    I went from a good chipper to the yips after getting a lesson to "use the bounce". I was a hinge and hold chipper before it was called that (I copied Tom Watson). The bounce technique worked fine for me on the practice green but under pressure I lean the shaft. This is a killer move and is the reason a number of pros like Jon Rahm won't use this method. Now I've struggled to go back to H&H because I tend to partially unhinge early (again under pressure but not on the practice green). I have been experimenting with the "Jason Day method". I like this method in the video better. I wasn't standing that close to the ball and this really helps getting the heel of the ground. I also like moving the ball position. JD moves his hand starting position but usually leaves the ball in the center of the feet. Great video!

    The music is distracting FYI. But, I agree about using the leading edge, bounce has its uses but we get a variety of lies and turf conditions so even something like a higher bounce 56 and a lower bounce 60 can give you more flexibility.

    Berry Henson plays a lot on the Asian Tour where he will be playing off Bermuda grass and not bent grass. ,I suspect that has influenced his chipping a lot and this technique looks more suited to Bermuda than bent grass. Bermuda grass really slows the club down which makes making predictable contact hitting behind the ball almost impossible so I can see why he chips this way, using the bounce and hitting behind the ball works better on bent grass than Bermuda. I would be very very interested on his thoughts on this. I have played golf in Thailand and chip the way he demonstrates when there as I found the bent grass technique of using the bounce and hitting before the ball just did not work well out there.

    • @BerryHensonGolf
      @BerryHensonGolf 4 місяці тому +1

      You are right on John. But this technique does work great on any grass cause it creates a level of consitancey but playing off bounce on thinner grass is much easier then Bermuda.

    Brenden - the main thing for you to check out is how well Berry keeps his arm structure. His right elbow doesnt break down on the backswing. He lets his arms hang and keeps that structure and radius of the swing. Thats how he controls his low point so well. Watch from 14.01 . See his right elbow. Then see yours.

      The distance from the club head to his shoulder stays pretty much the same. When u allow the right elbow to bend it leaves you at the mercy of the club head being a slightly differnt distance from ur shoulder on each stroke. That is the true magic sauce. 🎩

    • @garyinderry
      @garyinderry 4 місяці тому

      This is universally and always true about vital low point control! Both leading edge and use of bounce techniques work well if one has good and precise control of the club's low point. However, one should not use bounce technique on hard pan and tight lies!

    Using the leading edge with ball back contradicts what other top instructors are saying now. As others have commented, depends on conditions; turf hardness/softness, type of grass, thickness and depth of grass. I hit most chips with ball slightly ahead of center of stance and shaft perpendicular to ground. This works most of the time for me.

      I watched Tiger, Hovland and others stick the leading edge in that Bermuda. I guess they were using the wrong AOA 🙄
      Tiger is a big proponent, of ball back weight forward, leading edge on the ball.

      @@lawrencecirillo3233 most mistakes when using leading edge comes with setup. Either ball position/sternum relation to ball/shaft lean/or weight distribution is off. If I was to pin point one it would be weight on left side. Most people don’t get enough weight on left side and keep it there thru the backswing.

    I respect anyone who plays well, around par, but I disagree. I play my best chips when I hinge and put the face right on the ball. I think it is like Dan Grieves release 1. Of course it is only good for nothing in front of you it comes out low and rolls out. I never had success with the pendulum, putting swing. But, if this works for someone great. Each of us is different.

      I agree everyone has there own DNA but I have seen so many am’s get handsy with lower body movement and this creates lots of inconsistency.

    Im sorry, but no offense to Berry. He is 100% wrong that ball back takes all the risk out of it. That particular shot brings in a ton of risk. Ball forward gives you a greater margin for error. You can skip into the ball and get a good result. I so disagree with Berry on this. I can't even watch the whole video.

      It depends on a lot of factors. I got $100 bucks on him in a chip off :). Dave Pelz is the guy that made what he’s doing famous. He’s also a short game stud. Different strokes for different folks. Alan

      I could not agree with you in stronger terms. Advising someone to use the leading edge is a massive step backwards in short game technique.

      @ReSourceEnergetics I would take that bet all day. You can make it $1k and I'm still in. I'm not trying to be cocky, but in my mind my confidence level is through the roof and I feel like I have the best hands in the game. That's my confidence level. Whether it's true it or not doesn't matter. It's my belief in me and my confidence. I would have no issues taking him or anyone on in a short game contest. I used to laugh at the people on big break struggling with the flop wall. For me it's a relatively easy shot. Again I just believe in myself and I am wicked confident about it.

    Worst chipping tips I have ever come across. First he wants you to grind the bounce off of $150-$200 wedge. Then he totally neglects the fact of all the different types of lyes you get.
    Your way better off learning to use the bounce so you can traverse all those types of lies.

    • @BerryHensonGolf

      The V grind doesn’t need any extra work. Judging lies and hitting shots accordingly is an art but on most clean lies I use leading edge.
