      It's brilliant isn't it. Yamaha reps are always nicely focussed and balanced. The power of this synthesizer hasn't yet been fully realised outside confidential development meetings at Yamaha. How do we get closer to those people?

    Yamaha not afraid of undermining their montage range and I really respect that. Anyone who knows their stuff can appreciate the differences as a buyer, but for either customers being able to share motif/mox and montage presets is such a fantastic concept.
    And it sounds fantastic, I love the motion and live elements Yamaha put into their synths, as a wavestation lover I feel Yamaha now own this domain right down from their presets to the controls available to users.

    Bought the MODX8. So far, I really like it. The main built-in piano is great and usable live, lots of other great patches, an FM engine, it's light - 30lbs, it's not too expensive, pretty well everything on my list.

    It looks daunting ...not as much as Montage, but still a steep learning curve. I wonder how many of the sounds are useable as oppose to nice-but-pointless soundscapes as in at 20:35s. I think I've heard enough of those sort of sounds...it's the law of diminishing returns with them. I'm no longer amazed by 246 arpeggios all bubbling away at once. When they switched to the Bosendorfer sample it was a wonderful relief.
    Think I'm gonna stick with Nord and Juno DS on top whilst continuing to practise my chops on a good digital piano.

    • @greggrimes2580
      @greggrimes2580 5 років тому +4

      I am also of the same mind as far as useless sounds. "I'm never going to use this sound... Ugggh!" and they put tons of them between the really good useable sounds. But No sequencer and that kinda sucks but it isn't a deal killer. I wasn't really looking for that anyway. I just want great keyboard sounds that I can use. The MODX6 seems to run amok with killer crisp clear sounds.

    • @TheSunlight74
      @TheSunlight74 4 роки тому +4

      Actually further to this I DID get a MODX in the end - and it's fantastic. It's as deep or as basic as you want it to be. Kronos quality for a fraction of the price. I pair a MODX7 with a Nord Electro 6 as I prefer Nord pianos, Hammond and EPs. It's a killer combo

    • @Roboprogs

      I love the sounds the MODX (Montage) series makes - nothing else at this price touches it - but the UI is an instrument of torture.
      I have been programming computers for over 30 years, but every time I tinker with the MODX, the screen and button arrangement are unintelligible. Roland did an almost perfect job with the panel on my Juno DS, and it sounds pretty good. Too bad the Roland doesn’t have a mod wheel instead of that joystick, and the black and white keys have a feel I don’t care for.

      OK. I found the answer on the Yamaha FAQ - "MODX has Fully-functional Sequencer?
      No. MODX just has the simple sequencer "Performance Recorder". It does not have edit function." Oh well..

    • @Racingheartrecords
      @Racingheartrecords 5 років тому +1

      Yea, I've been on a quest to get away from using a computer for sequencing for many years, but I haven't been able to find anything suitable. Manufacturers seem to think we all want to make music that is based on a single drum pattern and has no time signature variations for the entire song. I want to chain patterns together like an old drum machine. And don't get me started on drum machines. We entered the era many years ago where all machines could have plenty of storage space and yet manufacturers of drum machines think we should all be happy with 64 patterns and 10 songs. What is the deal? The brightest star for me so far is the AKAI Live, but I want this in a workstation keyboard with drums and multitimbral virtual analog or real analog synthesis. Seems too much to ask! One day it will happen, and it will be the biggest thing that should have happened decades ago.

    • @Racingheartrecords
      @Racingheartrecords 5 років тому

      Pete K It's nice to hear that I'm not alone. Thank you! I'm still using a Kurzweil K2000S as my main controller and synth as well as software plug-ins VIs like Arturia and Pianoteq because nothing else has come close to offering so much power in a workstation keyboard. However, I agree with you that my Mac Pro feels like a ball-and-chain. The trusty Kurzweil has a very slow startup and a loud hard drive and fan, but it has the fast, reliable keyboard with aftertouch and great master controller features. From a company like Yamaha or Roland, I want the power that I know could be available if they really heard us - in a lightweight workstation that I can carry around to gigs with a minimum of 61 keys. I'd still use my computer for recording, but that's cool because I want to record in my studio where I have all the proper sound treatment. The workstation doesn't need to be a recorder. It should be for live use and the primary synth sound source for tracking in the studio. I'd love to go to work for Yamaha or Roland and make this happen. I know exactly what I want.

    The MODX is a MOXF replacement?First I've heard it labeled that way.The MOXF was a workstation(song sequencing)...so then,why doesn't the MODX have a song sequencer in it??My PSR-S670 has a 16 track performance recorder in it and it's labeled as an arranger/workstation.The MODX has the same performance recorder in it(as the PSR-series) and yet,it's not labeled a workstation?Clearly...the PSR being labeled a workstation is a misnomer....so Yamaha has a lot of explaining to do.

    • @Paul_Y_T
      @Paul_Y_T 5 років тому +1

      I'd say it's a song recorder rather than a note sequencer - there's no method to "sequence" notes in the traditional sense, it just records what you play. The manual/os does refer to it as a sequencer in places, but in the manual/spec they headline the function as a "performance recorder" in the relevant sections. It also gets a bit confusing with the whole "motion sequencer" for modulation terminology too.

      IamVenVile There is no full functioning sequencer onboard because it is not a workstation. Yamaha has moved away from the “all-in-one” concept with their keyboards because producers use DAWs now most of the time when creating full blown productions.

      octopus34 Um, that's not what he says. He says it has 64 note poly instead of the 128 of the montage, then he says "64 note polyphony with the fm engine is massive, when you consider the DX7 had 6 notes" 6:44

    Only 1 GIGABYTE of user space is a shame . This should have at least 8 gigabytes possibility of expansion . I mean is this really that hard to put 2 ram slots in there ??. And I will gladly buy 2 ram sticks .Such a shame ....

    Thats an awesome keyboard. Shame the camera that was meant to show their faces was broken. Back of the head review. Like listening to two blokes talking on a train in front of me.

    So here we have a Yamaha guy saying it DOESN'T have a sequencer and somewhere ELSE we have a guy saying it does, at the launch. I think a touch screen machine should have a step sequencer and sequence editor.
    Zero reason NOT TO this thing has the CPU power and RAM and storage to handle that 1000x. "it's not a workstation" is a bullshit answer. It bloody should be in 2018.

    Are Yamaha ever going to fix the minimum velocity problem, on the "awesome" Reface CP?
    Press a key softly and all you get is silence. Send a note with velocity of 1, from an external keyboard - same result. Send a velocity of 2 - that works.
    The Reface DX is great, but the CP has seriously dented my confidence in Yamaha.

    Hy shit is there anyone in their marketing department under the age of 70? Because that format is entirely unnecessary for the target audience for this.

      LMAO How do I know the target audience? Is that a serious question?
      My critique was about this infomercial style format being unnecessary for the target audience, not whether or not anyone would enjoy the presentation.
      The target audience doesn't need the forced, fake style to be talked into buying this.
      That doesn't mean there aren't some simpletons out there who won't enjoy this forced farce of a presentation for a product that's generated more organic buzz and excitement than any rompler/workstation style board in years.
