These are strange times. For all the “progress” enabled by our tech obsessions, we also exist in an odd technological epoch in which digital engineers madly crunch code to replicate the imperfections of ostensibly obsolete technologies-leading us back to embrace the technologies we thought digital had “fixed.”
T-Rex’s Replicator isn’t just a stompbox embodiment of this snake-eating-its-tail allegory. It’s a thoughtfully executed tape delay with digital tap tempo control designed with best-of-both-worlds intent. But the Replicator’s sound, personality, and essence are prevailingly old school, and that is a wonderful thing-even if it confounds those repelled by the expressive potential of pre-digital chaos.
Anyone who owns an Echoplex or Space Echo can tell you they fail as studies in space-efficiency. So T-Rex should be applauded for a tape delay design that’s not much bigger than an old Deluxe Memory Man. The Replicator might occupy a lot of room on your pedalboard, but at least it could plausibly fit on one. The Replicator also seems robust enough the survive the travels and travails of pedalboard life. The enclosure is heavy-gauge aluminum and steel. The recording and playback mechanism in enclosed in a steel housing that can be removed for service via six small hex bolts. Knobs and switches all feel exceptionally sturdy. Perhaps the only point of vulnerability is the comparatively brittle plastic that makes up the removable tape cartridge. (Replicator comes with a spare, and replacements can be purchased form authorized dealers for $25.)
The control set reflects and spans the evolution of echo units, from original tape delays to modern digital machines. The left vertical row includes control knobs for master volume (output level), chorus (which is essentially a digitally controlled vari-speed function), and the saturate control, which adjusts the level of the signal that hits the tape. The right vertical row is a conventional set of delay level, feedback, and delay time controls.

As a side note,I really like any demo you do.Always informative and thorough.Your guitar playing is always interesting and entertaining Thanks
Ordered because of this demo John. Excellent tones!
Can you get this weird effect where the delay never stops or gets even louder without playing anything?
Great review! John was totally catching Daniel Lanois vibes here.
Man, I love D.L.
This product sounds reasonably good.
I have got this in 2020 one of the last at a UK dealer; I find I don't need to go above about 9'clock on the delay level as in this video
Damn bruh you’re really up there w Daniel Lanois; more specifically the song Aquatica
Does every effect end up in a massive crescendo ?
Gah, why does this sound so good.
It's all just simply great equipment.
Would like to hear/see a comparison or "shootout" between this and the Fulltone SS Tape Echo.
it's apples and oranges because it's 1/8 inch cassette tape vs 1/4 inch mastering tape.
+arensel84 yes ans no - they are both Tape Delays. That's what matters
Sounds like some of the sounds Devin Townsend used on his "Ki" album
Just looked it up. Those album titles. Man. Respect. I am crying. hahahahahaha
That telecaster is awesome what kind is it.
A 1967 Fender Custom. Dimarzio in the bridge. old Parson White B bender installed.
Please a rigdown of John Bollinger!
tu foto de perfil es epica!!!!!!!!!
with that price I'd be scared to turn a knob or stomp a switch
I would chose a space case tape echo over this for hundreds less and no worries about cartridge replacement. if you want the lo-fi echo sound that is. otherwise, get a 1/4 inch tape echo like the echoplex, Roland, or fulltone units.
The space case is a hacked marantz PMD for 700, this is a completely new purposely manufactured unit for 900. They are really different things. The Trex is far more controllable and feature laden.
+Johnny Cab last I checked space case starts at $500 without the footswitch. the near identical fidelity and the fact you will save hundreds over the years because 1/8 inch cassette tape is easy and cheap to come by. trex should have used them. instead of passing on the savings, now you have to pay trex $30 bucks every time you need a new cartridge. they should have made this 1/4 inch mastering tape because they are charging fulltone, re208, echoplex prices.
They are not $500, try $650. Theres only on/off controllable by footswitch with them, which is an extra $125. They are not the same fidelity. They are very different things. The T-Rex is a traditional tape echo unit with modern features and control. The Space Case is more of an experimental lo-fi unit. Both are very cool, but not really comparable. The space case isn't even a manufactured unit, its a hacked (old) Marantz PMD.
+Johnny Cab even with the price increase of the space case from its inception(which is a good indicator that demand is high as there also is a wait list for them), there is no other true tape echo unit available to compare. these units both use 1/8 inch cassette tape and sound very similar, albeit the space case can produce longer, lower fidelity echos. don't believe me, look up youtubers showing these in action.
if you want the tape echo sound of all classic rock, you do not want a 1/8 inch tape delay. get a proper 1/4 inch tape echo. this trex echo will never compare in sound quality to the classic tape echos. it's like thinking a 4cyl can sound like a V8 engine!
riff at 4.30 sooo familiar what is it?
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Hey John,I never noticed how huge your hands are.Perhaps it's an illusion on video.
It's pretty cool, but the chorus shouldn't only affect the repeats. I had a friend that had an old tape delay with a chorus, that chorused the primary signal. So it basically was two pedals in one.
probably was a Roland 301 or higher space echo.
Sounds about right. It was 20+ years ago.
I was pretty impressed by the videos I saw of this at NAMM great review. I totally get the price....wish I could afford that.
Wait...this pedal self-oscillates?
I just bought a Replicator jr yesterday and yes, it definitely self oscillates!!
Id leave it on the dirty channel and drone off into the sunset.
Premier Guitar, can you do a rig rundown of Angus Young and/or AC/DC?
Despite this being a great concept. I can't say I have a lot of knowledge/confidence in the range of this unit they way its portrayed in this video. It seems every demo is this delayed crescendo overwhelming effect which is muddy and brutal. I would have liked to have heard our subtle and clean usage FIRST then go from there. For $900, why not a switchable stereo playback head where delays could auto-pan? Also, the guitar sound itself is very boomy, noisy, and buzzy. Lastly, would this be able to handle the full freq response of a line-level track? For now, I think I will stick with my Moog 500-series analog delays. This may come across as being a hater, not at all, I believe they are on the right track, they just have some adjustments to make, and produce a more formal/controlled video.
to me this is definitely not a gig pedal. It's too crazy, and I would also not want to put it on a surface that is shaking around all the time (pedalboard). And most of these sounds seem pretty much unusable.
I hope people know that just because you can make weird noises with the Replicator, that's not all it's good for.
It's pretty cool. But it sounds also pretty lo-fi, for such a steep price.
My friends 40 y.o. RE-201 sounds much cleaner than this, without any noticeable flutter :-O
RE-201 costs twice the price of this though. And as a 40 yo gear, is it cleaner really? And reliable?
@@DaviTrombela84 Absolutely. A well-maintained RE-201 with fresh tape hasn't got any noticeable flutter or drop-outs. He bought the device new in the late '70s and it still performs perfectly. But this T-Rex sounds a bit like a parody of a tape echo to me...
@@coldwar1977 Terrific!
a lot of folks like the lo fidelity and flutter though
adam crenshaw me!
Sorry liver. I need a new delay.
SOS all these peddles sound and do the same
This review seems so bumbling it's hard to say if it will really benefit TRex or not. The unit is amazing. But Premier Guitar, you should get a Premier Effects Junkie to demo units like this. Dude is a great guitar player and a great guy, but he obviously doesn't really "get it" when it comes to how you would use a pedal like this.
Dr. Claw
If you have almost a grand for an echo stomp box you have serious priority issues...or too much money...most likely both.
Sounds like shit for something that costs that much.
I don't see where that's musical at all, seems like every delay ends up cresting to the point of useless ness!
Can you really make Real music with this effect ! Nah ! Lol
