Overtones are among the most important sound exercises to do on saxophone. But many aspiring saxophone players encounter problems playing them. In this video I'm sharing tips and tricks that I found can help a lot on the way to master your overtones. These tips & tricks come from my own experiences with practicing overtones for the last 10 years or so as well as from teaching my students.

Thanks for the tip that it's not about the embouchure, I'm achieving clearer and more relaxed overtones now!

Thanks Thomas, this is a really helpful and well produced video. I've been struggling with the 2nd D overtones for several weeks now; it's not consistent, sometimes I manage it but other times it takes several attempts. Interesting that you consider it difficult. Great video, thanks again.

Great video. How about D3 the fourth overtone from low Bb. Any trick to achieve that? Thanks

Hi Ken, glad you liked the video! Unfortunately there’s not a great trick for the d‘‘‘ that I know of, but you can also play the d‘‘‘ as an overtone of g‘‘. This should be a bit easier than playing it right away as an overtone of bb!

Open the palm D key momentarily while hearing, and shaping your throat to sing, that high D

I'm having trouble with G#2 the second overtone from low C#... I'm currently able to get it by slurring from G2 as an overtone of C, but it is not very stable. Any help? I play alto. Thanks again for your very instructive videos.

Hi Nestor, hm one thought I'd have is to check if you have any problems with the low c# in general (meaning if the keys are properly sealing). If so, can you play the a half a step above the g# as an overtone of d'?

You might want to include the reason we play overtones.

Hi Robert, I thought about doing more of an intro to the whole topic, also what overtones are etc but since there are already a few other well done videos out here on UA-cam on this, I decided to do something that I didn’t find in the other videos and leave out what has been done already
