Freedom to do what you want. I admire it. I follow stupid social rules every day that dont help my mental health at all.
The art is in the interactions, I appreciate that she is dressed so provocatively yet can still sometimes find common ground within the extremestis and protesters from any side. Her not having a clear vocal stance on the politics oddly is helpful in creating the interactions that provoke thoughts, more dialouge, and is equally fustrating for the people wanting to defend their opinions against their perceived opinions she has when she doesn't clearly take a side on anything she performs at while paradoxically dressing like she does. Her stages are protests, and she is out in the streets with no control over what her performance will be. People are just as unpredictable as her at these events, no matter how loud they dress or yell. She is actually more predictable than the crowd and does the song and dance with the cops pretty well, but definitely pokes the bear. She isn't going to let the cops not be equal part in her craft, which is the interactions and dynamics of crowd control, and keeping the peace while having the freedom to dress and speak freely. Her craft would benefit from artistic critiuques from other street performance artists to fine-tune things as she and her friends/team grow in popularity to be platformed the way they have earned. I truly believe we need people like Barney to exist and to be carrying on the craft of street performance art as one of the greatest things about the culture of NYC are provocatours like Barney. She is not the first, and may she not be the last.
This lady is the definition of free. She does what she want when she wants and she doesn't give two fucks what people think about her. She's liberated.

There's a place where liberated people are free to go to and yell and scream, curse and have any emotion they want to. It's called hell. The proud resist God and the humble accept Him. No friend there isn't a Jesus that says peace and love and as long as you don't hurt anyone its alright. Jesus is the most terrifying being in the universe. He is the one that says "depart from me you worker of inquity I never knew you."
I live in Minneapolis and watched her on livestreams during the George Floyd protests. I remember her crawling on the ground in a Trump mask and a diaper in front of a bunch of cops; it was dark, the whole scene lit up with headlights on the road. It was so absurd. And then suddenly, the cops stepped forward and surrounded her, and she was gone. The visual of the cops consuming this harmless clown was SO scary and effective, and very radicalizing for me. I love her and will support her always. I never understood performance art until her. Barney forever!!

I’ve been a fan of Barney for awhile now. I remember seeing her doing performance art on the street in BK for the first time in 2016, and then when she popped up on insta, I remembered her. Very cool to see how much traction she’s gotten the last few years.

The NYC street performer scene is cringeworthy at first but when you see the effort they put into method acting so consistently it makes you appreciate the performance art of it. The interactions with the public, the cast of characters and how well they blend and contrast parody into every day situations is really interesting.

Keep that same energy up for like twenty years, maybe then it becomes something you know? Artists everywhere looking for exposure. Artists everywhere looking for a development deal. What might put this over the top into the next level is some serious management, serious planning, serious long term and short term goals. Now does that align with her personal idiosyncracies? I dunno I don't know her, but it's that perception perhaps getting in the way.
