TIPS:
- Don't take as big front sections as I did. I like the chunky look, but I wish it was a bit smaller.
- Check on your foils once or twice, but try to avoid opening and closing the foils several times. It can smudge the colour at the root.
- I left the bleach in for about 30 minutes inititally. If you have hair darker than mine, I would leave it in for 40 (and use 30 volume developer instead of 20).
- If you're confident, do a few more pieces throughout your hair and under layers.
- Do the underneath pieces first if they are darker. I knew better, but just kinda forgot.
- The Age Beautiful toner didn't do much. If you need better strength toner, I recommend using just a demi permanent hair colour with 10 volume developer in a light blonde shade.
- If your hair turns orage/gold after you've done the bleaching, you need to use a hair colour that will actually tone/cover the brassiness. i.e.: if it's bright orange, use a level 5 or 6 demi permanent hair colour (light brown/dark blonde). if it's golden yellow, use a level 7 or 8.
- Don't get hair colour or toner (when it uses 20 vol developer) on your natural hair/darker colour. It will lift it permanently and make it brassy!
- I did my toner on damp/wet hair because I don't typically need a lot of deposit. But if your hair is more yellow and needs more coverage, do it on slightly damp or dry hair. Again, don't get it on your natural hair.
Products used:
Clairol BW2 Extra Strength Powder Bleach (1 oz)
Ion Sensitive Scalp 20 Volume Developer (2 oz)
Tint Brush/mixing bowl/colour bottle/aluminum foil
Age Beautiful Toner (Beige Blonde) (2 oz)
Age Beautiful 20 Volume Developer (2 oz)
**PS: I didn't find this toner did much. It might have neutralized the brightness of my hair, but I didn't really tone much. Should have used 10 volume developer and on less wet hair. Thankfully my hair was lifted enough that I didn't need a strong toner.

I’m a hairstylist and I completely understand that there are clients who can’t afford to get their hair done, and that’s completely ok. This video was done months ago, but in case you do this again and you have those chunky pieces, you can do a root tap with a demi and fix it:) Just use something like a 7N demi with 10 volume and tap it on DAMP roots and comb it down slightly and let it process for ten minutes. It should fix anything :) Hope this helps!
Ilijana Marcic hi! I am going to touch up my mother in laws highlights and maybe add a few more because she wants more blonde (I am not a professional) she has black hair so I was wondering what volume developer I should use and the best way to get the new highlights to match the rest of her hair color. Also, should I use foils?
Ilijana Marcic thanks for the tips!! I’m a diy’er too. I hit my roots with a highlift hoping they would brass out & I could tap the toner on top but they did not take with the highlift. I am going to have to try bleach next but have toner on hand 😊
If anyone sees my comment, no matter what don't use the ion demi hair color in the shade 7n, I have naturally dark ASH blonde hair and i put some of the demi over my highlights where i needed more dimension, (no color on the highlights, just bleached) and it dyed my hair extremely RED dark brown. it was super red and DARK. it's been 4 weeks and still in my hair, and it's right on the top of my head where everyone can see. i'm going to try a different brand next time. just letting everyone know don't use 7n by ion.
@@oonastupar9640 what volume developer did you use? Anything over 10 will also lift your hair rather than just deposit color.
@hmb 26 Yes i know, I used ten volume developer. I know people use other colors from that line with no problem but the 7n is red brown. after i used it i saw on sally's another person reviewed it w/ the same problem. I wish I had seen the review before I used it!
Girl, I’m right there with you with the negative money thing🙌🏻 hang in there, people tell me it gets better 😬 also, it’s good to see a hair video from you again 😊
It looks lovely, always do my own highlights and personally I've always had better results doing my own hair than going to a salon 😮
As someone with previous hairdressing experience (not a hairdresser, but I was an apprentice and confident with foils) you've done a really great job! I totally understand not going to a professional if you can't afford it and youre prepared to accept what happens if you try it yourself! One thing I would recommend is when taking those larger sections, use the end of your brush and weave in and out a few pieces to help break it up. You ended up doing a similar thing with those smaller pieces at the end but it might help make the process a bit shorter with one step. :) Although considering this was your first time I'm sure you'll have it perfected soon already anyways :) I never comment but I love your videos!
Nice job! Professionals make it look easy. It IS easier when you’re not looking in a mirror, but the manual dexterity is definitely a skill they develop. I used to do perms for my husband back in the late 1980s/early ‘90s. Talk about trying my patience! I could never do it for a living. Thank you for sharing your effort.
I think you did amazing!! I’m actually doing it myself later today. I started having it done professionally but money is right right now so I figured this will hold me off till I can afford to go to the salon as well!
Loved your video !!!! 🙂🙂
Your video is the only one I liked from all the other bleaching videos with your shade of hair 💛💛💛 seriously helpful!
God bless your honesty. I like how humbly refreshing you are. I am in this situation currently and was scrolling through wanting to find some tutorials and im really glad I saw this video bc it reminded me to wait. I’m older than you so I had to laugh a little because every time I have ever tried to dye or highlight my hair at home it just never goes the way I’d hope for it to. But a few years will go by, and occasion will come up and I’ll insist I need to look good for it and I’ll butcher my looks by trying to fix them 😂😭 I’m not saying you did that to your hair with these highlights bc they honestly weren’t that bad, just a little thick.
I saw this on your Instagram, I’m so glad this made its way into a video! I damaged my hair too much to bleach anymore, but I still love watching your hair journey. :)
Girl this was crazy!!! I legit pulled out my highlighting cap and hunted down the metal hook and looked up how to do highlights at home blah blahblah and I watched your video and loved it, you saved me lol, whats crazy tho is I thought it was one of your older videos... DID NOT EVEN realize you uploaded it the exact day or even momemt I had decided to do it and look it up LOL sorry so random I know but Im so confused on how that happened haha! But yes thanks so much cos you mentioned a few things that I definitely forgot about
So nice to see a hair video from you again, i learned everything about maintaining my blonde from you! Hang in there about the money thing, it will get better and hopefully you can even start generating a second income from youtube 💕 but as long as you keep this positive attitude im sure good things will come your way love
Looks amazing!! You did such a great job 👍🏻👍🏻 I’ve had horrible experiences at salons, doing it myself is way better. Love your videos
Girl! I feel you with the no money thing! Definitely don’t have the funds to go get a full head of foils done 😂
My hair is really similar to yours so this was super helpful! Thanks 😊😘
I know you've mentioned you work during the week, I was wondering if you would do a work week outfit video! I would love to see some outfit ideas as I've recently gotten a new job in a business casual environment!
Looks great ! I do the same when I'm broke but need to refresh my hair . I Just do my research and go for it . 💕
Isolation vibes! I’m about to give this a go 😂
I honestly think for a non-professional, you get great results! You had to see me do coloring at home ... it seems I went to the gym, I sweat, I get pain in the arms and very tired ... ah! and I'm much more uncoordinated than you in front of the mirror! Very good! Well explained and learned a lot!
(Bjs) Kisses

I’ve missed your hair videos!!!! Yayyyy!!!
I actually love the results it looks really good. All the best 👏👏👏👏
Looks great! I like the dark contrast of your roots too.
It’s awesome! So real and it turned out great! Thanks for doing the video
YES THANK YOU
Omg you did a GREAT job! Love your videos. ♥️
your voice is so soothing
Nice. Big chunky front pieces are in. I remember when I had my hair lady and I wanted something like that 8 years ago she refused but did baby low lights as I was already platinum.
I think it looks great! By the way, I had such anxiety watching you do your color with that adorable black and white striped shirt on! I kept thinking, “No don’t ruin it!!” 😂
K SK me too! 😁
I love love your hair vid , and I think it turned out amazing ♥️
Looks great i want to do mine but thinner highlights need to know the products to use! Great job!
It's not bad at all! Yeah the very frontal pieces are a lil chunky and whatnot but when your roots grow back a bit it'll look a little more natural at the top part, and you can always try to add more near it to break it up even more. Overall, the blonde tone you achieved is reaaaally nice and it did really lighten your whole hair up! lol I'm still platinum getting my roots done even though I can't afford it.. scared to try to grow my natural out but I know I probably should try sometime to get a reverse balayage.
I’m a professional & I love It. Well done you ❤️
While I would never have the nerve to do it, I really admire both your courage and your ability. I pay a lot of money in a salon, and my hair doesn’t look as good as yours!
Wow good job, it looks great on you I’ve seen professionals do worse and botch dye jobs, yours actually looks great!
well i think it looks very good, like a professional. love your channel
I love it! I love your hair videos!
Omgosh. Hahaha. I am literally looking at myself when you put your foils in. From the crumpled 1st foil, to the one eyed stylist. I hate foils but I love what they do but I am super impatient and messy so it's more important for me to not loose interest and confidence than it is for me to perfect the technique. But.. maybe I can practice without product just to get better at it. 😎
I wonder if there is a video that shows how to fold them without crumpling them when it's done as diy.
Thank you for this video!! I also can't afford a professional anymore. I worked in a licensed professional beauty warehouse for 3 years so I know how cheap they get their professional products. For me a $160 markup on about $8 worth of products used on my hair for an hour to two hours of time is rediculous. Thank you!!!
This looks bomb! Good job, dude!
You did an awesome job! Looks great!
I just used my cap yesterday... I seriously can't afford to go to a salon. I wish I would have seen this sooner 😭 I love the chunky in the front look
Looks awesome! Any tips for fixing roots that were accidentally lifted by toner? I used 10 volume to tone and thought it wouldn't lift, but it did and I find some of my root area too warm now :(
Girl a few months ago it cost me 175.00 to have my hair cut and bobbed and highlighted and i cant affors that. I need to knwk what to purchase to do my highlights at home tahtsall i need is highlights. Please let me know and i knwk she used toner the firat time. Will i need it or is that the 20 volume?
Literally 100 times better than a hairdresser did mine hence why i am watching this, will attempt to fix it at home :D
Your hair looks beautiful,,,,the highlights and tone are perfect on you, please keep posting, your hair tutorials are the best.... very informative and so very affordable,I also watch ellbangs but most products you have to be license to purchase them, this video was great I hope you continue this kind of content and your hair looks pretty healthy can you post an updated healthy hair routine because it seems your hair is getting longer and looks healthy to thank you:-)
it looks so beautiful 👌🏼 great job 😉
Hey I have to say it came out much better than I expected. I think you should look into doing hair on the side for some $$ ;)
Been waiting for this vid!!!
Dont worry w ppl said n dont explain ur self so much u dont need to, do w u like n w makes u feel good...u did great! Looks really good❣❣
It looks really good for an at home retouch, just one thing to comment on though! Bleach doesn’t stop processing just because you take it out of foils or it dries up, just be careful to not over process and burn your hair off!
what toner would you recommend to get a golden , butterscotch type blond ( level 14 in hair extensions color ) im trying to match that hair color . okay thanks . i know alot about getting platinum and ash color but have a hard time finding any videos on golden hues.
These came out so cute!
Dear - a little bit of a correction: even if your hair is darker you should never use more than 20 vol with bleach. You can use 30 or 40 with “high lift” hair dye like Chi Infra (if you want very light hair) or Paul Mitchell(if just a bit of lightening is wanted). NO FOILS with powder bleach ever. Also it does all come down to different product quality. Bleach I do recommend: Kaaral Sense, Indola (new version), and my fave (no breakage ever): Joico paste bleach. I have never highlighted my hair so no help there :) But I wanna say that heat AND foils spells a lot of trouble for me. (Hugely damaging). My dark hair lifts just fine in 15 min with Joico w 20 volume but I prefer more gentler 10 volume and yeah I rather wait an hour. That’s my own experience with hair breakage- lo and slo is the way to go :) Try it
Love it. It looks fairly simple to do I hope mine turns out like yours!
I actually learned so much thank you!!!!
Oh damn which toner would you recommend for orange/golden hair I bleached my hair and toned it and the results were orangy gold- I’m trying to go beige blonde or light I can’t bleach my hair again because my hair is in a really bad condition :/
these are the nicest chunky highlights ive ever seen lol and i hate chunky highlights. but the fact that you kept them frontal and the rest so delicate and with that color of blonde it looks awesome. no need for a profechonal lol
Agreed!
I lost brain cells looking at how you spelled “professional”
gnf I love the chunky highlights. I scattered some throughout the back of my hair like you did also & It really helped blend everything together!
I think it looks amazing!!
Would love to know what products you use to get your beautiful blonde colour! Mine goes so brassy / orange at home 😩
It looks stunning!!!
I love it! And I am totally going to do it now
You look like a young Cate Blanchett 😍
nominalnobody crazy beautiful cheekbones.. I haven’t seen mine since quarantine😛
This is my kind of tutorial ❣️
Good job!!! I’ve paid professionals that haven’t done half as well as you did.
Hi there, can you tell me what number you use for the base color and the toner
I think your highlight and base color match mine , I would try to do my hair color at home for now on ,
I wasn't going to subscribe until you said, "alright, alright, alright". Subbed lol.
I'm a hairdresser and I think you did a very very good job
Is that 20 Volume the toner they use? Is that what it is?
you're amazing!!! and so beautiful! thank you for this video !
Your eyebrows are perfection 👌
I did my own highlights and they turned out well the first few times I did it. I did chunky ones because I prefer them like that, and I have to do it anyways because I have curly hair 😂I’ve always used just the right pieces though because they never look chunky even when my hair was straight. Almost 3 weeks ago I went too hair though and ended up lightening my whole head (except my bangs 😬) so it turned out to be a patchy mess with platinum, slight darker blonde, and some of my natural dark pieces. But I used a semi permanent brown dye a day later and I’m using it until I can get my hair fixed. I’m surprised that my hair was so light because the dye covers my hair so well, besides leaving some light sections but it all blends. But for now I’m done diying because I can’t learn when to stop 😂
Will be following the instructions in this video now in these times :)
Hey there! I love your hair videos. I was just wondering what your hair type is? I ask because it reminds me of my own. I have fine, straight hair but a lot of it.
Can I do it fast and just with out bleach I had my hair out too much money
Witch toner did u use
How long did you leave it on?
Omg it looks so amazing
What kind of toner? I couldnt understand ehat you said. 😆
Pretty. What was the color of the toner. You should try shades eq 9p, for a blend shadow root. Ebay :-) :-)
I’m a cosmetologist and I thought you did great!
Stop apologizing, Jess. You are being followed. Your Courage is fabulous.
A salon could not have done a better job. Great work! I colored my hair along with you!! I used a high lift by Kuene and got beautiful Icy colored highlights. It didn’t take as much on the roots so I’m going to have to mix up some bleach which I am frightened about but Will just start slow...Too much of being holed up in lockdown due to coronavirus in Seattle Washington. Will be interesting to see what my hair looks like when all is said and done LOL
Actually looks pretty good for a diy :)
Thanks for this video! I just ordered a few things to do my own hair at home in quarantine! HAHA cross your fingers with me, I'll let you know how it goes! xoxo
what bleach did she use?
I don't really do bleach, but I love your hair videos!
Girl it looks great I do the same cause I have 3 boys and I don’t have the money to spend on my hair lol
thanks for this you have the most lovely blonde hair with your fair complexion -- I hate brassy hair I'm always fighting it.
It looks beautiful and there is so much dimension! I love it!
It looks great!
Great video. Are those your natural root colour?
You did a great job!!
I actually like your darker roots 🤣. Love your videos. Thank you!❤️
I agree roots are a pretty tone for her
It looks really good actually
You are semi pro... 99% if women can’t do their own hair let alone color highlights... great job
Btw do you think it would look nice if I did kind of a balayage technique on my grown out roots just to get my roots a bit more blended with the blonde? I have similar hair to u before highlighting
Hala Ubooy yeah that sounds good!
You did a great job!
It's lovely did it really good x
It turned out really nice and even before the toner your hair didn't look yellow? At least not in the bathroom light. Mine always ends up yellow as f**k 😂. So I have to do the toner after. Nice video👍👍👍
You did good, i like the Way i looks😀
looks great!! Who cares what anyone else says!? positive vibes only!
You should try doing some baby lights
