  • The sacraments are important because we are not angels. Human beings, made in the image and likeness of God, are incarnate spirits.
We have this cultural idea that religion involves a flight from the body in order to reach God. Christianity, in fact, presents the exact opposite movement: God takes on a body in order to reach us. The sacraments take up all the stuff of the material world, making the physical the very vehicle through which the spiritual and the Divine reaches us in our spiritual and physical humanity.
Like the hemorrhaging woman in the Gospels, the sacraments are where we encounter, in our bodies, the power flowing out of Christ’s body to heal us, to transform us, and to divinize us. The sacraments manifest here on earth, our eternal destiny to participate in the divine life.
Quoting from Saint Athanasius, the Catechism says, "For the Son of God became man so that we might become God."

Coming from a "Non-demonational" but Southern Baptist affiliated church, I heard an absolute rejection of the concept of Sacrements. All I heard was that I needed to have Faith (rather trust). Two things I find utterly fascinating: #1 as a Catholic, it requires MORE faith than that of most Protestants to live a sacramental life; #2 and though the 7 sacraments of the Church are discussed, Catholics in general rarely if ever discuss the sacrament for the entire world--the Cross. It's interesting to me that Protestants "unknowingly" believe in the sacrament of the cross i.e. the visible sign of an invisible reality...yet fully reject baptism, Eucharist, marriage etc. My wife, who was devoutly raised in the Methodist tradition is now in the once saved always saved tradition. Please pray for us.

Excellent presentation. Thank you for it. I have studied eastern religions, but they seem so empty. They never really are able to say anything about God and His Love. In fact, they reach a point where they conclude that reality is just an illusion and God is "not this or not that." God is indeterminate, not the Source of an overflowing Love. Buddhism has a noble founder and strong ethics but for them all existence is caught in their terrible cycle of birth, deaths and rebirths. Reaching Nirvana is more about escaping this existence then being in the Presence of Our Father in Heaven. The sacraments that Jesus left us are so beautiful and an actual participation in Eternity. They are Real! God bless!

Excellent explanation! On a side note: Am I the only one who just loves how he says "sh-tuff" at 3:01 and 5:45? Ha ha!

2:12 That....sounds like heresy to me. Exactly what the serpent tempted Adam and Eve with.
