- The Yamaha MODX6 has arrived in the shack and we'll introduce this interesting and significant new synth, do a leisurely unboxing, discuss the features and specifications and then play some of the signature sounds using the new FM-X synthesizer engine. We'll be demonstrating the MODX6, which has the same features as the MODX7 and MODX8, with technology inherited from the flagship Yamaha Montage.
This is the successor to the Yamaha MOXF6 and the Yamaha MOTIF that we have previously featured on the channel!
This is the first in a series of videos about this new synthesizer.

The MODX is exciting but the best thing for me is that your channel has grown to the point where companies are now sending you gear to demo. That's a milestone if there ever was one - Well done, Woody. Thanks for the great demo, exiting to see Montage tech trickle down to an affordable level. It sounds great.
thanks for the comment Jordan, appreciate the thought, it shows what's possible for an average guy if you put in the work and give it enough time.
absolutely, nice one woody. Congrats
You put a lot of effort in - always watch your vids - got me to buy a d50 and a dx7 when I had been ignoring these digital ones - so cheap and both are really good
I couldn't agree more Jordan. I've been a silent follower of Woody's channel, and I'm happy that Woody can achieve this milestone (yes it IS a milestone for any youtubers when a big brand is recognising your channel and sending you their new product)
well i was on a 'anologue frenzy' buying lots - I came across woodys channel and enjoyed it and honestly it turned me onto buying some old digital synths dx7 and d550 - his presenting style is unique and enjoyable - very accessable.
MONTAGE and MODX, best synths on planet earth.
Love my MODX.
It looks and sounds great, I am definetely getting this one. After long search for workstation jumping between MX49 and ROLAND JUNO DS61 then letting them go,looking for individual reface DX,CS AND CP looks like this can do it all and even more, wow 8 operators more than DX7 this will be so much fun.1199€ is a very good price for what Yamaha are offering.
Woody, the only Reface I have is the CP, but if you want to compare its sound against that on any voice, send me a MIDI and I'll record the output on Audacity. I am curious now because you sounded unimpressed with Yamaha's efforts in CP-80 sounds.
My MODX is sitting here still packed. This is a perfect first step. Woody is so good I don’t even need to look at my keyboard.
After Roland, Yamaha found out about you. That is great news. You've come a long way, dear ;) Congratulations! A nice synth this MODX.
Hi Woody.
Great first look... I've subscribed as I'm watching this 5 years on waiting for my MODX6+😃
I'm a Roland guy but this machine looks incredible. And nice and lightweight for my gigging!
Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to the rest of the videos 😃
Last time I was on Woody's Channel he had just under 20K subscribers, now he has 45k !!!!!! MODX6 now under £850 as of May 2020 excellent price for great synth.
wow, that's a great deal!
Yamaha is hitting the nail right to the head!!!
It's great to see a guy with a lot of experience, get such a big buzz from new stuff ,so rock on mate ! I enjoyed the review.
I have seen this video so many times, and I can’t stop until my modx finally arrives :)
Thanks for your videos Woody, your content is amazing 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
thanks and best of luck when yours shows up, you won't be disappointed!
Congrats on being picked by Yamaha to do a demo, hope its the first of many for you.
Congrats Woody!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
The MODX looks and sounds amazing! Nice unboxing and demo 😎🎹
All of the keyboards that I've ever purchased since I was a teen until now has always been yamaha. I think this keyboard looks great.
Super sweet! Thanks for making the demo. It sounds pretty sweet! Take care, Sam.
The smiles as you were playing said a lot!
Congrats at the pre-release!
Modx sounds super nice and futuristic 👌🏻
Thanks! just bought it, will watch your vids about the synth!
wow, congrats on your new synth day!
Exclusive unboxings, this is a big step in the channel
presumably you're being sarcastic, but we did a lot more than just an unboxing in this video... and this is just the intro to set up a series of videos, thanks for the comment though, cheers :)
Congrats Woody... sign of many good things to come!
hi there Neil! i hope so, i'll check out the rhodes and hammond for you.
Oh yes I'll be waiting ? Waiting for what ? For You're next installment, & in depth look
at the new MODX as I too had purchased the MOFX about a week before you reviewed.
Which only proved my thoughts were on track. Now I heard about the MODX the other
day during my weekly visit at Sonic State. Now Nick refused to spill the secret but he
did say he was leaving for New York to attend a Product Revell by Yamaha ?
It took me about two minutes to find a leak about the two new Yamaha products
and my next logical place to visit was right here of course. I was proud to hear you
have been included into the Makers World. Especially when they are sending you
pre-release info & an actual product(s) to fiddle with.
You looked very happy while exploring the functions on Box Opening day. You're becoming more & more important and respected. It surely happened quite quickly.
Time moves quickly doesn't it specifically when we own products that have the ability
of tweaking & manipulating , time in relationship to Audio past & present pre & post
itself. Keep up the great work & I mean keep up the great work , don't wait months
for that Review ?
Why and let others beat you to the punch. There is no reason you can't have an
initial Review & Revisits at 6 months & 1 year. This could be a test ? The time is
now , so please keep that light bright & shinny.
I have always been very vocal & against the old practice of giving away brand new
Gear to the well known and most visible players. They seldom care little for those
things that come their way for free. After all they can afford anything they want.
They too just like us, the Celebrity Players love to do the same stuff we enjoy.
They like us still do enjoy a bi monthly visit to the local Music Store, to see old
friends & other neighborhood players who come in all flavors & levels of ability.
Those still struggling & hoping to become as successful as you are in their eyes.
They enjoy seeing that you're still a real Human being the store love it too.
When I worked at Kawai I convinced them not to offer free gear to Pro for their
endorsement. No one believes they're serious users of new products. Instead let's
give the public a chance to win one of our many give away's Synth's. which are
the products many of them can only hope to buy one day as a used item. I will
share the results of that time another time.
And Now to think back when you were concerned about that job ? What job ?
Oh come on Woody you must remember the one you were laid off from ?
and also the one you were ( Not Fired ) from one you could have kept if you were
willing to move ? Aha Take on Thee, take on me take it home Karma for keeps.
See how the universe works ? You're getting a bit of a taste right now ! you deserve
it God be with you as he is. May it last as long as you want. Here's to continued
success to you & yours. The family all of them remember to treat them well.
Love is all we need. our gear comes second ...
Gratz, my man! This is a nice moment!
Can’t remember if I told you, sold my Motif XF8. Too heavy to take anywhere. Got myself the Montage 7, amazing keyboard. They look like they’ve done a brilliant job of making budget models there. Good score Woody!.
Great Yamaha send you one before launch! Shows where you have come with your channel. Congrats!
right on, can't quite believe it.
Congratulations on the continuing success of your channel.
I hope you develop two ideas on your channel:
1. Tutorials on pop rock (especially 80’s)
2. Deep dives into this keyboards functionality
Thank you for sharing your talents with us.
Bull, everybody has presented the modx on the 14th.
@roland gerard well course they have you nitwit, 14th was the launch date. He will have recorded this video days or even weeks ago when they gave him the pre-launch model, but he will have been embargoed from posting it until 14th September.
That's my point, he does not have any privilege like he says on the video, "i am allow to", this is just bull. Who is the nitwit now....
Thanx Woody, you just destroyed my plans to save some cash. :) Time to start selling of my old machines :)
Who doesn't love to unwrap a new synth !!! Great demo, Woody :~) 👍
Not bought a synth since my SY22 over 30 years ago. This one excites me, even though my hands aren't up to it any more
Fantastic overview and playing! Looking forward to more breakdowns and reviews. I'm so happy to have found your channel!
fantastic comment, glad you found us!
Totally awesome that you got your hands on one before official release! This is an outstandingly good unit
Watched the stream awesome warm sounds Cheers from Australia
Oh boy that superknob is like the filter res and drive sweetspots all in one controller sounds awesome, I'm really looking forward to this series of videos
good video I have got I 1 coming soon can not wait
I just don't know what is better, a Woody's video at Friday or this amazing synth!
too kind of you, maybe time to reschedule to a friday night slot then!
I like Saturday's series too, but is a good idea!
No way!! This is nuts!! Thanks!
Awsome sounding synth. Looks like a great synth for creating soundtracks and film scores. The combination of FM synthesis with the other synth engine is quite novel. It also feels a bit like a modern wavestation in a way, in how the sounds sort blends and evolves.
dykodesigns2yt Well they already did the FM/AWM hybrid thing 30 years ago... but the world wasn't prepared back then ^_^,
Ward de jager I thought you could cross modulate FM oscillators with awm oscillators in the Montage/modx ... :-(
Holy crap, this is on my wish list now.
Love the way you was brave enough to demo a keyboard straight out of the box without a behind the scenes look first. 😂
Look forward to seeing you getting to grips with this nice looking instrument. And great to see Yamaha continuing with FM synthesis. Time to upgrade my trusty DX11🤣
Loved the Noone Is To Blame part of the demo. Gorgeous sounding instrument.
i barely found out about this thing two days ago and you have a video? whaaaaaaaat!!!!
Congrats Woody on your first company collaboration. On a first model release even. 8D
Thumbnail looks like Woody's ultimate Christmas Day present.
Thanks Woody, great demo :-)
What a fantastic sound when I compare this to my 15 year old MO6
Thanks, Woody! I have a itch on my pocket, now... It's time to save money for this!
I had a Play on one yesterday, sounds awesome. Always been a big Yamaha fan. Much more interesting than my Korg Kronos.
my lovely yamaha modx. You will get the best out of this keyboard if you have DAW and John Melas software.
man, sounds amazing @29:36, what a lovely evolving pad/sequence.
Sounds great for general sounds but again nothing stands out for me,very much " the same as" if that makes mad sense ??
Its more of a live gigging synth IMO.
Still looking for the synth that can be real added benefit, for inspiration. An ideal world for me would be a synth that can combine layers that can provide 'unique" arpeggios and pads plus send to DAW to add vocals and drums.
Studio time reduced and happy clients..
Just arrived today. You pulled my trigger!
You did a cracking job Woody. As they’d say in Wales, fair do’s butty!
Dang some of those sets sounded pretty lush yet disgusting (in a good way). Very interesting, can't wait to hear more!
28:25 the sampled piano with the DX7 electric piano is one of the nicest combos I've ever heard.
No one is to blame....first song....and my first bought single.
haha, well spotted sir! it's just the first thing that came to mind, nothing here was planned or rehearsed :D
Goo it's a lot of money for a synth!
Sounds good so far, just hope those hidden multi-arpeggios don't stay hidden or difficult to navigate to as it could become a long term frustration. Looks good as well. I bet you're well chuffed to be given one to review.
this bloke is elite
dangerous
Multi-channel USB is awesome!
Sounds like a dream
Some of those sounds!!!!!!!! Ya know every time I think software is catching hardware up, I hear reverb on sounds like that and then I think not a chance. Those sounds are just gorgeous! Could Omnisphere get even close? OK just finished watching the whole vid and I have a criticism with the synth. They shouldn't make it so easy to get to the best sounds straight away. That means everything else is a step backwards! Not your fault though Woody. Great enjoyable video.. thanks/
Thanx for the video! It's so inspiring! Now I know what will my next instrument be)
thank you woody for the video!
@29:36 - LOVE that ambiance! I have all Yamaha boards, well, one Korg, but I am so going to get this board as a top board for gigs. The only thing about Yamaha I have a gripe with is allowing more flexibility to create richer EP's. I loved playing my brother's Roland G8. Those EP's were nuts! I hope this board allows that and look forward to seeing you develop the sounds as you learn this board.
BTW, you sound like a soundtrack musician. That's a great skill to have. =] You've been subbed my friend!
5:19 'Do you wanna see it?' - 'No.'
After swearing to myself to not buy anymore instruments before learning to play i ended up buying a used Casio FZ-1, and honestly after that it feels a bit weird to see a yamaha that costs over 1000 euros lack aftertouch.
But still it's awesome to see cheaper instruments start featuring multiple synthesis engines. (Though with my budget if i end up getting a yamaha it will probably be an original rack motif.)
good point, i'm not really an aftertouch guy so I don't care, but seems like all manufacturers leave it out at this price point, which I know is unpopuiar. guess you get what you pay for...
Damn, nice playingskills there! That keyboard also sounds pretty sweet.
Im so glad Yamaha thought about the masses also wanting to have fun 😂
I've seen a couple of other demonstration videos about the MODX from the channels I've subscribed. I must say so you far, even this intro so far is the best of them all! It's actually good you had to stay away from this motif bells and whistles as so we could hear the actual sound and not this fuzzy "magic" which has no use in real world.
Great intro video. I find your vids really helpful and entertaining. Nice one
Nice bit of Howard Jones there :)
I'm glad to hear the keys feel better than the MOXF, which I thought were too light. I'd heard rumors of a MOXF replacement earlier this year with Montage features and a touch screen, but I didn't think it was going to actually happen.
these keys are just as light as before, but I think they have a more quality feel, the springiness and bottom-out feels nicer. and the textured finish.
Thumbs up for the Howard Jones, and my Mox6 needs to be a bit worried!
I can’t wait for mine to get in. Especially since I have this week off... yeah, I’m one of those sorry sods who can and has to work remote.
2 years ago I sold my PSR6xx and MOXF6 and despite getting back a system8 and a JDXA, which I adore! I do miss the MOXF6. I’m sure that the MODX7 will fill that void.
Wow. Thanks Woody. I appreciate so much this. It's an interesting hybrid instrument. And you don't need to buy the more expensive montage. I follow near you about the next video About this modx
Now this is the Motage-Lite
No one MO, MOX, MODX etc. will never replace old kind DX7. Beauty and sound quality completely different.
It gave birth to new generations but its the granddad that we all love and remember.
A lovely unit .not for me as I already have a Kronos ..but I would've been tempted if the keybed was better ,it deserves a better keybed than it has
Great unboxing! Please, what program do you use on the computer?
29:35 onwards: EARGASM until 30m45s.
Nice one
Certamente o melhor review do instrumento que assisti até agora!
?MO (ontage)+DX fm edit: haha, you figured it out while I was typing
Awesome 👏 woody 👍
great job...and for the record...i love the super knob :)
Good product. I miss those tiny buttons on the right. One drawback is they have degraded the Piano sound and no mic input or vocoder like MOXF
There is a mic input and a vocoder on the MODX.
Straight into HJ. Nice. Looking at this to replace my fa06???
Awesome video Woody! I had heard of a possible montage sibling in the pipeline and I was hoping it would be a light weight version of the montage without compromising on the features. And from your video, it looks like MODX is everything we could hope for! I was not aware that this sibling had been released and I was pleasantly surprised to learn about it from your channel. I could not have asked for a better introduction to this BEAST. Looks like it is time for me to upgrade from my lovely MOX keyboard :)
Thanks for the introduction Woody. Yamaha chose well!
yes, i think they got this one right for the price, not sure if I'm a touch-screen guy, but only time will tell. thanks for the kind words.
@@WoodyPianoShack the lack of buttons on the right panel was the first thing that caught my eye. I prefer buttons over a touch screen myself, but looks like Yamaha has given in to what most users have been asking for - a touch screen. I would have preferred they kept the panel buttons too. Still, fingers crossed and I hope that the lack of buttons is not a deal breaker. Looking forward to your review of this machine. Please let us know how comfortable you get at using the touchscreen.
touchscreen UI making me uneasy, but let's give it our best shot!
JUST BOUGHT A MODX8 SO IM IN THE SAME LEARNING STAGE TOO . HAVEN'T EVEN TRIED TO PLAY IT YET
congrats and have fun!
Thanks for a good demo, is this keyboard has a sample future?
no, but you can transfer over samples via usb drive.
Woody, so pleased for you. Hope this brings you a ton of views.
I’d really like to know how the fm basses sound vs awm, particularly how clean they are in the lower octaves.
Also the moxf had an annoyance on the cutoff knob as those knobs would step, if you could address how the knobs on the modx are in comparison would be really interesting.
Due to the modulation options on the moxf I never found the stepping to be an issue as I would use an expression pedal, lfo or mod wheel for cutoff control live. However, it did bug me that Yamaha didn’t pick it up in design.
Also, the moxf has 6 arps for each performance so it could be used similar to an arranger, I.e. moving between verse, chorus, bridge arps - would be interested in what the modx offers, it looks like 4 on the Andertons video I just watched and they referred to them as scenes I believe?
At least on the Montage I don't hear any stepping on the cutoff knob.
very curious myself about the arp performences and how they are integrated with the scenes, there are only 4 buttons there. the knobs are "notchy" just like the moxf but I didn't hear any stepping when I played the filters, I'll pay attention to it next time.
Woody Piano Shack oh so they are still notchy, that's interesting. Perhaps they interpolate between the notches now? If so that's annoying as it could be fixed on moxf via firmware then.
Meus parabéns pela aquisição deste excelente sintetizador
Woody, please get back to me, what instrument did you play between 30mins and 31mins?
Would I have it on my montage 8?
Nice demonstration, woody. Is that a Maschine mikro mk3 on the desk ?
it is!
The sound at 10 min is wonderfull. If the price tack is 1000 Euro, then its 7,500 kr :-) Greeting from Denmark.
Yamaha Modx6 - 61 keys
Yamaha Modx7 - 76 keys
Yamaha Modx8 - 88 keys
woody wood pecker you always get all the music toys...
Hi Woody :) I found you channel recently - became a big fan of your playing! As a beginner, I would like to ask you two questions 1) how did you learn to play keyboard - did you take any piano lessons? 2) where do you find the melodies you play? I mean you use your own ideas or are there any online sheets of famous synth melodies? For example the melody you play at 31:15, its so superb!!! Where does it come from? I am sorry if you answered such questions before. Thanks!
Hi Tounin, I could do a whole video on the topic of how I get started, but in short, yeah, I took classical piano lessons from about 4 years old and continued until 14, then since then just playing by ear. My demos are improvisations made up over the first chord progression that comes to mind when I hear the sound, often loosely based on chords and melodies pop, blues or jazz songs. All played by ear and without sheet music. Planning on making some videos to help you do the same... Glad you discovered us! :)
Such videos would be great in my opinion! Thank you very much for your answer and for the videos you make:)
WOW
That first number was FAT, even via UA-cam.
I can see why you were grinning. Not really a big fan of EPs, but that was awesome.
Going to be hard not to trade my moXF in for this. Especially the DX patch compatibility.
I heard Nick Batt was invited to come to the announcement from Yamaha. He couldn't tell us in advance what it was about. I should have known it was would be about a stripped down Montage. I wasn't too convinced after I heard Bert, Yamaha's salesman, perform on the original Montage when it came out. But when I hear you play the MODX, I am suddenly very interested. The MOXF was on my bucket list, but that list has changed this last half an hour. The Reface DX was also on that list. Not any more now.
whatever happened to Bert, these Yamaha product launches just aren't the same without him... maybe now is the time to get a great close-out deal on a MOXF, still a great synth.
@@WoodyPianoShack You're absolutely right there, Woody. Although the MODX is about half the price of a Montage, the MOXF is still a lot cheaper, is probably going to be even cheaper after this launch, and to be honest, the MOXF looks a lot cuter to me anyway. Yeah, I know it's all about sounds and specifications to choose a synthetic, but looks do count as well. And, am I wrong, or is the MOXF easier to handle when you want to play a performance with rythm, bass and everything that comes with a full band, or does it just me? By the way, I haven't seen Bert for ages. I think he doesn't work for them anymore. A shame it is.
29:36 that sounds incredible
It’s nice to see a baby montage line, but I’m holding off until I can give the manual a good read. I have the MOXF6, and it’s internal sequencer is awesome. If the MODX doesn’t have the 16 trk midi, and pattern seq, I’m passing on the MODX. The MOXF also has great post song editing too. If they put a mediocre sequencer in the MODX, I can’t justify paying $1,300 for my needs. Sure you can use a DAW (which I do have), but what makes the MOXF line so amazing is you can literally compose an entire composition on it without using a DAW (plus it has a 3 band EQ on every part).
Just goes to show how different players value different features more. I've been waiting for a lightweight Montage, for gigging around town, but somehow, the lack of aftertouch keeps it from being that 'all in one' that I crave. But tis' close! Hey, put 9 drawbars on it, and....
I think we've all gotten a little spoiled with synths becoming more powerful and cheaper over the years - there'll never be a 17 lb, FM/Formant/Hi-quality SamplePlayer ROMpler, with a great sequencer built in, a virtual organ with real drawbars, and built in switchable speakers, for $1499. (I only say that so that I'll be proved wrong by YamaRolandNordKorg!) - well maybe in 2022...
@@tommymandel Yep agree on the missing AT function, particularly on what Yam claim as a 'players synth' rather than traditional workstation. Guess they (reluctantly) had to leave out amongst other high-end features to protect the lack of Montage sales realisation ... getting MODX6 and using my GEMS3 Turbo (Poly AT with release velocity!) as great master controller for it. Hope that works out for me. A 'poor man's' 76-note Montage! :)
Another reason Yamaha may have, in leaving AT off of the MoDX's could be weight considerations? Although DeepMind has AT and it IS pretty lightweight...What do you think, Woody, and good luck with your fun post-redundancy-life!
