I am just reading these comments for the first time. Thank you all for listening all these years. We made some very beautiful music together. I feel so grateful to have had such a remarkable life filled with beauty and love and song. I am still singing though mostly for myself these days. Taking the time to lay down my burden for a while. More music to come.

Oh my God, Susan! I heard this song a thousand times. Heared you 37 years ago in San Francisco. Unfortunately not on stage... on vinyl only.
I hope your burden will not be too much to carry for you!! Jesus bless you dearest sister. Your voice is divine - so you must be too!
      Be blessed ! Alexander

Just came to this post again. It was very hot, maybe close to 100 degrees - 95. David Darling and I are wearing those slightly embarrassing short tennis shorts of the era. I'm amazed how good the sound is here, we were sweating all over our instruments. David has tragically left us just recently, but his music will live on. Oscar Castro Neves, phenomenal guitarist, also no longer with us, was writing down the chords for another song we were about to do with him.
There was a big audience, and it was a long concert, with Pete Seeger doing a great set with us too. As it got darker, the mosquitos became ferocious. But then an armada of dragonflies arrived and the mosquitos virtually disappeared. That's outdoor concerts for you. But someone mentioned it's weird to see the wandering people in the background. You wouldn't have seen them from the audience's perspective. But certainly, Susan would stop time and everyone would go silent when she opened her mouth. She showed me how to command the moment with total commitment, and of course a voice that would transfix. Check her out she's still doing it phenomenally, with a great catalog of work recorded. in peace, Jim Scott www.Jimscottmusic.com

Thank you Todd. It was a beautiful day in the hills outside Litchfield CT. When I watch this nearly 40 years later, I first of all am honored to have had the chance to make music with musical masters, Paul Winter, Oscar Castro Neves, David Darling,Ted Moore, Jim Scott, and Gordon Johnson. What a band!!! Then to have such a song in my life. Timeless lyrics by Colleen Williams and music by Marilyn Castilaw, me and Colleen. I had the opportunity of a lifetime to record this song for Paul’s Common Ground project. I was invited to join in this co-creation on Paul’s Connecticut farm from my home in South Dakota. During a lunch break in the midst of sessions in the barn, Paul asked if I could teach this song he heard in South Dakota while visiting us, to Oscar who happened to be sitting on the organ bench eating his sandwich. I showed him the basic chords, Oscar harmonized in his unique way and shortly Paul asked us to record it. David Greene, our engineer, who happened to still be in the recording truck set up a Neumann U87 for me, and in one take we had it. Then we watched in awe as David Greene made a small edit in the 24 track 2 “ tape with a razor blade. Later David Darling added his amazing arrangement to the mix. The resulting recording and it’s inclusion on Paul’s ground breaking Common Ground project changed my life. Forever grateful for the long road in song that has unfolded.

Wow, thank you for responding, and what a wonderful story! (And an incredible story, the nick with the razor blade.) Paul Winter sounds like an incredibly generous individual. Let me just say this album and this song and your voice were a big part of my youth. Namaste, and I hope you are well.

I have never been able to hear the album version of this song without bliss and tears. Now, in the midst of the birth pangs of the planet and its population moving through the eye of the needle and into the beginnings of 5th density, it is even more evocative than ever! Thank you with all my heart. 💗

And why hasn't this woman had a major career? Why didn't any record company sign her for a solo career? I know she had solo albums out -- but they were all on independent labels as far as I know -- that never promoted her, nor did they provide her with the same powerful song as this. She's still absolutely marvelous. Love her. They talk about great female vocalists and they have no clue there are women like this who have recorded and performed. Just as good as anything Joan Baez has ever done and Joan is great. Maybe that's it. Susan never recorded anything controversial. One PBS Special would have done it for her. World music before they even called it that. Thanks Paul Winter for surrendering the stage to Susan so she could shine on this day.

I recently assembled a UA-cam playlist of songs I consider "melodic masterpieces," and this was one of the first songs I added. The song gave me chills when I first heard it on Common Ground in the early 1980s, and it still does today-especially this brilliant version. Thank you, Susan Osborne, Paul Winter, Jim Scott, and all the wonderful musicians who made this beautiful and timeless song the melodic and lyrical masterpiece it is.

DEAREST SUSAN WHERE ARE YOU TODAY IN 2021? I LOVED YOUR VOICE AND I DID A WORKSHOP WITH YOU YEARS AGO, IN UPSTATE CONNECTICUT (I think) . It was a very very special experience for me.
I remember you saying I had. “ Big Gift”. I had very little confidence then, so it meant a lot to me.
Your beautiful voice is surely a Divine Gift. It brought me so much joy. I still play your music.
I heard you went thru some tough times and I hope you are well and happy today.

She shines here just as she did in the recording for Common Ground. What I can't understand is all those people in the background, just milling around as if completely oblivious to this powerful performance taking place right before them. How they are not stopped in their tracks to listen to this woman putting her all into this song just amazes me, and saddens me.

    Lyrics:
    “Oh lay down your burden
    Lay it all down
    Pass the glass between you
    Drink it up
    Place the light before you
    Come through the door
The dragon doesn’t live here anymore
Sing with the choirs that surround you
And dance to music in your soul
Look into the eyes that really see you
Place all that you have into that bowl
Rejoice for the love that brought you near us
Set sail unto the ocean of your dreams
And do not fear the night or wandering weepers
Just listen to the voice that calls to you
That all these tales of paradise are true ”

Such a big surprise to find this gem on UA-cam! Many hugs and thanks to all involved.
40 year expat living in Japan here. The CD version of this album, and Oregon's 'Out of the Woods' are two of my go-to soundtracks when driving the mountains west of Tokyo. Have introduced several Japanese friends to the Paul Winter Consort and Oregon, but was blown away when the eyes of the public-school Jr. High school counselor sitting beside me lit up when I mentioned Paul Winter. She has the same 'Common Ground' album ... and I have yet to meet a fellow American over here familiar with either of the groups.
On the other hand. along with the pre healing-new age thing of PWC and Oregon, Japan is THE country to visit for those with ears. Even the local ¥100 made-in-China 'department' stores here are likely to have anything from Bill Evans, to Miles Davis, to Milton Nascimento playing in the background. Can't quite imagine Walmart shoppers having the same luxury.

A late reply. The UN album is called A Concert for the Earth, and still must be available. I was honored to be in that concert, and accompany Susan with all the other Consort guys. It was guys, as Nancy Rumbel did cross the country for that concert. I had just played with her the night before in Phoenix and taken a red-eye plane to NY. The concert came up rather short notice for some reason. Paul got an environmental award, and they concocted the concert around that. The choir was the Back Bay Chorale from Boston. I got there, wrote an arrangement of something for the choir, and took a nap while someone went and copied it. They came about 4 pm and read it, then performed it that night. I sang my "A Song for the Earth" on that concert, as well as "Common Ground." I was totally exhausted but that all goes on my record of the music business. The audience has no idea of what you went through to make it happen.
