  • Back again with more Scrap Mechanic! Today we are looking at an explosive powered engine! This is another one of those projects that has been long suggested and recommended so I finally decided to take a crack at turning explosive power into rotational motion!

    Dang dude I love the engine! I was considering ditching pistons altogether and going for some sort of external combustion engine for a car, but I'm still working out a good way to have it run without bombs flying everywhere lol

    When it accelerates the spudguns start missing some of their shots, you need them in front of the cylinder for them to be unaffected by their own movement. Then after they missed the first time one of the cylinders had multiple explosives spawned in it at the same time & one of them glitched upward and destroyed some of the spudguns. They should also probably be hooked up to the same activation as the explosive spawner (or a set delay if the spawner has a delay after activation) so that the spuds hit the explosive sooner after it's spawned.
    In any case I'm not sure you're gonna be able to get this to start (or accelerate well in general) without having it hooked up to sensors instead of being on a set delay. If it had 4 separate pistons (which could still be doubled up if you want) it would make it far easier to hook up with sensors, guaranteed to only spin in the direction you want it to, and far more reliable. With sensors and 4 pistons it would be much easier to start because the pistons would never counteract the direction you want it to be going, so as long as it starts moving at all it wouldn't stall it would just slowly accelerate until it gets to whatever it's top speed is. (if it's strong enough to push itself at all)

    Rather than making it into a differential to get both wheels, use both sides of the crankshaft as wheel locations, this way the piston chamber is the same axis of movement as the spawn location and the drop of the spuds won’t be so out of place too,

    I knew it would stall when moving. You might do better if the spawners were facing forward or backward to the vector of travel and had some wiggle room to work with but I don't see it working very efficiently.

    @kAN the spuds dont preserve momentum from the vehicle and eventually miss with increasing speed. also on your last test 2 spudguns were blown off.

      I played at low settings like that for a year or two at 18fps average! I built a gaming pc and I can get about 30-60 fps average at medium-high settings on survival

    By the way. The trick with putting the bend pipe into the suspension on a bearing with a screw does work in Survival. Worked the best for me when using a button, or a switch. Full sized blocks, or pipe pieces have to much/too little space to place the bearing/bend pipe piece on.

      I've been doing that trick for a while in survival and it works with pretty much any piece, you just have to know where to aim your cursor (it's a little counterintuitive for full blocks). You don't even need the bent pipe and I usually use 2 full blocks for durability.

      @@rokushou How I described doing it just felt the easiest, which I got to work without much trouble. So that is why I recommended it. Plus on a very small vehicle you save space. ^^

      @@rayguy4726 I totally agree the screw or button saves space, and full blocks are not viable if using small wheels. I just personally don't like using anything with low durability for structural components and wanted people to know you can do the suspension trick with something strong like wood 3 or metal 3.

    try spawning the bombs with the glitchwelder mod, because it will place it on the creation, which might work better since youre using spudguns to detonate them

    You need a flywheel to act as a capacitor to smooth out the forces when engaging the clutch. That is if momentum functions at all

    17:53: A flywheel would fix that, but would need a lot of mass. We used flywheels on cars for a long time, and they serve to keep the rotations on the engine, even during the cycle changes on the pistons.
    20:32: Maybe a "injection system" for the explosives, where they spawn and then are bought to the chamber to explode, could fix it, but honestly I've known scrap mechanic for enough time to know that it probably would made it even worse.

    wouldnt it make like the engine 2 times liter if you'd used two bomb spawners for each piston and alternated them? this could allow you to have twice the power with just slightly increased weight.

    Bigger cylinders! Maybe 4 stroke to make the timing better cause it has dobule the time to spawn and blow up, and obviously more cylinders, you could use the challenge blocks for the engine since you have the mod, they are light and invincible!

    1. You need a flywheel. A heavy rotating mass that keeps the engine rotating when the pistons aren't applying power.
    2. Try adding more pistons at different angles. The fewer degrees of rotation between power application increases torque. Right now you have power application every 180 degrees. If you can reduce that down to 120 or even 90 degrees, you'll be much better off.
    3. Try a friction clutch. Your current clutch is more of a direct drive gear. You need a clutch that can slip and apply the load more smoothly over time. So try maybe two plates of tier 3 concrete that get slowly pressed together by pistons. It'll probably take a lot of clamping force to accomplish. And you'll need suspension to act as clutch springs. It'll take some tuning to get right.

    Wow, that's super cool even if it doesn't work. Reminds me of the thruster engine I built (way back before we had pistons.) For the clutch problem, I think maybe you need a flywheel on the crankshaft? It might go a little ways toward keeping it turning even under load. Lighter pistons might help as well (maybe just 1 layer of metal 3?) For the misplaced bomb problem.. yeah, that one sucks. Maybe larger cylinders would work, but then that's going to be less efficient because the bombs are going to be off-center from the pistons and this thing needs all the oomph it can get.

    you can use the compression of the cylinder to instant's activate the explosives, assuming it goes fast enough. I made an explosive based cannon where a piston on max speed with 1 distance hits a bomb, detonating it and launching a projectile, so you could use pistons like spark plugs kinda

    Try adding a flywheel, I dont know if it works within the confines of SM but it should help to keep momentum when you engage your "cluch" mechanism.

    its because of the spud guns, spud guns when they are moving dont go offso the explosives are randomly going off from just the movement of the car, so you have to put a piston that pushes itself into the eplosives to activate the explosives, i also just found out that 4 pistons make the explsive explode instantly

    Kan turn off the particle effects to remove the explosion. You can then see it without turning you qualify to minimum. Still very cool. Had an idea to do this but never got round to it so very cool to see it done.

    You could try using the glitch welder to spawn the explosives, as it will spawn them attached to the creation, and you could place multiple explosives in it, making the explosion more powerful

    I suggest not using pistons, but a flap that is pushed around a circle by explosive shockwaves.
    It reduces complexity and energy loss and helps smooth out the power delivery.
    My design uses small explosive spawners mod instead of large explosives, just for the even width.
    It's called Radial Flap Explosive Engine on the workshop.
    If you're here reading this, cool. And if you are still into potato powered engines still, I wanted to present a potato rotary engine on the workshop, and yes, it has 1 con rod; its not a spinner.

    Lately I have been making different layouts of engines using spud guns on the cylinder heads shooting the pistons. I would love to see how you would do one of those style engines. Love the videos! Keep it coming!

    I think you need a counter firing engine like you see in real life where there is no momentary pause in between the cycles of force also having the piston rods connect to the top and bottom of the drive shaft in alternating fashion might help

    Hey Kan! I used the laser cannon from the new legend mod and mechanical parts for the gears, and I ended up with a inline 8 Cylinder engine, it had like a 6 to 1 gear ratio because it has a very minuscule amount of power, but it moves on its own engine power! So I’d say you should mess around with that laser cannon too, it might work out!

    It's not that the bombs are going in the wrong spot, it's that the potatoes have to travel down to the bombs. As such, the potatoes actually move off target since the craft is moving and miss the bombs making them not instantly explode.

    2 things, flywheel will help it, but also the spuds got blown up on your car for one cylinder hence why the timing became off, I dont know if its the bombs not getting put in the right spot but rather has the potato's missing the bombs when moving

    One problem is the spud guns, when you move they fire slightly behind where the explosives are/they don't apply the momentum of the vehicle, another problem is the weight, this is probably one of the main problems as it took two full power thrusters to even get it moving, and then there is the fact that even if you get it working how would you make it functional without the ability to miniaturize it to a useable scale. Overall this seems very improbable, but not impossible.

    i made a piston powered car, it had a differential and double wishbone suspension on all 4 wheels, the front wheels had realistic turning, too.

    On your moving (well kinda) vehicle, you missed that 2 of the Spud guns were missing. One of the "zylinders" only had 1 Sput Gun shooting at it instead of 3.

    An engine 180 degrees opposed will always have this issue. Especially with no timing control and no flywheel. Make the engine heavier or add more cylinders and I think it'll work fine.

    Build a thruster engine with the modpack. I did and after 8 thrusters it went to 2mil RPM! Try it

    Another problem visible when you add load is that the timing is fixed and the engine stops working as soon as the revs don't match the timing. Sensors made is spin up too much without load, but maybe they would work with it.

    This is just a guess but doesn't it stall under motion because the spuds aren't hitting the explosives? This would definitely be a problem during hard acceleration but don't think the momentum of the spud guns carry over to the spuds. This could be fixed by putting the spud guns in front of behind the cylinders; in the direction of travel. I guess it would still stall during turning but at least it can go forwards.

    Maybe a inline engine with a flywheel would help it because it seems the engine struggles with load of any kind so maybe a flywheel can help it with momentum.

    Perhaps rotate the pistons ninety degrees to the back, extend the firing spudguns two or three blocks and try it like that.
    If the explosives are lagging as the vehicle moves, move the firing pistons to the rear and rotate the pistons so they can continue firing.

    I'm woundering if it's the diff you built. I would try to attach the wheels directly to you driveshaft so there is one on ether side of you engine so that the side of your engine will now be your front.

    i think the momentum is moving the explosives. maybe put a block behind the explosive so that the explosives cannot move around while the vehicle is moving.

    i wonder if there's an option other than spuds for triggering the cylinders. after all,
    spud trajectory would be off if there's any movement: making it unreliable at best.
    could a maxed-out piston slam a weight into the explosive & trigger it?
    perhaps spawning another [breakable] item in the same location will cause a collision similar to the version welded to the ground.

    I don't think it has to do with the bomb spawners, I think (and I could be wrong on this) it has to do with the spud guns being misaligned in motion, like as soon as the vehicle starts moving the fired spuds have moved back and are no longer in line with the explosive. So maybe moving the spud guns forward some would fix it.

    Maybe make the clutch less absolute
    It needs to slip at a bit maybe two disks of high friction blocks pressed against with suspension
    Also edit maybe make the cylinders bigger and diagonally placed so the explosive can fall into the low corner and will allways explode in that spot so it can work while moving

    have you ever made spudgun engines before? If not maybe you can use the explosive engine and just replace the bomb spawners with some spudguns and make it lighter so it can move. It wouldn't be as cool as an explosive engine but I'm shure it will be fun

    so uhm i've tried doing it too (but in an inline 4 configuration) and a good solution for detonation instead of the spudguns (cause they might break) is a piston on 1 length and max speed because they get glitchy that activates at the same time as the explosive spawner the back and fourth of the glitchy piston will blow the explosive up instantly and as for the timing, i'm trying an actual camshaft system with sensors instead of the valves and i think i'm pretty darn near making it work just need to find a way to alternate the explosions when two pistons are at the same position to get the rpms higher. i'm planning to add a flywheel too and make a friction clutch, which should make the moving engine a more possible solution the flywheel will get enough momentum to the engine to keep running once you engage the clutch and not just stop and the friction clutch allows some slip if it's necessary

    The "2 cylinder engine but not really" was something actually done in real life. Honda used Oval Pistons as wide as 2 cylinders in a Bike engine soo they could cheat their way past a cylinder limit.

    Neat idea. Did you try to make some sort of ⚙ exchange. Like different sized gears to multiple your torque. Don't know a lot about engineering. But it seems like you could probably multiple the power you do have, by making some sort of makeshift gears that step up or down. Just a thought.

    @Kan Gaming just so you know there are lots of 4 cylinder engines where sets of 2 pistons are at the same point in their stoke in fact the majority of them are like that including v6 and v8 they just combust at different times for instance my ford 801 cylinder firing order is 1243 also for future builds a more realistic clutch to a car would be 2 square plates opposed to one another with something high friction like a cactus on one that will also allow a bit of slip between engine and drive shaft for initial engagement TTFN

    I would try 2 things.
    First try only to mave by the engine itself, but I don't think it will work.
    Second, turn the engine by 90° and try if the spawning ist still such a problem when moving, and again, just the engine, not those thrusters.

    I would say you need a fly wheel or some sort of inertia to carry the engine around

    What about having it as a 3 cylinder with the pistons facing upwards? you could use bearings to set them to being a 3rd apart. you might need to use the explosive to pull up the piston instead of push it down though unless the weight of the other two would raise one to the top.

    Or maybe one of the spuds hits metal so only 2 spuds hit the explosives. So it doesn't go off instantly.

    Gasoline in an engine doesn't explode, in fact when gasoline does detonate, do to excessive compression ratio or too advanced engine timing. Gasoline will combust in a properly designed/tuned/maintained engine, ensuring a drawn out pressure applied to pistons.

    I think the spudguns are the issue. When it moves maybe one of the spudguns hits the metal on the side instead of the bomb too? Maybe put 6 spudguns on each bomb?

    You don't need a clutch just need to rise the back wheels up and wheel you want to drive lower them down

    For your first prototype you showed where one of the tnt don't blow up. Did you try rotating the creation? Isn't there a North South East West thing in scrapmachanic that can effect thing?
