  • I had a problem with my old Merc 200 last time we were out. It tended to die under load. It really seemed fuel related but when I checked the fuel pump and carb they were fine.
It turned out one of the coils was open. It seemd strange as it idled fine, even with the open coil.
Replacing the coils, and plug wires seems to have it running pretty good again.

The manual says to make sure there's water up to the clamp bracket when running in a tank cuz the impeller is so high up.

I have a 1962 Johnson Seahorse, also white. Still runs nicely. Almost identical to the Johnson Seahorse that Brigitte Bardot owned back in early 60s during her summers boating on the French Riviera portion of the Mediterranean.

Your cowling is a 1961, but your drive shaft housing is a 1962. The steering yoke with that grease fitting as well as the extra spray plate suggests this was a 1962. What I'm saying is you might have a 1962 Merc 250 , 25HP with a 1961 cowling on it. OR your 1961 22HP Merc 200 might have parts with 1962 features which means it could be among the last 1961 models. My dad bought this motor new in 1962 so it is all original. Based on the SN (1457997) I'm pretty sure it is a late 1961 model. Still runs pretty good. Only get 5 or 6 hours a year.

Have you replaced the impeller on this motor? I have the same motor and I’m trying to figure out how to get that dang impeller out.

I have replaced the impeller a couple of times.
It's located in the upper half of the transmission casing so you need to remove the lower unit to get at it. Once the lower unit and transmission are removed you can see the retainer. It's a reverse thread so be wary.
I usually remove the powerhead too. It's been a few years since I last did it. I had to make a 4 tooth tool to remove the retainer.
