  • Ethan Hawke goes into full-on evil mode in his performance as The Grabber in the new Horror film The Black Phone, directed by Sinister & Doctor Strange's Scott Derrickson. Check out this behind-the-scenes look at how the cast & crew brought this horrifying character to life.
From The Black Phone (2022): Finney Shaw is a shy but clever 13-year-old boy who's being held in a soundproof basement by a sadistic, masked killer. When a disconnected phone on the wall starts to ring, he soon discovers that he can hear the voices of the murderer's previous victims -- and they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn't happen to Finney.

The scariest part is when he’s sitting in the kitchen with his belt in his hand & with his shirt off waiting for him to come up the steps. I really wanna know why the Grabber is the way he is. It bothers me so bad!

I have a theory that he has some kind of personality thing. He says "that wasn't me, that was someone else." After Finn asks if it was him who killed the others.

True. I also wonder if he was mentally abused or something as a kid because he said he once had to stay down in that room, and he said the phone hasn’t worked since he was a kid, so clearly he lived there as a kid or something. He is so creepy in this movie, I just can’t even.

He enjoys playing mind games with his victims. He wants them to believe everything's gonna be ok. And he leaves the door open, so they think "this is my chance" that way he tries to justify torturing them for being a "naughty boy". Remember when he told Finny "I was gonna let you go" when he lied about his name. It's all about power for these type of people.

I felt so freaking uncomfortable when they revealed the Grabber waiting for Finney. The focus lasted way too long and I was just silently begging that it will switch back to Finney because it felt so uncomfortable. Lol
But Ethan has a nice body, though.

Ethan was a perfect choice to portray The Grabber.
And while watching, i got the feeling his character had some kind of personality disorder given the different ways the two halves of the mask got combined or left out, with the amount of different expressions it could make.

serial killer movies are the scariest because there are actually serial killers all around us, ( pro tip) the inside of the old toilets have a metal rod about 10 inches connected to the float, brass, aluminum or steel, it can easily be sharpened into a spike with a little bit of grinding against concrete wall

  • @saracarbone02

the film itself is not scary, it's the fact that it happens everyday that puts you in this kind of position where you start looking at your sorroundings even more in a manic way, like you never know what's gonna happen or if it's gonna happen to you, cause it's not impossible, you start thinking about how you'd escape, what would you try to do in that situation, if doing the same things Finney did would help, 'cause even though it's fiction there's always a small chance and you gotta be ready somehow.
Btw this movie is definitely a 10/10, already saw it three times this week

@@commiesnzombies I'm only 19, i was born in 2002, but i always thought that it would have been cool to grow up during the 70s and 80s, those years have always interested me, I guess being a teenager back then was fun, despite the myriad of killers roaming around, I'll never understand why only in that period there were a lot of maniacs targeting only young boys, it must have been scary, having to stay alert and look around for possible dangers, my parents tell me there were a lot of kidnappings and that it was considered dangerous for children to go out and play in the streets, even if they were in front of their houses, they also tell me that despite the fact that even now the crime is skyrocketing, I must consider myself lucky not to have been born in those years, in fact, in my years of studies and research I was able to see that the most macabre kidnappings in history, which took place from the 69 to the 80s, without ever having an end, they were unstoppable

I enjoy Ethan Hawke's roles in horror films. He was great in Training Day--I just never haven't been bored with films featuring Ethan. The sound score in the beginning was awesome. It reminded me of films like Seven. The acting from each character was great. I loved the character build up. The story was good and liked the way the camera shot certain scenes. I give it a 8/10.

In a recent interview with Ethan Hawke, he stated that he hated this character because he was so evil (I'm paraphrasing) but I remember when Javier Bardem was interviewed for his role in "No Country for Old Men", he said that no matter how much you disliked a character, you have to find something you like about that character and make sure that comes through in the performance (again, paraphrasing) or you can't portray the character fully. I believe Ethan Hawke did a great job with this character, even if he did hate the role and what his character stood for. Which makes it even harder to convey a believable character!

Nice to hear that Mason Thames, Maddy McGraw, Miguel, and of course the one & only Ethan Hawke coming back. I also hope that Scott Derrickson cast Rachel McAdams, who previously played Christine Palmer from Dr. Strange (which Derrickson also directed), as Mrs. Susannah Blake, Finney & Gwen’s probably late mother, who had dreams, like her daughter Gwen.
Hope to hear Kids In America by Kim Wilde and Call Me by Blonde in the sequel if it takes place in the early 80s. But I DO hope to hear more 70s songs though. Also, if it does takes place in the early 80s, hope they use the 80s Universal & Blumhouse logos this time since they used the original, modern Universal logo from the first film.
I also think that the rock band Paramore should write and perform an original song that sounded like the late 70s & early 80s for the movie.
I wonder what will happen in the sequel? Will Gwen & Finn’s father die suddenly from an alcohol 🍺 poisoning after tearfully
apologized to his kids for his treatment? If the Grabber comes back to haunt Finn, would his sister Gwen sacrifice herself to save him? Finn will be completely devastated, but she’ll probably call him as a ghost with their mother, Susannah.
Also, will Finn and his crush Donna become official soon?
I also hope Scott Derrickson make a Black Phone prequel called The Grabber soon, with Ethan Hawke coming back as The Grabber. Hope it’ll be about how a man named Albert Shaw became a killer called The Grabber, and why he kidnaps and kills kids.
If Derrickson is planning on adding new actors on either a sequel or a prequel,
Would he probably add Raegan Revord from Young Sheldon and Ariana Greenblatt from Barbie and Stuck In The Middle?

I'm about to watch it, I just wanted to get a little insight. I hate that he's playing a bad guy, I like him. We are the same age so I grew up watching him. But I have to see it.

Maybe it’s scarier if the killer has no motive. Either way, Hell’s got a special place for guys like the Grabber

For the life of me, I can't figure out why the killers in books and movies wear white when they shed blood? Claudia from "Interview With the Vampire" book wore a white dress with matching slippers when she killed Lestat. Esther in "Orphan" wore a white pinafore when she killed Sister Abigail and the Grabber wears a white bowling shirt when he kills his brother. It would be nice if the killers wore dark colors instead of light ones that show off blood!
