- It is very important to practice your overtones on the saxophone to play in the altissimo, play with your best tone, and have fun with jazz improvisation.
This video will help you practice your overtones to get you screaming in the high end of your sax, and playing with solid tone.
Randal Clark has toured and recorded with Jeff Lorber Fusion, and is a professor of saxophone at the University of Utah.

Your videos are so informative! Thanks for taking the time to produce them!
Well done Randal. Thanks for sharing!
Brings me back 50 years when Joe Allard worked the overtone thing with me.
Great lesson, easy to understand, and I can’t wait for my new cannonball big bell A5 to come in👍🏾
Excellent demonstration
Amazing! thanks Randal
Thanks so much for the tips.
Thank you very much. You helped me understand so much
Genial!!!
Gracias...
How many years have you spent on sax?I know how hard that is
Excelentissimo lesson, as always!
For tenor saxophone, is the approach the same as it is for the alto saxophone?
Am still practicing the alto saxophone approach given by you during my warm up; I do find it very beneficial in its entirety.
Thanks for your clear 👍, step-by-step explanation, Randal.
Yes. The approach is very similar. The only real difference is that the voicing will change due to the larger mouthpiece and range of the instrument.
Hi Randal, I am a fan of yours since I saw you play with the cannonball band. I can play in the altissimo range' some notes are inconsistent but I can get to them fairy easily, but still I cant go beyond the forth overtone (two octaves above). I can play the very high overtones but the fifth and sixth don't come out. What helped you get the overtones to the next level?
The higher you go the more narrow the slots are for those partials. It will just take more experimentation with re-orienting the oral cavity and tongue position. And also if your reed is a little soft it will make it more difficult.
You look like Will Arnett
Hi this is Aaliyah, how to make the adjustments in the mouth for overtones
Randall, is your Beechler one of the old custom? or the current modern ones? Greetings from Lima, Peru
I got it this one 2020. I do have an old one too. But like this one a lot.
I realize that the mouthpiece has little to do with it but, what are you using here? Kinda looks like an older Beecher.
Yes. It’s a beechler. Not particularly old. 6 years or so. Custom Belite 7
@@randalclarkmusic4333 I have one of those and love it. Although, I am not crazy about the plastic ligature. Do you have a recommendation? I am not a fan of the rovner style leather strap thingy.
Thank you
