Typical HD dealership doesn't think to install new plugs and plug wires change fuel filter and lines do a 3 hole oil service before giving you a 50 year old bike. Service departments suck.
Typical Harley Davidson service department sucks.
I was under the impression that they bought them from an individual.
They were bought from a mechanic at the dealer. It the store itself
Most authorized dealerships won’t work on bikes that old. Even if the old owner works there, he may not be able to work on the bike or even order parts for a bike that old.
Not saying it’s right, just facts.
I’m about 45 minutes east of Mad River H-D,if I had paid attention I would’ve come out to meet you, that bike is sick Bro,it’s amazing a H-D tech can’t put plugs in for ya
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
As someone that started out on shovelheads you have to carry tools and you have to know how to work on your bike.90% percent of the people riding Harleys today wouldn't be riding them if there only option was a shovelhead. Now days everyone and there mother ride Harleys and back in the day it wasn't like that.
Truth....
Good point. When I stared riding Pans and Shovels were current.
You are right and I am one of them.
Thumbs up to you guys that did. And do.
Be careful, ride safe.
Life sucks when u ain't got the warranty to call dealership😅
Couldn't diagnose a fouled plug on his own...pretty weak.
I sold my 1976 hd super glide for 5000 $ . The man who bought it has given her a great home. Good for both of us.
Very nice!
@@cargotrailereric6738 I paid $4273.00 for a brand new 1980 Super Glide in 1980.
New Harley’s are great, but nothing brings a smile to the face like an old Harley. That shovelhead is gorgeous, nicest bike you have I think..old skool is the best skool.
AMEN🫶🏽🙏🏽✝️
Agreed
New Harleys are GARBAGE, and so is the company. F Woken Zites.
I have a 1977 Shovelhead. You actually gave me an an exhaust bolt to fix it once at the K River campground. You even asked to buy it. lol. Can’t beat the feeling of an old bike. I’ll ride with you anytime. I live in Tuskahoma myself.
Right on!
Welcome to my world. Took me 25 years or so to go right back to what I had back in the day but best decision I made. Nothing like riding a day and knowing you rode all day!!!!! Then do it again and again.
The thing I like about Harley’s is that you can work on them, well until the most recent with the electronics.
I love my new stuff, but the vintage bike make you feel so connected to the bike and the road, there is nothing like it! Good On ya Adam!
The 7 P's:
"Proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance". Just bustin' yer chops, it's an adventure! Go for it!
The 7 P’s! 🤣
Ill always regret selling my 1st Harley. 81' FLH. Yeah there were push starts, and oil leaks and rusty iron heads but man it was the coolest bike! Y'all enjoy your selves. You're living the life!
The joys of owning a Shovelhead 😅 Now put a kickstarter on it 😊
You can run those at 45 MPH all day!!!! I own a 74. Still in love with her. Plugs and points.
I owned a 1975 Shovel head I miss it but I don't miss working on it. In the old days when a bike would brake down we would drink a beer and fix the bike lot of run times fixing my old Sportster in the drak lol
Just a tip….run a 60w racing oil in shovel head. It will keep it cooled down better. Amsoil racing 60w is a good choice. And just for those who don’t know yes you can run a racing oil for old V8 engines in Harley’s and they will run cooler and quieter than they do with v twin motorcycle oil. They lubricate better and don’t have to worry about a clutch slipping. But don’t use it in the primary !
I use 20w-50 racing oil in my twin cams. It makes a noticeable difference.
Great tip!
I aways use 70 wate oil it's getting hard to find but it's worth it
@@ronwhite1642 well it’s really not the weight that makes the difference. Motorcycle or “ v twin” oil is actually a compromise. Most people don’t understand that. It’s designed to ALLOW a certain amount of friction to occur so the clutch won’t slip on motorcycle that shares engine oil with the clutch in one unit. That’s why you can’t use auto oil because it lubes it TO WELL and the clutch will slip. But on a big twin Harley the engine doesn’t share oil with a clutch so you can run a good automotive oil in them that lubes the engine at full potential. I’ve done it for years. You notice it runs cooler and the ticking on top end you normally hear goes away. It had additives that motorcycle oils have removed
I suggest racing oil though because it contains high zinc and is designed for old v8 engines which works perfect in a harley engine. Less friction less heat less noise
We use to run straight 50 😅
I have a 1979 FXS Low Rider and know exactly what you're talking about. NOTHING like new bikes. Real bikes, real riders.
So that dealer doesn't seem to care about how those bikes will run however they sure did make them look good on the outside. You know some people like to ride their bikes without stoping multiple times each day to work on them
They were bought off a mechanic that works there. Not the dealership
@@Longrider-fp1ez So that guy calls himself a mechanic does he?
Even worse @@Longrider-fp1ez
@@ernesthood2647 my thoughts as well
You’re right, absolutely loved this video! You still looked happy even with all the bike issues. Can’t wait for the next video! Safe travels!!😊🏍️❤️
Troubleheads! LOL
I got my first Harley in 1976. The world moved at a slower pace back then. The 4 speed transmission kept us at 60 to 70 MPH but sticking to the back roads cruising at 55 to 60 was the sweat spot.
Back in those days you had to lean how to work on your bike. If the battery isn't getting a charge, first check the pluck from the rectifier to the stator to make sure it is plugged in good. They can work their way out. If it is plugged in solid then pull the lug and check voltage from the stator. If no voltage then bad stator and not an easy on the road fix. If it is putting out 50 or so volts (AC) then you have a bad rectifier. Easy fix if you can find a replacement.
The thing about Shovels is, they are very basic and easy to learn how to repair.
One of the nice things about having a slow bike is you get to see things that you normally would go wizzing past. Smell the roses as it were. You also will be more inclined to make stops that you normally wouldn't. And as you found, sticking to the back road two lanes you discover "real" America.
I know you've ridden all over the country but I hope you do more rides on this bike and see some things you have not experienced before.
There's nothing like the feeling riding a Harley Davidson that shakes and nothing like a grown man feeling like a kid again ,
Happy for you .
Honestly, I love the non interstate riding. It may take me longer to get there, but the ride is x100 better to me.
I agree
Love both the bikes. I had an 81 Shovel lowrider 1340-4speed and loved it. Wished I wouldn't have sold it. Just watching you 2 ride these beautiful bikes took me back to my 2 trips to Sturgis when I was in the Navy. 1 from San Diego,California and the other from Bremerton,Washington and that was in the early to mid 90's. I now only have my 98 Fatboy EVO 1340 but am looking at getting another shovel just to go get my coffee with and putt around on. Nothing like the older bikes. They have so much soul and character to them. I envy you both in doing this trip. Safe travels and keep the rubber on the road
It was great seeing you again and the Route 62 Motor Resort is looking good!
When you guys fired up the bikes, I was 100% all aboard with this plan. Your TSS (Technician Support System) is doing a great job so far, bro! Ride safe!
Great stuff as always Adam. Like the old timers use to say, on the old bikes, you earn your ride. Zero creature comforts.
All Harleys leaked oil and so did the British bikes. It was the Japanese bikes that didn't leak oil and they set the bar for better quality and reliability ..
Back in 1978-79 I had a 1976 Yamaha RD-400-C 400 CC's and it total embarrassed HD's and ate them for lunch ..It ran souper smooth too .
Souper?
@@stephenbattles4573 Really smooth , the engine was mounted in rubber .
Reminds me of my '57 chop, rode it everywhere. Pick up some seafoam and add 1oz to a gallon and use non ethanol gas. I ride my '98 Heritage without the windshield and use a bandana on my face, it helps. Be safe out there and welcome to the world of AMF.
Just a did a similar road trip this past weekend, only in my '84 Dodge d150. 1,342 miles round trip from Manitoba down to the Black Hills. Was pretty cool taking that old truck on the Iron Mtn Rd and the Needles Highway. Equally as cool was my 13 yr old daughter coming along for her first trip to the USA. She loved it, especially how nice the roads are compared to Canada. lol
So cool that you got to do that with your daughter!
That’s so cool
I used to ride a 1200 1974 shovelhead for 14 years. Always carried some tools! Needed it now and then. Never bought a HD after that (40 years ago). Other than that, these bikes are easy to repair. Ps. only Champion plugs or original HD plugs worked! Also be aware of that little oil filter on the right side. It is for the hydraulic lifters. It can cause some nasty noises if not clean.
I appreciate the advice 👊🏼
I went into a Harley dealership when I was a kid. 1978 or 79. First First thing I noticed was the cookie sheets under all the bikes to catch the leaking oil. AMF almost killed Harley. So glad Willie G and the crew finally got it back.
If AMF hadn’t bought it, HD would’ve gone the way of Indian. 🏍️💨🏁
That must have been back before you were a cruiser dog ? 😂
@@kurtfoulke5130 I was a Cruiser Puppy. 🤣
Hey, Adam. I did something similar. I found my dream bike a 95 heritage EVO. the best riding I've ever done.
Long live the Evo
Oil leaking in some old shovels could be because the oil breather gear filter could be plugged up and causes the seals on the motor to leak oil.
Those are both fantastic bikes! Just do the services, and they run a long long time. These are super easy bikes to work on, get yourself a factory manual. And don't beleive the hype about overheating unless you live in Texas Arizona😂😂😂 everything overheats there!😂😂😂 in my experience shovels are awesome if you treat em right. I've seen em run 2- 300k with no real issues properly maintained.
Man oh Man You just bought a bike I dream about! I Love the 77 Shovelhead and it looks great and sounds GREAT. Enjoy the ride Adam. Sometimes problems are part of the ride.
When you said US62 I was wondering if I would see my hometown and there you were cruising right down Main Street! If you ate at Watts (you were sitting in their parking lot) and had some Velvet ice cream, then you have experienced the best Utica has to offer.
An old Easyriders magazine recommended Bosch Platinum plugs for Panheads and I always ran those, but I don't know if that translates into Shovelhead or not. Always carry spares. And better to run a little rich on a roadtrip and replace fouled plugs than run too lean for a long time and burn things up.
Your friend is getting an education on why they started chopping them and extending the front forks in the first place-they sit too low stock and drag things in the twisties. Your bike didn't have that problem
Looks like a great time. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Thanks for tuning in 👊🏼 😎
Next time you want to ride an old Harley across country contact Shadetree Surgeon with you. He's used to fixing old bikes on the side of the road. All he needs is gum and a Philips screwdriver. 😁
That’d be an epic adventure!
Man I envy the road trip! Catching up on your content, travel got in the way for a couple two or three weeks. I absolutely love the naked front end road trip, so old school, enjoy that breeze and the elements in my face. Reminds me of long road trips on a Softail Deuce, enduring every kind of weather imaginable.
I love the shovel, easy maintenance and bullet proof if ya do just a few upgrades. Mine had issues destroying 3rd gear, but that was because of the S&S 96" monster the previous owner installed, I wanted to install a baker 5 speed to correct this problem but ended up trading for a race truck. Worst decision I ever made😂😂😂😂 but we live and learn.
old school back roads, that's the good times.
I live in Columbus, Ohio and agree that we have many great roads specially in southern Ohio. I have never taken route 62 so within the next week, I’m gonna take my wife down that route stop at the diner and go to Maysville. Cheers.
Awesome! Safe travels 👊🏼
Plugs automatically replaced, and a spare pair for the road on shovels. But for 5K I wouldn't bitch--I'm sure you had a set with you anyway. She's a beauty and a runner. At 72 I will never replace the feel of a shovelhead in my mind (had several new from 1999)--now I finally have someone who matters agree with me. Would love to find a realistic shovel to this day. Peace
If needed of course!
Long time rider, your last 2 videos have taught me about hwy 62.Hope to drive my old chevy truck, don't ride anymore.Thought I rode all the roads but not 62 in Ohio & Pennsylvania,Jeff in louisville ky,thanks😊
Right on! Ride 62 right on down till you hit the Route 62 Motor Resort!
What a great adventure. Love the shovelheads. Even with the troubles you guy's have had, I know you having a ball! You are the man Adam!
My first HD was a '98 Dyna Wide Glide, black. To me, your old Shovelhead could have been what they modeled the Wide Glide from. Stretched, rear side shocks, mini ape bars, chromed battery box. Not the springer stuff of course, but at a glance they seem similar. Enjoyed your tour.
I just rode a 2000 mile trip on my new to me 2016 Indian chieftain right off the floor at the local Indian dealership. Zero problems like not one thing went wrong, other than the damn rain in Idaho and Oregon 😂😂😂
I'm glad you are enjoying yourselves. It can be hard to stay positive when bikes are breaking down. Unfortunately break downs are inevitable with the older bikes. Improvise, Adapt and Overcome. We will be in the Eureka Springs area this weekend. If you make it back in time we would love to catch up with you.
The battery charger is a good idea. You really can't fix the charging system on the road. You might want to buy a second battery to swap them out if one dies along the way.
Good idea
Should have had a real shop look it over before you took off, those morons at the dealership couldn’t start my Panhead on a bet!
Harleys are on life support and close to death. Owned 2 and I will never buy another one, ever!!! Much better bikes out there and 75% lower cost. I like wrenching on bikes but not on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere.
Awesome video. Did a Shade Tree Surgeon move . Buy a bike somewhere and go on a adventure
🤣 why not?! It just adds to the adventure!
You should gift him your Handel bars for that flh
Your BACK!!!! Old school!!
Love it Pard
I have a shovel and pan head you will never see me on a new harley. Good to see you like these old bikes
That bike is sick! The springer makes the whole look
I think so, too!
Make sure you have a tow truck following close behind you guys!
You got spoiled riding new bikes. Those are some real Harleys that take skill to ride
And MECHANICAL KNOWLEDGE 🤔😉
Man, brings back great memories of my first Harley at 18 years old. A used, 1975 FX (kick start only) Shovelhead. Loved that bike and miss it to this day. You get to know those Shovels real well as you need to check them over before each ride. You'll learn. One thing, man when you're riding and everything is just working perfect with it, stand by to stand by, somethings going to break. Enjoy those Shovels. Wish I had my old 75 to have a place beside my 02 FLH and 24 Road Glide.
I'm 61 now, and my first big twin was 78 FLH still have it to this day.
Though it's unrecognizable as a flh, many mods and changes throughout the years.
I also have a 1982 FLT (no fairing or tour pack) lowered and 16" apes.
My other two bikes are a 91 springer softtail and a 92 electraglide ultra classic.
For the most part, they are easy to work on and have been very reliable as long as you respect and take care of them.
I'm originally from Missouri and still consider it my home.
For what its worth, thats a 74ci motor.they heat up and they should b running a little rich to it cool alittle bit,Also in the morning.let it warm up idiling.you could blow a head gasket if you dont.
That mechanic sold you his problem. Sorry that you got catfished Adam. A mechanic would know that the rear cylinder was shot. Your friend got a problem bike too. Very nice scenery on Rt.62. Glad that y'all made it back home. Old AMF bikes usually have problems unfortunately.
It's called a bar hopper for a reason!
Looks like you guys figured out what riding a Harley is all about. It is NOT about speed or power. It's about the look, sound, and feel, and just taking your time and cruising down the road, enjoying the ride. Those plugs show it is running really rich, which eventually fouled the plugs. On a carbureted bike, with everything electrical turned off, the ignition will work for a long time with a fully charged battery. A modern EFI POS wouldn't make it 20 miles before draining the battery.
Brother you guys put the “adventure” in a cross country ride on oldish Harleys. 👊😎🙏
Wow, makes me miss my shovelhead! Good luck!
Good morning Gentleman! Shovelheads , hands down , best sounding bikes ! I'm investing in a 2024 Honda Trail 125 as a back up to my 2013 Ultra Anniversary! I grew up with these little bikes ! BULLET Pruff machines ! Retirement is on the horizon. I will be doing more gravel roads and dirt ! Enjoy your adventure and be safe ! God speed!
Ha! you pushing Mike's bike to get it started ,i had flashbacks to poor old Dave pushing Josh's bike to get it running .lol
I’d rather ride a 5k dollar Harley any day over a 40k dollar Harley. All the computer screens and all that crap does nothing for me. I ride a 2016 Heritage Softail now and that’s about as fancy as I’m going to get. Paid 11k for it with 9500 miles on it. It’s like riding a classic Harley with a few upgrades to make it more reliable. ABS and EFI about all it’s got that modernizes it. Twin Cam 103HO more than enough power
Really enjoy the longer vids dude awsome as per!!
Thanks for the input!
My husband always did ALL his own work & never had a new bike.
Try breaking down in the good ol days, with no cell phones... always carried a full tool roll, side of the road repairs were expected.....
Just wrapped up a 4700 mi trip on my used Vulcan 1700 Flawless.
Nice!
Pretty darn cool vid !!
Thanks!
I agree
Pull the bushings Try to fond washers that will fit in the top triple tree. If you can , go solid using shorter bolts. Washers arent necessary. Just shorten bolts if need be. with shorter bolts.
Shit , if i was on my 47 knuckle or 61 pan , id alreqdy been to your final destination.
What is your gearing ? 300 t on the rear and 14 on the mainshaft ? I can jog at 45 . Just picken on you both . I enjoyed your video . Id enjoy it more if one of you wore a Jane Russle slingshot .
I got a new proctologist. My first visit was thismorning. Im in the examination room waiting when he walked in . Youll need to disrobe he said . Where shall i put my clothes ? On the coat rack by the door with mine .
Thanks for tuning in 👊🏼
Old school fun!?! Try an older Russian Ural. The sidecar trunk is for parts n tools. The most fun I’ve ever had on a motorcycle. When people ask me,”What broke on it?” I reply, “The question is what hasn’t broken yet!?!” Old school is for tinkerers. Cheers!
Nice this is great just discovered your channel I'm in
If u own a pan ,or shovel head and don't have at least 4 spare spark plugs avaliable in your bag and a thin file to clean and gap the old ones about every 500 miles lol and carry a spre coil too
You just discovered my next road trip for me. And yes, Ohio is a great motorcycle trip state, and if you like the twisties, check out southeast Ohio.
A hole lot different than your RG ..but nothing but taking a road trip on an ol' shovelhead. Ride on brother 🏍💨👊
I have a 62 Triumph! Love it & can't let it go!🫶🏽🙏🏽✝️
Cool vid Adam and cool bikes, nothing like a good little adventure. All the best from NZ.
I always keep a extra set of plugs on my bike at all times for this very reason
Good idea
Holy Balls!! You guys are a Hoot ! “Rev it to keep it running” 🤣🤣🤣
👊🏽🇺🇸
Yes Sir
Old School ways
See you guys are grinning ear to ear though
Stay Hard Adam 🤘
I had and 1981 FXS for 34 years. I bout it in 1988. It was a money pit all 33 years. I had the engine rebuilt at one point. I traded it for a new lawn tractor a couple of years ago. Best move I ever did.
Looks like they run trains down main street in Maysville. I was looking at a Map of Kalamazoo in 1910 they had Trollies and Electric RR's in the Cities back then. Fire Stone and General Motors convinced most cities to scrap electric trains for Diesel buses..
Adam it only happens when everybody sees us popular people that want them but I'm glad you found one have a great weekend ok later 💪🏼 ❤🇺🇲 badass bikes both of them color's 👌
I need to get off the freeways more. Rt 62 in Ohio is a neat road. I ride it quite often from central ohio going north. By the way. Love that springer
Wow I can’t believe seeing what came out of that gas tank and the old girl still ran! I now will be going to plan a trip down 62 starting at Columbus is a good starting point from what I can tell I bet once the trees turn it will be an epic adventure ride safe guys!
My friend,...change the pully ratio on the transmission you won't be sorry.😄
That’s why we ride with black shirts. Hide the oil stains.
Hey she's got twice the power now! Better bring 10 of those plugs along.
your fuel filter is in the tank.Remove fuel line and screw it out ..that simple
That simple ? What about the fuel ?
you obviously have to catch fuel in something.Yes simple
Those are sweet old school. I’m thinking your buddies ride might be just a tad bit more comfortable 👍👍😎👍Adam you need eye protection at night especially without a windshield. You don’t want to lose an eye from a rock or bug. We’ve all took hard impact into our eye protection.😳😳😎😎
This is one of the reason why HD is moving part of their production out of the US
This got me so upset I sat here and eat a half dam jar mayonnaise
🤢
Always enjoyed my '67 FLH " troublehead ". Zen and the art of motorcycling, it's not the destination but the ride. And that was one cool ride!!!
That was awesome! Im in Columbus and I travel 62 often, it is a historic road with some cool little towns. Cool video thanks!
