The Bulbous bow of a ship is a strange-looking structure fitted at the forward of the ship.
Now many of us will have this though - Why do ships have a Bulbous bow?
It comes in a range of shapes and sizes tailoring to the needs of the parent vessel. However, a broad classification refers to whether a bulb has been ‘faired’ with respect to the hull or there exists a steep curvature with respect to the stem line, which is the case with an ‘added’ bulb.
With the different Ship Bulbous Bow Designs in existence today, it seems that most of the shapes possible and a combination of two or more of them have been tried out. However, newer designs have emerged and older lesser-used designs have often been tried out with certain changes after extensive analysis leading to new bulbous bow construction.
While there are benefits with modified ship bulbous bows providing fuel savings, there are other advantages too. Watch this video which explains why bulbous bow is fitted on the ship and how do they work?

Very simply understood thank you sir. 🚢
Glad it helped
The ship is just excited to be in the water.
A squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast and bulbous.
Got me?
🙃
What a beautiful illustration of an educational video. Nicely done! Question though- how does the ship’s counter balance and center of gravity works with the different shapes of Bows? Thanks for your outstanding knowledge!
Thank you Roh for your comment
very informative video
Glad you liked it. Please do share and support 👍🏻
@@marineinsight sure man
Nice 👍
👏
I have a bulbous head.!
Will you please explain different types of bow and their uses in particular ships?? Thanks in advance
@Amit: We do have a brilliant article on this topic - www.marineinsight.com/naval-architecture/types-of-bow-designs-used-for-ships/
. . . . and why not all ships get them.
A pretty interesting video. I'm just a cockpit driver so I never knew about these things. Hope we will be friends.
Sure, why not 👍🏻
What is difference between bulbous bow of tankers, bulk carriers and container ship?
Why is Bulbous bow not fully immersed? Like why is it just below the waterline?
I think new building large ships dont have bulbous bow like this because pressure is more this place and you should provide more power. you imagine that you have to push heavy box what would you do? you use your arm or you use your shoulder? also nowadays new large dry bulk carriers and oil tankers have cylindrical bow. So whole bow between water level to hawse pipe entirely looks like bulbous bow.
bulbous bow only works at 1 speed.
Excellent explanation , I really enjoyed it.
Just one thing - the noisy "subscribe" popup (like just after 3:36) are very annoying and I would highly advise removing them from your videos. If a channel is good (like yours is) then people who like it will subscribe. Theres no need for constant irritating in-video popups, it can have the opposite effect! It annoys viewers who then WILL NOT subscribe.
Constant nagging never has a positive effect. Your content is very good and I feel these nags spoil it, you've reminded us to sub at the start of the vid - thats enough :-)
What is shape of bow?
Can we have two Bulbous Bows for better movement ?
No.
Bulbous bow which material? Forging or casting? Which grade of materials?
The same type of material the hull of the ship is made of, steel.
@@marineinsight steel is common name. Normally oil and gas industry using the vessel and columns ASTM SA516 . I am asking grade of steel materials.
Why bulbous bow is not provided in cruise ships?
Now, almost all cruise ship has a bulbous bow
why small ship or boat dont have boulbous bow ?
The area of hull compared to bigger ship interacting with water is very small hence the hull resistance is not significant in small boat
@@marineinsight thank sir...from mauritius
Do you, by chance, want me to subscribe? I couldn't tell.
I guess.....Yes
Can't do his voice.
