    I think the reason they went away from doing fantastical environments is because SA1 has a realistic art style. Because of this, they used textures that are just photos of real life objects and materials. Making more fantastical environments would require them to make a lot of custom textures.
    Making fantastical environments look realistic is very difficult in general

      I think so aswell but it confuses me. Why would they have that original idea then switch to the fantasy level then back to the original concept

      that explains why windly valley was always "that one stage" to me. ever since i was a kid i always thought it was weird, as if the stage didn't belong there. think about it, I may not remember perfectly but, in the hud worlds, every stage had a "gate", and they made sense, they al made sense.. except windy valley. you are a in a jungle, all nice, filled with trees, ruins, etc, all cool, then you just touch a... cloudy elevator thing, and you end up in... in what? a big... floating.... windy.. REALM??? because that's what it fucking looks like, another place, it already fantasy-like as it is, I'm talking about the final version. ice cap, lost world, sand ruins, they all made sense - except windy valley

    The Dreamcast was not created just for Sonic Adventure, SEGA was already developing the console while Sonic Team worked on the Saturn Sonic Adventure, but they decided to go to the next-gen console once they realized they could get more things they wanted (and they had to wait for the console to be ready to fully start working on the game, so in the time it was not ready they had to do other things for the game lol)
    And they didn't really hired Uekawa for Adventure, Uekawa already worked at SEGA, he was the character designer in Ristar, way back in 1994, and the thing for Sonic's redesign in SA1 was actually a competition beetween artists to see who would redesign them, just like the competitions we had in the classic era where we had a lot of artists concepting SEGA's mascot (which Sonic won), his side-kick (which Tails won), etc. And obviously, as we know, Uekawa won the competition to redesign them

    Actully from what I remember, the idle audios are used in the game, like for link's idle animation in botw you just need to wait a long time. Not only that but there's 2 idle dialogs : the default one (for sonic it's "better get going")and a zone specific one.
    That's why you'll never normally hear the "he can't be invincible can he?" As it's meant to play in the fight against chaos 0 but you'll probably get hurt before the audio plays.
    There's a mod for sadx "idle chatter" I think it's called, who plays the idle audio by the press of a button, so by spamming a little said button you can hear the because it's obviously easier to listen to the idle audio of sration square compared to chaos 4's, as standing idle means death in this situation.

    Sonic Adventure's development is an interesting topic. The game is very impressive and almost saved the Dreamcast!
    Another thing I recently learned is,Sonic in his adventure/modern design has Green eyes...to reference Green Hill Zone.
    It turns out that Sonic Adventure had DLC,such as Halloween dlc and christmas dlc. That is very interesting and a lot of people don't know about that.
    The game was created in just 16 months,and it is to this day one of the most impressive video games of all time.
    Sonic Adventure is deffinetly one or my favorite Sonic games.
    I am happy that you covered the development of this game!

      @@shaulov10 Yeah,I can see why you needed to cut some stuff out. Also,if you ever get the chance,you should cover the betas,unused content,and development of Sonic 2! The game was going to be much larger,the story was going to be about time travel,like you would go through the island,and then you would make it to a warp point,which would warp you to the past(so,time travel was never ment to be in game,but only in the story),for example,Hill Top Zone was going to be the past version of Emerald Hill Zone,and Wood Zone was the present version of Casino Night Zone. There are also a bunch of concept arts for the game,and there is so much!
      It would be an interesting video!

      @@shaulov10 Actually,no. It turns out Sonic Team got split. One in North America,and one staying back in Japan. The japanese team worked on Sonic CD,while the North American Team worked on Sonic 2. The tome travel thing for both games is just a coincidence.

    This stuff is all really interesting to look at, especially prototype Windy Valley and the Saturn prototypes, it's weird to imagine what the game could have been had we had it in the Saturn still with the classic designs and stuff
    Compared to Forces and Frontiers, this is pretty close to the concepts and the original ideas that got drastically changed in the final product were for the better (like making it a Modern game in the Dreamcast)

    Keep in mind that Sonic Team began developing it for the Saturn in April 1997, with a 20-member team. However, development was already moved to the Dreamcast by July 1997, meaning only 3 months at most were spent on the Saturn hardware. As a result, there really would not have been much of a leftover from the Saturn version.

      We have part of the Saturn version, the video isn’t well researched. Sonic Team said the 3D section of Sonic Jam was born out of an unfinished SA1 build for the Saturn.

    I wouldn't say we hate the series , were just tired of being chronically disappointed.
    Sega is like that bad date that swears they've changed , and they did.
    But they never change what lead to breaking up , or quitting Sonic , in the first place.
    This is my second time quitting Sonic , and I'm actually happy.

      @@shaulov10 I'd say it does. CD and SegaSonic were the only times before Adventure where they weren't running into technical limitations with adding in voice lines. (The Saturn could have handled it, but Jam was the only Sonic game on that console not developed by a third party)
      Generations and Forces are the only times where Classic Sonic's canonically mute, with him canonically speaking after those games (IDW comics) and semi-canonically before (SegaSonic and CD)
      In addition, I'd say it's safe to assume that they were going to have voice acting by the point the project was Sonic RPG, which was before the Adventure redesigns were made (As can be seen by the footage we have of Sonic RPG using a unique model of Classic Sonic where the eyes are modeled instead of just being a flat texture on his face)

    Beta Windy Valley feels like the goal they wanted to make, but ambitious were quite ahead at the end.
    Just by the name "adventure" and the first Sonic in 3-D i think they wanted to make something like we had in Crash Twinsanity.
    A stage mostly open to go wherever you want but there is a defined goal at the end of the road in which you progress story but at your free will, there are colectables around and why not, even a backtracking element due to Sonic's multiple pathways levels.
    So, as Windy Valley, maybe pretty much every level in Sonic Adventure could have been meant to be just as that kind of open world style.

    nah i think the reason why they scraped windy valley beta is because it was way open, so the game had to show way more textures than the final version, making the fps drops,compared to others stages. I don't think that would be a huge problem on today's moderns platforms, but it was on your og dreamcast

    Yeah Mystic Ruins was already kinda creepy to me as a kid.(Getting lost in the jungle while playing with the lights off at night made me nervous.) The loading music would’ve made me pee myself

    The reason SA1 moved to the Dreamcast is not actually because the Saturn wasn’t powerful enough. It was because Sonic Team started on the Saturn, but were then told SEGA was moving on to a new system and decided it would make more sense to develop this game for the launch of the new system rather than finishing their work on the Saturn. So the Saturn could have ran whatever they were working on (as seen by the Sonic World in Sonic Jam which runs incredibly smoothly) they just didn’t want their work to go to waste on a dying system.

    You do realise that Sonic changed his design like mid-way through Dreamcast development? There's still icons in the game with a Dreamcast model but he's a lighter blue with black eyes and he isnt as lanky and is shorter. TBH I would've loved to see that design in game as a playable character along with all the others.

    Sonic Team didn't go to "South America", well, they went to Chichen Itzá which is actually in North America, and also Guatemala to Tikal. On another note, they're not "Aztec" ruins, it's Mayan. Sorry for being "that guy", but just wanted to point that out.

    Describing the final version of Windy Valley as "realistic" is uh... Way off the mark. There's not a single thing about the stage that is even remotely realistic. Islands floating in midair connected by bridges, air currents that you can run on, mysterious bridges of metal bent into loops, floating windmills, etc. It's very fantasy-like and disconnected from reality in and of itself, the beta version just leaned into that aspect a bit harder.

    niiice, interesting, very interesting. adventure is definitely THE sonic game, it's so special...
    super sonic whoa, interesting
    transition music... didn't like them, and I am someone who is passionate about music, especially adventure 1's. those music just feel off, they don't feel "adventure" to me. I have to ask, who composed them?? it caught my ears' attention. they feel like they follow a different musical, esthetical philosophy. I don't like them for reasons stated, but, either way, thank you for sharing them, never heard them before, it was my favourite stuff. I said I care about the musical aspect lol

      it was jun senoue who composed the music for this game but there were more aswell like Fumie kumatani

      @@shaulov10 ahh, I see.. well also I didn't think it that much, it's not like there weren't any "weird" similar tracks in the games already hehe (like the game over theme.. or I think it was the continue screen?), but yeah, the mystic ruins one is surprisingly scary ah

    Sonic jam sonic world could have been sonic adventure. 😊adventure was the beginning of sonics downfall by trying to reinvent the wheel. Big fishing, treasure hunt knuckles, gamma shooter… yuk
