  • A theory was born on a road trip...Is the first Bond movie of each Bond actor their best? Being James Bond and The Bond Experience explore this theory one actor at a time. Our second in the series is OHMSS with George Lazenby, and as you can imagine this is an easy one....but we really get into the nuts and bolts of the film nonetheless. Dennis Baker yes and no... I feel like had this been say Connery’s second or third film... I think yes he would have done a superb job! However by the time OHMSS went into production, Connery was completely checked out, he was tired of playing the part and it was starting to show in YOLT, which is understandable he had already played the character 5 times at that point. Had he done this film I think he would’ve done a serviceable job but his heart probably wouldn’t have been in it.

I’ve heard this argument before and I don’t really agree with it. While I think Lazenby did a great job especially for a first time actor....Connery would have outclassed him not only as Bond but in acting. Why? Because Connery is not only a better actor he’s one of the greats and an academy award winner. To say Connery wouldn’t have been able to convincingly be emotional or fall in love is basically saying he’s incapable of doing it as an actor and that first time actor George Lazenby could out-act him. The previous films never allowed him to have an arc, this would have really given Connery’s bond layers. I’ll reiterate I think George was great and very underrated but I think Connery could have totally given an iconic performance, and would have been the better swan song for his Bond.

Connery's Bond was "superman" by the late 60's and I doubt that he would exhibited the emotional vulnerability that Lazenby did in this film. I think George was the right man for the job.

WHY SEAN CONNERY WOULD HAVE MADE OHMSS PERFECT... AN UNTOLD STORY:
Few know that after the making of "Thunderball", Connery had agreed with the producers to make "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". In his interview to PLAYBOY on November 1965 Connery said that the plan is "to start On Her Majesty's Secret Service in Switzerland in January" (1966). In the same interview Connery stated: "But we have to be careful where we go next, because I think with Thunderball we've reached the limit as far as size and gimmicks are concerned... What is needed now is a change of course ... more attention to character and better dialogue".
So Sean Connery was anticipating on doing OHMSS because it was a challenge for him to act in a darker and more complex Bond movie. He wanted to work in depth with the evolution of Bond's character.
But then the producers decided instead of OHMSS to make YOLT.
Sean Connery was hugely disappointed. He wanted a new challenge of acting and the evolution of the Bond character. From then on he started to loose interest on the character. So yes! Connery would have made this great...
Some say that it seems very weird to think that Connery who was the "king of cool and masculinity" in Goldfinger and Thunderball, would turn emotional. But he was anticipating on doing this. And knowing what an actor he was, I think he would be terrific. (Just see him falling in love for example as King Arthur in "The First Knight", or in the "Entrapement" and you will understand what i am talking about...). He prooved in his career that he could play anything!

Agree completely-this film, along with Goldfinger and Casino Royale are the only Bond movies based on the books to actually improve on the Fleming novels.
I also completely forgot that Lazenby was basically a kid in this movie!!
He’s in his 20s starring in his very first film!
The youngest actor ever to play 007!
Up until the Craig films, this was also the most emotional and challenging acting an actor playing James Bond was ever asked to do.
When you think about that, what he did in this film becomes even more impressive.
And of course, for him to do this in one of the best 007 movies ever made is a pretty great accomplishment!

Lazenby's Bond, relatively young, vulnerable and infinite, has similarities with Bond in ''Casino Royale''. But Bond here is at the begining and has no past. In the final scene of this film, we see the character of Bond who had to be in O.H.M.S.S. A mature man with experience, like the actors in the other roles. Also Bond and Blofeld met in the previous film, and here doesn't know each other.

      I LOVE those books -
OHMSS is right up there with DR.NO as my very favorite Fleming novels......but yep, I think in some ways they actually are!
In general though- you are right- in Hollywood, Most novels are better than the movies that they are based on simply because there is more depth and story on the page that could fit in a 2 hour feature film.
(Probably Jaws and The Godfather are the only films I could think of right away that are MUCH better than the novels they are based on, but I’m sure there are many others.)
I agree that the vast majority of the films in the Bond series are definitely NOT better than the novels but I do think that those - along with Goldfinger and The Spy Who Loved Me - are the only ones that are.

I think George Lazenby did a great job. Considering that he never acted before. But I still wonder how OHMSS would have been with Sean Connery. I think it would have shown off Connery's acting chops if he could convince us that someone can be changed from being a playboy loving the bachelor lifestyle to someone who's been swept off his feet and bit by love. I think Riggs' performance would have been strong enough to convince us that she is worth and capable to changing him.

Actually the blue ski suit he wears to escape Piz Gloria is spot on; he is about to race down the slopes, he knows he will be chased immediately and high speed skiing produces enormous heat for the body. Athletes wear similar suits for slalom; you need thin, breathing material. It's a conscious choice (he is in the ski storage room).
If you notice, the moment he arrives in the village he rushes to find a jacket, it is then that the body "stops" and he is risking freezing.

The 69 Cougar used in this movie and driven by Diana, survived. It was restored to perfection and was sold at auction last year for big bucks. It made news in the car enthusiast circles. It was an XR7 with a 428 CJ motor. It seems as if all the movies released in 69 had something different or special about them. What grabs me about OHMSS is the sharp film editing. Lazenby was a decent enough 007, Rigg was more than just a Bond girl, and Savalas was my favorite Bond villain along with Gert Frobe.

I just watched today this for the first time since I was a kid in the 70s/80s. In those days, Roger Moore was my favorite Bond. I always hated this movie, especially the tragic ending. No cool gadgets!?! I only watched it once before today. I was skeptical going in. When Bond looked at the camera and said, “this never happens to the other fellow,” I was about to turn it off. And then I took note of how frequently people got the best of him: Tracy overtakes him on the road to the beach, he gets taken by surprise by two villains (and more than once in the same fight), Tracy steals his ride (if only to drive up to her own car), he gets ambushed in her hotel room, she pulls his own gun on him, she bails on him in his sleep, she swipes his gun, he gets ambushed again... all this in the first 20 minutes. I’m thinking, this Bond was written to be a buffoon. And then I resented how he courted this suicidally depressed daughter of a monster; is this what James Bond would do? And then, after all that courting, he goes off on sexcapades with Blofeld’s patients, and was about to go for another round before he was caught. But I thought he was falling in love with Tracy? Bond is a cad!
As the story developed I started to appreciate the lack of cool gadgets, forcing Bond to rely more on his wits and cool demeanor. I immediately (from the start) recognized that Lazenby was a good fight actor; his fighting scenes were impressive. Lazenby’s acting wasn’t as bad as I remembered, it just wasn’t that cheeky Roger Moore interpretation of Bond. But his wasn’t that humorless Bond (like Timothy Dalton’s Bond) I remembered, either. I found that whole story element of Heraldry to be unique and fascinating; I paused the movie to research about Heraldry. Then, Telly Savalas was an excellent Blofeld and that drew me closer to appreciation. The skiing action was the best and most realistic skiing action in any Bond film; far better than what I’ve seen in The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only, and The World is Not Enough. When Bond reconnects with Tracy as he is making his getaway from Blofeld, I was fully drawn into their romance and believed they were a perfect match. I had to reconcile Bond’s sexcapades as intentional in the film in order to add weight to Bond’s proposal of marriage; now it made sense. He was a real playboy in this film and that was highlighted when he read the Playboy and kept the centerfold. So he was dead serious about his feelings for Tracy.
I used to rank this as my least favorite Bond film. 25 of 25. But now I have to rank it as my second favorite, right behind Casino Royale. I think now that I’m in my late 40’s, the gadgets mean less to me than the character and the drama. That’s what these two movies excel in.

I was boosting this film from the day I saw it, at the age of thirteen, Christmas 1969 in New York City. George Lazenby was the main reason, with his confident, athletic performance and dashing Australian accent. (He also has the best build of the Bond actors.) I did not miss Sean Connery at all, especially after he dragged down “You Only Live Twice” with his sluggish, sleepwalking performance. (He would not have done a better job than Lazenby.) He also had the good fortune to be directed by Peter Hunt, someone with an equally solid command of the environment created by Ian Fleming - in the footsteps of Terence Young. Add to that a fine supporting cast, great writing, cinematography, editing, locations, and musical score, and you have - to this day - an epic in the Bond series. My opinion has not changed since 1969: this is the best James Bond film, starring the best James Bond!

PLAYBOY: In any case,''Dr. No'' turned out to be a hit, and you found yourself under contract for a series ... exactly what you said you wanted to avoid.
CONNERY: Yes ... but it allows me to make other films, and I have only two more Bonds to do.
      PLAYBOY: Which ones?
CONNERY: ''On Her Majesty's Secret Service'' and possibly ''You Only Live Twice''. They would like to start ''On Her Majesty's Secret Service'' in Switzerland in January, but I'm not sure I'll be free in time and I don't want to rush it, although they say the snow will be at its best then. I'm not going to rush anything anymore.
PLAYBOY: We'll be looking forward to both films ... especially since we were fortunate enough to serialize both books exclusively prior to their hardcover publication. Do you think the success of the series will continue to snowball?
CONNERY: Well, it's a healthy market and it has been maintained because each succeeding film has got bigger and the gimmicks trickier. But we have to be careful where we go next, because I think with ''Thunderball'' we've reached the limit as far as size and gimmicks are concerned. In ''Thunderball'' we have Bond underwater for about 40 percent of the time, and there is a love scene underwater, and attacks by aquaparas from the sky, and two-man submarines under the sea, and Bond is menaced by sharks. Instead of the Aston Martin we have a hydrofoil disguised as a cabin cruiser, and Bond escapes with a self-propelling jet set attached to his back. So all the gimmicks now have been done. And they are expected. What is needed now is a change of course ... more attention to character and better dialogue.

The 60s were easily the best decade for Bond films. Six films & all of them brilliant. All of them in my all time Bond top 10. Imo On Her Majesty's Secret Service is the best of those 6 films. Lazenby's Bond might not have been up there with Connery but the film itself is great. It has the best Blofeld. The best Bond girl. Some of the best locations & action of any Bond film. It's deservedly grown in stature over the years. I would have loved to have seen Lazenby back in Diamonds. Connery had already had his time as Bond & it was time move forward. Who knows, if he'd have done Diamonds we might be looking at 3 or four Lazenby films in total.

In a way, for the future generations, Lazenby was fortunate to have been given HMSS as his sole Bond movie role. It helps to accept him as a legitimate Bond despite the limited "sample". Had he been given " The Man with a Golden Gun", I doubt we would admire his participation as much as for this one.

Don't really understand you comment. His performance was good enough, I think, to suggest that he would have grown into the role. People compare him unfavourably with Connery, but don't forget, he had to grow into the role as well and the comparison is between someone who had played Bond five times and a newcomer - a tyro at that. My view is that he turned out surprisingly well in the role.

@@edwardkerrigan5356 Err... sorry if it seemed arcane. All I meant is that given the fact that we saw him in one film only, Lazenby can consider himself lucky it was OHMSS. Had it been a much less memorable Bond film (I named MWTGG, but I could have used 'Die Another Day' or 'Octopussy'), we wouldn't have many good things to say about his contribution to the character. He was lucky to have such a good Bond movie to illustrate himself.

I think OHMSS is a good example for the producers to learn from when they make these films. They followed the book which was adapted by Richard Maibaum who also did From Russia with Love. The music one of the best scores by John Barry Oscar level as was the photography. Because George was new to it he ended up doing more of the stunts which also adds to the quality of the film. Of course this is also is a love story which once again is done well. This added drama made the film both a action film and a emotional film. It's elements like that which make a film special. For thoughs who want to see a higher quality Bond this is a great example. George Lazenby has been way underrated as a result of leaving after one he should be judged for his ability to sell this character not outside opinions which are bias as a result of the media and some critics .

Funny thing is OHMSS was originally going to be filmed after Thunderball to follow the order of the original novels, but was cancelled due to having no snow during that time. So Connery was originally going to be in OHMSS regardless. And I even read that Connery would have liked to have done OHMSS instead of YOLT because of Bond's huge character development in that film compared to the previous films he did. I personally think it would have been even better with Connery because it would have been a much greater impact for HIS Bond ("too cool to fall in love") to actually meet a woman that would actually steal his heart. That's just my opinion. But Connery WAS supposed to be in OHMSS before YOLT. That's a FACT not an opinion.

Connery's weight gain and performance in Y.O.L.T. may work in favor in O.H.M.S.S. An agent tired of his job, finds happiness in love and marriage. Also his look and performance in D.A.F. would fit, after Tracy's death. Lazenby's Bond, relatively young, vulnerable and infinite, has some similarities with Bond in ''Casino Royale'' without the final scene. In this scene we see the character of Bond who had to be in O.H.M.S.S. A mature man with experience, like the actors in the other roles. After Connery here, I believe to Stanley Baker.

For this Bond film (remember they closely followed the book) the role HAD to be recast. The Connery Bond would not have fitted into this universe. The Connery Bond was the cinematic Bond, not the literary one. I think the producers knew this, and this is why they waited for Connery to quit the role before deciding to film OHMSS. Otherwise, with Connery, the film could not have been a faithful adaptation of the novel. Incidentally, OHMSS is right up there with my favourite Bond films. I love it.

Good show, gentlemen. I think you're right about a person's first Bond experience setting their taste for the entire series. My first was YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, which I saw in 1967 at the age of 9, and Connery remains my favorite 007. However, OHMSS is my favorite Bond film, and George Lazenby is my second favorite 007; because, well, I think Lazenby is excellent, but also because his approach to the character is essentially the same as Connery’s. Granted, Lazenby does come off as a younger, more callow incarnation of the character - and for that reason, I like to think of OHMSS as a prequel to DR. NO. Seen that way, Bond makes the young agent’s mistake of falling in love, with tragic consequences; and from that experience, he learns that his profession is incompatible with any impulse he might feel to develop deep, romantic relationships with women. Thus, Bond emerges as the hardened, emotionally detached man we see in Sean Connery’s performances - a man dedicated to his job and content to enjoy women serially, without emotional involvement.

I absolutely HATED Lazenby as Bond!
I read Dr No in the summer of 1962, and when the film was released, in October, I turned 12 less than a fortnight later - and of course went to see it. It was great! Connery was 100% James Bond and I just loved it. Over the next 5 years, I avidly waited for each next film and loved each one. And then suddenly there was this guy who moved and spoke and looked (almost) like Connery , playing Bond -- and it wasn't Connery. As I said, I hated him, and, therefore, I hated the film.
But I was still a child. Now that I have matured enough to make a dispassionate assessment, I think this is one seriously great film. George Lazenby gave it his best shot -- and it was far from bad, despite the interference of the British press stirring it up for all it was worth . I agree with Joe when he said that he would have liked to see another 2 Lazenby Bonds (at least!). Alas, we will never know what we are missing.
