- "Common Ground", a highlight of Jim Scott's concerts, is shown here as a solo version including close-up views of an extended guitar solo showcasing his fingerpicking style on the classical guitar. First recorded when Jim was with the Paul Winter Consort (as the title song of their final album for A&M Records), it also appears on Jim's solo CD "Earth, Sky, Love and Dreams". The music was written by Ivan Lins, with lyrics by Jim, Paul Winter, Michael Holmes, Joel Sattler, and John Guth ©1977 Intersong Music.
Jim, That was just beautiful. I had this song in my head today and was looking for the Concert For The Earth, which is where I first heard it, and found your cover instead. Just lovely. Beautiful guitar work, and a lovely voice to go with. Bravo!
I was looking for this Paul Winter Consort song to share this morning and found this version. It's great to see you beaming Light and hear you sounding so strongly. Thank you for the song, the Hope and your life journey.
This brought tears to my eyes…again, just as it did when I first heard it all those decades ago. Thank you, Jim.
Thank you for this gift of your song and all the years you have worked on "saving the earth". We have lots more work to do!
Jim you are an inspiration and your work with Paul Winter will always move my heart and soul.
Such an inspirational song, and fabulous technique. Love the chord progressions. Although I met and heard you at a sad occasion in Colorado Springs, your concert that event was an event I will never forget. Downloaded several items from CD Baby.
Nicely done!! (Also, if someone could please upload the Paul Winter original from Common Ground, it would be much appreciated!)
Nice windbreaker dude...
Thank you for teaching this to us at UUCGL not long ago. Tomorrow we will do Missa Gaia for Music Sunday, so we're all thinking of you with gratitude here at UU Greater Lansing.
That’s all we really have is “common ground”
NOW; MORE THAN EVER !
That works really well as a voice & guitar song. Very nicely done! Always liked the Consort version.
MÁGICO, JIM! pasanos los acordes para que podamos tocarla y cantarla!
Nice work, Jim!

thanks for your music! We need more common ground.
Thanks Nancy for your note. - I don't look at these messages on UA-cam much, I guess I should. In peace, Jim Jim@Jimscottmusic.com
Very nice work mate keep it up son.
You sound as good as ever, Jim!
Beautiful!
What a delightful update that takes me back to the generation of peace, love and harmony with our world. Would that this spirit could significantly take hold again today.
This has always been one of my favorite songs from your awesome collection of songs. I remember standing in a huge circle of people at the Earth Spirit conference in Florida years ago. Simply pure essence of true prayer and meditation in song.
Bravo. A fan of Jim, this Ivan Lins song and the Winter Consort from the start. UA-camrs who love this song should also search for "Ivan Lins Velho Sermao" to hear Lins, the amazing Brazilian composer/songsmith, sing it in Portugese on his '70s debut album. Did Winter's bandmate and producer on Common Ground--Oscar Castro-Neves--bring this to him? Or did Paul discover it on his Brazilian tours? The song's original title, Velho Sermao, means something like "elderly lesson" ... and the English lyric is very close to the spirit of the original.
Hi Gary, just found this old note. Thanks. Yes, Oscar brought the song, with permission from Ivan Lins to put new words to it. I added another verse that's on my version on Earth Sky Love and Dreams album. Imet Ivan a few years ago in NYC and got to tell him "I'm the guy" who sang it in English. I also showed him my lyrics "Life Is Starting Over" my very loose translation of "Comisar de Novo." He looked at it and said "That's great 'cause I always hated those other words." (The Island). I haven't recorded it but hope to sometime.
In peace, Jim Jim@Jimscottmusic.com
nice rendition, love that song... i noticed the lyrics were more elaborated, slightly different than the shorter 3 minute version, did you write the extra lyrics for your version of the song???...
Hi Forest, yes I added another verse with help from Joel Sattler too. I've been doing that extra verse since the 80s, I forget it wasn't in the original with Paul Winter, but it is on my Earth Sky Love and Dreams album version. Thanks, in peace, Jim Jim@Jimscottmusic.com
On the off chance that anyone reads this, does anyone have the sheet music for this song? I want to make ocarina tabs for it but I am awful at transcribing by ear.
sheet music available at www.Jimscottmusic.com
Very great thanks!
