I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL. I AM A BROKE BETCH TRYING TO SAVE A DOLLAR, just sharing my experiences. A professional is always the best way if you have the means.

    Business inquiries only: somegirljessbusiness@gmail.com
    TIPS:
    - Don't take as big front sections as I did. I like the chunky look, but I wish it was a bit smaller.
    - Check on your foils once or twice, but try to avoid opening and closing the foils several times. It can smudge the colour at the root.
    - I left the bleach in for about 30 minutes inititally. If you have hair darker than mine, I would leave it in for 40 (and use 30 volume developer instead of 20).
    - If you're confident, do a few more pieces throughout your hair and under layers.
    - Do the underneath pieces first if they are darker. I knew better, but just kinda forgot.
    - The Age Beautiful toner didn't do much. If you need better strength toner, I recommend using just a demi permanent hair colour with 10 volume developer in a light blonde shade.
    - If your hair turns orage/gold after you've done the bleaching, you need to use a hair colour that will actually tone/cover the brassiness. i.e.: if it's bright orange, use a level 5 or 6 demi permanent hair colour (light brown/dark blonde). if it's golden yellow, use a level 7 or 8.
    - Don't get hair colour or toner (when it uses 20 vol developer) on your natural hair/darker colour. It will lift it permanently and make it brassy!
    - I did my toner on damp/wet hair because I don't typically need a lot of deposit. But if your hair is more yellow and needs more coverage, do it on slightly damp or dry hair. Again, don't get it on your natural hair.
    Products used:
Clairol BW2 Extra Strength Powder Bleach (1 oz)
Ion Sensitive Scalp 20 Volume Developer (2 oz)
    Tint Brush/mixing bowl/colour bottle/aluminum foil
Age Beautiful Toner (Beige Blonde) (2 oz)
Age Beautiful 20 Volume Developer (2 oz)
**PS: I didn't find this toner did much. It might have neutralized the brightness of my hair, but I didn't really tone much. Should have used 10 volume developer and on less wet hair. Thankfully my hair was lifted enough that I didn't need a strong toner.

I’m a hairstylist and I completely understand that there are clients who can’t afford to get their hair done, and that’s completely ok. This video was done months ago, but in case you do this again and you have those chunky pieces, you can do a root tap with a demi and fix it:) Just use something like a 7N demi with 10 volume and tap it on DAMP roots and comb it down slightly and let it process for ten minutes. It should fix anything :) Hope this helps!

Ilijana Marcic hi! I am going to touch up my mother in laws highlights and maybe add a few more because she wants more blonde (I am not a professional) she has black hair so I was wondering what volume developer I should use and the best way to get the new highlights to match the rest of her hair color. Also, should I use foils?

    • @mulliganstew72
      @mulliganstew72 4 роки тому

Ilijana Marcic thanks for the tips!! I’m a diy’er too. I hit my roots with a highlift hoping they would brass out & I could tap the toner on top but they did not take with the highlift. I am going to have to try bleach next but have toner on hand 😊

If anyone sees my comment, no matter what don't use the ion demi hair color in the shade 7n, I have naturally dark ASH blonde hair and i put some of the demi over my highlights where i needed more dimension, (no color on the highlights, just bleached) and it dyed my hair extremely RED dark brown. it was super red and DARK. it's been 4 weeks and still in my hair, and it's right on the top of my head where everyone can see. i'm going to try a different brand next time. just letting everyone know don't use 7n by ion.

@@oonastupar9640 what volume developer did you use? Anything over 10 will also lift your hair rather than just deposit color.

    • @oonastupar9640

@hmb 26 Yes i know, I used ten volume developer. I know people use other colors from that line with no problem but the 7n is red brown. after i used it i saw on sally's another person reviewed it w/ the same problem. I wish I had seen the review before I used it!

As someone with previous hairdressing experience (not a hairdresser, but I was an apprentice and confident with foils) you've done a really great job! I totally understand not going to a professional if you can't afford it and youre prepared to accept what happens if you try it yourself! One thing I would recommend is when taking those larger sections, use the end of your brush and weave in and out a few pieces to help break it up. You ended up doing a similar thing with those smaller pieces at the end but it might help make the process a bit shorter with one step. :) Although considering this was your first time I'm sure you'll have it perfected soon already anyways :) I never comment but I love your videos!

Nice job! Professionals make it look easy. It IS easier when you’re not looking in a mirror, but the manual dexterity is definitely a skill they develop. I used to do perms for my husband back in the late 1980s/early ‘90s. Talk about trying my patience! I could never do it for a living. Thank you for sharing your effort.

God bless your honesty. I like how humbly refreshing you are. I am in this situation currently and was scrolling through wanting to find some tutorials and im really glad I saw this video bc it reminded me to wait. I’m older than you so I had to laugh a little because every time I have ever tried to dye or highlight my hair at home it just never goes the way I’d hope for it to. But a few years will go by, and occasion will come up and I’ll insist I need to look good for it and I’ll butcher my looks by trying to fix them 😂😭 I’m not saying you did that to your hair with these highlights bc they honestly weren’t that bad, just a little thick.

I honestly think for a non-professional, you get great results! You had to see me do coloring at home ... it seems I went to the gym, I sweat, I get pain in the arms and very tired ... ah! and I'm much more uncoordinated than you in front of the mirror! Very good! Well explained and learned a lot!

It's not bad at all! Yeah the very frontal pieces are a lil chunky and whatnot but when your roots grow back a bit it'll look a little more natural at the top part, and you can always try to add more near it to break it up even more. Overall, the blonde tone you achieved is reaaaally nice and it did really lighten your whole hair up! lol I'm still platinum getting my roots done even though I can't afford it.. scared to try to grow my natural out but I know I probably should try sometime to get a reverse balayage.

Omgosh. Hahaha. I am literally looking at myself when you put your foils in. From the crumpled 1st foil, to the one eyed stylist. I hate foils but I love what they do but I am super impatient and messy so it's more important for me to not loose interest and confidence than it is for me to perfect the technique. But.. maybe I can practice without product just to get better at it. 😎
I wonder if there is a video that shows how to fold them without crumpling them when it's done as diy.

Thank you for this video!! I also can't afford a professional anymore. I worked in a licensed professional beauty warehouse for 3 years so I know how cheap they get their professional products. For me a $160 markup on about $8 worth of products used on my hair for an hour to two hours of time is rediculous. Thank you!!!

It looks really good for an at home retouch, just one thing to comment on though! Bleach doesn’t stop processing just because you take it out of foils or it dries up, just be careful to not over process and burn your hair off!

Dear - a little bit of a correction: even if your hair is darker you should never use more than 20 vol with bleach. You can use 30 or 40 with “high lift” hair dye like Chi Infra (if you want very light hair) or Paul Mitchell(if just a bit of lightening is wanted). NO FOILS with powder bleach ever. Also it does all come down to different product quality. Bleach I do recommend: Kaaral Sense, Indola (new version), and my fave (no breakage ever): Joico paste bleach. I have never highlighted my hair so no help there :) But I wanna say that heat AND foils spells a lot of trouble for me. (Hugely damaging). My dark hair lifts just fine in 15 min with Joico w 20 volume but I prefer more gentler 10 volume and yeah I rather wait an hour. That’s my own experience with hair breakage- lo and slo is the way to go :) Try it

I did my own highlights and they turned out well the first few times I did it. I did chunky ones because I prefer them like that, and I have to do it anyways because I have curly hair 😂I’ve always used just the right pieces though because they never look chunky even when my hair was straight. Almost 3 weeks ago I went too hair though and ended up lightening my whole head (except my bangs 😬) so it turned out to be a patchy mess with platinum, slight darker blonde, and some of my natural dark pieces. But I used a semi permanent brown dye a day later and I’m using it until I can get my hair fixed. I’m surprised that my hair was so light because the dye covers my hair so well, besides leaving some light sections but it all blends. But for now I’m done diying because I can’t learn when to stop 😂

It didn’t take as much on the roots so I’m going to have to mix up some bleach which I am frightened about but Will just start slow...Too much of being holed up in lockdown due to coronavirus in Seattle Washington. Will be interesting to see what my hair looks like when all is said and done LOL

Btw do you think it would look nice if I did kind of a balayage technique on my grown out roots just to get my roots a bit more blended with the blonde? I have similar hair to u before highlighting

It turned out really nice and even before the toner your hair didn't look yellow? At least not in the bathroom light. Mine always ends up yellow as f**k 😂. So I have to do the toner after. Nice video👍👍👍
