they cut on without a problem. You do need to get a new cameraman.
It is worse in the winte, it's a cylonoy issue. Behind the dash. Common prius issue apparently. 😔😔
I've noticed it is worse in the winter too!
Thank you, saved me lots of headaches.
This worked perfectly. Thanks for posting this!
Thank you!
Why not just pop off the negative terminal? It requires a 10mm wrench, BUT is easier to do.
Second, if this problem keeps happening, would you suggest installing a SPST switch on the cable that you pulled out? Maybe even installing the switch for very easy access?
you don't want to add resistance into a circuit , cars nowadays are touchy when it comes to voltages
Thank you this video was such a help I had trouble this morning trying to get my car started from last night and I have a 2010 and I was charging it through the front battery by the engine and it wasn’t working the dashboard was not showing up. And I connected it to the battery in the trunk without having to pull out the plug because it’s a different set up but it worked like a charm and lit up and my car started and I was able to get to work thank you very much I need to change my battery. Lol
so is it a battery problem?
No display on da screen how it can be fix
Stopped watching at 2:08 because it took you too long to take of the cover to the positive terminal, re record this video after having rehearsed it. It will be better cuz this raw candid spontaneous filming thing didn’t go so well
My Prius shuts down whenever the abs light pops up. How do you fix that too. If it doesn't shut off, the steer becomes stiff. Can you help out
Did you figure out? I have the same problem. And I have brand new battery on back.
turn the car off and on should reset Toyota doesn't even know
My Prius 05 still get off dashboard light while I turn on the light! Do you know how to fix this ?
There should be a dial that you can turn up next to your steering wheel on the left hand side
Omg this happens to me and it was super scary thank you so much !

It worked for me thank you guys.
I did all of that, even change new battery and the dashboard come on but later turn off again. Any suggestions.......????
Dr.Phôsferrous PanAgLab Thanks...
Nice
it’s your combination meter, most toyota dealerships will fix it with little to no cost
I’m happy.
Thanks for the tip.
Just tried this but now my fuel gauge says it’s empty and I literally just filled it up...
Logan Norris lol it’s always empty when you disconnect battery and within a few mins it goes back. Bet you figured it out after you pressed send for this message ha
Fugitive A yeah haha I’m my defense it didn’t fix itself while idling tho...I had to start driving haha
Logan Norris yeah I just got a Prius and your right ! I noticed that too
Thanks a lot guys ... you made my day ... it worked perfectly ... 🙂❤️
Do you remember if your head lights able to turn on?
In pulging every hard and my both wires came out + I broke my tump nail and s
Other wire came out 2 is that okey ?
This could also fix an MFD failure, maybe? Good video, when you see someone else get to the battery it isn’t as intimidating.
Nice bandaid. Where's the fix to the actual problem?
Yeah this works for a few time or more, but those not fix the problem. What exactly is the problem?? That’s my question
im still waiting for that same answer.
It only works once, next time it all black out again, next time black again, do you have to keep doing that?
No any single light on dash 2007 prius
I charged my car with a portable battery pack for about 2 minutes and that has temporarily fix my problem at least for today
Thank you!!!! it worked great.
Thank you very much, I will try to fix my dash light. Hope it will work that way.
Worked for me!!! Thank you so much!
It was a miracle. It works
What are the chances of you getting shocked by that battery by doing this?
No chance
Gatorland Toyota in Gainesville, FL quoted me $850 on 09-27-18 to have this repaired on my 2008 Prius. Ouch!
Was having the same issue the reset worked for a little bit . My battery needed to be replaced , and ever since I put new battery in it will not reset . Any thoughts and how pricey of a fix this will be ?
Jon Beck this is a known issue with the Prius. Google it. A circuit board has to be replaced. It's about $700 parts and labor. Toyota has extended the warranty because of it. Try to see if you're still under warranty.
Well done you! It works 👏👏
thanks keep the good work
Thanks bro, you’re a hero
It worked for a little bit in my 2008 Toyota Prius but after I turned off the car it started having the same problem
I have no dash light no speedometer no fuel gauge no gear gauge the only light that comes on is the check engine light no VSC
And I have no miles counting on my hybrid screen and it's not telling me my fuel economy
Alternate title: How to mangle your battery cover and fix absolutely nothing.
Be gentle with your Prius man....
thank you for posting ....;)
Worked perfect for me thank you!
That doesn't fix the problem num nuts
Tell us genius how do you fix this problem
Thanks a lot!!! This work to me 😅😄😁
Thank u soooooo much dear......u make my day!!!!
I just fixed this problem by holding my start button for 10 sec and it reset. Try it out before you pull the battery.
That’s a good idea! Have you had any more issues with that sense?
@@SouthernSweetTia it fixes it at the same rate I believe that this video fixes it. it's not a fix to the actual problem. it's a temporary solution. Since I don't have any intention to pull the dash any time soon. I will use it till it works. Most people when they are getting in their car simply don't have time to pull this plug out. This worked for me and I don't know if it will fix it everytime. It just worked for me last time.
@@SouthernSweetTia Tia the problem has not come back yet. So far I have seen this problem on my car about once every 3 months. So in short, it will come back and I hope this works everytime until the dash just stops working.
This video saved my money
It worked! Thank you very much
