+David Thomas In Nigel's time the newspapers were usually a main source of Boxing coverage/news unlike more recent times sadly when the sport is often neglected.
It's only neglected now because pay per view killed 3 quarters of the fans, i used to be very clued up on boxing, as a lot of us probably were back then, now, i have no idea whats going on, pay per view killed boxing.
Every little bit of utterly unimportant gossip trivia is instantly on modern social media. Only if it's big enough, does it get beyond social media and to the old-fashioned papers. That was his point, smarty-pants (not)

I met Nigel in the Hacienda hotel and casino in Las Vegas way back 1st December 1989 when he fought Jose Quinones. My mate and I had Union Jack tee shirts with "Nigel Benn is a Geordie" on the back of it...after the fight Nigel got his manager Ambrose Mendy to invite all us Brits (most were expats living in L.A.) into his dressing room. Nigel loved mine and my mates tee shifts and offered a swap of tee shirts. He said his two best mate he served with in the British Army were Geordies. We got a shit load of photos...he is a top fella.

Jones is 46 and finished as a top flight fighter for 10 years. Benn said himself after one of his fights he 'didn't mind being number two to Roy Jones'. I'd batter Muhammad Ali, does that me and a heavyweight great? Jones should be saved from himself, rather than deluding himself any further and risking permanent brain damage. Benn was an animal and a great warrior but for a counter puncher like Jones, rated THE fighter of the 90's by Ring magazine, he would either stop Benn late or get a comfy decision. Sugar Boy Malinga finished Benn, Jones knocked him out. Styles make fights and all but Jones at his best was untouchable and won a heavyweight title, something no middleweight had done in almost 100 years. Benn had a few defeats under his belt even at his peak, so why would Jones not beat him!? Defies belief...
Possibly the most exciting British fighter ever. I love everything about Nigel Benn. legend.

always my favourite middleweight from the early 90s watching him as a kid Big Ben chimes has he walk to the ring with cool looking short dreadlocks the dark destroyer was a very fast and powerful puncher always remember the Gerald McClellan fight what a brutal battle that was and the Eubank fights Golden era of middleweights

Nigel Benn, with all due respect you were told to stay away from Gerald Mcclelland as he had the same status as ggg. Same with Calzaghe was told to stay away from Jeff Lacey. You both proved the doubters and their invincibilities wrong
Different kettle of fish altogether, fella. Totally different. Benn had at least proved himself as a world-class operator and was a 2-weight world champion, he'd shown he belonged there. Eubank Jr is a massive talent, loads of potential but if he cops a bad beating from Golovkin...that could ruin him. I mean it could smash his confidence to pieces. Do we want that to happen? I don't want to see Jr go backward in his career and I'd imagine Sr doesn't either. It feels like Jr is being rushed into this fight with Golovkin, maybe 2 or 3 fights too early. McClellan was a beast but at least Benn was ready and proven. Same with Calzaghe, he was already proven

Rapid Stanley Agreed, I admire the guts of Jr, if it really is him who wants the fight and is not being pushed into it by his old man. There are loads of big names that have dodged this fight with Golovkin in the last few years, so credit to Jr if it does happen. I agree he will give it everything however long it lasts and if he has the same chin as his dad, it could last awhile. Murray lasted 11 but you could see he was in agony, it was his heart that carried him that far

But he had that reputation. Benn never scared anyone before he got in the ring. It was his relentlessness that won him his fights. Lacey and McClelland had fighters quaking before the bell rang. GGG nobody will know anything about him and his padded record until he steps up in weight or fights elite fighters. He doesn't have one elite fighter on his resume

Klitschko is a boring, stiff fighter, hope he get's beat, boxing would be better for it, can't stand watching him fights, few fights were even on eurosport, nobody is really even that interested in him, hence why he was on there fighting a nobody.

I'll admit, I was a Eubank guy, and although Benn disappointed me many times in the past I always respected him., I used to think he was an act (hell even Chris, himself, admitted he was an act) but as I've followed Nigel through retirement, it's clear he's a real motherfu*cker.
0:34 - 0:36 tells you all you need to know about that. Ha ha Understand, I'm American, but I've always (since age 5) followed British boxing. I'm over here trying to tell people about the Dark Destroyer. He only gets respect here in the boxing circles, but the average guy who 'likes boxing' here doesn't even know about him. Had he been in the states he would have been wildly popular as well. He's what we call a ''baller'. I personally think he was one of the hardest punchers of all-time..I put him over Jackson...that is for sure. No disrespect to Julian.
