The "No Console Required" slogan Xbox is trying to push seems to represent exactly what I think the suits at Microsoft seem to lack awareness of.
People got into Microsoft/Xbox gaming from the start FOR the console. Trying to sell a service while being baffled that the customers who signed on for the console seem to have no interest in Xbox after they try to pitch gaming without it: just makes it apparent to me that they don't understand what made them popular to begin with.
They are trying to predict the future and stay ahead of the curb is what this looks like to me I'd just argue it's not working and they need to backpedal 🤷♂️
It seems like they are doing the inverse of when the Xbox One was about to release. They talked about that as a console that replaced the other stuff you did with your TV. Now, it's a TV that replaced you xbox.
Or it's just one way to access the eco system, while also having the traditional console option as well.
It's just extra options...
@@JAmitch-qi7jz it’s cyclical: you don’t need the console so people don’t buy the console. People don’t buy the console so there’s no market presence. There’s no presence so Microsoft doesn’t try to market to people and go so far as to say: “You don’t need the console”
You think if the Xbox had the same market share as a Switch or PS5 they’d still act like you don’t need one?
I can't be the only one who doesn't want a cloud based future when it comes to gaming...
Your not. And the majority of gamers don't want 70 games dollars too but they know that nothing they say or do is gonna change the minds of people that are willing to spend 70 dollars for a game that was meant to be DLC on a console that has a chip that could be weaker than modern day vending machines 😅.
@@blackstar-genX straight up lol
A good amount of gamers don’t. Even people that don’t care about media preservation also just like collecting physical items.
You hit the nail on the head, 70$ became the norm because people kept buying games at that price.
Cloud Gaming, like VR, is niche af.
GeForce Now is the largest cloud gaming service out there and it struggles to keep a 20M subscriber count. That's the largest one, the rest are either on life support like Luna, or died pitiful deaths like Stadia.
Maybe one day it will become the norm, but rn Joe and Jane gamer couldn't care less about cloud gaming.
I want physical games. Not a cloud . It's just a way for companies to make more money.
Microsoft: Don't worry, we support physical games
Also Microsoft: You don't need a console 😂
Key word: support. Pretty sure Xbox is more interested in digital = subscription. but still support for physical. Nintendo is the best for physical.
@fq4580 so giving more options to folks to play games = scam.... ok kid lol
Didn't realize giving people options was bad. Sony and Nintendo have had a history of putting their service without needing a console. You really should know your history, Pony.
@@mikeuk666 Since some people probably didn't understand it, I'll write it again, Microsoft is currently abolishing physical games.
@fq4580 and?.... pc has been digital only for 15yrs with no issues ...
I don't get it, if a console life span is too short, it's sad. But if a console life span is too long, that's also sad?
Too short = low unit sales, no games
Too long = no new hardware
Literally the only idiots that complain about a generation being too long are those who must mindlessly consume.
"Specs are outdated" yeah it's nice if they innovate with a new system but ultimately none of this ever mattered to begin with.
So long as new games are coming then whats the fucking issue? Lol
@@HiddenSpaces23154I wholeheartedly agree with your statement.
Console lifespans should be a good solid 10 years.

Regarding your inquiry on how many people keep their Switch docked, I am one such person. That's not to say that I've never used it in handheld mode or anything, but as a disabled person with a bedside PC setup, it's just more convenient for me to keep it docked and hooked up to my monitor.
I use mine almost exclusively handheld, but recently have been playing docked a bit before bed.
In-bed gaming can be pretty great, right!
I never use my Switch in handheld mode. Docked only
Mine is docked pretty much always, and only gets used in handheld at the gym.
Mine is always docked, unless I'm out of town on a trip.
Regards to home theater, streaming cannot match the quality to physical 4k discs. Until then I need my physical media for my home theater!
That’s right
For now...the highest bitrate I've see for a 4K UHD Blu-Ray is 95.9 Mbps. I could see in a decade streaming services streaming 4K at 100Mbps which would go beyond 4K UHD Blu-Ray. Netflix 4K currently only goes up to 16Mbps.
@@davidsummers6700 Yea even regular 1080p blu-rays roughly have 3x more bitrate than 4K streaming. (then there is the benefits of no artifacting or potential crushed blacks)
@@davidsummers6700 But that does nothing to prevent buffering or the auto reduction in quality to avoid buffering
Not to mention the crazy internet requirements that some might not be able to access regardless of money simply due to location
Even with high-speed internet, having skips and glitches during every movie, TV show is just annoying.
Microsoft: Why do you need physical games when you don’t even have a console?
It's a fair question. You probably would buy a console if you felt you needed physical games.

I live in the Netherlands, i know only 2 shops that sell games.. that actually sell the Xbox consoles. there are many other shops that sell Switch and PS5 consoles.. maybe Microsoft needs to make better deals with shops here and other European countries if they want better sales.
I've seen similar in Singapore where the only dedicated game stores I've been to sell stuff for PlayStation and Nintendo, but not Xbox except for pre-owned games that were traded in. Instead, Xbox stuff here seem to be sold at big-box electronics stores like Challenger.
My introduction to Starfy was ‘The Legendary Starfy’ on the Nintendo DS back in the day and I really enjoyed it. I feel like Tose and Nintendo releasing a new Starfy game that was localized between regions could’ve been a nice title to release while we wait for the ‘Switch 2.’

I still use my OG switch every day, handheld on breaks at work, docked when I get home. I bought the thing back in April 2017 at an inflated 380 usd, and it was used. Best console I've ever owned.

I am using the Switch nearly totally as a console but it just feels good to know I just can take it with me when I want. (I did on a few rare occasions like business trips or family visits)

Still have launch switch. Have mostly used it in dock since getting a pro controller. Super useful as a handheld when travelling
I won my switch lite last December on my job. Ive just started getting into it. Fits perfectly with my PS5
Ooh! Similar experience for me, though in my case I started with an original Switch instead of a Switch Lite (because I wanted the external display support), and wasn't sure if I'd successfully get back into console gaming. Turns out I did, and later replaced it with a Switch OLED Model.
I’m very pleased with the length of the Switch gen. Do I want stronger hardware? Sure, but the Switch has proved its worth as a hybrid console again & again since 2017. I use mine daily for games that I’d otherwise skip in favor of Elden Ring on my Xbox. Gaming on the Switch fits seamlessly into those small chunks of time when I don’t have access to the tv or time to settle in for a long session.
My current switch is an OLED I bought when it launched in 2021, which means it’s… wait it’s three years old?! Time is not fair
I am surprised RedBox stuck around this long. It's much cheaper to rent a movie digitally than it was though one of those box's then you also had the hassle of returning a disc. With a digital rental, I have X amount of hours to watch it then it just vanishes from my library.
I always thought it was just holding out in my area because I live in a smaller town lol had no clue people everywhere else still rents those. It’s kind of sad to see them go, cause I thought they were a cool novelty in the late 2000s.
I think they stuck around because if you see the kiosk at the grocery store or gas station you rent a movie to watch when you get home. If physical media hasn’t been dying for the past 10 years it’s be thriving.
"Everything you need to play Concord"......except for the want to play Concord.
Exactly, it may have its appeal to overwatch players & or pvp players, but again its a clone of what is already out there and the other games are more refined. What is to give it a shot? Point, shoot, kill the other player, repeat.... Also, I think most already have there online game there still grinding. We only have so much time for all these live service games, look at suicide squad. 😅 Hope its not too soon.
@@lwolf1285 $40 for this game vs F2P for Overwatch. I don't see this game having lasting appeal and will be shocked if it has any appeal at all at launch.
@@lwolf1285 I look forward to the Xbots trying to talk about Concord and how terrible it looks having never played it also crying about Frag Punk......You know Frag Punk the Xbox game that sounds like exactly the same thing as Concord.
It would be great if console generations lasted longer. Systems are more expensive now. General public perception on the tech jump between new hardware has slowed down, and we are more welcoming towards smaller production games.
I've actually been hoping console generations would get longer.
Every 10 years would be good.
Games nowadays take more time and effort to make. It would also give a mid-gen refresh a better justification, like the PS5 Pro.
I agree. But for console gens to get longer, the market would have to expand, and it hasn't expanded for the past 20 years, despite there being 2 billion more people on the planet now than back in 2005. The reason a new console is released is because the old console is projected to fall in sales. The idea is for new hardware to rise in sales as the old hardware falls in sales. And since the market hasn't expanded, the time it takes for old hardware to rise and fall in sales has pretty much remained the same.
@@G360LIVE Feels like it's lack of interesting games more so than a lack of players, Switch is still rolling along in full swing despite approaching 8 years
With some of the big news out of the way, let's get into the quicker stuff.
Reminds me a couple years ago some lady at my local GameStop taking Redbox games to GameStop to sell. Likely using fill credit cards to rent them. That’s one big reason games went away from Redbox
I'm assuming you meant she likely used fake and/or stolen credit cards, but ouch. That somehow led me to picture someone borrowing books from a public library and then selling them without any indication that the books had already been withdrawn and removed from the public library system.
Edit: I imagine Redbox didn't have memberships to track customers in case they didn't return their rented discs, and probably only charged upon return.
@@kbhasi most likely used the credit cards you can buy at Walmart and fill. But stolen is a possibility too

I hate it when people buy switch special editions for their collection instead of using them as it was intended. Making it harder for others who actually want to use it to find one.
I get the feeling that collectors would also hate it when people buy up *limited edition collector's items* to use them, wear them down and scuff them up until the designs fade away and they break.
@@saintfayde4438They can cry about it, it's a product meant to be used. Nintendo aint selling it to look pretty, if they want to waste money on a display piece that's their problem, but most people who buy it will use the console for its intended purpose.

Same, quite wasteful in my humble opinion 🫤
I have had a day one switch and have exclusively used it handheld the whole time. It's needed new joycon and a back plate. But it's still running fine despite my lack of care. I've personally been impressed by the durability of the core unit.

I think it was the fact that chicken soup for the soul got liquidated. The puns are strong in that article.
Xbox is turning into stadia
Did you say the same for Sony?
Except that Xbox now owns Call of Duty, if Stadia would have had Call of Duty that would be a different story.
The real problem now is it doesn't even matter that Xbox has the most AAA studios of any publisher when gamers hate everything coming out of the AAA industry.
Dumb take when they are giving you more options....
Funny that google thought stadia would actually work without realizing you need decades of hardware and games to actually build consumer goodwill for a live service platform and ironic that microsoft is diverging from their hardware and software exclusivity now that they have decades of consumer goodwill. The former put the carriage in front of the horse and the latter is shooting the horse in the face.
Xbox goal is to be stadia, they just failed in xbox one...now tgey gradually doing it by brainwashing people in thinking physical isn't needed and the braindead xbots are the first victims and now they spreading it like a virus.
Wow, i bought mine 2 days after release and mostly play on handheld mode, crazy its been 7 years
Red box used to be a dollar or two and there was one a block away from me so it was so convenient and inexpensive for quite awhile
That’s weird because the NES came out in 1985 and we got games until ‘94….
I’m really hoping that the switch can finally beat the PS2 in lifetime sales
I still don't understand why Concord is called that.
As soon as I hear "Concord" my first thought is "failed supersonic plane project that bleed money the entire time and ended in a tragedy".
I doubt that's the 'immediate emotional color' you want to attach your game.
The plane was called Concorde (with an e), and there wasn't anything especially tragic about its end.
A concord is a state of agreement or unity, so it's probably in reference to the team-based nature of the game.
Still revolutionary...
Capable of speeds over two times the speed of sound and at altitudes up to 60,000 feet (18,290 m), Concorde could fly from London to New York and return in the time it took a conventional aircraft to go one way.
The Concorde significantly impacted British aviation by revolutionising supersonic travel and enhancing the UK's reputation in aerospace engineering. The Concorde, a joint venture between the UK and France, was a significant milestone in British aviation history.
I hate to break it to you but The Concorde was NOT a "failed supersonic plane" It flew for decades until it was so old that it cost more to fix than it did to just get rid of it.
Concord doesn't sound much better than the Xbox game that is EXACTLY the same, FRAG PUNK
It was a piece of runway debris that brought down the concorde.
My guess is that marketing wanted a name that sounds similar to "Fortnite".
I've had my Switch mostly since launch date. It was a Mario Odyssey special edition console. When I had first gotten the console I tried using it in handheld mode but the joycons are way too small and are not confortable to hold for long periods of time in my opinion. So it has stayed in its dock for about 95% of its life since, and play with a pro controller.
I recommend tabletop if you hate the joycons that much, that’s how I play in “handheld”
I ordered an aftermarket handle held controller that let you slide the screen in while feeling comfortable in your hands.. The joycons are too small for most men's hands, so yeah..
Remember guys, most of your favorite games aren’t even purely on disc, the disc is merely a license to download the rest of the game. As games get larger, less and less will be true physicals, unless a new media format releases to hold way more data.
what if i go rent a game at red box... and the machine is gone when i go back... do i get to keep the game???
Probably not. When Netflix ended disc's, people were surprised to find out they still had to return them. Licenses for rentals meant Netflix had to get them back, even if they were going to dump them.
They stopped game rentals 5 years ago unfortunately.

Really Redbox shut down to me is not a blow to physical media. The only blow to physical media is when Nintendo or Shout Factory stop producing them.
Redbox disappeared about 17 months ago from my Walmart (the last Redbox in the area) my friend had a movie rental from it, and the return box was removed. Redbox told them to keep it.
So I was certain that Redbox was dead as a company already, but apparently they are still around somewhere.

Launch OG switch here (as I stated in the poll comments). The only things I've done thus far were: new battery at about 3 years (used a ton in hand held mode and not constantly plugged in), when replacing the battery I also redid the thermal paste with arctic silver while it was open, new sticks for both joy cons in 2020 (and they are both clear shell now with a mini D pad on the left one), stock dock guts were put into that mini plastic shell one you can find off amazon. Not to mention I have a 1TB card in it too. Yes, I do enjoy my switch and use it a lot in hand held mode (thus the battery replacement). I really should order a new battery and replace it again. They are cheap and easily found on amazon.

During the ABK acquisition, many wouldn't believe that the CMA was clinging on the cloud gaming aspect of Microsoft's monopoly, but it looks to me that they might have been gotten wind of what Microsoft will end up with as their main revenue.
I wonder how many collectors are going to buy Redbox kiosks for their game or movie room. Definitely going to be a nostalgia piece in 10-15 years.
I could see that. Sort of like how people have their own arcade machines.

Jon’s marketing campaign for Emio is straight up Firefly Fun House. I love it! 🤩
My launch Switch has been docked since day one. I only played in handheld mode just once, when my friend was watching something on the tv.
My Switch is also a launch Switch (ended up going to the midnight release and walking three miles home with it). I mainly keep it in the dock, but I like the option for handheld for when I'm on a plane or a lunch break.
I live in a small town with three Redbox terminals -- which were turned off in May.
Sad. I did enjoy occasionally perusing their (limited) selection and on one or two occasions actually renting a title to watch.

Here’s something interesting about Redbox. In my area the kiosks had a piece of paper on it stating that the kiosk will not do any more rentals on a date last May which did make me wonder what was going on. Now I do.
Having demos/betas locked behind a preorder has to be the worst marketing strategy. Most craft breweries let you sample the beers before you decide on one
I'm using a launch Switch. The top frame at the vent is a bit busted and the fan is starting to sound louder but it seems to run great.
I continue to feel for the Concord developers.
it feels crazy that the switch still costs the same price it did when it first released almost a decade ago
Maybe the switch life cycle is longer than usual because of how short the Wii U was. Nintendo probably planned for the switch to come out later than 2017 but were forced to release it to redeem themselves.
I have used my switch docked most of the time. But when i was a truck driver i used it handheld for a bit. I have the oled model now. I miss my ot model i should have modified it
I used to love using my Switch in handheld mode, but it's stuck in the dock now because the joycon rail messed up. I ain't paying to get that fixed.
Two Switch on my home and both in use, one 2017 launch model and the other a launch OLED model. We enjoy very much playing together or by our own. I really want the next Switch to come to home too.
The craziest thing is that Nintendo never cut the Switch's price during all these years.
Thank you for uploading everyday reliable gaming news and happy Friday!!
I have a launch switch. Only just a month ago got a second pair of joycons. Decided to finally get some new colors. The thing runs just fine, I had to replace the backing once because I dropped it but no actual issues.
I still use my day 1 March 3rd Switch but it is definitely NOT the same as it was. I’m on my third set of joycons and a couple of years ago it started overheating and shutting down after roughly 1 hour of docked gameplay. My roommate actually fixed it for me by changing out the fan and applying new thermal paste which crazily enough only set me back half the price of a set of joycons.
Why is browsing through the Eshop so laggy and slow?
Down to the software and it not being able to buffer correctly
Not app based like previous systems. Never bothered to clean it up over the years
The Wii Eshop and Wii U EShop should have been the standard for Nintendo, but now it seems they don't care anymore..@Matanumi
It's very slow and laggy.. I just accessed the Switch eShop from my phone since it's faster and doesn't lag..

Have fun John. Hope you enjoy Concord. I'll be checking it out as well.
So sad as I too remember having really fun outings to rent from Redbox, what a shame
But at least it's still around for Japan at Tsutaya to rent physical media 👍🏼
I docked my Switch once. It was to quickly try the pointer control for Metroid Prime, cause why not ? The console stayed dock to 100% completion.
Why is anyone suprised by the length of the switch life? We heard they wanted it to be a 10 year console in its first 2 years, and everyone was nodding like bobbleheads.
Concord’s logo makes it look like a business software suite or something.
Sony must've thought Concord copies would just fly off the shelves (psn shelves?) but then realised "oh... people aren't pre-ordering as many copies as we predicted... let's just make the beta more accessible it may bring in a few more sales".
Its probably flying off the shelves as well as FRAG PUNK the Xbox version of Concord...
I have way too many Switch systems... never owned a Lite... that Zelda gold Switch Lite looks real nice ngl, but I am not picking that up... I am not made of money *falls apart in a pile of dollar bills*
I've had my switch since launch. I've only ever used it in handheld like twice ever. It's a great home console.
I’ve only had my switch OLED 8 months and I’m absolutely having a blast with, I just wish I got it sooner, like a couple of years ago when it came out.
I think I could count - on one hand! - the number of days my Switch has been docked. I love the handheld nature, and I love how easily the Joycons fit in my hands.
I got my switch when i was in 7th grade in 2018 and i still play it to this day
So nintendo didn't do anything and brought Starfy over, but won't do the same for Mother 3?
It's probably the non-binary Magypsy characters. Too chicken shit to risk their image. Not sure how but whatever. That's what the ROM translation is for I guess.
I would greatly enjoy having my own Redbox machine for my personal DVD and Blu-ray collection. If only they could open source the kiosks.
My Switch hasn't been in the dock the entire time... Just about 99% of it. It's easier to change the carts when I pick it up!
Long Live physical! The problem with physical media though is with all the updates we get pushed all the time, downloads, etc., what you buy originally is not even close to what the game ends up being. If you delete, then reinstall your game 5+ years later, you will never have that experience again because the final version of the game will never be available again. So your disc/card becomes a paperweight.
Goes quadruple for discs where the only thing on them is a few megabytes of a download code.
Which is why a lot of physical games are pointless
I had to vote 2 years in the poll since I'm currently using my OLED, but I do still have and occasionally use my launch day Switch that I waited in line for at Target. I have a Switch Lite that I got to play Monster Hunter with my girlfriend. She has the Tears of the Kingdom OLED. We are the problem.
My switch collects dust most of the time.
If games are taking longer to make them console generations should be longer as well.
My OLED is my first and only Switch console. I mostly play in docked mode and watch UA-cam in handheld.
Still using my launch Switch. Battery is down to about 60% but I always play on the dock any more.
I started with the Lite.. Later upgraded to Oled when it dropped and very happy with that decision..
Chicken Soup for the Soul owned Red Box? 🤯🤯🤯
Thanks for the heads up. I just pre-ordered the Zelda Nintendo switch picked up two of them.
