I feel like they should charge less on vol 1s so it helps new manga writers

Oh man, I didn’t even think about something like that. I Love that idea, that would be really helpful and probably help them have a few series catch people attention

Covid caused a big decrease in paper quality but increase in price across many different manga and comic publishers. Finished off the last DC comic trade I needed, and now I'm only committed to finishing One Piece through the box sets. If the quality of the books changes favorably in the future I can probably stomach the price difference, but as it stands I can't justify spending so much when I can read the majority of this stuff online. The price increase may seem "small" to some, but when you have to buy 10, 20, 30 volumes etc it all adds up.

I don’t comment often on UA-cam videos but just wanted to leave one here to let you know I’m a big fan of your content. Especially these types that you drop sometimes where you’re just kinda sitting down and talking about whatever’s on your mind. Keep up the good work! One Piece is my favorite manga series and I’m 100% with you on being committed! 104 volumes in and at this point the price could double and I’m still all in 😅🤣

I really appreciate that, yeah I’m with you and that’s why I wanted to use it as an example because it might not be healthy but at this point they would have to charge ALOT for One Piece for me not to complete that series 😂

I personally mostly collect Viz titles so it's definitely hurting the pockets a little but im hoping eventually prices go down or at least we get more frequent sales from retailers, I also hate that Rightstuf had to shut down, it's really not the same collecting manga at a good price like that

I feel like everything you shared was really spot on, especially about series potentially having lower series because “trying out new series just for fun” has a whole new financial meaning. I feel with the price of manga going up I have to be much stricter and have to learn to “drop” series early if I don’t feel I’m absolutely loving it. It’s just too expensive to buy a series I don’t love deeply, which hurts to say because I know some series take more time to hook then others, but it feels like a new reality 😭 I deeply love the hobby too and don’t plan to quit anytime soon, but I have had to cut back and be more selective on what I pick up. Great video!!

Thank you! Yeah I think that is the worst part of the price going up, is the days of I’ll pick this up for a few volumes see if it’s good are going away…physically at least, I think digital is good for that, but then does that affect sales and series not getting to finish their story…like you said it’s definitely a new reality

Great video, and this is the feeling that I still have even though I know that it’s coming. I just hope more sites come that lower the manga prices for people that cannot quite afford the new price increases.

      @DanielPeppers  11 місяців тому +1

Thank you! Yeah I think maybe a positive that will come out of this is sites/secondhand stores can see a market need, which is a little bit exciting for me because I enjoy going and looking for deals and I’ve gotten way to use to just clicking a button 😂

i do feel it in my wallet, a light novel 20 bucks. some go even as high as 30 and then manga they range from 11 to 16 so i buy quiet a lot but i want to also commit to a few series, i have a subscribe feature but then i also want to catch up before i subscribe all those volumes add up to a 100 really fast. i hate the increase in price, i would be able to live with it if i knew 1/3 of the increase would go to the author but i doubt that's the case

  • @spiritcircle9599

I think for people who are in to the hobby it will remain more or less the same, it's just that we may choose to be more selective due to the price increases. I mean, I've never really purchased at retail prices for the most part, but even online prices creep up to a point I dont want to pay for certain releases.

One of the reasons I stopped reading American comics was that the companies priced me out. $3 is fine, $5 comics is not ok. As long as Viz doesn’t raise there price again any time soon I’ll stick with them. Viz’s pricing is now more in line with Kodansha and Seven Seas.

I think instead of impulse purchasing people will likely use second hand and or digital more then if they like it they'll collect it. But that's rational, and hobbies aren't really rational

Great insights as always! I was thinking about making a similar video after receiving Neighborhood Story the other day. I was surprised with the MSRP of 25.00 when it was announced this past summer and then when it arrived I was even more surprised it was not in hardcover but more similar to a Viz signature but with french flaps. Congratulations on 3k!!! Keep up the great work.

Thanks man, yeah wild I just noticed it’s on 3k subs….crazy, but yeah I’ve definitely been noticing that kind of stuff with books that would of been $15 a year ago and now $25 and stuff like and honestly I’ve just been reading more stuff digitally and being more selective with what I’m picking up because of prices, but you should definitely do a video about would love to hear your thoughts!

This is why I read 99% of my manga series online and only selectively collect my favs as it can get expensive and take up a lot of space . I`ve found reading manga online is way more convenient, inexpensive and feels like less of a commitment :D Borrowing from a library is also a great option !

This is such a poignant topic. I'm looking at my list of ongoing but coming to a close series I've picked up and am breathing a sigh of RELIEF that they're coming to an end! Now I'm looking at new titles and immediately going "yo-ho-ho" to see if I can read what's available before picking up a new physical. And I now prefer trawling through used bookstores before paying MSRP.

What's crazy is that manga in Japan has historically been a cheap hobby. I don't know why the American market is so different, but in Japan, you can score whole manga series under $100 pretty easily. Many content creators I follow who live there and can read Japanese have compared the prices, and it's staggering.

It probably has to do with inflation because if price to make product and shipping it increases it has to go to consumers

I already thought 10 dollars was too overpriced considering Japanese prices are 3-5 dollars but 12 dollars? I don't know about anyone else but sadly I know I won't be buying as much manga as I used to.

I think after using youtube over decade plus. I think you are my favorite content creator. I have been buying manga and light novels recently but digitally on bookwalker. I would love to collect it but it is simply too expensive for me. Also, Western books are too expensive. I wanted to buy a warhammer book, but only the collection was available for 21 dollars. 😊
