The developers actually confirmed the Little Planet theme is R2. Also, the Psyco Egg's misspelling of the word "psycho" could be Gundam related. There is a mobile suit in Zeta Gundam called the Psyco Gundam, where Psyco is short for Psycommu, a type of system that allows people with psychic powers, who are called newtypes, to control machines telepathically. The Psyco Egg might have a Psycommu.
There are also Mecha references in other Sonic game,s Soinc 2 having a Scopedog reference and the Metal Sonic in Sonic Adventure that's a Kiryu/Mecha Godzilla reference.
Amy's origin came from the manga published by Shogakukan, where a hedgehog nerd boy named Nicky had the ability to transform into Sonic when things started to get troubled Initially Amy was supposed to be "Sonic's Minnie Mouse" but it didn't felt right for Sonic to be diving in romance like that, that's just not the kind of guy Sonic is, he's very closed about his feelings and isn't openly flirty and romantic, so they made their dynamic with Amy being in love with him, being flirty, and showing that love of her, while Sonic, being the way he is, doesn't care about that romantic stuff (doesn't mean he doesn't recipricate it, it's just not his style) And, ermm... actually, the robot in Sonic 2 is actually also called Mecha Sonic just like the one in Sonic 3 & Knuckles ☝️🤓 And it wasn't Ohshima who confirmed that R2 was called Dubious Depths, it was "Mazin"/Masato Nishimura Ohshima had confirmed that the level was called "Ridicule Root" and then people asked to Nishimura in which he responded that what Ohshima said was right and another name for the level was Dubious Depths And the fans didn't swap 2R for R2, internally, Sonic CD labels its levels as "Rounds", Palmtree Panic is Round 1, Collision Chaos is "Round 3", etc. And in some sections of the game internally the stages are refered as "R1", "R2", "R3" "R4", etc. The D.A. I find it funny that you kept refering to the antlion enemy as a beetle when everything about their design, name and their credits animation tells you they'd behave like an antlion. This was a really cool video. Thanks for taking your time putting it together!
I believe the fans got R2 from looking at the files of an old pc port of cd. Also it makes more sense, since in this game Acts are named Zones, and Zones are named Rounds, which makes Dubious Depths "Round 2"
i believe that the concept art with rainbow waterfalls was originally shown in a youtube video for the release of the christian whitehead port, which means that it was shown far before sonic origins.
8:10 one thing that can back up the: "not enough storage for another level" theory is how some of the sprites from r2 aren't there. (I mean the other eggman boss sprites because obviously there has to be more then just one sprite for the boss, or they were making the eggman sprite a little bit before they cut the level and they were only able to make that single eggman sprite before they decided to cut the entire level.)
@@shaulov10the more storage that a CD offers was used to add all of the redbook audio in sonic CD (being the tracks for the present, good future and bad future)
“Egg man sitting in the president’s chair” Hmm, here’s my theory. Sonic CD was originally meant to be Sonic OVA, and the game was going to have animation between each zone. This is why the first area in the OVA looks like Palmtree Panic, there’s a president on a floating island, and the R2 zone looks like the abandoned city in the movie. Also metal sonic is featured throughout the entire movie as the main antagonist.
I love how there are still hints that this is a kind of reference to sonic 1, mainly the stages, for example if R2 was kept: 1. Green hill - palmtree panic (both outdoor lushy levels) 2. Marble - dubious depths (both dungeon like and dubious depths would probably have had lava) 3. Spring yard - collision chaos (both bouncy spring levels) 4. Labyrinth - tidal tempest (both flooded temples) 5. Quartz quadrant is probably a new custom level to add more creativity and uniqueness 6. Wacky workbench same as quartz quadrant 7. Star light - stardust speedway (both city like levels) 8. Scrap brain - metallic madness (both dangerous and mechanical environments, assuming both are created by eggman)
I've heard it suggested that the levels - including R2 - are parallel to the ones from Sonic 1: Palmtree Panic - Green Hill R2 - Marble Collision Chaos - Spring Yard Tidal Tempest - Labyrinth Stardust Speedway - Starlight Metallic Madness - Scrap Brain
Seeing as most CD zones are reinterpretations of Sonic 1 Zones (Palmtree Panic = Green Hill, Collision Chaos = Spring Yard, Tidal Tempest = Labyrinth, Stardust Speedway = Star Light, Metallic Madness = Scrap Brain) It's likely that since R2 was supposed to be between Palmtree Panic and Collision Chaos, the level would be inspired by Marble since CD doesn't have any equivalent for it. Neat thing I noticed, unless I'm wrong Sonic CD is the only classic Sonic game to not feature lava.
R2 fan here and bringing some corrections The planet concept art you’re talking about released in Sonic Origins, it was never seen before. Instead of being 2R, the game does the organization by Rounds (shortened with R-) followed with the number of the stage. (R-1, R-2, R-3, etc). The D.A. Garden song was confirmed by Masato Nishimura/Mazin to be for the present of Dubious Depths… or Ridicule Route as an alternative name for the stage. The remixes were most likely made at the same time as the game. Which explains why they had to make good and bad future remixes of the tracks given to them. And D.A. Garden’s track was most likely shared as R2 to the composers. You also forgot to mention that Toei didn’t do most of the work, it was in collaboration with Studio Junio. Continuing the animation references, there has been 3 different references for Sonic, 1st made has Sonic wearing 2 side quills on his head, 2nd has the extra quill and the 3rd one is colored and has the eye thicker (same change for Amy’s). The final boss concept was reworked for Sonic Mania. The Grey Sonic sprite is death by contact with lava, not drowning. The 3/4 roll is for Palmtree Panic’s giant loop and ramp. This and the run on the same angle was said to be used on the PC release of the game (not the 2011 one). There’s a lot more to be said but you did a fine job, I just wished you could have done a more extensive research on some of the infos you shared here. For example, have you seen some of Masato Nishimura’s posts regarding R2 and some development stuff?
Another scrappred zone from the original or maybe an alternate name for R2 was Ridicule Root. We all know about Desert Dazzle and Final Fight that were scrapped from the remake.
I've also heard somewhere that the setting of R2 may have been heavily inspired by Castle In The Sky, with the elevel being represented by a floating green castle-looking island on Little Planet's sprite in the DA Garden, as well as its ancient stone architecture

There’s a mod of sonic cd with what the R2 level could’ve been like in the game. It’s basically based off the concept art of R2 and the music of it, it’s really awesome tbh
I don't remember where I heard this, but the sneezing animation may have initially been a reaction to the "Ga" or moth-like enemies in Collision Chaos, who leave a trail of sparkling dust that doesn't affect the player in any way. The idea is that the dust would make Sonic sneeze. I believe this theory. The trail of sparkling dust they let fall behind them is a weird thing to include in the game if there's no actual point to them. A first-time player would likely try to avoid the dust. From a development point of view, having Sonic stop to sneeze might need extra storage space that isn't totally necessary, so maybe they removed it for that reason.
Bro, aside of all of this, i pretty much adore that Metal Sonic 3D model have been pretty much established since the beggining and no one has ever wanted to change it.
The CD didn't have enough capacity to hold all the OST in Redbook audio I believe. So all the Past songs got turned to PCM waves to conserve data space. I presume R2 suffered not just from quality concerns, mostly from not being finished in a timeframe for QC presentation, but I wager they cut the R2 Bmix and R2 Gmix with its Pmix obviously to also fit in the DA Garden tracks for Opening & Ending.
@SonicTheHedgehogX15 that would genuinely be heat take these with a massive grain of salt, but we got some minor frontiers 2 leaks a few months ago, and basically sonic team plans to make the game have a more "cartoony" art style so that gives me a tiny glimmer of hope
8:50 Yknow that explains why the one of the manuals of sonic cd had a couple of things that somewhat took place in the satAM cartoon like Sally for example (cool character btw). On top of that I’m surprised there are still things that are not touched completely by people when Sonic cd came out years ago, and I love it 👍
Imagine if this games source code gets out…this games cut stuff is just intriguing to me since we lost a whole level. All we have is those sprites and the ending animation to go off of.
The build of Sonic CD shown at 13:20 could possibly be the build with R2 in it because none of the prototypes we have available have that darker version of collision chaos or the special stages with the realistic backgrounds I believe this was the build toel used as reference material when making the end cutscene that includes the R2 snippet but was later cut but restored by C.W in 2011
bruh, you are wrong in everything This is post-0.02 and pre-510 build, there is no R2 R2 was cut in 0.02, and before 0.02 we only have 0.01, which was a demo of an early special stage (remnants of this stage are still in the final game) We will only get R2 if someone finds the level files and posts them online (what is imposible) There no any prototypes with R2, and you never get it :badpersone:
@makasinaaaa why are you so aggro for no reason? 1st If there is no prototype with R2 then what exactly did toei use as reference material for the end cutscene that contains R2? That sprite sheet isn't enough to make that cutscene 2nd how did the Devs know it doesn't play well or that it doesn't meet quality standards without actually placing it on a prototype and actually playing it? 3rd send me links to videos of people playing that version of collision chaos and the special stages on the prototypes you named
@ When I said post-0.02 and pre-510 build I meant this build with early CCZ BF (I expressed myself a little unclearly) Who told you that they were based on a prototype? They started drawing cutscenes in the spring of 1992, and as Ohshima said, there were no CONCEPTS drawn for TTZ that were send to Toei They were based on CONCEPTS, not PROTOTYPES I don't know about quality standards (I don't trust this information from the interview, it sounds more like a hoax than reality) but the level was cut precisely because of problems with the space memory (and "Didn't fit" can be interpreted in different ways) I won't write a long message to explain everything, you won't understand anything anyway

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the Antlion (ant-lion) enemy is based on the real bug of the same name. It burrows into sand pits so that prey fall in for it to get.

9:10 They made the right call not switching out Amy.
I wish we got dubios zone
Sounds like it wouldve been my favorite and most iconic
Heck so iconic it would reappeared in mania
Well idk, they did say the stage was removed cause it wasn’t good.
@@shaulov10 it honestly sounded cooler than others
A dungeon zone
We need a sonic cd 45 minute 2d movie 🙏
sonic ova looks kinda like sonic cd intro, ya should check it out
This video looks so good !! How did you make the CRT TV?
10:50 It reminds me a lot of the OVA, where eggman took over from the president in this story
10:45 this would have made the first boss easyer
Bro, aside of all of this, i pretty much adore that Metal Sonic 3D model have been pretty much established since the beggining and no one has ever wanted to change it.
7:48 And Wacky Workbench…
…was?
HOW DARE YOU SCREW UP Hirokazu Yasuhara' NAME?
Good video btw.😊
That rainbow waterfall is so mysterious.
4:14 think those appear at the end animation when you complete the game, cause I dont remember those creatures from the ending appearing on any stage
I want more futuristic wacky games like cd again
if im being honest, visual wise colors felt the closest to cd as far as 3d games go imo
@ kinda ngl
But it was a themepark, i want something else
Maybe a open zone game where sonic goes back to little planet
@SonicTheHedgehogX15 that would genuinely be heat
take these with a massive grain of salt, but we got some minor frontiers 2 leaks a few months ago, and basically sonic team plans to make the game have a more "cartoony" art style
so that gives me a tiny glimmer of hope
@@Tripple_777-3 wait really?
We are so back
The Mountain View from the proto special stage looks something out of a fever dream or a distant memory
8:50 Yknow that explains why the one of the manuals of sonic cd had a couple of things that somewhat took place in the satAM cartoon like Sally for example (cool character btw). On top of that I’m surprised there are still things that are not touched completely by people when Sonic cd came out years ago, and I love it 👍
I would love for CD to be remade. Aside from the weird level design choices, the rest of the game is absolutely peak Sonic
Imagine if this games source code gets out…this games cut stuff is just intriguing to me since we lost a whole level. All we have is those sprites and the ending animation to go off of.
18:16 Close enough, welcome back Axl
I have been waiting for this
The build of Sonic CD shown at 13:20 could possibly be the build with R2 in it because none of the prototypes we have available have that darker version of collision chaos or the special stages with the realistic backgrounds I believe this was the build toel used as reference material when making the end cutscene that includes the R2 snippet but was later cut but restored by C.W in 2011
bruh, you are wrong in everything
This is post-0.02 and pre-510 build, there is no R2
R2 was cut in 0.02, and before 0.02 we only have 0.01, which was a demo of an early special stage (remnants of this stage are still in the final game)
We will only get R2 if someone finds the level files and posts them online (what is imposible)
There no any prototypes with R2, and you never get it :badpersone:
@makasinaaaa why are you so aggro for no reason? 1st If there is no prototype with R2 then what exactly did toei use as reference material for the end cutscene that contains R2? That sprite sheet isn't enough to make that cutscene 2nd how did the Devs know it doesn't play well or that it doesn't meet quality standards without actually placing it on a prototype and actually playing it? 3rd send me links to videos of people playing that version of collision chaos and the special stages on the prototypes you named
@ When I said post-0.02 and pre-510 build I meant this build with early CCZ BF (I expressed myself a little unclearly)
Who told you that they were based on a prototype?
They started drawing cutscenes in the spring of 1992, and as Ohshima said, there were no CONCEPTS drawn for TTZ that were send to Toei
They were based on CONCEPTS, not PROTOTYPES
I don't know about quality standards (I don't trust this information from the interview, it sounds more like a hoax than reality) but the level was cut precisely because of problems with the space memory (and "Didn't fit" can be interpreted in different ways)
I won't write a long message to explain everything, you won't understand anything anyway
@@makasinaaaa Imagine getting passive aggressive over a video game to the point where you start insulting me if you have nothing productive to say then don't say it and move on this is the internet if you don't like my opinion it's not the place for you
@@loweni7460 I didn't insult you anywhere lol, I just pointed out where you were wrong
You told me that they were based on a prototype, I quoted Ohshima where he says that they were based on concepts, and thats all lmao
If you think that an argument is an expression of aggression, then there is clearly something wrong with you
And what the hell is an opinion in such things if we talking about game development?
Maybe the alt skidding animation would've been for the Super Peel-Out speed, giving the illusion of Sonic stopping faster.
Sonic CD is such a cool game
i respect bro. Also that "bYeEeEeEeEeEeEeEeEeEEEEeEEeeeEEE" was crazy 💀🙏.
End of video tradition
@@shaulov10 lol
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the Antlion (ant-lion) enemy is based on the real bug of the same name. It burrows into sand pits so that prey fall in for it to get.
15:27 no, It was not placed
Theres another piece of concept art on sonic origins that shows R2 as a marble zone type underground level
i talk about it for like 5 minutes
Which is supposed to be a lava level just like marble zone?
Underrated channel 😤
15:30 maybe for when eggman appears in stardust speedway act 3
That could be the case
After the fearless year of shadow i hope we get the stainless year of metal's metalic tendencies to impose madness
Some people also believe Dubious Depth’s theme is based off 808 state’s pacific state song
The promotional screenshots are cool but I don't understand why you couldn't have just used some of the earlier Prototype Builds footage instead of just the screenshots, other than that I think that this is a great video. Nice job
R2 is called R2 due to the 1993 PC port of Sonic CD having it's stages listened as R(Number) in the files.
11:40
"Finally, god take me"
4:13 lmao “antlien.” also burrobot’s from Sonic 1, he was Grounder before Grounder
I NEED a High quality book print of these
That would be sick
@@shaulov10 when I got the sonic origins game manual and found ORIGINAL CONCEPT ART I was like WHAT AM I HOLDING RN
dont step on the sand it'll make the antleons go crazy
14:17 - wait. isn't it that sound Jun used in sonic adventure in invincibility theme?
No. He uses a different song entirely
I now have the sudden urge to make a Sonic CD like fan game using this information 👀👀👀
The Metallic Madness boss concept with Robotnik's legs dangling looks like the Titanic Monarch (Mania) boss.
15:42 OH SO THAT’S WHAT THAT WAS
for the metallic madness final boss concept ill fix it
so the boss is just an upside down egg with 3 different cannons on each side and on its front it has techno horns and behind it is a cockpit for ol eggs over here on the top front of the boss
8:58 Oh is that why in the US manual (If I remember correctly) Amy is called Sally?
14:49 This sounds like the Speed shoes from Sonic Megamix
I love the duality of this game
i cant believe bro said "this wouldnt be a CD video if it werent for the iconic and amazing animations by toei animation" like dude didnt even do research on the actual creators that got less credit while toei got more, it was actually studio junio (look it up), cant believe people are brainwashed (but you can say toei or junio sonic i guess), but still nice video :)
I'm disappointed that people don't get that the black and white sprites for sonic are for colour contrast.
